Early Thoughts

Yeah, I wasn't out there, and have only talked to a coupla' people, but my first impressions:

There's a new favorite in 4.0. Chancellor's (who for some reason are calling themselves the Mob Squad now) lost badly to the Westside Warriors. Rumor on the street was that Mark Etienne moved over to Westside because he thought they would be better than his old Lakeside team. I guess he was right.

Freeman's 4.0 team squeaked past the Rolido Boys.

It was a bad night overall for Chancellor's. Sugar Creek didn't use the Jim brothers. Guess they didn't need 'em. After one week, is it time to hand them the title?

Chancellor's broke rule number one when it moved its best singles guy into doubles. It's a good strategy when it works. It didn't last night, as Minh Hoang got waxed by Patrick Baer in singles, and Hung lost the deciding doubles match in 3 sets. Great strategy if a few points go the other way, but hindsight is 20/20, and it didn't work.

Adam Berry...disappointing in a 4 and 4 win over former 4.0 Derric Driver. I was expecting more, but who knows if score management was at work?

Copperfield's rumored infusion of junior/superchamp talent (I had heard they were adding 3 of 'em, but only see two on the roster) materialized. At this point they may pose the greatest threat to Sugar Creek. If they can add one or two more and these guys are as good as advertised...who knows?

  1. mark is 4.5 now, not 4.0

wtf is hung playing doubles? he's their most solid player. he would have easily beat baer in singles. playing minh in singles for a big match?

  2. Mob Squad captain sucks! He can't put a lineup that can win at 4.0???? The only captaining he can do is captain a squad of McD's employee to get him some fries, double big mack, and large soda.

  3. Why doesn't the HTA membership website use an HTTPS webpage for us to pay dues?

  4. That was a nice win for Patrick. Also, Alex Chang and Charles Nguyen had a nice win over Andres Ballesteros and Kevin Lotz.

    ReplyDelete
  5. Chuck Stasny played line 2 singles last night.

"4.5 tennis sure is tough"....said no one.

    ReplyDelete
  6. Chang wasn't on the roster. Chancellers cheaters strike again.

    1. Chang is now on the roster. Are you happy?

  7. i checked last night around 11pm and chang wasnt on the roster. sounds like a dq

    ReplyDelete
  8. Why would they play Alex? They have better players already on their roster? I find it hard to believe Hung Pham played doubles instead of singles. Why?

  9. You must be new here. They're not exactly Einsteins with their lineups. Alain Tran must be their mentor.

  10. Hurricanes very weak this year

    ReplyDelete
  11. Hurricanes very weak in 4.0 and 4.5. Both teams barely won last night, 3-2. Guess their dynasty is OVER.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Leave Chuck Stasny alone. He could be dominating in seniors; however, he continues to be competitive in the 18 and over league. Hats off to Chuck!

    ReplyDelete
  13. You idiot, you must be new to Houston Tennis. Both Hurricane teams WILL be making the trip to Dallas as usual. Just watch.

  14. It appears one of Freeman's young disciples took a bad loss at 4.5 doubles last night.

  15. 4.5 rankings

    3. blast- solid singles, solid doubles

    4. blacksheep- solid singles, but doubles is a toss up

    5. canes- solid singles, but doubles is a toss up

    6. copperfield- solid singles, but doubles is a toss up

    7. dbags- ok singles, good doubles

    8. chancellors- ok singles, ok doubles

  16. Who's the best 4.5 singles nobody talks about? 4.5 Doubles?

    ReplyDelete
  17. 4.5 singles, any super champ junior. 4.5 doubles, any super champ juniors playing together. Neither are talked about.

    ReplyDelete
  18. I know no one likes to talk about boring 4.0 tennis so how about talking about 4.5s playing 4.0 tennis. I thought I read on this blog that both Salinas and Kallus were going to play for Copperield but only Salinas is on the roster. I told you I saw them arguing on the court during the HTA tourney.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Salinas wasn't arguing. He just has a loud nasely whining voice. Anyone who has play 3 courts down from him knows that.

  20. Canes are over confident, no question Titans will take them

    ReplyDelete
  21. Why the delay in reporting Chancellors and Titans teams? Was Chang not on roster for the line win as they say? They may not be able to recover from Week 1 loss.

    ReplyDelete

    1. They may be in collusion to tally the point later; so both team can go to playoff. Inquirer minds want to know.

  22. I wasn't at the Chancellor/Titans match, but it seems pretty clear that the Chancellors captain was sacrificing his singles lines in anticipation of Simon and Sydney playing singles. The big failure was in Hung and Lan not winning their line.

If Sydney really plays, there will be a lot of this kind of strategy used against the Titans.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Hurricanes can't win a singles line against JCC Blast and they'll be lucky to be competitive in the doubles. I don't care if that Giant Mussenden plays singles. He's not beating Taylor or Berry!!! Hurricanes run is over. They are going to get B L A S T E D...

    ReplyDelete
  24. Blast is no good without Rios. They had their chances last year already. Canes will win.

    ReplyDelete
  25. No good without Rios? HAHAHAHA! Didn't he just lose $1000 playing that old hack Ward?

    ReplyDelete
  26. Houston Racquet Club came out on top in week one, can they maintain. Most of their players are unknowns.

    ReplyDelete
  27. It looks like Red is really trying to make a point with Sugar Creek this year. Some of the Sugar Creek guys are saying that there are many more players to be added and you can expect to see Odion Dibua and Soong Tam on the roster in the near future. Not everyone on the team is excited about all the new additions but they will stomach it in order to win a national championship.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Babu is headed to Sugar Creek also. Douds just had lunch with Babu at Hooters at 59 and the Fountains.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Did Freeman and Red breakup? Why isn't Red recruiting for Freeman?

    ReplyDelete
  30. Are we talking about Houston Racquet Club 4.0 or 4.5? Im confused..

    ReplyDelete
  31. Big match up this week again in 4.5.
    chancellors vs lakeside

    Rios vs Nguyen
    Bui vs Bui

Some solid singles matches. Lakeside will start up 1-0 in the doubles if they use connell/wright.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Westside Black Sheep will take it all !!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  33. Did Rios really lose to old man ward? That's crazy if he did. It just shows that he was only competitive in 4.0. Looking at his average 4.5 results he will get killed in 5.0 if he can even make a team. so so sad.

    ReplyDelete
  34. I believe he is talking about Don Rios. Not Pete...

    ReplyDelete
  35. sounds like Red is on the run. Haven't seen that dude for awhile.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Don Rios is a really good player. He will be a great addition to Lakeside.

    ReplyDelete
  37. I heard Red was helping Chancellors but all the guys he controls are on Sugar Creek.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Can someone please post the 4.0 rankings of league teams.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Can anyone stop the super champ juniors that are emerging into the league? You should at least have to be 19 to play in the league.

    ReplyDelete
  40. You only have to turn 18 during the calendar year.

    ReplyDelete

  43. What's up with the Hurricanes and Rolido Boys match being disputed in 4.0?

    ReplyDelete
  44. The Jims from Sugar Creek will stop any of the juniors.

    ReplyDelete
  45. What I'd like to see is all the top 4.0 and 4.5 doubles teams and singles players enter in the upcoming Copperfield Open in May. It will be like a pre-City blowout!!! Alot of the mirrors and smoke blowing will be left up to the results in on local event. John Kudrick owner of Copperfield runs a good tournament for everyone interested.

    ReplyDelete
  46. When is the Copperfield Open?

    ReplyDelete
  47. Hurricanes 4.5 got Ray MarMuthaF*ck*ngtinez... And y'all say they have no players... Please....

    ReplyDelete
  48. copperfield and kudrick are great to the tennis community. the problem with copperfield is the traffic on 290.

    ReplyDelete
  49. did the blacksheep and gypsies play each other? the results have not been posted.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Canes 4.5 also have Mussenden, who won the houston open doubles in the open division.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Mussenden lost in the finals and was completly carried in the doubles by is his extremly good partner who plays at SMY

    ReplyDelete
  52. I disagree Mussenden is a great player and his partner from SMU was really good too.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Mussenden is a good player. Im not sold he is a ringer in singles just yet. He will have to prove himself against the Blast.

  54. Copperfield Open - May 2nd

Seriously let's get all the top summer league singles and doubles teams in this tournament for a city wide playoff preview. This would put an end to alot of smack talk.

    http://tennislink.usta.com/Tournaments/TournamentHome_New/Tournament.aspx?T=113402

    ReplyDelete
  55. I think we should just play league and not play tournaments. There will always be smack talk.

    ReplyDelete
  56. Were all still in school, Copperfield Open is right before finals week.

Signed, A-Draw Superchamp Player who, along with 3 friends will be joining Matt and Drew soon.

    ReplyDelete
  57. Who are Matt and Drew?

    ReplyDelete
  58. Think about it. Play the Copperfiled tournament and let your Blog smack talk be shown on the court. It can almost be made a team event. Let the real players/teams show up to show off their their game before the city playoffs.

    ReplyDelete
  59. I rather show off my smack talk on the blog.

    ReplyDelete
  60. Play WTT if you wanna play a team event. No need to play Copperfield and show the rest of the city whose on your teams.

    ReplyDelete
  61. Westside Black Sheep will destroy everyone in 4.5. Ristau has got a team this year. Everyone is playing for 2nd place.

    ReplyDelete
  62. i agree that ristau has a very good team this year, and would have made sectionals last year. but this year, there are 4 other teams that are stacked as well.

    ReplyDelete
  63. Ristau and Sectionals do not belong in the same sentence. Unless they're taking 4 teams from Houston this year.

    ReplyDelete
  64. But... Ristau and speedo does below in the same sentence.
