Upcoming

As has been mentioned, the big match between The Black Sheep and the Hurricanes III will be held Tuesday night at Westside. Can anyone on the 'Canes roster take down Davila? If not, they will be forced to take three of the remaining four lines, a tall task against Tommy Ristau's crew. Neither team seems to have a big edge in the doubles, so the match figures to be competitive. The winner, at 2-0, will have a huge leg up on the rest of the field. The loser will be bunched among many.

I have had no word on when the remainder of the Deucebags-Lakeside match will be played. Lakeside has an edge in that one, and the loser will be 0-2 and needing to win their final three matches to have even a remote chance.

One match was finished in 4.0 this weekend. SAP was a bit lucky in beating the Cinco Ranch Comets 3-2. Cinco's line 3 doubles team of Rolph and Akpedeye were ahead 6-4, 3-3 when they were forced to retire. SAP's top doubles team of Farmer/Lopez were placed in singles but both fell to Patil and Kurki. The Daniels brothers continued their strong play for SAP in doubles.

Numerous 4.0 makeup matches remain to be played and results should come trickling in before a full slate of matches on Thursday. Lakeside will handle the Acers on Wednesday and still must get in their other match with the CR Aces as well as their Thursday nighter with the Nights. At this point, anything other than Lakeside or Sienna versus the Hurricanes on Sunday afternoon would shock me. Sienna and Lakeside will play on Sunday morning.

  1. So much hype about westside black sheep. How good are they really? Without Davila they are average.

    ReplyDelete
  2. Ummm...Who ISN'T average this year? Look at all of the 4.0 scrubs playing and even winning on 4.5 playoff teams this year.

    ReplyDelete
  3. They have Davila, therefore they aren't average.

    ReplyDelete
  4. I love how a guy that played low level D2 tennis 15 years ago has been elevated to the status of a current tour player. Davila is good but would have trouble with Hess and Borkop and would get destroyed by Gururaj. Calm down and let the "ringers" beat up on each other.

    ReplyDelete
  5. I played high school tennis, doesn't that make me a 5.5 player?

    ReplyDelete
  6. if any captains have doubts on how good or bad davila is, then play your best player on line #1 singles.

    davila vs sarosh- tomorrow
    davila vs borkop- sat
    davila vs ford- sun

    ReplyDelete
  7. The only one in that matchup might win is Borkkop. He has the game to win, the other two Sarosh and Ford would not win.

    ReplyDelete
  8. Will Tommy be dumb enough to play him at 1 singles every time?

    ReplyDelete
  9. Sarosh can win; it's called hooking...

    ReplyDelete
  10. Sarosh has great eye for line calls, he might just see every ball out if he can't get to it

    ReplyDelete
  11. Sarosh sounds like he's a joke.

    ReplyDelete
  12. How does anyone know if Sarosh and Pio will be in the same line against each other? I'm sure both will play singles assuming they are available, but I doubt Freeman and Ristau are exchanging line ups since both have winning records and want the spot in SEctionals.

    ReplyDelete
  13. i know sarosh is always up to the challenger and has a good game, but don't think he can handle pio's type of game. just like the other post said, it's like puma and pastrana, but pio is twice as better at it.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Sarosh will drop shot dinking Davila to death.

    ReplyDelete
  15. I think it will be a battle. Davila will chase down the drop shots without a problem, he moves quite well and anticipates extremely well. Sarosh knows how to change his game to win.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Does anyone know when some of the other 4.5 and 4.0 matches are being made up this week?

Due to parity, this year's 4.5 round robin means every match counts and no team has a clear advantage. It probably won't be decided until Sunday afternoon.

    I like it!!!

    ReplyDelete
  17. Sienna wins 3-2 and Rochelle saves 9 match points.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Will Tran come up with a real line-up or will he play his buddies and drink beer?

    ReplyDelete
  19. It's a beer league, so he should play his drunk buddies.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Bobby Trinh is an excellent drunk tennis player.

    ReplyDelete
  21. deucebags will take anyone on in Beer Pong.

    ReplyDelete
  22. I agree that Seinna sucks, but Sienna is good.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Expect mid-year ratings to be out Thursday

    ReplyDelete
  24. Thursday's ratings will only affect the Fall league

    ReplyDelete
  25. Towle, will you be creating excel spreadsheets of the midyear stuff again this year? Appreciate it.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Let me see. Things are crazy right now. Will try.

    ReplyDelete
  27. the dbags can drink any team under the table, too bad they will be in last place after sun.

    ReplyDelete
  28. What is wrong with drinking?

    ReplyDelete
  29. Hurricanes beat Black Sheep 3-2 tonight.

Lakeside beat Deucebags 3-2 in make up match.

    ReplyDelete
  30. My captain is willing to protest some of the illegal players in the Houston 4.5 league.

If you want to provide any information to him you can email him the links for information on illegal players to fourfiveplayer@gmail.com

    ReplyDelete
  31. Dear four five player captain,

    GET A LIFE !!!!

    ReplyDelete
  32. Anybody remember when Phi Huynh used to be good? He lost two and love last night.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Phi always sucked in doubles, very weak volleys. Add in a crappy partner and you'll get a 2 & bagel result.

    ReplyDelete
  34. I wish that last guy would of signed his name. I bet Phi is better than him in doubles despite his lousy volleys.

    ReplyDelete
  35. are u a davila believer yet?

    ReplyDelete
  36. Most important doubles shot is the return. A lot of guys with shitty groundstrokes think there good doubles players just because they can serve and volley. Hurlbert best 4.5 doubles player in HTA in last decade.

    ReplyDelete
  37. the dbags are the worst team in the playoffs, too bad they can't play at in a bar league maybe they could win!

    ReplyDelete
  38. "Most important doubles shot is the return"

That is debatable, the most important aspect in doubles is holding your serve. Phi serves and stays back to hit a so called awesome ground stroke. 1 up 1 back will lose to a decent team attacking the net almost every time.

    ReplyDelete
  39. d-bags are not out of it yet. all teams are so equally matched that everyone could end up 3-2

    ReplyDelete
  40. maybe phi can play on the dbags since he cannot play doubles. ward needs a partner then they could go to a bar maybe a bar like south beach with the rest of the dbags.

    ReplyDelete
  41. I would refrain from jumping on the Phi doubter bandwagon until you have played him.

    ReplyDelete
  42. @9:27 Were you a math major?

Look at the records of Phi and someone like Lacy or Hall or even Benzon. People with serves and volleys and no strokes. Benzon only wins sometimes because he plays with people like Dibua and Green.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Correct about benzon, the dude is slow no game at all he should be an average 4.0

    ReplyDelete
  44. Where is Green? How come he never plays 5.0 league? No Omon Dibua either..

    ReplyDelete
  45. Hey Saroooshhhhhhhhhhhhh, I guess davila keep the balls away from the line so you couldn't cheat your way to a win by calling it out. Did he just put you in your place which is a nobody?

    ReplyDelete
  46. Davila is the best singles player in the league! Too bad Ristau put himself in the line up. He's almost an equivalent to Douds being in the line up for westheimer team.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Dibua/Green are the #3 seeds in open this weekend at alamo city. They both are playing 5.0 singles.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Looks like Hurricanes 3 team are in the drivers seat for sectionals.

    ReplyDelete
  49. If Davila really thought he was good. He wouldn't be playing 4.5, maybe he can't compete with the 5.0 guys

    ReplyDelete
  50. Benzon is gi-normous right now. I'll take Phi over him.

    ReplyDelete
  51. I'm sure Davila can compete with some of the 5.0 guys. One year ago he was playing 4.0's. What a joke.

    ReplyDelete
  52. Who's the favorite to win the 4.0 league? Any ringers for 4.5 from the 4.0 class?

    ReplyDelete
  53. I don't see any "ringers" in 4.0, just some very good bump downs from 4.5. It will be interesting to see who will get bumped down from 4.5 this year. Expect a call from Freeman if you do.

    ReplyDelete
  54. The Hurricanes have to be a heavy favorite to grab one of the slots to Sectionals, Lakeside is my other pick in 4.0.

    ReplyDelete
  55. Acers are playing the Lakeside tonight at Lakeside in the 4.0 division. Should be interesting.

    ReplyDelete
  56. D Bags are gonna take it all!!!

    ReplyDelete
  57. how about some over/under on the davila vs borkop match. borkop total of 5 games

    ReplyDelete
  58. Did you see the current standing in 4.5? 4 teams stand at 1-1 and all of the match wins/losses are 5-5. Its going to come down to the very end. The Hurricane III are 2-0, but have a 6-4 record.

    ReplyDelete
  59. It's funny that the team that will decide who goes to Sectionals are the Deucebags. Since they are out of the running, the number of lines that they can take from the other teams will determine who wins the tie breakers.

    ReplyDelete
  60. Actgally Deucebags not eliminated yet. Uphill battle and lots of help needed though. Also, Sunday 4 teams should be battling for 2 slots to Sectionals. All control own destiny. It is possible that a team with 2 losses could end up with 2nd spot. Should be an action packed Sat/Sun. Hope Deucebags decide to show up and create some havoc this weekend.

    ReplyDelete
  61. 1:21 Hurricanes III are 9-1 overall, 2-0 in the playoffs

    ReplyDelete
  62. Just tells me that Houston winner may not even get out of their flight at Sectionals. Most cities should have 1 clear cut favorite or else that team is not dominant enough.

    ReplyDelete
  63. To 2:12 -- not entirely accurate.

In 2008 4.5 the Houston team played the all star NoHo team in the finals of 4.5. That was essentially two Houston teams.

In 2006 4.0 both Houston teams made semis just coming up short in tiebreakers of having a rematch in the finals and these two teams were in the same flight in HTA season play.

    ReplyDelete
  64. i like the duecebags chances of still making sectionals. next match is against bs. they will have to win 3 out of the 4 lines, cuz davila will take one line. if they pull that one off. then they can win against the titans and canesIII. duecebag's singles can take both lines and they are good enough to take a dubs line.

    ReplyDelete
  65. Borkop is a much better all court attacking player than Davila, and he can run. Don't underestimate Borkop he can definitely land a win there.

    ReplyDelete
  66. What does everyone on here think of the 4.5 Hurricanes II chances this weekend?

    ReplyDelete
  67. Borkop may land a win, but they still have to get lucky and get that match up. Hung cannot handle Davila.

    ReplyDelete
  68. All the Houston teams suck, NOHO all the way baby.

    ReplyDelete
  69. Westside will always play Davila at #1 bc they are making a statement. If you want to beat my guy come get him at #1. If other team want to avoid their player playing him, then play yours at #2, bc Westside will not.

    ReplyDelete
  70. Borkop was sent from the future to come back and terminate Pio. Hasta Davila...baby.

    ReplyDelete
  71. Sienna just got a DQ, Kyle Pfeiffer

    ReplyDelete
  72. VERY STRANGE. He has a decent record but nothing that stands out. Probably hurts him to be playing 4.5 too

    ReplyDelete
  73. So does Sienna have the 3-2 win over Cinco taken away?

    ReplyDelete
  74. Yes, that win will be overturned into a loss. Go Cinco!

    ReplyDelete
  75. No, that one won't be a loss, it will stand. Playoffs have different rules.

    NG

    ReplyDelete
  76. Correct NG...it's similar to the Dolsberry situation from last year.

    GD

    ReplyDelete
  77. WHAT IS NOHO'S BEST LINEUP?

    ReplyDelete
  78. Who Cares? Noho is going to lose to San Antonio and they'll wonder what hit them.

    ReplyDelete
  79. What are the different rules for the playoffs as compared to the regular season. My understanding is "if" he was DQ'd on strikes then all his playoff matches in pool play should be reversed. Where are these different rules?

    ReplyDelete
  80. It starts with USTA Rule 3.04A(2), where it’s a Section option whether to run ratings and DQ players during vs. at the end of any Championship (Citywide Playoffs is a Championship). Texas elects to run and DQ after (option 3.04A(2)b) per Todd Reed, verified in Texas Section Operating Procedures rule #8. Apparently this election is what causes playoff matches not to be reversed, but the player is still DQ’ed prospectively. It’s an unusual rules situation.

    ReplyDelete
  81. In my opinion it's idiotic and a huge loophole. It takes only two matches to become eligible for postseason play. One of them can be a default. A crafty captain can limit his super-ringer's play in the regular season and then let him loose in the postseason with basically no fear of negative consequences to the team.

Rule 8 that NG mentioned speaks about:

    8. In the event of a disqualification locally from a particular level of play the section has determined that self rated players have all matches taken away, while computer-rated players with a T, M or A only have their last match taken away. However, at the Sectional level, the Section chooses to calculate dynamic ratings and disqualify those players that meet the criteria for NTRP disqualification following the conclusion of the championship, all points earned by disqualified players at the championship will stand.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, I definitely don't like the fact that players are not DQ'd during Sectionals (and/or city playoffs). It makes it too easy for slimy captains (redundancy) to get to Nationals with way out of level players and can result in the truly best "legal" team staying home.

    ReplyDelete
  82. Lakeside 4.0 crushed a shorthanded Acers team 5-0 last night and moved one step closer to its matchup with the Hurricanes in the 4.0 finals.

    ReplyDelete
  83. Mid Year ratings today?

    ReplyDelete
  84. HTown you need to qualify your 734 statement above for Self-rated DQ'd players. A team should not be penalized if their computer rated players are DQ'd mid-season or during any championship match other than their last match played.

    ReplyDelete
  85. Thanks for pointing that out. Yes, I meant self-rates.

Midyear ratings should come out today.

    ReplyDelete
  86. Computer rated players can't be DQ'd so that point is moot.

    ReplyDelete
  87. Actually they can they just can't be protested. A computer rated player can still get flags.

    ReplyDelete
  88. Just confirmed with USTA that the mid year ratings will be posted late this afternoon.

    ReplyDelete
  89. I stand corrected, C-players cannot be dynamically disqualified. Sorry...

    ReplyDelete
  90. T's, A's and M's can though.

    ReplyDelete
  91. Yes, you are right. We all like Ts and As

    ReplyDelete
  92. Houston, Dallas, and San Antonio, typically are going to be the ones that win the Texas Section. Austin has a bunch of busy bodies that will make sure that there will not be any competition from Austin by protesting any player that comes close to a grey area, while no captains in Dallas, and certainly not in Houston, or San Antonio ever protest illegal players. It's more like a wink and a nod, and a complimentary, "well played Mouzer" and "Nice pickup".

    ReplyDelete
  93. And why is that? I guess because otherwise there would be nothing to blog about because all we like to do is moan and whine and bitch about the "illegal" players and rag on Red but then we don't do anything about it.

    ReplyDelete
  94. I vote for amnesty for all illegal players.

    ReplyDelete
  95. So Borkop or Hess could be DQ'd and it wouldn't effect the standings?

9:29 Any captain can protest a player from another city. Stop making excuses for Austin.

    ReplyDelete
  96. No way. In san Antonio half of our league is playing and the other half is monitoring Torres and his evil ways. Every Captain is against him in San Antonio except the couple captains that are 4.0 guys that Torres coordinates to have his guys play and lose to them in meaningless matches to manage ratings. Every year Torres loses players because they are embarrassed of him and what he does. Example : Alejandro Sanchez, Henry Manalo, Guilermo Del Campo. The list is longer of players he has tried to get on his team that we have Stopped. How does Benzon do this to you guys every year. All you guys play for 2nd place because of him. You can call it "busy bodies" or whatever. In SA Millers team has NO tankers and they are Far superior to Torres team because the better players are starting to refuse to play with him. Every year Benzon turns the Houston leagues into a joke.

    ReplyDelete
  97. What are the big match ups tonight in 4.0's? I'm tired of hearing all the 4.5 guys whine and complain!

    ReplyDelete
  98. Whatever. Lets try and get the focus off Benzon and his team.

    ReplyDelete
  99. Based on matchups this weekend, any predictions for how things shake out in 4.5? There are 4 teams tied with 1-1 records.

    ReplyDelete
  100. Houston easily has the worst reputation for not policing itself. You rarely hear about other cities having illegal self-rates that no one does anything about.

    ReplyDelete
  101. If people are illegal, protest them. Pretty simple, huh?

    ReplyDelete
  102. Houston has the reputation for whining the most. And don't believe it when someone says that captains are not making protests about players. It's being done, just not publicized.

    ReplyDelete
  103. Kind of funny how the San Antonio guys complain on the Houston blog. No one cares about you guys. If you need to justify that your far superior to Torres, than I guess your just full of yourself and not as good as you say you are.

    ReplyDelete
  104. Then why was Lock not DQd. That's about as cut and dry as it gets. Just because he was not on a team in contention. Sorry, but that's lame bc next year he'll be on the Canes and it's too late to protest then.

    ReplyDelete
  105. For the hundredth time dude, your captain could have protested him no matter what city your in.

    ReplyDelete
  106. It's a blog, anyone can and should comment. I don't care if you play tennis in Russia, Alaska or San Antonio. As long as the comments are civil and add to the discussion, then they should be appreciated. Don't be such a Houstonian elitest.

Agree with the above comment. If you think Lock is out of level, then have YOUR captain make a protest and stop asking others to do it for YOU.

    ReplyDelete
  107. FWIW Lock has a 5.0 midyear rating.

    ReplyDelete
  108. We in Sa didn't say we were good. We are not talking trash at all. It's just sad seeing you guys get scammed every year. You guys have good legitimate players that have no chance because it seems as though you guys don't rally together and put a stop to it. HONESTLY are you guys calling people whiners for complaining about a guy that plays ITF events. Thats a prime example of Houston. Look whatever. That is cheating. It's cheating stop defending it. Regardless IN SA we are going to lace them up against NOHO and battle. Whatever but you guys get taken advantage of every year. Torres tries but gets busted 90% of the time. His team has ZERO respect in the city but reading this blog it's sad to the other teams and guys. You guys that have pride and refuse to jump ship and play on a team like that need to be applauded. It blows and it's hard but at some point you have to realize what it really means if you win like that. Torres tries to recruit guys off Millers Team every year but over our dead body will we play for that guy. If we joined him we would most likely win it all with the teams joining forces but in the end we would look like a bunch of Clowns

    ReplyDelete
  109. Captains will not protest a player til almost the end of a season when it benefits their team or a buddies team. Otherwise, they do not care.

    ReplyDelete
  110. Davila was mid year bump to 5.0

    ReplyDelete
  111. Benzon is the Torres of Houston.

    ReplyDelete
  112. Thank you Saint Miller. Exactly who on the Houston 4.5 team from last are you referring to? Odion, Omon, Sumrall, Burrmann. Morton, Green, etc....where are these terrible people who get scammed each and every year by big bad Benzon?

Please, continue to enlighten us with your wisdom.

    Mi

    ReplyDelete
  113. That's not me making those posts.

    Miller

    ReplyDelete
  114. I think last year was a combination of Freeman/Green last year in 4.5. That team was very fortunate to make it to nationals. Winning 6 doubles lines on Sunday last year is far from dominant.

In 2010 Team Miller was 13-1 and 62-8 in lines won. No other team got more than 1 line in all the matches played, except for Torres.

In 2009 Team Miller went 8-1 and 37-8 in matches, Omly team match that was close was against Team Vasquez which they lost 2-3. Every other team match was 4-1.

Team Miller maybe a bunch of nice guys, but let the record show they do what every other big city does. Don't try and come to this blog and pretend that you guys are any better than any other city across the state. There is a reason the same teams come out of Houston,Dallas,San Antonio,Austin. No matter what you think the matches will be decided on the court.

    ReplyDelete
  115. David B. is cheating. Red thought he was a lock out there. His ace in the hole. Regardless of whether he won or lost Benzon cheated putting him on the roster. David B. just didn't practice to get ready. If David B had been ready he would have smoked everyone. YOU KNOW IT. That is the wisdom. So that team still couldn't get it done so now he is taking it a step further RIGHT. After all it is win at all cost. The guys you listed are all legit. Interesting how you left David B off that list. So you had one year with only one corrupt player. We commend you. David B should be embarrassed playing that level. Probably why he didn't practice. He thought he didn't need to and why would he feel motivated to play in a 4.5 league. So i guess the next post will be about how he lost. It's not about winning or losing it's about cheating. Don't be a fool and say under the rules David B. was legitimate.

    ReplyDelete
  116. Mr. San Antonio: What makes a player not legitimate? If they are way too good?

    ReplyDelete
  117. Rules. Under the rules should David B have been self rated 4.5 ?

    ReplyDelete
  118. I say you all need to shut the F up about Red cheating. I don't want to hear it anymore. Every year we hear everyone out there earmarking certain players as being way out of level and played futures, satellites, Div 1, whatever it is. We (Houston) have no business saying a word as long as these players aren't protested. Either protest or SHUT UP!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  119. David B. was not a self-rate if my memory is correct. I believe he became a 4.5 because of mixed league results. I could be mistaken.

    ReplyDelete
  120. I think you're wrong Greg. David B self rated in 2006 as a 4.5. He played 9.0 Mixed that year with 4.5 women so he must have been self rated 4.5

    ReplyDelete
  121. If that is the case then I seriously apologize. I know one thing about the guy(David B) he does not seem like someone that would tank to get rated down. The rest of the guys on the Houston Team last year were all legit. Bottom line is when you associate yourself with Benzon or Torres you get labeled.

    ReplyDelete
  122. I stand corrected.

However, in fairness, Red (or Tim or Craig) was not affiliated with that mixed team. They simply tried to capitalize on the rating that resulted.

    ReplyDelete
  123. So you mean to say that someone with a benchmark rating isnt legit? David B.was a benchmark player having gone to Nationals in mxd and playing at Sectionals in 2007. Why did you not protest him then? Let me guess, because you couldn't. Why should David B. be embarassed? He plays for the fun of the game. He shook both the players hands last year when he lost. Doesnt matter what you think.

I heard a player from Team Miller got D'Qed. I guess it was just an accident that he was on the roster. He should'nt be ashamed for signing up. He just wanted to play some tennis. We can accept that. Why did he gqt D'qed to 5.5?

San Antonio's roster is so deep with 7 teaching pros like vogl, arringdale, baumgartner, barton, ewing, white, hildebrand,. How many teaching pros does it take to win a 4.5 league? What they can't hang in 5.0 league so they play 4.5 league to beat on everyone. Where does it end??

    ReplyDelete
  124. And your opinion this year Greg about Red's self rates. Be honest.

    ReplyDelete
  125. 7 teaching pros?? Wow, I put them as the favorites now. Who got D'Q'ed from Miller's team. Doesn't show up anywhere. I thought team Miller only used legit players??

    ReplyDelete
  126. Last time I checked Red was not the captain...Freeman is. And I am the co-captain. Clearly I am totally on board with any self-rated players on the NOHO team.

My own personal opinion (and many/most may differ) is that if a player is not excluded by the self-rate guidelines or Texas Section rules, he is fair game.

    ReplyDelete
  127. Nope you're wrong - David B self rated in 2006. He only played Mixed (probably why he got under the radar) bc he wasn't on a Men's team. He was playing as a 4.5 on the 9.0 team in Cypress. He mostly played with Terri Thiessen who was definitely a 4.5 then He didn't go to Mixed Nationals until 2007.

    ReplyDelete
  128. Last fall another player from TEAM Torres wanted off so we picked him up Mauro Gallardo. He as so many others do got tired of playing and being asked to tank. We thought he was legit. Go figure then Torres protests him and he got a DQ. Lol

    ReplyDelete
  129. The craziest thing is that Torres has only got to Nationals once with all that cheating. Makes you wonder about the other captains.

    ReplyDelete
  130. Why all the focus on a player and his 2006 rating, same guy that got crushed at 2009 Sectionals? Obviously he has been working on his game and improved a lot. Hildebrand lost to David B. in 2007 but got his revenge last year. I would be interested to hear Hildebrand's opinion on whether David B. should a 4.5?

    ReplyDelete
  131. It's not a focus it's just a refute of the statement that David B legitimately entered the league. He was not legit. He should not have been able to self rate as a 4.5 in 2006. The only reason he got away with it is because it was a mixed league. We're not talking about wins or losses here, we're just talking about following the rules and guidelines of what a 4.5, 5.0, etc. is

    ReplyDelete
  132. Luke Trautmann was the player D'Q'ed from Miller's spring team roster. He is now a 5.5.

I still cant get over the fact that Team Miller has 7 active teaching pros on his roster. No one can compete with that. Next thing you know someone will say that those teaching pros aren't that good. Again, I ask how many teaching pros does it take to win a 4.5 league?

    ReplyDelete
  133. Torres has not made it again because half of the better San Antonio players will not play with him and he gets nailed when tries to slip guys through the cracks.

  134. It depends. You can have a team full of pros but the key is winning 3 lines. Technically, you could win with 3 ringers. The 2008 4.5 Women's team made it to the finals of Nats with 3 good players(Holly Lindloff being one of them). And only 2 of them went to Nats - they just happened to be the 2 best players at Nats that year and they managed 1 more win from the other 3 lines.

  135. This is the same argument about Locke (Davis Cup Player) self-rating as 4.5.

Just because his team didn't make Playoff's doesn't change the fact that his Captain and he CHEATED to self-rate as a 4.5.

He has been mid-year bumped to 5.0, but still should be a 5.5 by the rules. This is not some guy 20 years removed from his glory days. He is still a 20-something that played way below NTPR requirements!!!

  136. This was a comment made by Hildebrand last year;
Houston 4.5. If you get David B. in shape you will win Nationals in my opinion. He has mad skills but clearly is not in good shape. You guys need him tuned up. My guess on David B. is he teaches but does not play very much and you guys talked him into playing the bare minimum. If he trains you guys are a lock. If he doesn't you guys still have a good chance but are vulnerable. Just trying to help. HE IS THE KEY.

Doesn't sound like he was bitter at all about David B. Why so much animosity towards a David B?

  137. Did you get bumped up mid year Mr Anon 2:18?

    Must not be your day...

  138. It is kind of odd to be bringing up a guy who self-raged 4 years ago. Sounds like sour grapes.

    ReplyDelete
  139. Nope no sour grapes.

  140. Miller's team choked big time against Bobo/Benzon's team a couple of years ago. I suspect they are still bitter.

  141. I added Luke as a legit player and he played one match. A month later he committed to Incarnate Word and hasn't played since. His rating was adjusted to 5.5, but his match still counted because he was legal when the match was played

  142. Miller:

That is BS on Trautmann, becuase Branch has a player who is currently at UAFS which is DII, so no different than Trautmann. Again the self-rate rules are so screwed up. At least you did not play him again, but considering what TTA did for Maingot 2 years ago nothing surprises me anymore.

    ReplyDelete
  143. Troutman was a top 100 junior nationally, top 30 national doubles...thats just stupid!

    ReplyDelete
  144. Maingot is garbage, I beat him not the same.

    ReplyDelete
  145. Learned some new stuff today with players & captains from the other cities contributing their comments. Keep it up.

But most of all, it's all the same BS.

    ReplyDelete
  146. Greg the trick is to get players from foreign countries so you can't get any real information on them. does that sound like a good idea ?

    ReplyDelete
  147. I think the difference is Incarnate Word is a top 20 D2 school. I'm not up on my D2 schools so I don't know what UAFS is.

  148. So, on the women's side I think a testament of this year's 4.5 is that only 2 players got bumped to 5.0, both from the Monday league. I don't see the 4.5 Women's winner doing any damage at Sectionals. Wonder who the favorite is this year. Betsie, any thoughts on that?

  149. When was Trautmann Top 100?
http://tennislink.usta.com/Tournaments/Rankings/PlayerRecords.aspx?id=767517&p=785 certainly not here or here http://tennislink.usta.com/Tournaments/Rankings/PlayerRecords.aspx?id=693639&p=1021

  150. I don't see it either

  151. Trautman was legit and he's would have been in the middle of our line up.

  152. I tried to find as much info on Luke before he was added. Nothing I found would rate home above 4.5 at the time. If you have the info, post a link.

  153. Well, I applaud you for playing by the rules, to bad the captain of Locke did not follow suit.

    ReplyDelete
  154. I'm telling you the key is to find a player from India, Nigeria, or a place like that.

    ReplyDelete
  155. I heard that Torres' team lost and is getting the wild slot, which takes them out of NOHO's flight.

Does anyone know which city is in each wild slot?

  156. Tosha knows.

  157. I haven't been keeping up with the blog much this year but got on last week to comment on the multi-league rule and someone emailed me earlier today to make my prediction on 4.5 Sectionals. First of all, it's totally invalid to assume that the Houston 4.5 women's team doesn't have a chance. Pretty much the same teams will be at Sectionals this year and I think Houston's team will have a very good chance of winning their flight and could definitely win it. That being said, my prediction is that San Antonio will win it this year. It's the same team we played in the Finals last year and they've got 3 solid lines of doubles. Their weak link is in their singles but they've added Jan Strauss and I saw that Rita Rector and Tammy Crawford have been playing some singles. Any team that hopes to beat San Antonio better sweep singles because it will be hard to take 2 lines of doubles from them.

Locally, it will be close. Julie did a great job putting together a really good team this year and I think it will be between them and Top Guns the Monday Day winner. I give the edge to Top Guns because of experience and their singles - it's always about the singles for me. They've got very solid singles players with Nori, Carol St Clair, and Mindy Voyles. Top Guns biggest challenge will be to try to predict where Julie puts Holly in the line up, assuming she's playing.

  159. Betsie, we knew it was you as there were complete sentences and no bagging on people people or complaining about people recruiting to win.

    ReplyDelete
  160. I have to retract my earlier prediction. I didn't realize Jackie Kablesh got bumped to 5.0. That changes everything. I'll have to wait to see who wins the Dallas Playoffs this weekend. San Antonio will still be in the running, but in this case one player does make a big difference.

  161. Go TEAM!

Oh, I forgot, this isn't the soccer mom blog.
