Yawn.

City Playoffs are over. The Hurricanes won both 4.5 and 4.0 again. Also making the trip to Sectionals will be the Good-er Guys and the Unicorns. Apparently the Marnitz-Waters match was a really good one. The Unicorns appeared to be content with the Wild Card slot, as they didn't field a great lineup in the finals.

There will be some DQ fallout in the coming days. Also, it won't be long until midyear ratings are released, I assume. It's usually right around this time. I have no clue as to whether combo and/or Tri-Level will be using the midyears.

  1. Ronald Cline from the Hurricane 4.0 team is now listed at 4.5.

    1. Did they win any matches 3-2? Did his wins become losses? Too lazy to look it up.

    2. If it had happened sooner I believe Chancellors would have made the playoffs. Too bad, might have made things more interesting. Didn't flip any results in the playoffs though.

    4. This was surprising. I looked at his record and it didn't seem too absurd.

    5. Yup, I've got him at three strikes. Eve the first match on 4/24 was one, surprisingly. The problem wasn't so much the scores, but the quality (ratings) of his opponents. Plus his 4/24 partner had an, ahem, anomalously low rating which caused Cline to look all the better.

    6. That sucks cause if the DQ had counted the win for the 4/24 match would have gone to Chancellors. And that would have given all three teams an 8-2 record.

  2. That seems quick to have that DQ in tennis link already. Does that mean that there were no others this weekend?

  3. Yawn is the perfect description for this season. I guess it seems like the summer league is always boring since the result is always the same.

    1. Here's how it worked out this year for the cheaters down at sienna
Boarman Scott Missouri City 0442 4
      Dornbos Robert Houston 5063 4
      Inting Bruce Manvel 0814 4
Kwan Andrew Missouri City 4819 4
Kwan Ronnie Missouri City 6996 4
      Rizarri Robert Houston 4006 4
      Tran Tuan Houston 9602 4

I suggest everyone on this blog write to our NTRP coordinator Todd Reed and let him know your thoughts on these rating adjustments.
      treed@texas.usta.com

If you are rated 4.0 and don't do something now, I guarantee these cheaters will be defeating your team in the 4.0 city playoffs next season. The more complaints we can get sent in the better.

      Anyone missing from the list?

    2. Philip Yang is missing from the list

    3. But the Unicorns made sectionals two years in a row, why complain asshole?

    4. Do you think Philip Yang tanked matches? Which ones? I agree he is very good for a 4.0 and can/should compete at the 4.5 level but I don't think he was losing on purpose.

Christian David Morris Cy MacKinnon def Philip Yang Joseph C. Lee 6-0, 7-6
Hal D. Hale Tommy Ristau def Rod S. Cabato Philip Yang 6-2, 6-3
Philip Yang Joseph C. Lee def Donald Dupuis Sam Ahn 6-1, 6-2
Dirk Mueller Curtis Waldo def Philip Yang Renish Barkat Halani 6-3, 6-2
Danh Mai Justin Hedge def Philip Yang Renish Barkat Halani 3-6, 6-3, 1-0
Patrick Baer Christopher Rossi def Philip Yang Chris A. Guerrini 6-1, 6-4
Robert Kane Michael Martinez def Greg S. Olinger Philip Yang 6-3, 6-1

I think people who are manipulating the system by tanking need to be reported not people that the computer ranks low because they are borderline 4.5s.

    4.0 Hurricanes
    Gregory M. Howard
    Kristopher L Knutson
    Byron Hailey
    Roger Meadows
    Evan Fontenot

    4.0 Unicorns
    Dang Huynh
    Olivier Le Coz
    kevin nguyen
    Dirk Mueller
    Calvin Miller
    Shishir Mohan
    Gauge P. Krask
    Gary Chen

Hurricanes lost a lot of talented guys, but with Freeman's recruiting it shouldn't matter much. Tuyen's strategy of tanking only one set seems to be working. Good-er Guys lost most of their singles players, look for Mei to recruit in that area for next year. Considering how good the Good-er Guys were I'm surprised there weren't more bump ups. How did Brice/Hirvela maintain a 4.5 rating while all the Hurricanes got bumped? Unicorns are the most interesting, their talent pool got wiped out. They might have a few bump downs like Yang and Lequoc from previous teams but it looks to me like there could be a changing of the guard at the top of 4.0.

One interesting result is Kevin Nguyen with a mid-year 4.5 rating. He's a self rated player that got bumped to 4.5. If he were DQed, it would unleash a string of defaulted matches that would over turn a lot of results. Thors would have defeated Unicorns to reach the 4.0 championship round, and Copperfield would have defeated unicorns to advance to sectionals. Do they go back and adjust championship results like that? Would they give Thors a shot vs Copperfield? Has anyone protested his rating, it would be curious to see how they could uphold a self rate after a mid year bump up...I wonder if real-estate baron Loken or Freddy the friend of HTA will be able to challenge this.

    1. They don't adjust championship results after it's over. Just because he's listed as 4.5 doesn't necessarily mean he's got strikes. There are other appealed players and self rated players with ratings bumped up also.

    2. That's true. It must not be how it works.

If it were the hurricane's would have lost to ace & spinners as well.
Colin Hodge is a self rate that got mid year bumped, and Ronald Cline has already been DQed.

So why would a mid year rating of 4.5 not equate to a DQ? Shouldn't the two be the same? Seems like the system is broken. Well if I was Erwin I'd be complaining/appealing Hodge's rating.

  8. You are allowed 3 "strikes", but even then, your DNTRP has to be above the tolerance level in order for it to be a strike. In other words, they build in a little "wiggle room" so that you don't get a strike if your DNTRP is something like 4.01.

Complaints/Protests are usually for something like someone lying on a self-rate questionnaire or some other similar transgression.

  9. The mid yr bumps can still play the rest of playoffs right?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. A self rated mid year bump has over 1 strike and less than 3. They are still eligible but in danger of being DQed. A computer rated mid year bump is still eligible.

  10. That's funny that the last match Yang played against me and Mike is mentioned. I asked Mike at the beginning if he thought we should tank or let them b/c shots were missed, sprayed wide. We got bored and wanted to get to the beer.

  11. I think Philip Yang isn't a tanker, but has a game where on the better days he can hang with the top of 4.5 players but other days he won't and might just look like a good 4.0.

  12. Philip Yang sucks. He has no game and definitely shouldn't be considered as a team player. He just desserted the guys this year which in my mind makes him a quitter.
