MidYear Ratings

A list of the midyear ratings is posted on the Dallas League Blog. It is not posted officially anywhere yet. I looked through the list and will list out those who I noticed were bumped to 4.5 and 5.0

Remember, these are midyear ratings. For Houstonians they're fairly meaningless, other than as a guide to where you may end up or how much "strike" jeopardy you may be in. Usually these do not include the Houston city playoffs, but my hunch is that this year they do include them, as well as HTA results. (Peter Strasser, for instance, is listed as a 4.5 despite no USTA league play, and some people who had good playoff results are now bumped up. But I'm just guessin'....)

4.0 to 4.5:
Peter Ackermann, John Biers, Ian Bird, Kevin Burke, Stephen Coyle, Mohan Jacob, Andy Kahan, Dan Le, Tom Le, Ricardo Martinez, Reef Merhi, Alex Montes, Bill Morris, Duc Nguyen, Hung Nguyen, Jonathan Hao Nguyen, George Orchard, Eddie Perdomo, Jerry Pham, Robert Pritula, Jason Rawls, Justin Smith, Dan Solis, Chris Towle, Chris Trevino, Kook Youn

4.5 to 5.0
Gary Armstrong, Craig Bobo, John Burrmann, Omon Dibua, Billy Heim, Tim Hurlbert, John Kudrick, Jonathan Magid, Miguel Morales, Ben Whitsett

I may have missed a bunch. I looked at it quickly.

  1. very interesting and questionable bump down goes to Stephen Creel in Austin. After going undefeated at 5.0 last year he gets bumpdown to 4.5. Guess Mike Davis is already recruiting for next year.

  2. Jason, as I'm sure you know (but others should be made aware of), the end of the year ratings are highly dependent on results at Nationals and Sectionals. Even if Steve Creel doesn't play any more, his rating could easily go back to 5.0 based on others' results.

  3. I understans the rules. Is there a Fall League in Austin, because if there is he can easily play drop a match or two, or go three sets a few matches, and wham he stays at 4.5 and Austin just landed a great player for next year. I guess the Mike Davis comment was not very nice. ;)

  4. What kind of results did Miguel Morales have to get bumped up?

    Rich Ryu was bumped down.

  7. I had read that you cannot appeal ratings anymore. Can anyone confirm that?

  8. I am not sure how it accounts for ESR's nut the new National Rule is that Benchmark players will not be allowed to appeal their rating if they bumped up.
Basically anyone bumped at Mid-Year and the bump stays in place will not be able to appeal backdown.

  9. Looks like the 2006 San Antonio 4.5 team got exactly what they wanted. Vasquez and Cambon are back down to 4.5. I didn't even check the rest of their guys.

  10. They won't be at 4.5 for long. The TTA is well aware of their tanking and will move them back up accordingly.

  11. noticed Reid Strand tanked even more matches to try and get down to 4.5, what a joke some players are and how bad they want to win matches. Thanksfully TTA is keeping an eye on some of this jokers.

  12. Team Vazquez is pretty sad in their attmept to sandbag. they make Branch and Benzon look like saints with their blatant manipulation of the ratings.

  13. You can appeal - you just can't do it online anymore.

  14. I would have to say that Creel did not tank, he lost three matches against very good players. The 5.0 team that won the Austin league has some guys who are very, very tough.

  15. The team Vazquez guys are beyond ridiculous. Some of the results of Cambon, for example are way outside the realm of possibility. John Patch is a nice guy, but him destroying Cambon is impossible. Cambon is a quality player. Cambon/Vasquez losing to Black/Johnson is another one.

  16. Everyone just needs to send Tosha an email asking her to look into the tanking going on in San Antonio. She already knows about it but the additional emails will help.

tsmith@texas.us.com or give her a call at 512-443-1334.

  17. Anthony:
I am not insinuating Creel tanked, but him being bumped down will make some 4.5 team very happy down in the Capital City. Hopefully you have already made your recruiting phone call.

  18. thank you for finally calling out San Antonio. They are my prediction to win 4.5 in Dallas. How do you beat 5.0s at all lines? They will win easily and throw a match or two just to play games with the rest of us.

  19. Miguel Morales?!?!?

  20. Torres from SA is an all around price. He manipulates the system better than anyone in league play, yet someone at the USTA keeps allowing it to happen. Sandbagging does not say much for the ones who do it, but it does keep their captains happy. I have seen a few guys sandbag, but they probably are more borderline NTRP rated guys. Cambon does not belong in 4.5 and he knows.

  21. Hacker is right. Every year the ratings at the end of the year are totally different from the middle of the year ones.

What are these ratings used for anyways?

    ReplyDelete
  22. These ratings are used to shape the behavior/performance of people on the cusp of getting moved up

Here is my thought process: "Oh shizzle, I am going to get moved up if I keep winning. Maybe I should sign up for a few singles events and play left handed and lose to some asshat 0,0 so that I have some substance to argue with Tosha in Dec."

Actually these are used for fall combo events is all I really know of.

  23. I believe it specifically says on the Texas USTA website that that 2007 end of year ratings are to be used for Fall Combo events Unless I understood it wrong

    ReplyDelete
  24. These ratings are used for Tri Level and for some cities where they actually have a Fall league that rolls into the following year for USTA. HTA piloted this program in the men's league but it did not do well. But, a lot of cities use results from the Fall to determine teams to advance for the following year. Mid year is no longer used for Combo.

Also, Mid Year holds in about 25% of the cases at best. Mainly because it only reflects how you did locally. The true test is how the team who represented your city does in Sectionals, and then how the team who advanced from Sectionals does at Nationals.

  25. thats what you get for playing to good... now you are banned from 4.0 league and got no where to play .. is that right ? not so good

  26. Donn was confused about what team everyone was talking about, But Sienna will have a 4.5 team next year. It wont be a crush or mob but I think it will be fun to watch.

  27. Actually guys, I have been in Mason Texas for the Dr Pepper Open this past weekend from thursday on so I missed the mid season ratings. I can only guess that Creels tele has been ringing off the hook. I put my call in to him today. We will see? However, he is not the best player bumped down from 5.0 that I have called today. I can tell you all that Rainwater from Abilene is going to be tough to beat in Dallas. He beat Chad and Fred on the way to the finals in Mason. You can believe me when I say chad was trying to win his first Mason title, you can count on Rainwater hurting some people up there. It is nice to be remembered by the Houston blog though.:) We will see you all in Dallas.
