Last week's action

As you know, there were very few matches played to completion on Thursday. However, the 5.0 division did have one interesting matchup which probably cleared things up a bit.

The Met hosted division leading Rice and had a chance to make a statement in its first "real" 5.0 match of the season. Rice had been riding Arun Nanjappa and stealing a doubles line as its formula for success. However, that all came to an end on Thursday. Former University of Oklahoma player John Sullivan took out Nanjappa in straight sets. Without a Nanjappa win, Rice has little to no chance of winning a match by sweeping the doubles.

The most interesting matchup of the match occurred at line 3 doubles. Li/Regent have been at the top of the 4.5 heap for many years, winning the Coke several times and having great league success. They faced two 4.5 rated players in Toney and Jannuzzi. Supposedly, Jannuzzi had been deemed not good enough to play for Phong and Henry's 4.5 team, so he was extra motivated for this one. Phong and Henry went down to a humiliating 3 and 1 defeat, quite possibly their worst league loss in many years, dropping their record to 0-2 in 5.0 league play.

The 5.0 league is expanded this year, but the expansion is mainly at the lower end of the talent pool. In fact, only 20 of the 48 players in the 5.0 league are even rated 5.0. It's quite common to see 4.5 doubles matchups in 5.0 matches this year.

  1. The Met is definitely the sleeper in the 5.0's. With Weingeist and Putterman you get 2 solid doubles players who play percentages no hacking going on with this duo. With Sullivan playing singles they have a 1-2 punch. As far as Ward Januzzi and David Toney are concerned they just go out there and get the job done. They have a tough matchup this week with Allen Teagues team which will make things very interesting in a up for grabs 5.0 division.

  2. Ward is a gay. But he is good player. Just not good enough to be on the team. Phong and Henry were off.

  3. There were other reasons why Ward was not invited back to the team, not because he is not good enough. And Ward is NOT gay (or for you anonymous) NOT a gay.

  4. We will not allow his kind on our team.

  5. Putterman is NOT a hack?

The guy was born with machetes in both hands!

  6. Obviously Putterman is not a Hack he and Weingeist are the top team in 5.0 league. When Princeton was top 5 in the Nation he was in the Top of the lineup. Weingeist and Putterman are also club champs at the Houston Racquet Club which is loaded with All Star Players.

  7. If we got the top 4.5 Guys in the Houston League Singles and Doubles versus the Top 5.0 guys Singles and Doubles who would win ? I know at sectionals there is a noticeable difference but what about in Local League Levels?

  8. Start naming some singles matchups and pairings between the 4.5 and 5.0 levels...

  9. That's actually kind of a fun question. Who would be on a 4.5 "all star" team? Using the format of 2 singles and 3 doubles, who would make the lineup if every roster was in play? Is it still safe to assume Nanjappa would make the 5.0 squad even with his loss last week? Are Putterman/Weingeist REALLY the cream of the 5.0 crop? How would they fare against Tim Green and another all star doubles partner? I'd love to see somebody else's opinion of a top 8 in 4.5 and/or 5.0 leagues.

  11. In 4.5 the top singles players have to be Jonathan Magid, Atashi Futkanaga, Gary Armstrong,Ryan Cooper, Jody Deluca, and Tim Green. In doubles I would have to say Timothy Hurlbert, John Burmman, Tim Green, Rob Pekar,Adam Paschal, Odion Dibua, Craig Bobo,Timothy Sebesta,Dan Courson ,Glenn Wright,Phong Regent, Henry Li, Peter Rothe,Herb Morton, John Day, Adam Kent the list could go on but I think these guys are definitely High Caliber Players. In the 5.0's I would have to say the Top Singles Players are John Sullivan, Arun Nanjappa,Nico Heidari,Robert Bickmore,Fredric St Louis, and Laurence Sombito. In doubles Daniel Weingeist, Leland Putterman,Brian Montez,Craig Hiddleston,Bryan Taylor,Phillipe Arnold and David Toney.

In My Opinion 5.0's would win the singles and 4.5 guys could squeak out 1 line out of 3 in the Doubles. 5.0 Players are just more match tough. Lots of Open Caliber players that play Fearless in 5.0's. In 4.5 the guys still fear the 3rd set Tiebreakers.

  12. De Luca must have wrote that. How is he in there? Green knows he is not good in singles so he puts himself in doubles. You left out big Indian guy on Rice.
