The season is winding down. Keep on eye on rosters this week as teams try to add players in time to get them eligible for the playoffs. For instance, the Sienna Aces have added Nicholas Lucidi, who has been tearing up the Baton Rouge league. Also the Copperfield 4.5 team added Shaan Patel, former superchamp and star at Cy Falls High School under coach Joiner.
There are quite a few matches with playoff implications this week as several wild card spots are probably still in play. I'm guessing that only two people have actually done all of the math to calculate the games won percentages, so at this point most people are making educated guesses as to where teams actually stand.
In 4.0 the previously discussed matchup between Chancellor's and the Hurricanes takes place at LLTC on Thursday. Both teams appear to have a good shot at grabbing a wild card spot, but as I said, at this point we just don't know. Also, the Good Guys and RPM vie for supremacy in division II, playing the first of two matches within the next week. If the Good Guys dominate the two matchups, RPM could potentially drop out of the playoffs. Lastly, the CR Comets and Mason Creek square off for second place and consideration for a wildcard slot.
In 4.5 the Black Sheep and Ssshhhwings play for the second time in the last few days. Their match scheduled for 6/13 has not had its scores reported. Does anyone have any news on that one? The playoff situation in that division is, quite frankly, a mess. There has been no resolution to the disputed match between Shwing and Katy HS, but I suspect it will be finished up on the court.
The Hurricanne 4.5 team takes on the Big Bangers, who are still mathematically alive. Also, JCC Blast take on Chancellor's. The Blast have basically sewn up the division title, though technically they still could collapse. Chancellor's has been a disappointment but still may qualify for the playoffs. They have Sweetwater in the final week, so they can certainly fatten up their game percentage should they still be in the hunt.
I have a hypothetical question. Let's say that I knew about five or six players who had illegally self-rated. Having them disqualified may have some impact on the playoffs and could actually help some of my friends make it when they otherwise wouldn't. Should I snitch?

Black Sheep won 3 matches to 2.
ReplyDeleteThat's not a hypothetical question, you know more than 5 or 6 players that illegally self-rated. And you would only snitch if it benefitted you, Htown.
ReplyDeleteIt's not snitching. It's keeping the league fair and attempting to have all teams play with the same rules. I'm so tired of people not doing anything to call out cheaters and liars.
ReplyDeleteNames - or don't say anything about it. If not you, at least someone else can.
ReplyDeleteI think as a city we all need to decide if we are going to let illegal self-rating go on or not. I see where a lot of the other cities don't bother to monitor new self-rates at all.
ReplyDeletehtown, it's not snitching. there are cheaters who would do anything to win. report their names and let usta deal with them. who cares if that would take them out of playoff contention. obviously the captains knew the risk before playing them. report all cheaters
ReplyDeleteIt's only a game people.
ReplyDeleteYou tell that to Red/Freeman who get ex-college tennis players to play below their level.
ReplyDeletePart of the reason this came up was that a reader notified me this week that he had discovered that Jason Wilks, who is on an Austin team, is an illegal self-rate. I had noticed an irregularity with Wilks' rating earlier in the year but had shrugged it off.
ReplyDeleteAnyway, the discoverer was not a captain and DQ-ing Wilks would have little to no bearing on his team (except in the unlikely event that his team makes it to Sectionals and meets Austin). But it got me to thinking about the circumstances in which one should report an illegal self-rate.
Incidentally, I called Todd Reid on a fact finding mission and found out that I, as a co-captain, can not formally protest a player. I would have to be a captain.
If you've read the Austin blog in the last couple of days I'm sure you're aware of the Wilks situation. I've heard that he may have been DQ'd, but that's unofficial and may be just a vicious rumor at this point.
Anyway, I've done nothing but am trying to get a sense of what people think is the "right" thing to do.
You are correct 9:59... It's like Red entering an eating contest or a buffet. No way the other competitors/restaurant can win.
ReplyDeleteAlso, there is a Houstonian mentioned as illegal on the Austin blog...he is one of those 6 or so people I was aware of.
ReplyDeleteWhat level are the other 5 players?
ReplyDeleteHas Houston had a lot of Disqualifications the past few years?
ReplyDeleteIs it the guy that constantly yells out "vagina" at Memorial? He should be DQ'd. He's a suspect 4.5.
ReplyDeleteHow about the Korean dude who is now playing under a different name after he got bumped up? Should his entire team get disqualified?
ReplyDeletehow can you tell them apart?
ReplyDelete11:10 damn!!! kinda funny, but yes racist.
ReplyDeleteI don't think it's racist to say you have trouble discerning the differences between individuals of some races. It's a fact.
ReplyDeleteWhy would you not report a cheater?
ReplyDeleteAll this talk of teaching pro's in 4.0? They should all be reported. That's just ridiculous. If Houston tennis isn't competitive it won't grow, and if it doesn't grow then you're stuck playing the same people over and over again. That's going to be less fun for you.
I'm pretty sure Htown isn't talking about the teaching pros playing 4.0. Those guys are on his team.
ReplyDeleteI play in Dallas and we always try and control the illegal self rates. Each city should manage its own self rates. It is not always easy but needs to be done. So HH I would definitely turn them in no matter what level they play.
ReplyDeleteWhat are the names of the teaching pro's in 4.0? I'm a captain I will report them.
ReplyDeleteReport them for what, having a job?
ReplyDeleteNo, not for having a job but for being better than my players. Anyone that beats my guys are clearly out of level because my guys are all computer rated and should be considered the top players in 4.0. This is just the facts. These cheaters should not get away with being better than my players.
ReplyDeleteIsn't having a job illegal under Obama?
ReplyDeleteEinstein, teaching pros can play 4.0.
ReplyDeleteI am waiting until city playoffs to report the Korean guy since he is not in my division.
ReplyDeleteQuestion for the masses:
ReplyDeleteWho do you think the top 5 players (aka sandbaggers) are at each level?
4.5
ReplyDeleteJohn Kudrick
Greg Jones
4.0
Danny Vu
I have not snitched in the past and cost my team a spot at sectionals. I wish I had snitched to give my teammates a fare chance. We were mostly "c" rated player with 2 self rated players on the roster. No cheating with my self rated players. We were just all of equal ability. A deep roster is what it should take to win but then ringers/cheaters are to destroy strong team playing by the rules.
ReplyDeleteGeez, can we go one week without someone making a list of the best players! look back to week 1, the list is still the same. Ok new list:
ReplyDeleteWho are the most under-rated players in the league?
Big Bangers bust. Freddy is a cheater. Illegal self rate reported. DQ's to follow.
ReplyDeletelist from 4.5 week1
ReplyDelete1. John Kudrick
2. Greg Medford
3. Ed Hess
4. Peter Borkop
5. Ted Phoummarath
6. James Bui
7. Hung Nguyen
8. Huy Nguyen
new list:
1. kudrick
2. taylor
3. hess
4. kent
5. quack
6. puma
7. medford
8. sanborn
9. muhala
10. james
20. Simon jim
ReplyDelete98. Pete Rios
ReplyDeletewho is the korean guy?
ReplyDeleteWho is the biggest dick in league. Give me a ranking and the reason/incident.
ReplyDeleteIt's Freddie and he's in my nightmare with those claw thingys.
ReplyDeletei'm confused...is freddy the Korean guy or the dick? Please be more specific
ReplyDeleteBrad Beinart, former 4.5 from 3.5 now 4.0 on Danny Vu's team. Sandbagger on Dwyer's team? Never.
ReplyDeleteIt has to be Mike Burch. I've seen his bad attitude on the court and wanting to fight all the time.
ReplyDeleteFreddie's the Korean guy.
Here's a list of 4.0 Self-rated talent with this summer's record (many of them have played and won as 4.5s)... no wonder hurricanes, chancellors, unicorns and RPM are so good... are any of these players DQ worthy?? I am sure more then one...
ReplyDeleteHusain Virani - Unicorns (5-0 record)
Kevin Lotz - Unicorns (2-0 record)
Victor Lu - Unicorns (3-0 record)
Timothy Russell - Unicorns (3-1 record)
Brian Mandell - Hurricanes (2-0)
Gregory Nitayamakin - Hurricanes (4-0)
Alex Phan - Hurricanes (5-1)

Arata Yamaguchi - Hurricanes (6-1)
CHANCELLORS
David Frederick -(4-1)
Bao Hangoc - (4-1)
Quang Hoang -
Kim Lequoc - (4-1)
George Guadalupe Ross - (4-1)
RPM
Steven Harold - (4-0)
David Rials
Soda Heng
Theodore Ryan Shaffer - (3-0)
Jonathan Warshaw
Thanks for the list... I will notify Todd Reed asap.
ReplyDeleteyou're an idiot, look at lakeside, wranglers, good guys also many players undefeated, you should look at the scorelines instead, lakeside is even worse, only losing 1 match in the entire season, and look at their wins, all incredibly easy
ReplyDeleteLakeside has no self rated players and neither do the good guys... That list was of only self rated players ...
ReplyDeleteOnly self rated players can be DQ'ed you penis.
ReplyDeleteI believe you can protest a "c" rated player but the USTA says there is a less than 10% chance of success
ReplyDeleteWho is Beinart?
ReplyDeleteIt seems reasonable that we request everyone on that list be reviewed.
ReplyDeleteHow do we go about that? We need a captain from each of those divisions to make the request?
Rumors has it that all of Men 4.5 Division 3 will DQed for playing in such a lame division.
ReplyDeleteLast I checked I don't believe winning are grounds for DQ.
ReplyDeleteWinning at the 4.5 level then self rating and dominating at the 4.0 level is grounds in my opinion... And if you check half the people on that list have done that.
ReplyDeleteAlso, if a player did not disclose their past playing experience (college Super Chmp, ect.) They should be DQ once evidence can show they self rated to low. Even if they suck in and secured a computer rating. Many new players do not understand and are doing what captains instruct. This is sad.
ReplyDeleteIf a team conveniently becomes populated by a bunch of self rated players right before the summer session and those players are winning then you're damn right its grounds for at least an investigation... i say we get this looked at as well
ReplyDeletewhy dont u pussies just step your game up
ReplyDeleteyou think they are going to dq any self rated players that win? trust me todd reed doesnt want to deal with that
ReplyDelete7:40 there's no rule or precedence that I know of supporting this although I would definitely support one. I don't think players should be "grandfathered" just because they are a C player and their record supports their level if they illegally entered the system the year before by lying on their self-rate profile.
ReplyDeleteThere is a huge disconnect in the self rating of Super Champs. How is it that a top 20 superchamp has to rate 5.5 but if you are 21 and higher you can rate 4.5 - not consistent at all. Clearly it can be shown that in general a superchamp ranked 21 to about 40 typically plays for a D1 or nationally ranked D2/D3 school.
ReplyDeleteYOU CANNOT PROTEST A "C" or "B" PLAYER. There is 0% chance of winning that case.
ReplyDeleteI think you guys need to concentrate more on your job and family, tennis is recreational and we should make it that and for those who are sandbaggers cooool, you guys get to pay your way to state and nationals
ReplyDelete9.59... There's a thing called age and not having played for years. Like everything in the world today, everything has become more and more competitive. U just have to play more than one night a week to get better.
ReplyDeletemy team has done horrible because of these self rated players!! they should be investigated and DQed, but I know from experience it is difficult to prove.
ReplyDeletetimothy russell had a bye, played an 80 year old in one singles, and played the same 80 year old in the doubles match he won, that is his 3-1, he lost his other singles match to a 60 year old....there you have it, protest all you want lol
ReplyDeleteinvestigated? bitch the police doesnt even have time to investigate, why dont u try viagra to make your life better
ReplyDeleteGreg it would be funny if your own blog came back to bite you in the ass
ReplyDeleteOrozco not in the top ten? Wins over hess and cooper and undefeated this season in singles...
ReplyDeleteThere seems to be some drama brewing at JCC with all the non-member additions to their 4.5 team. Some things just are not being done right, this is not a public park.
ReplyDeleteI've got a name for underrated. Rick Boehck. I played him once in mixed and squeaked out a win. Nice forehand and lefty serve, but kind of an awkward looking backhand. I have a friend with whom I discuss league tennis who has told me Boehck is awful, which colored my perception I guess.
ReplyDeleteAnyway, I clicked on his name this morning and wow, he's got some impressive wins this year. Doubles wins over Carpenter/Ballesteros, Ford/Marco, Huynh/Vu and Deluca/Teague playing with Tran, D.Dugas and Bishop. 8-1 on the year. In his only league match this summer he put a whooping on Copperfield.
Speaking of the Dbags, I still think Alain Tran is underrated as well. Just look at the record. 11-2 in men's doubles again this year. Every year he puts up those kind of numbers.
Tran has the little mans problem, ego to big for someone with weak in tennis game
ReplyDeleteIs alain tran another one of those vietnamese guys of taiwanese who thinks they are better than they are?
ReplyDeleteso is Ben Facker going to be DQ'd?? That would make Big Bangers 2-1 and what is up with entering your other scores, Freddie??????????
ReplyDeleteSomebody would have to actually protest him. Shane Daniels probably has no clue.
ReplyDeleteFreddie only enters scores when his team wins. Rizarri is running the 4.5 team anyways. He is shady.
11:50 What the F are you talking about. A 17 year old who is good enough to be recruited for and play on a D1 school should not be playing 4.5 end of story. We're talking someone in the top 30 or 40 in the state of Superchamps. Why should 1 year make that much of a difference. Once again the USTA speaks out of both sides of their mouth. If you've comitted to play for one of these schools then you would have to play 5.0 or 5.5. Unfortunately 17 years olds are usually Jrs in HS and haven't comitted yet but it doesn't take rocket science to see that history would support the theory that top 30 or 40 Superchamps at 17 are probably top 30 or 40 at 18 and probably end up comitting to one of these schools. DUH
ReplyDeleteRizarri is slim shady.
ReplyDeleteEverything is relative, Mike. To me, your slim shady.
ReplyDeleteRed Benzon.
There's nothing slim about Red. Except for the margin between him and the steering wheel but that may have something to do with Freeman sitting on his lap.
ReplyDelete@724a: I played Ben Facker last week and he is a solid player and I could tell that he may have been holding back some.
ReplyDeleteThey are smart smart to pair him with a 4.0 bump up (no offense Bobby!) and keep him at doubles to where the scores appear more competitive in the system at first glance
Being a 4.0 bump up myself I fully understand where i stand in the pecking order of 4.5 and had I played him in singles I would have been killed.
This is a good example of gaming the system early in the season to have him show his true talent come CWC or Sectionals.
Just my $.02
Has anybody checked into Wick Cannon? Thought you could not self rate lower than your last published rating? I saw Wick had a 5.0 rating previously and self rated recently as a 4.5? Is this allowed?
ReplyDeleteNo offense taken Towle, I was glad to even my career record against you. (1-1)
ReplyDelete8:49... cracked me up. I do think your wrong about some things slim about Red. There is a slim chance Red will leave a buffet early.
ReplyDeleteorozco was not put on the singles list, because his team has no chance making the playoffs. orozco and taylor have posted the most impressive wins in singles this season. eventhough he beat cooper and hess, i still think 7 of the players from the list can beat him.
ReplyDeleteHere are your players to question. Captains, start the policing!

ReplyDeletePlease snitch now!!!
ReplyDeleteNice job. Can you pull the 4.0's and 5.0's for us too?
ReplyDeleteIf we were at Homer Ford, you'd get beat down fo' droppin' a dime like that yo.
ReplyDeleteLOL all you guys are some lazy ass peeps... just because you get your ass kicked and instead of trying to work hard and improve your game you take the lazy way out and complain and bitch... again if you are loosing then either get better or bump down!!!!
ReplyDeleteLove how Greg (htown) acts like an innocent bystander when him / freeman / red are the reasons why the level of play has jumped significantly in each level.. but hey we all have to adapt to the changes right?
Greg, i'm sure we can find those 5 or 6 people right on your team...
Its like a rapist accusing someone else of rape
I think that the league's minimum age should be 21. Regardless if you are supers, champs, zats, or if the state can trial you as an adult at 18... if you can't legally drink beer with your teammates, and you have to get permission from your parents to go to sectionals, then you're still a boy, and you don't belong in a men's league.
ReplyDeleteInnocent bystander? Hardly.
ReplyDeleteHowever, I would disagree that the level of play has jumped significantly at each level. I think it has dropped.
There are a lot of REALLY bad 4.5 and 4.0 teams out there.
Let's request people get bumped down!
ReplyDeleteHTown he meant innocent bastard.
ReplyDeleteThe list above was only a listing of self-rated 4.5 players. I was only identifying the players that have a possibility of being DQ'd. Everyone else is safe. No way will USTA DQ anything other than an "S" player. And it isn’t like this is some hidden information, it took a total of 10 minutes to do a drill down search on the USTA website for “S” players.
ReplyDeleteLay off of Greg. He's doing his best to give us the scoop around town. He doesn't need to be bashed along with the others. You guys wouldn't have a forum to post your unaccountable bitching if it wasn't for him.
ReplyDeleteI don't mind the bashing (I wouldn't even call it that).
ReplyDeleteBut I do think that the goings-on in Austin this week proved that you really can't get away with illegal stuff in this day and age. Most successful and experienced captains are smart enough to avoid a player who can be DQ'd and do all their due dilligence upfront before adding him to the roster. The risk is just too great.
For those who follow ATB, they just suspended comment functionality.
ReplyDeletehttp://austintennis.blogspot.com/2011/06/yupits-gone.html
Interesting.
Is Troy Gore sanbagging at 4.5? I saw he lost pretty badly in singles and doubles. I played him in the fall and thought he would be a really strong singles guy this summer.
ReplyDeletethere are a lot of sandbaggers on the aces and spinners team.
ReplyDeleteat 12:33,
ReplyDeletethere are sandbaggers on every team. look at pecan grove ffs, the line one singles player is truly a 4.5.
same can be said about arrata on the hurricanes team, and timothy on the unicorns.
those players should be booted and DQ'd!!!!
Troy Gor has a huge kick serve for a 4 footer...
ReplyDeletenow that the season is winding down and the realization that teams are out, people are starting to whine and try to blame others for their failures.
ReplyDeleteThe evidence is out there if a captain wants to protest a player, it's up to us to police the self raters. Stop yo complaining and send an email to yo captain to submit a protest. Don't sit on yo fat ass and expect someone else to do it. Otherwise, you will play these same players next years, and still be whining about it.
ReplyDeleteThen get off that same fat ass and go out and work on yo game, cause the new players are only getting younger...
I think Tran is about 4ft tall also
ReplyDeleteyou mean tran 4ft tall without a serve?
ReplyDeletewhy is it that the person that recruites the best players in the league are the one that don't know how to play the game...Im sure we can come up with a top 10 list
ReplyDeleteMy point is that if these players at Lakeside who are computer rated are winning with more margin.than self rated players that just means that there are weaker teams and weaker players
ReplyDeleteCould also mean that being Cs and Bs they don't have to manage their scores.
ReplyDeleteha ha "little man syndrome" right? That's original. Sure beats having "little penis issues", at least that's what your wife AND your boyfriends said.
ReplyDeleteWhat about fat ankle knankles syndrome?
ReplyDeleteWhat's up with all the DQ and 4-0 and 4-5?
ReplyDeleteAll I see here is a bunch of QQ, who are about to get some 0-6, 0-6.
OK HERE'S HOW HTA BOARD SHOULD HANDLE GUILTY SANDBAGGERS AFTER AN HTA BOARD INVESTIGATION, IF THE SANDBAGGER PLAYS A MATCH AND FOUND GUILTY THE WHOLE TEAM SHOULD BE FORFEITED POINTS FOR THE OTHER TEAM 5-0, THIS WILL KEEP THE TEAM AND HONEST AND FROM RECRUITING SANDBAGGERS.
ReplyDeleteUnfortunately all NTRP grievances go to Todd in Austin. Nothing the HTA can do about it.
ReplyDeleteI'm a 4.5, and if I have to play a 4.0, then he should forfeit to me. I deserve this because I'm old and have been playing at this level since dnosaurs roamed the earth, and anyone who can beat me is a 5.0!
ReplyDeleteI don't see why Houston should unilaterally disarm. How lame would we be if we toss all the good players out of our best teams before they go on to compete in state? Whoever wins the 4.0 league is not really a 4.0. The 4.5 winners are better than 4.5. Ditto the 5.0 league. This is just a fact of life.If you can't compete against the good 4.5 players perhaps 4.5 is not for you. Personally I love getting the chance to play the really great players.
ReplyDeleteI think we should DQ anyone that rats out a good player. Those people really need to stay home and protect their small penises.
ReplyDeletelet the rats sleep with the fishes.
ReplyDeleteKeep your friends close but your enemies closer..thanks to the fucking internet!! I'll DQ all you mofo's you'll be playing 3.0 at Leclear at 11 on a Thurs night!
ReplyDeleteAny results yet?
ReplyDeleteYeah, what the frak happened last night. No results posted? No chatter on the blog? Did everybody got shot at LLTC?
ReplyDeleteI disagree with the over 21 to play in the league. I've been playing in the adult league since I was 16. Way back then it was ATL and juniors were allowed. Since I couldn't afford or get to out of town tournaments easily my best experience to improve my game was league every week against 4.5/5.0 level league guys. As long as players are are on the same level then 16-over is ok with me. MAS
ReplyDeleteI have to laugh. Houston should be competing for a national title every year in every division but all anyone can focus on is winning city with teams that aren't even strong enough to win at sectionals. We need to get all these good players on one team not get them disqualified. Our league tennis is based on socialist ideals, every team has to be equal. I still enjoy coming out on Thursday nights:)
ReplyDeleteDonny Bishop
That's right. Even with all these 4.5 sandbaggers, Houston will still get our @ss kicked at Sectionals!!! Stop the whining...
ReplyDeleteSandbagging builds character. I will teach my kids this.
ReplyDeleteWinning at all cost builds character and success and wealth
ReplyDeleteI would like to file a grievance for people who are not good enough to play at their level. You're rated 4.5 but can't hit a volley to save your life. In the famous words of Samuel L. Jackson. You Need to go the F*ck to sleep!
ReplyDelete
