4.0 playoffs are almost settled, 9 out of 10 places are decided at least according to my math. Hopefully it matches HTA's math. HTA has posted on their website that it's games-won percentage that determines which four of the six second-place teams go to the playoffs.
One match remains to be played that has playoff implications, Cinco Ranch Comets vs. Mason Creek Stars, scheduled for tomorrow. The winner will finish 2nd in that flight. However if Comets win, their games-won percentage (currently 6th out of 6) won't be high enough to get them into the playoffs. If Mason Creek wins, it depends on their scores, as they're right on the knife edge. Either they'll go or WSTC Warriors will. Currently Mason Creek has won 52.61% of their games, Warriors 52.57%. That's what I call close. Likely they'd stay ahead of Warriors if they win the match, but not guaranteed. I'm sure both teams are stand-up guys so if I were Warriors I wouldn't bother to send a scout to observe... GTAC, MPTC-RPM, Chancellors, and Sienna look to be in the playoffs by my calculations.
Seedings are another matter. Nobody but HTA knows what the seeding criteria will be, and possibly they don't even know yet. Perhaps some judgment will factor in, as you'd hate to see (say) Hurricanes, Chancellors, and Lakeside all in the same playoff flight simply by virtue of dumb numbers. But if it's done by numbers, then no matter which statistic is used (match winning percentage, line winning percentage, whatever), Lakeside would be top seed followed by Cinco Ranch Wranglers. After that it would depend on which statistic is used. If it's percent of games won, and assuming the flight winners are seeded ahead of the 2nd-place teams, then Unicorns, Good Guys, Copperfield, and Hurricanes (the price paid for score management) would be 3rd through 6th seeds. If it's by any other statistic - well you can read the standings as easliy as I.

How does the Warriors win % compare to GTAC? The Warriors still have to play the last place team in their division, thus there win % could improve. Therefore they could overtake GTAC Slice and Dice, it's scheduled on the web site for 6/30 how is that going to work?
ReplyDeleteHmm, you're right, GTAC's games-won % is 53.5%, so Warriors could easily overtake them, honestly or otherwise. Hopefully we won't see a team default from Wolf Pack, in which case the scores wouldn't count for games won/lost and Warriors would be hosed.
ReplyDeleteNG
how are defaults and 3rd set tie breakers handled in the game won % to games lost calculation. Are defaults totally excluded and 3rd set TB's equal 1 game?
ReplyDeleteDefaults are scored as a 6-0, 6-0 win (and 0-6, 0-6 loss). Team defaults (three or more lines defaulted) are completely excluded. 3STB's count as 1 game. Retired matches are scored by crediting the winner with enough additional games won (and the loser enough additional games lost) to complete the match. In other words, 1-5 Retired is scored as 7-5, 6-0.
ReplyDeleteNG
Ahhh, the reality of percentage of games won is setting in.
ReplyDelete"Hopefully we won't see a team default from Wolf Pack, in which case the scores wouldn't count for games won/lost and Warriors would be hosed."
I guess it depends on whom is friends with who.
Let all the closed door under the table deals begin!!!!
ReplyDeleteI've actually heard that HTA has the pools for 4.0 all worked out.
ReplyDeleteThere will be one 9 team pool with everybody but Freddie's team and one pool with Freddie's team. The winners of the pools will play on Sunday with the loser getting a wildcard to Sectionals.
If I was the captain of the Warriors, I'd be doling out some serious jack to set up a nice tennis party for at least 4 WolfPack players to come out this weekend, form 3 lines and play a few games. In fact, the fewer, the better!
ReplyDeleteBabu vs Troy Gor, Babu up 2-1 at Rice. Babu just successfully lobbed over Troy 3 times. About 30 people have come out to Rice tonight to witness history. Babu is alive. Word on the street is that Babu will treat everyone here to dinner at the Hooters on 59. Bring your golf clubs and stolen range balls. Kim Son beware!
ReplyDeleteMeoooowwww!!!
ReplyDeleteFreddy is putting together a league committee meeting. He wants the committee to decide the wild cards directly...just like the Grand Slam committees decide the wild cards for their tournaments. That is the only way we have a chance to get into the playoffs. Makes sense to me!
ReplyDeleteBabu first set over Troy 7-6 (9-7). Troy is angry because as he was on the porcelein throne giving birth to turdzilla, Babu turned the lights out in the restroom (after urinating on Troy's shoe from the adjacent stall). Beginning of the second set and Troy is very angry and muttered "crap" when he missed an easy overhead (1 of about 30). Tons of mosquitos at Rice. "There's a skeeter on my peter knock it off", "There's a skeeter on my peter knock it off", "There's a dozen on my cousin...."
ReplyDeleteTroy Gor said crap? He must really be pissed. No pun intended.
ReplyDeleteWhy all the vitriol toward Pete Rios? Seems like a nice guy. I would appreciate it if the people on this blog were a little nicer to him.
ReplyDeleteGotta love those Babu fools that are so ill informed that they don't realize how bad Troy Gor sucks. You guys do know that Troy Gor got bumped to 4.5 this year don't you? So far, Troy has won a grand total of 5 games in two 4.5 league matches.
ReplyDeleteOf course, that still probably makes him the best league player based in Sienna.
Sienna is a good example of how the mass USTA bump-ups from 4.0 to 4.5 have totally screwed entire league teams. 19 players, every single one has a 4.5 NTRP, almost all are 4.0 bumpups. Not a single one of the 19 would sniff the starting lineup of 4.5 playoff team. Sienna 4.5 is doomed to an eternity of summer ass kickings. Ouch.
ReplyDeleteHEY COOL STORY BROS
ReplyDeletePLEASE TELL THAT STORY AGAIN
ReplyDeletetimothy russell, this is your older brother.
ReplyDeletelets being euro training tomorrow. we'll show these aholes what you're made of.
michael russell
Troy Gor won line 1 3 and 5 against the blast last week.
ReplyDeleteThanks bro, but that wont be necessary, I made a killer sandwich last night...I plan on blasting it.
ReplyDeleteGuaranteed win.
Timothy Russell
CR Comets beat MC Stars today, looks to me like it takes each of them out of the playoffs. But of note is the Warriors remaining match, which is now scheduled for 6/30. Perhaps HTA doesn't think it has playoff implications.
ReplyDeleteNG (dang Google not letting me sign in)

ReplyDeleteDivisions and Schedules are posted, let the blog begin!!!!
ReplyDeleteI hate it when my Mom gets proven wrong. She said, "Cheaters never prosper!" Then I see what Freddy did for himself, and I see that cheaters do prosper!
ReplyDeleteNot to worry, Babu will take out Freddy's team.
ReplyDeleteBabu is undefeated this year. He is my hero. Babu is the most interesting man in the world.
ReplyDeleteBabu vs Sandwich Blaster in the finals on Sunday!
ReplyDeleteI just noticed "Linda Magid" Sheldon on the roster for Tran's 9.0 Mixed team. She's a DQ if anyone is interested. Played for Ohio State should be self rated 5.5.
ReplyDeleteyou're so boring
ReplyDeletemaybe you should DQ her.
ReplyDeleteGuess we're gonna have to put up with all the Tran teamies on how boring it is and blah blah blah...
ReplyDeleteLooks to me like Lindloff would benefit the most from her DQ. It would knock off 2 of their lines and mathematically still put Mason Creek in the driver's seat.
ReplyDeleteIs there a contact email for the guy who runs this blog?? New to the area and looking to get involved in the leagues if someone wouldn't mind letting me know. Thanks.
ReplyDeleteYeah, you can reach me at coachdwyer at gmail dot com. Welcome to the area.
ReplyDeleteSend email to Diana at htadiana@houstontennis.org
ReplyDeleteShe runs the various HTA leagues and can help you find a fall team (or direct you to whoever facilitates this at HTA).
Stay away from Freddie.
ReplyDeleteThe majority of tennis players in Houston are named anonymous.
ReplyDeleteTran has about 50 people on his mixed doubles team? There are only three lines that play each match.
ReplyDeleteI don't understand the stigma around filing a grievance against a player who has falsely self-rated themself. Shouldn't the stigma be on the person who lied and cheated to rate below where they should be? We complain that people are under-rating themselves and then we compalain when someone wants to do something about it.
ReplyDeleteyou're so smart, Mr. Obvious
ReplyDeleteThe people complaining about captains that file a grievance are the liars and cheaters who are trying to protect themselves from getting disqualified.
ReplyDeleteBabu was seen hitting against some of the top juniors in the city at the Houston Tennis Academy in Spring this afternoon. Babu is looking great for playoffs. After his mission trip to Africa on June 30, he will be ready to go.
ReplyDeleteI saw Babu at Tennis Express this morning. I did not realize he was so tall. Does he have a serve like Isner's?
ReplyDeleteThe weather forecast for thursday is heavy rain. Any idea what's gonna happen, when none of the matches can even start?
ReplyDeleteits called re-scheduling
ReplyDeleteHey Ben Facker, what is the story on your rating? Can you fill us in on how you are 4.5
ReplyDeleteI see no chance for rain on Thursday. Yeah, Facker if that's your real name. Last time I saw a collection of stiffs on a team like the Bangers Walter Matthau was managing them.
ReplyDeleteHey guys, lay off Ben. He was just doing what I told him to do.
ReplyDeleteI was at Tennis Express as well. Babu was there with Yannick Noah promoting Le Coq Sportif clothing. Both were sporting dreds - are they twins??
ReplyDeleteIt is going to snow on Thursday.
ReplyDeleteSnow is no big deal. Just bring a couple of brooms and sweep the courts clear.
ReplyDeleteUnicorns will sweep the hurricanes. Tim over Vu, 6-4, 6-3.
ReplyDeleteIt's obvious Ben Facker is a cheater and a liar. Anyone who has played him knows he should be a 5.5, which he should be according to USTA and HTA. Especially the Hurricanes 4.5 player that beat him in singles 6-3, 6-3.
ReplyDeleteI saw Babu on tv sitting with the princess during the match at wimbledon
ReplyDeleteHe sat down after beating Roger Federer
ReplyDeleteWhy won't Sugar Creek report their score against Sweetwater?
ReplyDeleteBabu was at practice today and he was ON. His serve is un-touchable. Troy was on an adjacent court and did not seem at all angry at Babu's urine shower on his shoe this weekend at Rice. They left the court and headed over to Hooters on 59 across from Kim Son at the Fountains. Babu wins with Callaway and I noticed he had his golf clubs alongside his Babolat bag. As Babu drove off he yelled, "Stay thirsty my friend".
ReplyDeleteWho is babu and who does he play for?
ReplyDeleteBabu plays with himself. Stay rosey my friend...
ReplyDeleteBabu was seen at the adult bookstore with thumbellina and her 4 sisters.
ReplyDeleteThis blog is getting lame again.
ReplyDeleteNo one give a fuck about babu, or some dumbass sandwich blaster, or rios for that matter.
ReplyDeleteBabu, please contact me at fsoewito@yahoo.com. Since you haven't played a match yet, it is not too late to join my team.
ReplyDeletethis babu talk is really stupid and annoying! i am not sure who started it but doesn't anyone have anything more interesting to say?
ReplyDeleteit's like the fifth grade in here.
how bout we talk about tennis and stop acting like idiots?
agreed. the sienna people are very immature.
ReplyDelete4.5 season wraps up this week, any further predictions?
ReplyDelete4.0 playoffs begin this week. Surely fireworks there.
at 9:37pm:
ReplyDeleteIf your team was only going to sneak in the playoffs by games won %, wouldn't you want to wait until everyone else entered their scores before you put yours in? Its pretty simple.
Damn! Pete Rios won a lot of matches playing 4.5 this summer. What's the verdict now, sandbagging 4.0 or legit 4.5?
ReplyDeleteSienna sucks
ReplyDeleteThis should answer your question
ReplyDeletehttp://www.goutsa.com/ViewArticle.dbml?DB_OEM_ID=13100&ATCLID=602643
Singles
1. Dennis Andrade, UTSA def. Martin Knobloch, TSU, 7-6, 6-3
2. Joe Olfindo, UTSA def. Aurelio Martinez, TSU, 6-1, 6-0
3. Todd Hoy, UTSA def. Alejandro Villesanor, TSU, 7-6, 6-4
4. Ricardo Gasca, UTSA def. Pete Rios, TSU, 6-2, 6-3
5. Brandon Silvester, UTSA def. Jose Rueda, TSU, 6-0, 6-4
6. Brett Veale, UTSA def. Arka Mondal, TSU, 6-0, 6-0
It's neither. It's not uncommon for someone at the high-end of one level be competitive at the next level. Pete can hang with 4.5s and lose to 4.0s (re TriLevel)
ReplyDeleteSo, Rios played for TSU. Imagine that, another playing illegally self-rating. He self-rated 4.5 back in 2010. So not only does he suck in tennis he's a cheater and a liar too. Makes sense now that Linda Sheldon would play with him too. Birds of a feather.
ReplyDeleteYou know, instead of crying over players and not being able to beat them, and desperately searching the web to find a hopeless trail....you should utilize your time better by checking out the tv guide for upcoming B rated movies since you'll be sitting at home with your hand in your pants while we all play in the playoffs. Happy wacking you loser.
ReplyDeleteRios is computer-rated now. It's irrelevant for him. Facker is not. Is someone gonna protest him?
ReplyDeleteIs this the same Facker in "Meet the Fackers" or the other movie/porn "Meat the Fackers"
ReplyDeleteChancellors misses the playoffs by 1 line in 4.5 Division V. Ouch. Bui was definitely LVP for them.
ReplyDeleteYou can't blame 1 guy for the entire teams failure. That's lame!!!
ReplyDeleteJust follow the F'ing rules - lame ass dip shit!
ReplyDeleteNot sure if anyone noticed but that disputed match between Taylor HS and Shwings was completed last night. Alex Ellingsen pulled out the win over Les Callaway, making things very interesting.
ReplyDeleteAlso, NWO has moved to 5-2, staying in the playoff hunt.
Chancellor (with supposedly good singles) lost a singles line to Sienna the second time they played Sienna. Bui didn't play. If he plays, they win that line and make the playoffs.
ReplyDeleteBui also didn't play against the Blast the second time around. Given the closeness of the matches, he could have probably pull one out for them.
If they lost a line of singles to Sienna, they don't deserve to be in the playoffs.
ReplyDeleteRios is not computer rated... he is an APPEAL
ReplyDeleteI'm surprisded he hasn't had his 3 red flags
ReplyDeleteLOL. Appeals are computer-rated. He's just subject to DQ at 4.0 if his computer rating pushes too far above 4.0 (i.e; 3 red flags).
ReplyDeleteIt's refreshing for this blog to get back some good old Rios-bashing. Honestly, Babu hasn't done jacked on the court and was getting kind of old.
ReplyDeleteSpeaking of Rios, when are we going to have that blog MVP voting that you promised, Hacker?
ReplyDeletethe babu comments/jokes are downright stupid: i.e. the "most interesting man" and all the other supposed fictional claims of "seeing him."
ReplyDeleteat least the comments on rios is spot on!
anyone that plays D1 even as bad as TSU (which is probably the worst school for tennis anyway), should at least be a competitive 4.5 and stay at that level.
playing 4.0 just makes you look silly and worsens the reputation of TSU as a tennis school!
I thought you had to be a brother to get into TSU
ReplyDeleteLMFAO - Rios played at TSU. Well that explains a lot - about Rios as a player and TSU as a tennis team
ReplyDeleteIf Bui plays against Sienna and Blast... blah blah blah and if some of his teammates won some doubles matches against Douds team they would of made the playoffs too. It's alway lame when its a team effort and you blame one person. The guy didn't make those matches, what about the teammates who did, why can't they win some big games.
ReplyDelete4.5 lock for playoffs
ReplyDeletelakeside
gypsies
blacksheep
canes
copperfield
dbags
blast
titans or big bangers
div1- even if nwo sweeps lakeside, the will only have 25 ind wins, which is not enough
div2- even if schwings win 3-2 against gypies, they will still end up 3rd place, and assuming blacksheeps will sweep phoenix
div3- big bangers will need to win 5-0 against clambakes to advance ahead of titans and it will go down to "sets lost", with both teams with 26 win
For Div 3 - Freddy give me a call. We can work out the right price to arrange a lopsided 5-0 W for you guys.
ReplyDeletechancellors fall is 90% bui's fault. he's supposedly is the best player on that team. that means you lead the team and play, even if you're in a slump, tired, or injured. it's called team tennis and he deserted his team when they needed him
ReplyDeleteObviously 3:11 nevered played a team sport before. He probably is one of those lame asses that played on Chancellor and lost one of those big matches so he has to blame Bui. Am I correct...what a teammate.
ReplyDeleteThose guys are notorious at pointing the finger at someone else, instead of looking at themselves in the mirror. Then again I wouldn't want to see that ugly mug everyday either.
ReplyDeleteany rankings based on 4.5 playoff teams based on team strength
ReplyDeleteHurricanes has won the most lines although against limited competion
ReplyDeletebui got a beating and his ego was shattered, that's why he didnt show up against titans and blast for rematch. that's a lame ass to me.
ReplyDeletesame thing happened with sarosh last year when januzzi beat him. he didnt play remaining two playoff matches.
Bui is a top player on Chancellor, but I don't believe he signed up to be captain or team lead did he. He signed up to play. I'm sure he's saying thanks teammate for all the bashing you've given me, I'll sure play with you guys again.
ReplyDeleteIf Rios lied when he self rated. Then I am now a Rios hater. Sandbagging is one thing but a lyer and a cheater is something else.
ReplyDeleteYou tell me if Rios lied. He played for TSU, right? TSU is a Div 1 college school, right? I'm not sure how old Rios is but under 30 he's 5.5, 31-40 he's 5.0. So, yeah, Rios is a big fat liar!!!!
ReplyDelete3:06 hasn't been paying attention to how wildcards are being decided. Lines lost and sets lost have no bearing on wildcard selection.
ReplyDeleteBTW, Towles, please let us know how much Freddie is offering. Perhaps Hacker can put up a link to have blog members donate to Pay Pal to have you guys crush the Big Bangers instead. ;)
Honestly, who cares about Rios? All this blog does is whine about him. His match record has shown that no matter what his background, he sucks.
ReplyDeleteThere are plenty of folks who can be DQed that need some captain to take action.
I agree. We'll be having this same conversation next year about Ben Facker and Cannon Wick.
ReplyDeleteApparently Lakeside and Lakeside Estates did not actually play their match last week and failed to inform all their players they were just going to make up scores and some of those players aren't to happy about it.
ReplyDeleteand now for something completely different
ReplyDeletehttp://www.tennis.fm/tennis-players/andy-roddick-players-blogs/2011/05/featured-fan-may-2011/
Wow 0-2 and 1-2 in the singles.... That takes some real stones to make that up
ReplyDeleteHmmm. I guess Lakeside found out that percentage of games won will be used to seed the division winners and want the #1 seed.
ReplyDeleteHope you guys don't end up with a double default and being DQed from the playoffs.
Ahhh, percentage of games won again - no incentive to make up stuff at all. NOT
ReplyDeleteHTA has done a really awesome job of butchering this season.
Matches from Lakeside and Lakeside Estates were all played, ask anyone who played. Good BS though.
ReplyDeleteThey were played in my mind, and I lost. How did that happened?
ReplyDeleteLOL. I think that Lakeside is sweating bullets.
ReplyDeleteHess over Orozco 6-0, 6-2. Hmmmmm.....
ReplyDeleteReally?
Orozco had some movement issues with an ankle from reports, Hess was out to even the season from an earlier tiebreak loss. Orozco had same issue with Westen.
ReplyDeleteWesten vs Hess should be a good one, but Hess should take it this week.
hess over orozco 0,2 is believable, but orozco over hess a month before was a miracle. biggest upset of the season. lakeside's hess/bui, the other bui, are toughest to win both line against. the only other one/two punch is kudrick/kent. everyone else has one good singles. the key on beating copperfield and lakeside is to split their singles. otherwise, it's lakeside vs canes for city finals
ReplyDeleteBabu over Orozco 6-4, 6-1 a week ago.
ReplyDeletenot funny.
ReplyDeleteare you same idiot that keeps posting about babu?
ReplyDeleteTake care of business Houston and file a grievance against Rios. He can be disqualified if he lied on his self rate questionaire which he obviously did. If not, he will be disqualified prior to sectionals by another city which is something we as a city should take care of.
ReplyDeleteRios is untouchable and cannot be DQ'd by protesting, so get over it. He can get 3 red flags and get DQ'd that way, which is something I thought would have happened given his limited success playing in the 4.5 leagues. You guys should have protested him last year before he got into the computer or appealed his rating.
ReplyDeleteThat is why it's important to stop yo bitching and do something about the new self raters now. It's up to us as a tennis community to police the players, since HTA/TTA/USTA doesn't have the resources to do it properly.
LOL. Rios and Sectionals, you're kidding, right?
ReplyDeleteThe fool is going to play 4.5 and cause the Blast to get eliminated. I say more power to him.
When I see babu, I am going to kick him in the nuts.
ReplyDeleteOk, here are my 4.5 rankings for the playoffs (assuming Taylor and Westside go in Div II).
ReplyDelete1. Lakeside - 2 great singles, 1 great doubles, good filler
2. Hurricanes - 1 great singles, 3 solid doubles, lots of depth
3. Copperfield - 2 great singles, 1 good doubles, ok depth
4. Deucebags - 2 ok singles, 3 good doubles, good depth
5. Blast - 1 great singles, 1 good doubles, questionable depth
6. Taylor - 1 good singles, 1 good doubles, questionable depth
7. Blacksheep - 1 good singles, 1 good doubles, questionable depth
8. Sugarcreek - 1 good singles, mediocre doubles
Lakeside and Hurricanes win their pools. Hurricanes split singles and win two lines of doubles and win 3-2.
Why Protest Rios. He's playing where he should be. He's capable of some impressive 3 setters but definitely vulnerable to a bad loss against a 4.0 player. He's most likely going to play 4.5 so don't sweat it. He can't hurt you.
ReplyDelete
