Wow

What a clutch performance by the Rice 5.0 team last night. As noted in previous comments, former UT-Pan Am number one Jorge Cuesta was placed in the singles lineup last night and took out 49 year old slicer/dicer Ward Jannuzzi in straight sets. That result was not surprising. Rice sweeping the doubles WAS surprising. Interestingly enough, I just noticed that Cuesta had double bageled one of Jannuzzi's fellow Met teaching pros back when he was in college

Former 5.5 player Craig Hiddleston was supposed to have an easy time of it in 5.0 this year but has been a disappointment. A recent marriage and a lack of court time have contributed to his subpar performance. Amit Garg and Atsushi Fukunaga (who clearly CAN hang in 5.0, as most of us already knew) took out Hiddleston and Leland Putterman in two tiebreakers.

Line two doubles featured three 4.5 players as Henry Li and Ryan Kudva took out David Toney and Danny Weingeist two and five. Henry hasn't gotten much court time in 4.5 this year, but still came up big in a match Rice HAD to have.

So, Rice got the 3-0 result they so desperately needed last night. If there are no protests, the Met will need a 3-0 win in their makeup with Lost Forest in order to tie Rice in lines won. Unless my calculations are incorrect, it appears they would have to lose no sets and less than nine games total in order to come out on top on the court.

In other news, it appears that the Hangovers somehow managed to get David Bvunzabawaya into two matches. I haven't heard any details on that, but it does seem odd.

  1. That is why the hangovers never reported their scores. They waited until they had david b. then inserted him into already played matches as either a default or substituting his name over someone else who did actually play.

  2. Just remember who is on the Hangovers....why would you expect anything less!!!!!!

  3. Kingwood Crush will still take Houston 4.5 in my opinion. With Gary Armstrong and the Odion and Omion Dibua as well as Hurlbert,Paschal,Pekhar,Santiago,Wright and newly added Hai Vu they will be tough. They have already beaten the Hangovers twice and the last time was a Drumming.

  4. Crazy things happen at the playoffs. Some will choke and some will step up. Don't count anyone out just yet...

  5. Hangovers had not started their full cheating before when they played Kingwood.

  6. To the first poster - do you have proof that David B. was "inserted" into a match already played or his name was substituted? If yes, then please share. I am sure USTA would be interested.

...Otherwise, you are blowing sh1t out of your mouth.

Don't try and stir things up more than it already is.

  7. Is that really legal? HTA and USTA should look into it.

  8. It seems that the Hangovers get a lot of attention for a team that is in 2nd place. What about the other teams from other divisions in 1st place. It's obvious that they can't be that good if they can't win their division.

  9. The hangovers have the most sandbaggers so they have to be considered a favorite. Kingwood has their fair share of ringers as well it will come down to these two teams. The hangovers know to just finish in second place. Its obvious some of their players have a tanked a fwe meaningless regular season matches. That wont happen at the playoffs.

  10. Damm, don't we all wish we could be as smart as the guy above?

Why did Green/Burkhart think about it first? Just lose enough to get the #2 slot, then come out and play against the #1 teams from the other flights because they are a lot easier. I bet Kilshaw is kicking himself right now for not thinking about it first.

Maybe we can ask Kilshaw if he would prefer to switch position?

  11. How dare the Hangovers add a comptuter rated 4.5 player!! Wait a sec, nothing worng with that.

How dare they write him into a makeup match!! Wait a sec, nothing worng with that.

How dare they purposely lose matches!! Wait a sec, the main losses of the entire season cost them 1st place and a better seed in playoffs. And you dont have any proof, otherwise it would have been brought before the HTA, probably from an "Anonymous" email address.

How dare Kingwood take 2 complete team wins by having the other captains shell out 8 defaults in the process, while the captains of these teams ignored that their players that actually wanted to play the defaulted matches. Wait a sec, no that IS wrong.

Wow... I am glad we are so focused on what the Hangovers are doing we dont see what else is truly going on. Or maybe that is the point of all this complaining.

  12. It appears that Freeman's Hurricanes has been downgraded. Looks like they might be tropical storm or depression. In addition I heard that Freeman, might lose some of his players, but they are not going to tell him until right before citywide. The number I heard is 4 players.

  13. To clear my rumor it is the double players who are leaving the Hurricanes.

  14. Which doubles players? I think the Hurricanes will be favorites to win even if they lose four very good players. Depth can really come in handy.

To further clear things up, will these players be missing just city playoffs, or will they be ineligible at sectionals as well?

  15. I couldnt believe that a team could be given EIGHT defaults in two matches, so I looked on Tennislink myself and sure enough... and the most interesting one is where David McCarthy, one game from winning a set, defaulted. Interesting since the tie between the two teams could come down to sets lost... Smells like a rat! We didnt have anything like this in our flight!

  16. Apparently Cuesta and Guerro will be disqualified.

  17. I do not want to put any names out on the blog, in case these players decide not to leave the Hurricanes. All I have been told is if these players decide to leave the Hurricanes, it will hurt their depth and make the team a lot weaker.

  18. The second part of your question, I did not see until I posted my comment. The players are still eligible. Just are planning to go somewhere else to play.

  19. The only people leaving the Hurricanes for city/sectionals are people that are playing on multiple leagues that opted to play on the other team.

There is not going to be a mass exodus of talent from the Hurricanes.

When this whole thing started and many of us were signed up both teams it was decided who would play where if we had to choose at a certain point if both teams were fortunate enough to advance.

We now have that situation. That is all.

  20. What about the rumors that Chancellors are going to use a bunch of ringers to take out Freeman's team on Thursday night at City?

You know, the old racist argument of "they all look the same, who can tell the difference?" Take a look at the roster if you want to know what I mean.

Kind of like the team from San Jose at Nationals last year in Hawaii.

I think HTA should make you show up with a valid TDL and they should take a digital pic of the players at the net (like the pro leagues do) so that if/when someone complains, there is documentation of the people who were on the court.

I know this sounds "over the top" for recreational adult tennis, but it has now come to this.

  21. I think that would be a great rule for HTA to implement at City Wide. If that rule was in place then no one could complain after the match. Especially if you have guys on your team that just play league matches and do not play tournaments.

  22. Atsushi is still a 4.5 player. Most top 4.5 players can hang in the 5.0. Your totally biased opinions about players you have never actually seen or seen play a match mess up what could be a great blog.
