I understand there may have been some controversy out at Taylor High School last night. This is third-hand information, so the information may be faulty.
I believe that the Shwings singles player was serving at 4-5 in the second, down a set (?) when the lights went out. The overall match score was 2-2 at the time. Now, there has been a lot of discussion on here that the home team would have to forfeit in this situation, and my understanding is that Peter Rothe pressed the Taylor team for a forfeit.
I really have no idea what the actual rule is in this situation (it may be time to do some homework!!!), but it seems unfair to me that the home team should have to forfeit. We would run into situations, with our public facilities controlling the lights, where teams stalled, took bathroom breaks, etc. in order to earn a cheesy win. On the other hand, I do see the merit in a visiting captain feeling that the home team has a responsibility to provide courts after his team has made a fairly lengthy drive to play.
Discuss.
Katy Coaches beat NWO 4-1 last night. Great job by the two-handed forehand of Chris Lubrano in beating previously undefeated Maximiliano Westen. Trip Norkus was a DNP for the Coaches, but apparently they didn't need him.
Copperfield 4.0 blanked GTAC to take over first place in their division. Nice win for Loken's crew.
As has been mentioned, the big match in 5.0 went Lakeside's way. Laurence Sombito came up big in Aadrian Hasker's absence.

I heard that the Katy captain tried to get the match moved to courts right around the corner, but Rothe refused.
ReplyDeleteUnicorns split up Galvez and Ahmad. Dumb.
ReplyDeleteA question for anyone well-informed on the 5.0 race. My understanding is that matches don't count in the standings unless a true round-robin is played. This is confusing, but teams in 5.0 will not play equal schedules, as they don't play each team twice. I was told that only the first round robin will count in the standings, so at this point the season will essentially "end" after six matches and the others are basically exhibitions. Have I got this right? Perhaps Craig or someone else can clear this up for me.
ReplyDeleteFrom a prior discussion with a 5.0 captain, this is my understanding as well.
ReplyDeleteOK, so if that IS true, then Lakeside has ALMOST wrapped up the title? Willowfork would have to sweep the Met next week, without losing a set and dropping less than 31 games, no?
ReplyDeleteThis may be a case where early season carelessness, score managing or weak lineups could come back to haunt someone.
I did little searching on the web. It looks like other Sections have rules that provide for postponement if the lights go out and can't be turn back on promptly (10 minutes). I couldn't find anything specific to Texas or Houston.
ReplyDeleteIn any case, this situation is easy to resolve. Just ask HTA. If it's a default, no need to do anything. If it's a postponement, just reschedule and complete. Only a fail-captain would default on the spot.
That sounds like Rothe to get a cheesy win via default. He's the type of captain that would start timing at the beginning of the match to get the 15 minute default rule. He rather win cheesy then let people play the match.
ReplyDeleteWhat the end result would be is his team will be so weak from lack of playing from all the defaults that he wouldn't get out of Houston. Rothe likes to spend his time reading the USTA rule book instead of playing.
Ridiculous tankjob by Bao Hancock and Tuan Tran last night.
ReplyDeletei believed Bao tweaked his ankle early in the match
ReplyDeleteWell, no matter what your opinion is on tanking or score managing, even if he didn't tweak his ankle it was a good/smart result for Chancellor's, as he had already won two matches this year by 6-0, 6-1 scores. Bao was possibly in the position where any "good win" (say, in the next Hurricanes matchup) could result in a possible third strike.
ReplyDeleteHowever, Chancellors dropping two lines will make it very hard for them to win the division (if that is even a goal of theirs), as they will need a 4-1 win over the Hurricanes in the rematch if they are to overtake them in the "Ind Losses" tiebreaker, assuming neither team stumbles elsewhere along the way.
These Asian guys are pathetic and I'm going to have to lump you in with them Greg since you love them so much. Mind as well change your name to Greg Ngyuyen
ReplyDeleteBao and his teammates are dumber then they look. Why would you even win 2 matches 6-1,6-0?
ReplyDeleteI can't tell the difference between Na Li and Danny Vu
ReplyDeleteTennisLink has Taylor winning the match against the Swiinngs 3-2 so either they figured it out or the drama is just beginning
ReplyDeleteIf there was a court nearby Rothe was obligated to play, ergo, they lose.
ReplyDeleteThe ssswwwiing player won the first set 6-4, and was on serve in the second 3-4 when the lights went out. This isn't the first time we have had problems with the lights at Katy Taylor HS. They don't come back on, and you could be driving for quite a while out there to different neighborhood courts to find one available. The Katy team needs to solve their persistant lighting problem. I would imagine that Rothe was frustrated since this is at least the second time they have had lighting problems at that site.
ReplyDeleteThe bottom line is what the rules say. If the rules say to complete the match, I don't think Rothe will have any problem with that. If the rules say its a default, then we have to live by the rules. Katy needs to solve their lighting problem since it is a persistant problem. The Lights went out at 9 PM.
once a point it played its a default
ReplyDeleteI believe that there is an error in the score on the sssswwwwinng match. The sssswwwinng player won the first set and was on serve in the second when the lights went out. The Katy player did not win that match. It is either a default of the Katy player or a reschedule to finish play later.
ReplyDeleteIt's a default of the Ssswing player since he refused to move the match.
ReplyDeleteWhat is the official HTA rule? They seem to change them often, so who knows what it is this year? It seems to me that the fair thing to do is to complete the match when the lights work.
ReplyDeleteWe're tennis players not tennis defaulters. Don't be a wuss, play out the match
ReplyDeleteLOL. Good luck convincing HTA it's a default with that rationale. "Ok, our home courts fail. Now, let's default the opponents."
ReplyDeleteI agree with post at 1:09 PM. Just play out the match. It shouldn't be a big deal and it won't take that long. Certainly they can find a 40 minutes or less window when the lights are on. LOL.
ReplyDeleteAccording to the 2011 USTA Adult Evening HTA Regulations:
ReplyDeleteLights: Players and captains need to take into consideration that some of the clubs' lights are on timers and/or subject to facilities closing times.
Lights have been mistakenly turned off by the club personnel or turned off automatically by a timer. If this should happen and another lighted court is available, teams must go to another court for the completion of the match or wait for the lights to turn back on if no court is available.
In other circumstances when lights are turned off during match play or if lights are not completely on within 15 minutes, rainout procedures apply.
Interpret it as you wish...I have no idea what the circumstances were out there.
The lights went out at 9PM sharp. Who knows if there were courts available elsewhere given that at that time of the night out there, tennis is popular in Katy so it may have been a problem and a hassle trying to drive around to find available courts. I think they should just reschedule to complete that match. At 3-4 in the second, that match could be finished in 15 minutes or 35 miutes at worst if they go to a third set tie break. This is a no brainer. Just complete the match. Let's talk about something else worth talking about.
ReplyDeleteThis blog gets so caught up in stupid subjects. It's like Congress waisting time going after baseball players taking drugs when our economy is falling apart.
Katy has a history of their lights going out during matches. There should be a rule when it happens all the time. The blog says the lights went out at 9PM this time. That is ridiculous. Why would HTA default the ssswwwwinnng player who apparently was up a set when the home teams lights went out? Isn't there any responsibility of the home team when their courts fail, which isn't the first time for Katy. How about a three strikes and you're out rule. Katy is on their fourth strike as far as I know.
ReplyDeleteLots of huge topics today. 5.0 was settled. Controversy in Katy. Huge tanking in 4.0. Most importantly, Freddie actually reported a score!!!!
ReplyDeleteWord from HTA is that sssswwwinnngg wasn't obliged to drive all around town looking for courts with lights that work, once the Katy lights failed at 9PM. But, the score is not final until they reschedule and finish that match. End of subject. By the way, the score that is entered is incorrect which will be corrected soon. The sssswwwwinng player won the first set 6-4 and they were on serve at 3-4 on the second set.
ReplyDeleteThe my bet is that sssswwwiingg will be the eventual winner of that match 3-2 considering the matchup at that line.
ReplyDeletei agree, that the home team is responsible for an adequate facility. if the lights turn off at 9, then have the match at 7 sharp or maybe even 6:30. it's already tough for a league player to take a night off and drive across town, and now he/she has to drive around again to find courts or have to drive back to finish up a match. katy's captain should have communicated to the schwingss captain about the light issue before they even play, so there would be no issues if the lights turn off at 9.
ReplyDeleteThe Katy coach told ssswwwwiiing that the lights are supposed to go out at 10PM. By the way, I understand that the Katy coach changed the location the night before from Mason Creek to Katy Taylor. What is that all about. What if the ssswwwing players showed up at Mason Creek?
ReplyDeleteThe Katy team needs to get their act together on their playing locations and lights. It is their responsibility to get this corrected, not sssswwwwiiing or any other team.
wow, just saw the titans results against chancellors. 4-1. ruiz in line#1? no james bui? what kind of chicken sh$t is that? finally have some respect for simon showing up and ready for the challenge. that's how you lead a team, if you are the best player on that team.
ReplyDelete"... In other circumstances when lights are turned off during match play or if lights are not completely on within 15 minutes, rainout procedures apply.."
ReplyDeleteI guess the next question is what is the rainout procedure...
"another lighted court" means one is the same tennis facility not driver around looking for a lighted court. Plus it would have taken more than 15 minutes to drive around anyways...
ReplyDeletetypo... means one IN the same tennis facility
ReplyDeleteHTA says they have to reschedule to finish the match. This subject is over. Move on.
ReplyDeleteSo how does Pete Taylor last play league in 2003 as 5.0 and then re self rate 4.5?? Thought he played college tennis.
ReplyDeleteGreg, To answer your question above regarding the 5.0 League Season... The extra matches will only count towards local Citywide Honors/Bragging rights, plus providing captains the opportunity to get all of their players their minimum # of matches. USTA Guidelines mandate that a round robin must be completed for it to count. The HTA originally schedule us 2 full round robins, but the Parks couldn't give us the courts for that long, so they shortened the schedule. As a result, only the first 6 matches count towards Sectionals Qualifications. Craig
ReplyDeleteLOL.... never had so much fun reading. Two-One was so right...
ReplyDeleteSchwingg got screwed. Taylor should have had to default. Taylor's court are an embarrassment and always have had problems with the lights. HTA let people base teams in all kinds of crazy locations. No water, no restrooms, terrible lighting, unsafe conditions ...
ReplyDelete"Anonymous said...
ReplyDeleteBao and his teammates are dumber then they look. Why would you even win 2 matches 6-1,6-0?
June 3, 2011 11:12 AM"
Because his IQ is below 61 or 60. :o)
3:42 is correct. If Pete Taylor played in college he needs to self rate 5.0 or higher. His last computer rating was 2003 which expired in 2007.
ReplyDeleteYeah Chancellor's 4.0 team was within a whisker of trouble. They were down a match point in the last match to lose the night. Serves them right for crappy captaining and horrible tanking skills.
ReplyDeleteIt makes no difference what the rule is. The important question is who has the best HTA board connections. Not sure on the teams in question, but I am certain that the HTA will take care of their own. Anybody sleeping with Randy or Cheryl?
ReplyDeleteChancellor's 4.0 is still gonna end up on top.
ReplyDeleteI agree. Vu, Rios, Montes and the rest of those tankers will get their just rewards.
ReplyDeleteHonestly, how hard it is to put together a reasonable set of rules to handle situation like the Schwingg/Taylor situation?
ReplyDeleteI know that there was a set put out in the spring, but it's 30+ pages long and still doesn't handle most common situations.
For example, how are foot faults supposed to be handled in league? I've seen guys who foot fault like 6 inches into the court every time they serve. If you say something, you are being an asshole. On the other hand, they are clearly getting an advantage.
Does anyone know of a USTA resource to answer common questions like these?
How about league captains focus on playing instead of defaulting? That would be my first rule.
ReplyDeleteBad news for all you haters out there Taylor played juco tennis for San Jacinto and wasn't that productive. Yes, he is a top 4.5 and if he gets bumped next year so be it but nationally speaking he would get spanked by other top 4.5's the only problem is he's the best in the city, hands down so when your getting beat by him remember..you played one of the best at 4.5 in the nation.
ReplyDeleteMeant one of the best 4.5's in the state...
ReplyDeleteTalk about bad home courts, years ago I remember having to play matches at Emancipation Park. There were locals smoking weed next to our courts as well as a shot-gun murder at a fast food joint on the next block -- all this in the middle of our match. Fun times . . .
ReplyDeleteSo, what does the Code say about gunfire? Can I call a let to take cover or do I have to finish the point?
ReplyDeleteYou finish the point like a man (then duck). :) My partner was so scared and shaking so much that he literally couldn't hit a ball. One of the home teamers said after the shots were fired, "The sound of music. Just another night in the neighborhood." Talk about home team advantage. hehe
ReplyDelete@11:07: Use your opponent as a shield.
ReplyDeleteOoh, nice catch on Pete Taylor. he was 5.0M at YE09, and then self-rated 4.5 this year. No can do, new rules for 2011. A DQ for the asking by any captain who cares to file.
ReplyDeletethat's right according to new rules if you have an M rating then you must self-rate and in doing so must take the higher of the 2 ratings. Also, is JUCO considered NAIA? The new self-rate guidelines for D2, D3, and NAIA are:
ReplyDeleteHave you ever played or committed to play for a Division II, III or NAIA team and either you or your team were ranked in the top 25?
30 years of age or less=5.5 31-40=5.0 41-50=4.5 51-60=4.0 61 and over=3.5
Have you ever played or committed to play for a Division II, III or NAIA team where either you or your team were unranked or ranked out of the top 25?
25 years of age or less=5.0 26-35=4.5 36-50=4.0 51 and over=3.5
News flash, the titans new player is sidny jim, that's is awesome. I heard he is better than simon and can be on the 4.5 and 5.0 for douds team.
ReplyDeleteSidney played for Rice, a D1 school. Can he self rate at 4.5? NOT. What about Babu?
ReplyDeleteThats a joke, right? Sidney also played satellite tournaments in Europe, the River oaks qualifying, and wondering if he got an ATP point. He's on the ITF website. Douds can't be dumb enough to play him at 4.5..can he?
ReplyDeleteBabu is it and untouchable
ReplyDeleteDid Babu play for Rice?
ReplyDeleteJust looked up Sidney on the ITF site. His record on the challenger tour singles and doubles combined was 1-11. Whats the big deal if he plays 4.5 he only has 1 official pro win and he enjoys hard courts, long walks on the beach, and cheesy sunglasses that make him look like a douchebag
ReplyDelete10:48 you don't get it. He will be a Titan not a Douchebag, you think he belongs to the douchebag because of the asian thing again with tran and trihn and your saying he can fit right in ?
ReplyDeleteSydney Jim = no brainer = min 5.5 ranking for playing on a Div 1 team or min 6.0 for playing on the tour.
ReplyDeleteWho is Babu and who does he play for?
ReplyDeleteJust sayin Sidney wears more bling than Lil Wayne and struts around like he just won the U.S Open. He should start his own team called the thirty thousand dollar millionaires..
ReplyDeleteHe just said it, he plays for rice and has a lot of tricks
ReplyDeleteWhat bling are you talking about boy? you don't know what bling is, I have seen this man before and I sure don't notice any bling or maybe you are talking about his personality it just bling with everybody men and especially women. So don't be jealous and a f...in good tennis player also
ReplyDeleteIs Babu a Hurricaine? Does Babu play with Vu?
ReplyDeleteBabu is a Unicorn.
ReplyDeleteBring out the babs!!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteBabu Zachariah will beat Sydney in his sleep
ReplyDeletewow so Sydney Jim would obviously need to lie on his self-rate, there is no way he could have gotten a 4.5 without lying for a second-time. Since he also had a 5.5 rating from 2003, when he played mixed, he can not self-rate lower than 5.0 regardless, but hey it worked for Corpus Christi a few years, maybe the Rice coach will say Jim sucked and he pulled his scholarship 8 years too late.
ReplyDelete8:10 looks like your a sydney jim fan, sounds like you guys know him pretty well. Now that a sign of a good player when everybody knows your business just like pete rios.
ReplyDeleteGirls, keep your panties on. Sydney hasn't signed up on a team yet so until he does no use speculating.
ReplyDeleteMy interpretation on the Mixed Exclusive rule is that it only applies if you want to play adult league the year after you have a M rating. So Pete Taylor is ok.
ReplyDelete3. Players who play exclusively in the Mixed Doubles Division and choose to participate
in the Adult, Senior, and/or Super Senior Divisions the next year must enter those
divisions by self-rating with the minimum rating being the higher of the self-rating or
mixed exclusive rating.
Babu is a beast in bed...
ReplyDeleteDoes anyone know a player named Tony Sifuentes from Eagle Pass? He has recently picked up a racquet in San Antonio. Last spring season he was self rated as a 4.0 the end of the season, after what appears to be a long layoff from tennis. He was under the radar since he was on a weak team. The only problem is in a recent internet search, his name came up with the ITA. In 1990, a Tony Sifuentes was on top 25 nationally ranked Weatherford College and in singles he was ranked 97 in the nation. He now has a "C" rating but has been bold enough to enter open events in tournaments with success. With his history, should he have ever been rated lower than 4.5? Any thoughts.
ReplyDeleteTony was a college teammate of mine who was solid on the Weatherford team how the hell did you find his national ranking from 1990? He should be bumped up next season but one season of 4.0 to get back on his feet is not cool? Great guy..
ReplyDeleteYeah I have some thoughts, I think you have no life looooooooooooooser
ReplyDeleteVietnamese Domination 4.0s-5.0s
ReplyDeleteBong thit noung
ReplyDeleteClose enough.
ReplyDeleteSan Antonio absolutely sucks in regards to policing their players. I see it over and over a player self-rating as 4.0 and not a thing is done about it. I've discovered at least former Trinity and Hardin Simmons players self-rate 4.0 and now they have C ratings so nothing can be done.
ReplyDeleteQuestion: How should USTA treat a former Davis Cup player who was not World Group or World Group II but played for the Americas but did not play satellite, circuit, or futures? There is no classification for an international player like this in the USTA self-rate profile or on the questionaire.
ReplyDeleteShould be at least equal to a touring player (ie satellite, futures, or circuit player)
ReplyDeleteSome captains have finished matches and have been avoiding reporting their scores (Freddy and Joe Warren and others). Expect to see some shady scores posted.
ReplyDeleteHere's a thought... maybe since Freddy was the away team, he left it up to the home captain to input the scores and that maybe the other make up match was rescheduled and is shown properly on tennis link. Are you really worried about a team that went 0 for the season in 2010 making it into playoffs for 2011? If so, I have some beach front property in Dallas that I want to sell to you.
ReplyDeleteSure Freddy, anybody can input the scores...as everyone knows; so quit being a jerk and input the scores.
ReplyDeleteWhat part of Dallas is this beach front property located and is it reasonable? :)
ReplyDeleteIf that's truly the attitude of the chairman of the league committee he should be impeached. "Let someone else do it, it's not my job!" Unbelievable.

ReplyDelete4.0 playoff predictions?
ReplyDeleteWho cares about 4.0, they all suck anyways!
ReplyDeleteGUILLA
Here's my 4.0 predictions. Partially based on the fact that I heard a rumor that Freddy's RPM team lost last week to double trouble last week (not yet reported)
ReplyDeleteSeed / Team
1 - Lakeside
2 - Cinco Ranch
3 - Unicorns
4 - Hurricanes
5 - Good Guys
6 - Copperfield
7 - GTAC
8 - Chancellors
9 - Sienna
10 - Westside
It could get more interesting if Westside warriors drop another match (likely). Or if RPM upsets the good guys in one of their meetings (less likely).
That being said I also predict some intentional tanking for seeds, because of the strength of the top half of the bracket:
Top half:
(1) Lakeside, (4) Hurricanes, (5) Good Guys, (8) Chancellors, (9) Sienna
Bottom Half:
(2) Cinco, (3) Unicorns, (6) Copperfield, (7) GTAC, (10) Westside
Predictions are useless, no one else has as enough sandbags to stop the Hurricane forced winds.
ReplyDeleteWoosh Woosh, Hurricanes 4 life!
Good predictions but they can't put the first and second place teams in the same bracket. The two best teams could be in same flight in regular season so they have to be fair and give everyone a chance.
ReplyDeleteResponse to 8:19 am: You mentioned players from Trinity and Hardin Simmons who are playing 4.0 in San Antonio. Who are these players? A team from abilene tried this a few years back on their 4.5 team. It resulted in several DQ's. Some moved up two levels I think. Those college programs are strong for D3. Would not want to meet them at sectionals in 4.0.
ReplyDeleteUnicorns WILL rule the playoffs. We will unleash sandwich blaster on the Hurricanes.
ReplyDeleteHe will have to be a banh mi blaster to beat Chancellor's!
ReplyDeleteMore interesting than playoff projections is power rankings. Having played quite a few of the guys out there, here's my expert opinion on 4.0:
ReplyDelete1) Hurricanes
2) Lakeside
3) Chancellors
4) Good Guys
5) Unicorns
None of the other teams have enough depth to be serious contenders.
That last post was just about spot on. I know the HTA can't know everything, but I would like to see them use discretion in seeding, like the NCAA does with March Madness.
ReplyDeleteYou give the HTA too much credit by implying they know 'something' let alone everything.
ReplyDeleteHTA could consult the coaches poll and press poll. I think this forum might be the press poll.
ReplyDeleteDoes Troy Gor still play for Sienna 4.0? He was very good. Played him last year. I would put him on the level of Minh Hoang or Danny Vu.
ReplyDeleteTroy got bumped to 4.5. He is below the level of Danny Vu and Minh Hoang yet they are both 4.0. How did they work the system?
ReplyDeletewondering how babu was not bumped up to 4.5 . looking at his record, he must be tanking
ReplyDeleteBabu from Trinity and he is 4.0, I am going to report him.
ReplyDeleteBabu competed in ITF events several years ago. Why wasn't he recruited by Freeman?
ReplyDeleteBecause Freeman is slow and fat just like Red so they weren't quick enough, but Greg Dwyer Nguyen is much slimmer and should of recruited Babu on the their slimy team.
ReplyDeleteI am confused about the unicorns. I thought all the gay teams had to play out of Memorial Park. Did Babu get the rules changed?
ReplyDeleteLove the predictions from June 6, 2011 11:48 AM. How can all 11 teams make it into the 4.5 playoffs?
ReplyDeleteOr are you just predicting the final match totals of each flight?
Memorial Park didn't have enough room for all gay teams, so some of the players moved to Chancellors.
ReplyDeleteDeucebags win 3-2 vs Copperfield.
ReplyDeleteCopperfield sweep singles - Adam Kent and John Kudrick too strong in singles.
Deucebags have added players and will sweep doubles.
I'd like to see a Danny Vu Troy Gor match up, I didnt realize he got bumped up, thought they might play.
ReplyDeleteBlack Sheep added former 5.0 Wick Cannon to the roster. Looks like Ristau is getting serious.
ReplyDeleteRistau is a getting so serious. Look at his 5.0 teams results. All they have done is tank every single match.
ReplyDeleteI though you could not self rate lower than your last rating? Can someone clarify this. Cannon had a 5.0 rating in 2003
ReplyDeleteI'd like to see a Minh Hoang/Troy Gor match up. "Battle of the 4 footers".
ReplyDelete
