Coke deadline today

The HTA Houston Open deadline is today. Easter comes a bit early this year, and perhaps the deadline has snuck up on some people. Entries look light, but perhaps they will come flooding in (or maybe the deadline will be extended)?

The 4.0 singles already intrigues me. 4.5 dropdowns Daniel Kallus and Mike Salinas would seem to be the favorites, but the field will also contain league stalwart Cuong Truong, tournament warhorse Matt Drake, and a bunch of "no-names" who may be ready to emerge.

The 4.5 singles draw, at this early juncture, doesn't seem that interesting. Maybe that will change.

  1. Well, looks like the entries flooded in and they extended the deadline. Every draw looks tough

  2. 87 guys in the 4.0 singles! Anybody playing both singles and doubles and doing well is going to be thoroughly tested physically.

  3. Salinas beat Kallus already this year so my money is on Mike to win in a head-to-head and for him to do further in tourney as well. Unless something has changed in the past 3 or 4 years, Kallus will get freaked out over something other than his opponent at some point in the tourmanent (net, wind, sun, shadows, cracks, a bug crawling along the baseline on the other side of the course).

  4. Babu will win Mens Open Singles!

  5. Kallu.s is playing 4.0 and plans to win the majors. The other tournments will be to protect his ratings. So if Salinas beat Kallus means it was not a major.

  6. Match is already over. Kallus won easily.

  7. He didn't come close to winning San Antonio major zone. If he is "planning" on winning major zones, he will likely be disappointed.

  8. Anonymous 3/25 8:53pm. Unless you saw Kallus give away San Antonio and saw him play convincingly take Corpus Christi, you should change your feelings and believe he can beat most all of the 4.0's in any tournament.

  9. What does this have to do with league?

  10. Let's change this blog to Houston Tennis Blog.

  11. Yeah, when can we get back to talking about the newest crop of ringers that Benson and Freeman have snuck under the radar. And whether Januzzi can beat Rios. That's the good stuff.

  12. Does anyone know when the draws come out for the HTA Open? Its still too early to talk about league.

  13. Crap... looks like the M4.5 is returning to Homicide Ford this year:
    HRC = Ages M40-80 S&D
    LF = M&W 3.5 S&D; W3.0 S, M3.0 S&D
MPTC = M4.0 S&D (some matches at LLTC)
    HFTC = M4.5 S&D
    LLTC = M&W Open S&D, W4.0 S&D, M30S, W2.5S; All special events (Husband/Wife, Father/Son and all mixed doubles) and sone of the M4.0S

  14. What in the hell is the HTA's reasoning for putting 4.5 at Homer Ford? Or any decision they make. And the fact that the Director of Tennis for Houston is the President of the HTA is a bigger scam. Time for new leadership in this city.

  15. Personally, I would rather play at Homer Ford vs. MP or Lee Leclear. Besides the area (get over it racist), the courts to me are actually in better condition. Have you played on the back courts at MP with golf balls whizzing by your head?

    ReplyDelete
  16. the courts are definitely better at HF, and you can just park and play. noise from the basketball courts sucks. MP has slanted courts and always noisy, and you get fustrated with parking. le clear is best of the three. but courts 1-3, next to the park sucks.

  17. The courts and lights are in much better condition overall compared to LLC. Memorial is a better atmosphere in my opinion and I don't really care who hangs out near what courts.

  18. If it was up to me, I would not play at any of the three facilities. They all suck compared to other Texas cities' public facilities (Waco being the best). That said, I also prefer playing at Homer Ford over MP or LLC even though it is the longest drive for me, and to be honest the area around LLC is no better/safer than HF.

  19. Anyone know of any quality 4.0 singles players not yet on a USTA team for the summer season?

    ReplyDelete
  20. Singles draws are out! Interesting seeds.

    1. Sorry I meant seeds, not draws.

  21. I don't see any draws. Just seeds. Where are the surprises?

    ReplyDelete
  22. Props to HtownHacker on highlighting Kallus and Salinas in the 4.0 crowd as these two made it to the finals in Corpus. I assume the Houston MZ will be a much stronger draw at 4.0 so I wonder at the odds of seeing one of the two making it to the end again.

  23. Who the fuck is doing the seeding, Stevie Wonder?

    ReplyDelete
  24. 6:54 Spefically what seeding are you complaining about?

    ReplyDelete
  25. I'm not 6:54, but I also notice some seeding oversights.... i.e. Audibert s/b seeded in open, Salinas and Kallus s/b seeded a little higher in 4.0, Ballesteros, Guy, Gound, and Bui s/b seeded in 4.5.

    ReplyDelete
  26. I think that Kallus or Salinas have a good chance to win the Coke. They are really low 4.5s.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Vickers? Pecor? No seed in 4.5 singles or find can win the tourney...might as well not have seeds

    ReplyDelete
  28. No seed in 4.5 singles can win? Then who do you pick to win?

    ReplyDelete
  29. David Guy will win 4.5's

    ReplyDelete
  30. I see 8 unseeded 4.5's that could win.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Seeding is based on usta tournament results guys.
If you're boy isn't seeded it means he hasn't played enough tournaments to warrant a seed. Or in the case of guy or gound are 5.0 bump downs. It doesn't mean they are not good or a favorite.

    ReplyDelete
  32. It doesnt mean they are not good or NOT a favorite. Sorry

    ReplyDelete
  33. David Guy is definitely a favorite. He dominated 4.5s two years ago and is back from 5.0 last year. Alejandro Sanchez from SA is also back from 5.0 and has won the last two 4.5 major zones. Neither of them are seeded because they have not accumulated enough points yet.

    ReplyDelete
  34. David Guy is a favorite and should be seeded. If he hadn't gotten mowed down by Sanchez in Corpus he would have won it. Sanchez is not in the Coke, otherwise he would be THE favorite.

    ReplyDelete
  35. If Sanchez mowed down Guy then Sanchez should be playing open. Guy should be playing 5.0 but can't blame him, everybody is playing 4.5.

    ReplyDelete
  36. To win the tournament someone is going to have to beat several really good players regardless of seeding. Yes it's unfortunate if two top 4.5s end up playing in the first round but thats just the way it goes. Seeding doesn't come from league play or reputation.

    ReplyDelete
  37. No its more mindless

    ReplyDelete
  38. If David Guy is the best 4.5 in the field then tennis has gone way downhill in the last ten years.

    ReplyDelete
  39. David Guy is a great player and is one of the top 4.5 players. Most guys better should be 5.0.

    ReplyDelete
  40. If one was a betting man, who looks like the surest shot to win at any of the levels - Open, 4.5, 4.0, or 3.5?

    ReplyDelete
  41. Mens 75s - Al Hagan

    ReplyDelete
  42. Open- Rob Collins is solid.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Rios will take down Collins.

    ReplyDelete
  44. David Guy is quite a bit better than he was 10 years ago.

    ReplyDelete
  45. On facebook, Greg Zachary has stated that he and his partner (Coyle) should have been seeded number 1 and will win the 4.5 doubles at the Coke.

    Is he that good?

    ReplyDelete
  46. Who is Greg Zachary?

    ReplyDelete
  47. Zachary's dubs can be pretty solid

    ReplyDelete
  48. Zachary has to play dubs as he is too out of shape to play singles. Sounds like a fairly confident guy. Seeds don't matter much anyway.

    ReplyDelete
  49. How can you post results before posting the draw, HTA drags ass on everything!

  50. Considering the median age for the staff it's just about nap time for them.

  51. Are first match times available as in the past? Would be nice to at least have that info 4 days before the event.
