Category 5

As you probably know by now, the Hurricanes won the 4.0 and 4.5 divisions at Sectionals and earned trips to Tuscon. There are so many people who stand out over a Sectionals weekend. Some that caught my eye:

Green

The whispers started with his subpar performance in the HTA Open. "Tim shouldn't be in the starting lineup." "Green doesn't practice enough." "He's past his prime.".  While it helps having a partner like Bryan Taylor, Green was magnificent this weekend. The duo was not tested, winning all three of their matches handily.

Lock

After seeing the beatdown this guy gave to the rest of the 5.0 field, it's hard to imagine that he was playing 4.5 just a couple of years ago.

Mussenden/Martinez

Where are the singles studs? Who's going to play #2 singles behind Sydney? These are the questions I asked myself all year long. Quietly, Mussenden and Martinez have led the Canes to two straight Nationals trips. Moose destroyed everything in his path this weekend. Any questions raised in his early season loss to Schnyder were answered. Martinez seems to never wilt in the heat, and showed the same guts we saw in City playoffs against Cooper. His record was also spotless until being pulled off the court in the Championship match.

Coyle/Nguyen

I definitely weren't expecting them to be fixtures in the doubles lineup in the semis and finals, but they came up big. Nice win over Slezak and Morrison on Sunday.

The Ringers

The "ringers" had mixed results. Ringers are hard to define. Let's just say they're guys who rarely get tested and can usually win without too much effort. Bryan Taylor was exceptional. The much ballyhooed Sydney Jim really didn't contribute. On the 4.0 side, Chris Rossi was everything he was supposed to be, and more. He played 6 matches in 3 days, never resting, and never losing. It's nice when you can count on one line as virtually automatic. Ryan Reeves played well, but didn't trample the competition like many expected. His doubles win in the tight finals was key.

Janek

The 57 year old slicer/dicer had a tall task: facing a 22 year old in the midday heat in the Sectional finals. That 22 year old was 18-0 in 4.0 competition this year, including a resounding 3 and 1 win over Janek in the finals at Tyler. After getting trounced in the first set, he pumped himself up, took the second and won an emotional 3rd set breaker to clinch the title. All of his hard work and training paid off.

Beinart

Freeman calls them (us) "Thursday night guys", which is not a pejorative term. They're easy to write off. They're not in the lineup on Sunday at Sectionals, but they fill an important role. You need guys who are good enough to win during league season and yet will be realistic about their status as "role players". (Every team has a 12th best player that thinks he's in the top 6) Beinart is the best Thursday night guy in history. I haven't seen another one like him in my 17 years of league tennis at 5.0, 4.5 and 4.0.

I have a math degree, love sabermetrics and spend half my days on fangraphs and baseball-reference. I believe in numbers and think "intangibles" are generally highly overrated. But when Freeman told me Beinart's cheering may have made the difference in three matches, I believe him. His enthusiasm is infectious, pumps up his teammates and distracts opponents while staying within the boundaries of good sportsmanship.

Unicorns

I thought the Unicorn 4.0 team was the most solid one we faced, perhaps just lacking a dominant singles player to push them over the edge. Freeman and Benzon have raised the stakes here in Houston and others are responding. Houston has to be among the most competitive cities in the nation. City playoffs were tougher for us than Nationals in 2011.

4.5 Hurricanes

Just wanted to say I thought it was cool that a bunch of the 4.5 guys hung around Dallas after their finals and came out and supported the 4.0 team. There's not a lot of interaction between different levels, and it showed a lot of class.

  3. That guy was loud ass hell. Disturbing the other matches and everyone within a 5 mile radius. The officials should have stepped in. If this guy was at a pro match cheering like that he would be ejected. Real classy and great job representing your city. Peace out......gotta go take a Jason and wipe my freeman. Lol

  4. Other sectional observations.

    Sportsmanship
I have now played matches vs Inting, Janek, Kwan, Dornbos, Boarman, Nguyen (both), and Tran. I also got to watch a little of Rossi and Leiker. I have to say across the board I have been pleasantly surprised with the sportsmanship from all of these players. I haven't seen any issues with bad line calls like you normally get in these leagues, and even in heated matches they are gracious winners/losers doing things like complimenting good shots when appropriate. Even with the 'win at all cost' mentality that seems to pervade a lot of that teams actions they are excellent on court competitors. That said, I vehemently disagree with the prevailing notion that Beinart is in any way something to be proud of or someone that adds value to a team. It's one thing to cheer loudly to support your guys but attempting to be obnoxious, cheering unforced errors, yelling across courts, and being generally confrontational is a completely different story. It's poor sportsmanship. I sincerely hope I never have the displeasure of being at a tennis center where he is playing or watching a match. Outside of the Hurricanes I believe he is quickly becoming one of the most disliked players in the community.

    Talent
Houston talent at the NTRP levels was ridiculous...and embarrassing. Matches vs the other top teams really weren't very close. The only excuse I've ever heard that even half way validates all of the tanking/etc that takes place in the leagues is that the other teams all do the same thing and the Hurricanes have to do that to compete. Houston has clearly taken cheating to a much larger extreme than the other cities. I watched a lot of tennis this weekend and the 4.0/4.5 teams out there looked like the other 4.0/4.5 teams in the Houston City Playoffs. The 4.0 Hurricanes/Unicorns and 4.5 Hurricanes did not. I think we need to take a step back and ask ourselves if this is really the way we want to win.

    Depth
If you plan on putting together a team that can compete at the top levels, you need depth on your roster. I played some teams this weekend from smaller markets and it almost impossible for those guys to make a deep run because of the size of their rosters. They had to play almost the same 8 guys every match and in the 2nd matches of the day the levels dropped off quite a bit. The way sectionals work, it's more of a team sport than top 8 guy sport that takes place during the regular season. Hurricane's and Unicorns both did well by taking advantage of a lot of player rotation.

    2. Unless I miscounted, so did the 4.5 team. In one fewer match. More ridiculous.

  6. Just to set the record straight Dwyer In no way is Beinart staying within the boundaries of good sportsmanship. Hearing him yell at the top of his lungs yesterday was unbelievably annoying and completely uncalled for. It is one thing to cheer and support your teammates but to scream and be a complete dumbass is ridiculous. While the players on court all displayed sportsmanship he definitely did not and should not be allowed to do that. Hope he enjoys being benched only contributing to the team by being the guy in Happy Gilmore rather than by playing tennis.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Well, we definitely disagree on this one. I didn't see him screaming across courts, as he almost always positioned himself right at the fence. Granted, the volume was at a level that could be heard on other courts. I don't come from a country club background, so maybe my sensibilities are different when it comes to noise. I don't let any of it bother me.

When I was at UT I worked at the tennis courts where the varsity played their matches and was a frequent spectator. "Yelling across courts" was extremely common. To be honest, I didn't even realize it was frowned upon. I'm not quite sure why it's ok to scream at a college team match but not at a USTA League team match?

As for his on-court contributions, I will note that he went 1-0 at city playoffs, 1-0 at Sectionals and 5-1 during the regular season, often playing with sub-standard partners.

    2. The people complaining about some cheering and yelling at a tennis match are the same dickwads wanting a trophy for every loser playing right field in little league. America is now a nation of pussies. Grow some balls and thicker skin, dude.

      Delete
    3. Big balls and thick skin, so it don't bother me none, but it is gamesmanship, pure and simple. Keep doing it, because it's perfectly legal, but don't try to blow smoke up our asses by claiming it's solely to motivate your guy.

      Delete
    4. Response to Htown- If that MF'er was standing five feet from the court then why did he have to disturb courts that had nothing to do with his team. One of our guys even yelled back for him to shut up. Unfortunatly, his voice did not carry the same way. I wouldn't compare his actions to UT fans because they have more restraint. The guys from other teams were missing shots and catching ball tosses every time he would yell. Clearly, it was affecting people and yes the officials will be asked to do some crowd control. If I had been on the court I would have launched tennis balls over onto the Houston guys courts until the yelling stopped.

  7. Here's a question. Who the fu*K are Dang Huynh and Garrett Browne. These guys only dropped a set in all of playoffs/ sectionals with the exception of what looked like an obvious tank job. Looks like the gaycorns are starting to take a page out of freeman's notebook. Lets just all do League tennis a favor and freaking play on the right NTRP LEVEL!!!

  8. Beinart was a complete embarrasment out there. He annoyed everyone out there and it was no where near good sportsmanship.

  9. Cheering for people? Will never be DQ or referee for that-he has never cursed, never got on the court, or done anything besides CHEER and CHEER LOUD--other teams wish they had something like this Beinart guy. I didn't know him and went up to him and said--you really help your team, it's great! I wish I had a guy like him on my team! I lost and my team wasn't cheering for me. There should be more of him. He speaks openly about never cheering double faults or accross courts when points are in play. He will never cheer mistakes, only cheers are team related or his things like to "let's go". "Let's fight", "Go Houston", Go Hurriances, etc. I know other of his teammates and that's what they share, I agree! Other teams have cheered loud agains Canes too. At the end of the day, players shouldn't be BITTER they lost, but rather welcome more people that give a cr...p about their TEAMS and get more people cheering. That's what TEAM tennis is about. Not to be quiet and "pass the grey poupon"? Or be at a funeral or golf clap outing! Seriously, whoever is typing these things OBVIOUSLY has never seen league's at Nationals, Beinart is quiet compared to some of thoese teams. It's part of TEAM tennis-Either learn how to win and on the court and get more mentally tough--or get more guys like him cheering on your team.

    1. I don't want that guy on my team. If he acts that sober then I don't wan to see him drunk. He was clearly trying to get in the opponents heads. That sucks and looked like taunting to me. Thats not the job of a spectator. If he wanted to win the match then take some lessons and do it on the court.

      Delete
    2. It certainly can happen. I don't know much about 4.0, but last year the 4.5 team came in 4th at nationals. A big reason we didn't go further is because only 8 people went. The team is stronger this year, and if 10-12 people go, and, some go early to practice, the Hurricanes 4.5 have a great chance to win it all.

  14. Freeman is deserving--any captain that can take 4.0 and 4.5 teams in same year to Nationals is pretty freaking strong. Yes, he had some cheers and Canes like that, but all in all--it's what happens on the court! Sunday 8:30 AM Canes 4.5 win and go to Nationals. 2 hrs later, Canes/Freeman-win again, 4.0 goes to Nationals --Tx we have a problem--Freeman and the Canes. Where the rest of the teams? Crying about cheering and crying about this and that! instead of getting on the court and kicking ass. Yes, all the other Tx teams are at home in October-Congrats Freeman and Canes and to their supporters!

  15. I gotta agree with you on Tim Green. I played against him in the Semis this weekend when my SETX team faced the Canes. I have played him quite a few times thru the years with mixed results. My partner and I faced Green/Taylor and they are a great tandem. We played fairly well and we were just overmatched. Tim played really well and all parts of his game were very sharp. It was my first time to face Bryan Taylor and I was very impressed. He's a great doubles player. That big serve of his gets the point started well. Even though we lost, it was the most fun match that we played all weekend. It was a very fair match with no disputes. The first point of the match was amazing, but we couldn't come up with the goods enough and the better team won. Good luck at Nationals!

  36. The canes have a GREAT chance to win 4.0 Nationals. Any team from TX who wins TX sectionals, has a chance, especially some of the gutsy and close matches they pulled out in Dallas. That will help them as many teams haven't been pushed/tested under that pressure. Canes have! Yes, they need their key players, but that team is so deep, like next one up, they proved that at sectionals-no quit and a lot of fight. Yes, they do have an attitude and are loud--some call it arrogance, canes probably just call it confidence. I like the CANES! Rumor has it, Freeman could easily win both 4.0 and 4.5 national championships, he has strong chances in each! TX Sweep.....would be a pretty strong accomplishment. Go Canes-good luck.

    6. Hey it looks like most of the guys trying to get to 4.0 on this list got matches properly thrown out and people bumped to the correct levels. Even Rizarri is back at 4.5 where he belongs.

      Well done USTA!

  51. Fall league results do not count. All that counts is spring and summer leagues.

  52. I was informed fall league didn't count. That's too bad for the losers who continue to tank.

    1. Where did this information come from? I spoke with Todd Reed recently and he mentioned that was an idea they were considering but nothing about it having been implemented.

  53. Tanking is out of control. It's reached a tipping point to where it affects every one of us. It affects our ratings drastically now since we all end up playing people who tanked and have artificially low ratings. Not to mention the uneven level of competition in the league, which is ridiculous. Todd Reed, if you are reading this, please put an end to counting the ratings in spring and fall seasons in all of the major cities. I'm sure Dallas is just as bad as here, or close. Hard to be as bad as Houston.
