While waiting for ratings...

A reader just passed this along...looks like some massive "bumpage" in the 3.5 and 4.0 divisions.

Ratings should be out within a week.

  1. Ratings appear to be slowly coming out as we speak. The bump ups appear to be very aggressive with very little bump downs.

  2. Here are the % of players bumped up at each level
    3.0 - 42%
    3.5 - 30%
    4.0 - 17%
    4.5 - 7%
    5.0 - 5%

Here are the ratios of bump-ups to bump-downs at the various levels.
    3.0 - 13.5 to 1
    3.5 - 25.4 to 1
    4.0 - 8.8 to 1
    4.5 - 1.4 to 1
    5.0 - 1 to 3.4

Feel free to check my math as it is not my strong suit.

  6. 2010 will be the year of rebuilding for many clubs, including Copperfield. Wow. The USTA was agressive this year!

  11. Lance,

Who are the nominees for the Houston Masters Doubles?

    ReplyDelete
  12. Good luck finding any 3.5 and 4.0 players. They are all gone.

    ReplyDelete
  13. We were told by the teams that went to Nationals that they were spreading the levels out. They weren't kidding. WOW never seen anything like this.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Who got bumped down? I didn't see any.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Odion is STILL a 4.5. Are you kidding me?

    ReplyDelete
  16. The quality of tennis at the 4.0 level will be pathetic.

    ReplyDelete
  17. There is a committee being formed to determine the top 8 teams. Suggestions are welcome! Maybe a poll could be set up on here to assist with personal opinions?

    ReplyDelete
  18. I compiled a list of the USTA ratings at 12.31.09 and sorted them by rating. Email me if you want me to send it to you at lance.loken@woodgroup.com

  19. The 4.0 division is going to be a complete mystery. Freeman is always a favorite, but being so far away and having his roster wiped out almost completely will present his biggest challenge. The good news for him is that there is little opposition left.

There are very few recognizable quality "names" left: Knutson, (one of the very few bump-downs) Ben Farmer, Dan Le, Thai Chung, Greg Moran, Walt Murray, Huy Pham and a few others were the only ones who jumped out at me.

I personally don't like the dramatic change and wonder if it will hurt participation this year as all the changes may result in some established teams not having enough players. Some bump-ups may feel that they are not competitive and choose not to play (myself included).

I haven't looked at the new 5.0's yet but I get the feeling the division hasn't swelled as much as I expected.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Any level which contains both Odion and Lynn Bellinghausen (no offense) is obviously way too wide. 4.5 is way off and there will be huge mismatches.

    ReplyDelete
  21. The Deucebags are dead now. No Beaux or Bui or Hasker.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Not so quick, they still have Ward!

    ReplyDelete
  23. When I look at the 4.0s I actually agree with most of the players. I know a most of the newly bumped 4.5s from 4.0 and by defninition should definitely be up there and can compete at that level.

My only concern is that the USTA appears to have stopped the propagation at 4.5. In other words, I don't think they skimmed enough off the top of the 4.5s and the spread at 4.5 is way too broad. There will be a lot of lopsided matches which does not make for good or fun tennis for anyone.

I agree with HTOWN, I'm afraid the net result of this is going to be lower participation next summer.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Hey HTown, we were wiped out also, losing 10 of our 13 players. I think it's gonna be a death sentence for our chances at sectionals, because a city the size of Waco doesn't have nearly the talent pool like you do. At least you can find several top players, put them on one team, and be a contender in Dallas. We are like New Orleans after Katrina.

    B. Sanders

    ReplyDelete
  25. So Matt Sumrall goes undefeated at nationals (w/o dropping a set), wins 5.0 sectionals and wins 5.0 masters.

Plug all that into the computer and what do you get? A 4.5 rating again. Awesome.

  26. not in order, top singles for 2010 summer league, time to recruit:

    sumrall
    Bvunzawabaya
    odion
    q.bui
    moser
    ford
    melcor
    phan bros.
    trevino
    rios

    4.5 newbies
    chambert
    foster

    ReplyDelete
  27. It looks like there will be some new 4.5 teams this summer. Welcome Hurricane C team, Chancellors, Bear Creek and Copperfield B team.

    ReplyDelete
  28. poor ole duecebags. lost all their singles players. but they still have morales and diep

    ReplyDelete
  29. There are a few questionable holds but for the most part I like it. Next year USTA league should be interesting but I think after that there will be less disparity at the levels.

    ReplyDelete
  30. the problem is that a lot of teams were literally split, sometimes 60-70%.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Sumrall didn't win 5.0 sectionals. He lost to Matt Snyder in the finals.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Wow houston 4.0 is in trouble if I'm one of the best players they have and yes that means I'm not that good :P

    ReplyDelete
  33. Don't worry Mike. Your still below average.

    ReplyDelete
  34. I'm going to try out for the Hurricane C team, maybe I can make it on to one of Freeman's teams.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Deucebags have the best singles player Ward Januzzi on their roster. They also have a 5.0 bump down Hung P. Nguyen, a very dominant player from CA.

The list of singles guys was pretty good. Too bad they all have been recruited already.

    ReplyDelete
  36. You know Red and Jason and Betsie have been working the phone lines. Nobody can compete with them. NOBODY!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  37. Betsie always sits out between Nationals. She's busy recruiting for 2011. Jason and Red will be back. Count on it. I just want to know when Tim and Red will reunite.

    ReplyDelete
  38. ward is the best singles player? that's funny.

    ReplyDelete
  39. All you have to do is play Ward and he himself will tell you he's a Top singles player.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Thats sounds like Ward. In his world 2 + 2 = 5 or he's really bad a math.

    ReplyDelete
  41. You guys are not kidding. 4.0 has NOONE left. I guess it is the Rolido Boys chance to shine.

    ReplyDelete
  42. If so many 4.0 players have been bumped, then we are going to have a lot of new 4.5 teams next summer if they decide to play.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Does anyone have a list of the known bumped down players? I need to start recruiting.

    ReplyDelete
  44. And then they all get smacked back down to 4.0. So what's the point USTA.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Has anyone out there won an appeal yet? Seems the appeals are a lot more stingy this year too.

    ReplyDelete
  46. anyone have the links for latest ratings that just came out?

  48. USTA League 2009 Year End Ratings
    Notice of Important Changes

The year end 2009 NTRP ratings will reflect a nationwide movement in which a higher percentage of players will move upward this year. This reflects the concerns of the National Oversight Group, the Observers (Verifiers), charged with protecting the integrity of our NTRP levels as defined below. It was also the clear consensus of many others including staff, volunteers, team captains and players that the system is in need of adjustment as too many players were above the NTRP level they were playing at. Additionally, the same issue was noted through player concerns raised in survey work. A growing disconnect was seen between the standards used in the Self Rating guidelines and the actual characteristics of players on court at various levels, along with players who had been allowed for many years to appeal their year end ratings downward.

Of the 300,000+ league players nationally, more than 90,000 will be seeing movement in their NTRP rating that should coincide with their appropriate skills. With almost a third of the players seeing movement, please know that if you are in this group, you will not be alone. We recognize that there may be initial concerns and questions, but we believe rating adjustments are necessary to protect the integrity of the NTRP and insure that the vast majority of all league players will have competitive matches.

USTA League 2009 Year End Ratings have been published to TennisLink. Click here to find your rating. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact leagues@usta.com.

The table below shows the movement of players up and down from their previous rating levels. Players will continue to have compatible and competitive matches, although many will now be playing at a different level.

Players will also find that there will be far less ability to appeal NTRP ratings successfully based on current appeal guidelines.

This table shows a broad overview of the movement of players at 2009 year end.

Level at Start of Year Total Players Players Moving Up No Change Players Moving Down
    2.5 19,352 9,762 9,590 0
    3 82,803 35,133 45,067 2,603
    3.5 121,270 36,381 83,456 1,433
    4 66,717 11,200 54,250 1,267
    4.5 18,605 1,333 16,307 965
    5 2,698 128 2,135 435
    5.5 143 1 64 78

    ReplyDelete
  49. Doesn't make sense to me. According to their table of move ups and move downs. They have 4 times more 5.0s down to 4.5 then moving up. The ratio of 4.5's moving down vs up is greater as well. Looks like 4.5 is going to be a meat market. About 40% of all changes at 4.5 were bump downs but only 10% of 4.0 changes were bump downs. They added over 11,000 players to 4.5 but only moved up 1,300. What the fock were they thinking.

    ReplyDelete
  50. 4.5 league will be a lot of fun this summer. It should be very even at the top (5 or 6 teams).

    ReplyDelete
  51. since sarosh did not live up to the hype for the last two years, is jason finally going to demote him to his "b-team".

    ReplyDelete
  52. Silly Rabbit Trix are for kids.

No chance anything changes. LLTC by Freeman/Red will still dominate because they can recruit from what's left throughout Houston.

Club and neighborhood teams will be eliminated, because new 4.5 members don't join and move in.

It is and always is a recruitment game. The difference now is the talent pool just got thinner. The rich will stay rich and middle class just disappeared.

    ReplyDelete
  53. San Antonio may be the team to beat in 4.5 2010. Take a look at what you might call the starting 8 for each of the 4 teams that made the final four in Dallas. The starting 8 being those 8 players that each city started in the semis and finals. Now look at what each city lost.

    Houston- 4
    Austin- 3
    San Antonio- 1
    Dallas- 1

San Antonio finishes 2nd in Texas and loses 1 off their starting 8. Seems they start the year at the top. With that being said, you can't be the top dog till you knock off Houston/Red. I'm sure there are some tricks up those sleeves. It is like a machine in Houston.

  55. Houston will welcome the challenge of the other cities. Houston has gone to Nationals back to back in 2008/2009 both in 4.5's and 5.0's for men. It's hard to say that there won't be another Houston Team at least in the Semis of Sectionals again this year at every level.

    ReplyDelete
  56. With Odion, Summrall, and Benzon on a 4.5 team, Houston is still a contender.

    ReplyDelete
  57. If only they could add Ward to that list - nationals here we come!

    ReplyDelete
  58. Who are the Top 4 teams in Houston in 4.5's and 4.0's now that teams have been disbanded by the ratings.

    ReplyDelete
  59. Really the whole "who will be at city in July" is impossible to predict based on 2009 rosters more so that in years past.

Will need to see who hits the streets in the next 60days to secure commitments for 2010.

I think for 4.0 Goodwin has the best core to build from with the SAP group, free agents from Sienna and who ever else he can pick up.

How funny that Knutson is back at 4.0, he should feel like a king!

    ReplyDelete
  60. The question for Jason/Red is which 3 players will they keep on the 4.5 & 5.0 teams to rebuild for the 2010 run to Nationals.

    My picks:

    4.5 - Odion Dibua, Burrmann & Sumrall.

    5.0 - Wanja, Sadler & Kudrick.

    ReplyDelete
  61. There is not a Houston 5.0 team that will be a National contender in 2010. Just my opinion.

Jason and Brian carried that team. Wanja, Sadler, and Kudrick aren't up to the task.

    ReplyDelete
  62. Where will the Hurricane's cast-offs land. That could determine which team(s) go to Sectionals. Gonna be a fun recruiting season with all the free agents.

Signing bonus has to be at least a free big mac combo, I wouldn't sign for less than that.

    ReplyDelete
  63. Houston 4.5 will not fair will in 2010 because just like last year they will lack any singles depth. This year is even bleaker.

    ReplyDelete
  64. There are some 4.5 sleepers out there that I'm sure Jason/Red will find to add. Question is why can't the other captians find and add these players, but wait and complain about them later.

Find the ringers now and stop complaining about them during the season...

    ReplyDelete
  65. We all know teams have already been decided. Only thing left now is who might get a wild card spot.

    ReplyDelete
  66. i predict the hurricane b-team will make the city playoffs.

    their roster will probably have:
narajos, foster, chambert, li. if they add sarosh, then this would be a very strong contender

    ReplyDelete
  67. Bear Creek 4.0 team moving to 4.5 and we will dominate.

    ReplyDelete
  68. I think that the Hurricane A and B teams could both go to Sectionals. Definitely the A team, and the B team has an outside chance if there is a wild card.

    ReplyDelete
  69. Welcome Bear Creek to the 4.5 ranks. We will make sure you make it back to 4.0's!!

    ReplyDelete
  70. ...their roster will probably have:
narajos, foster, chambert, li. if they add sarosh,

I agree they will make it to the 4.0 Nationals.

    ReplyDelete
  71. Did any 4.0's win their appeal? Copperfield could have 4 4.5 teams this year. Talk about thinning things out.

    ReplyDelete
  72. Looks like Copperfield could have 4 teams, Hurricanes 3, Sienna at least 2, plus Bear Creek, Chancellors, Lost Forest, SAP and all the 4.5 gang. 4.5 should be bigger than 4.0 if teams stay interested. I think this is a good thing.

    ReplyDelete
  73. There could be a lot of 4.5 teams next season, but I don't think the season will be any fun till the city playoffs.

Based on how the flights were put together last year, the top 2 teams were whipping up on the other teams and I can't of anyone thinking that was fun and competitive.

Given the wide skill disparity in 4.5 after the YE ratings, do you think the above situation will improve? It will probably take 2 years before the ratings and skill level to adjust. So I guess we all have to tough it out and endure it till then.

    ReplyDelete
  74. Tennis is not going to be fun this year. What fun is it going to be if every Thursday I'm getting my ass kicked by a bunch of 4.5's that actually belong in that level?

Does the USTA really think this is going to get more people to play? I will probably only play one or two leagues this year instead of every singles, doubles and mixed leagues like I normally would. Why should I have to waste money playing non-competitive tennis for a year just to get my ranking down to where it should be?

    ReplyDelete
  75. Maybe you should play to improve your game by taking advantage of playing against high level players.

    ReplyDelete
  76. To the 1:50 poster, the City Playoffs was very competitive besides the Hurricane Team in 4.5. It came down to Sunday to determine who got 2nd. In 4.0's there wasn't a dominant team besides SAP.

    ReplyDelete
  77. How was SAP dominant? They barely made it out of their pool. I thought the 4.0 playoffs were even at least for about 6 teams.

    ReplyDelete
  78. Well SAP was 13-7 in individual matches in the playoffs and didn't lose an overall match until they got to Sectionals.

    ReplyDelete
  79. Being on the team, SAP had a couple of close ones that came down to the 5th line that could have gone either way and a couple that were over with the first 3 lines.

I would not deem it domination in any fashion.

I would define domination by the wins that the Hurricane 4.5, 5.0 and Betsie's 4.5 team had at city.

    ReplyDelete
  80. SAP seemed to dominate in singles with Grego and Osorio

    ReplyDelete
  81. ...until they got to sectionals

    ReplyDelete
  82. the only 2 4.0 bump ups that will do well are: chambert and foster

    ReplyDelete
  83. I disagree. I think Bruce Inting and Jamie Robinson will also be very competitive in 4.5, as well as several others.

    ReplyDelete
  84. that's great! new faces to 4.5

    ReplyDelete
  85. The top 4.0s will have no problem playing and doing well in 4.5 tournaments and league. 4.5s tend to think a little to highly of themselves.

    ReplyDelete
  86. westside 4.5...you heard it hear firts...

    ReplyDelete
  87. Jesus I wish people would either spell check their own shit or use a browser that has spell check. Makes you look like an ignorant fool....

    ReplyDelete
  88. Westside WON't be a factor this summer. Losing Bradley put's them out of contention. When he lost the team lost. So with him gone they will struggle.

    ReplyDelete
  89. The 4.5 team to watch is Sienna Plantation. They made big strides last year and with Trevino back they'll be tough.

4.5 will be very tight this year. I think there will be a lot of competition for playoff spots and then in the playoffs there will be a lot of competition for the sectional spot(s).

    Should be a fun year.

    ReplyDelete
  90. whated too axe you a queston what are this spill check thing you talking aboat?

    ReplyDelete
  91. Sienna might be tough in 4.5 next year, unless Freeman gets his way. I know for a fact that he is trying to pilfer Trevino from the Sienna team as well as Scott Whitney from the 4.0 team.

Maybe I'm naive but is it that important to field a team that goes to nationals that you need to "steal" players from other teams? I could understand if someone approached Freeman about playing on his team but to actively recruit players from another team seems a bit overboard.

    ReplyDelete
  92. Happy Holidays everyone!

    ReplyDelete
  93. Fuck that - Merry Christmas. Take your PC shit elsewhere.

    ReplyDelete
  94. How unbelievably charming. And gracious too. What is wrong with you?

    ReplyDelete
  95. Freeman - don't you have things to do in DC?

    ReplyDelete
