Quick Update

The Hurricane 4.5 team took down Sugar Creek 4-1 tonight.  Odion Dibua beat Simon Jim in a tight and at times contentious match.  Ted Pumma waltzed past Samir Chiali.  David Herr made his league debut a successful one, teaming with Nick Hiemstra to take down solid veterans Burrmann and Day in three sets.  Omon Dibua and Ricardo Martinez took out Jason Cooney and new self-rate Luis Hernandez and David Lombardi and Wayne Morgan won their line very quickly and easily.

Ken Douds is doing everything in his power to improve his roster, and has made some really nice additions.  Assuming that neither team takes down the Hurricanes or stumbles against Sienna, Sugar Creek will have to sweep their remaining two matches against the Deucebags to make the City playoffs.

  1. Westside Black Sheep lost tonight 3-2. They lost 3 match tiebreaks..

  2. Wow...Black Sheep were shorthanded but that's a shocker. Scott Foster picked up a win at 2 singles, Bill Morris and Hung Do won at 3 dubs and Brian Goldberg and Thomas Tran-Park had the night's big win over Mike Hansen and Sean Lacy. Nice win for Freeman's JV squad.

  3. I am highly convinced that no-ad scoring is a horrible idea. Six 3-3 points tonight and only won 1 of them.

  4. Chris,

Man up dude. Life is not full of second chances!

  5. It makes a kick-ass return guy a little more valuable than he ordinarily would be as he can take all of the three-all returns.

  6. Yes, I knew I was going to get that. I just don't get why HTA does not embrace a "captains choice" philosophy based on facility capability.

By bringing everyone down to the lowest denominator based on what the city facilities can accommodate they make they make it more about luck on a given point than it would be if ad tennis were played...

  7. Sienna Overhitters RULE !!! we are the BEST !!!

  8. Duecebags beat Sienna tonight on the last match on the court. Line 2 doubles came down to a 3rd set tiebreaker, I think it was 11-9. Seinna dropped both singles then pulled out Lines 1 and 3 doubles. Great win by one of our 4.0 teams that we borrowed for Line 3!! Overall, a close one.

  9. I have been on teams where captains have mutually agreed to play ad. I have also had a duo on my teams that almost always asked their opponents if their match could be played with regular scoring when they took the court.

  10. Great effort Sienna 4.5!!!! You'll get there, you guys are doing everything right, it just takes some time.

  11. Deucebags line 3 4.5 lost to a Sienna 4.0 team? Was it a scrub team from the Deucebags? Can a 4.0 play in the 4.5?

    ReplyDelete
  12. Aadrian Hasker beat Juan Trevino pretty convincingly tonight, two and four. Nice win.

  13. Did Sienna 4.0 win?

  15. It appears that Sienna 4.5 CAN win doubles lines. Who played doubles for Sienna?

    ReplyDelete
  16. How did Costilla do? Off course Sienna can win doubles lines. They WON'T win any doubles lines against the Hurricanes though.

  17. There was an upset last night in 4.0 as Double Trouble took down the Rolido boys. Big serving newcomer Ed Galvez was paired with a 3.5 player and still managed to straight set Randy Lawton and Michael Martinez as Double Trouble swept the dubs.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Without Pio the rolido boys will need to work for 3 lines.

  19. Sienna 4.0 won last night 4-1. It was closer than they would have liked. Their line 1 singles guy lost his game when David told him to stop calling out the score on his serve. The poor guy was never the same after that. Talk about getting into his head.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Sienna 4.0-"Closer than they would've liked"-I guess only if they want to win every match 5-0 in all straight sets. After all, they won 4 matches in straights and split sets in the only match they lost.

  21. Plus, the captain has to qualify 50 guys for the playoffs...

    ReplyDelete
  22. 53, we just added 3 more players.

    ReplyDelete
  23. the number is now 52 ... After pulling off an upset victory in 4.5 last night , Ronnie no longer desires to play down to the 4.0 level

    ReplyDelete
  24. Good win Ronnie... Hope all is well. Tell Andrew and the family hello. Craig Bobo

  25. "Their line 1 singles guy lost his game when David told him to stop calling out the score on his serve". Help me out here, why would their line 1 singles guy feel obliged to honor that demand? Can his head be that weak?

    ReplyDelete
  26. Craig, great to hear from you... Andrew just left for Superchamps in Dallas. BTW, Andre joined our 4.5 team. We are having a blast with tennis in Sienna.

    ReplyDelete
  27. who is the best player on Sienna 4.5, is it Ronnie ?? is he that good ???

    ReplyDelete
  28. Yes, he is the best....

    ReplyDelete
  29. Andre costillo has 382 points in super champs and won the Woodlands junior open in doubled. I guess Sienna is this years bunch of big cheaters. Did he self rate wrong or was it the captain who signed him up?

    ReplyDelete
  30. A player like Andre will be allowed to win several matches before the top captains protest him causing several defaults. Sienna will learn the hard way.

    ReplyDelete
  31. People all over the state have started recruiting Super Champ Jrs for their teams. Dallas Rothwell has 2 top 50 Super 18 juniors. A junior like Costilla will lack experience to win in key matches.

    ReplyDelete
  32. If you think 320 points is a big deal in super champs you guys need to grow some balls because those kids wouldn't fair a chance in the adult 4.5 league. Give yourself a little more credit than that.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Ok 382 same difference

    ReplyDelete
  34. 382 doesn't even crack the top 100

    ReplyDelete
  35. People won't wait for someone to win and then protest. People will do the research mark down who is out of level or not following rules (blatantly) and then when it matters (city, sectionals) they will protest.

Right now I can guarantee there are more than 10 key players that have been identified through research and stupid shit like not joining HTA that will be protested when it counts.

The really militant people aren't just looking at Houston, but the top teams from Austin, SA and Dallas as well to get them once everyone gets to Dallas.

Does it look like Costilla violates anything on this page? I can't tell. From what I see it looks like you have to be in the Top 20 in Super Champs in order to require a higher than 4.5 rating?? Any more thoughts?

    ReplyDelete
  37. In addition, I don't know if he's played any college tennis or not but that would make a difference as well.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Similiar to the Donn Nguyen situation in 3.5 a while back in Dallas?

    ReplyDelete
  39. What Donn Nguyen situation? Does he have a history we should know about? Costilla looks legal to me. I'm more curious about the ten players on that guy's list. Care to name names???

    ReplyDelete
  40. Basically, the "Donn Nguyen situation" is that he signed up as a 3.5 player in his first year in the league. He actually was pretty much a beginner player playing with an antique racquet. Because he's an incredible athlete, got out and played a lot and bought a new racquet he improved a ton. By the time Sectionals came around he was a solid 4.0 player and he killed some people in Dallas and got himself bumped out.

    ReplyDelete
  41. if Donn was 3.5 and now he is 4.0 ... why is Donn playing 4.5 ? is he just curious and just want to have some fun ? too greedy ... it will be bad for his 4.5 team mate.
Maybe he thinks he is ready to play with the big boys. :-(

    ReplyDelete
  42. From a previous comment, it appears that a couple of the Sienna 4.0 guys are ready to play with the big boys as two 4.0s defeated the Duecebags at line 3. I wonder if it was a scrub Deucebag team? Or if the statement is even true as neither team has reported the score yet. Anyone know who played and what the score was?

    ReplyDelete
  43. Scores not reported within 48 hours can be ruled a double default. Hope they start enforcing that. Maybe someone should protest it.

    ReplyDelete
  44. are you serious, ronnie is not the best on Sienna 4.5, he is their mascot or pet ... amusing to have around. ... good 3.5 player.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Derrick and Bobby lost to Ronnie and ? 6-3, 6-3

    ReplyDelete
  46. Donn is an incredible athlete ??? he looks like he is about 12 yrs old, 120 lbs, hasn't reach puberty yet ... no power just quick kid.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Any Early Predictions in Hurricanes vs Sienna 4.5 Match-up?

    ReplyDelete
  48. 1. Trevino vs. Omon- Omon should win, but trevino might seek revenge since he lost badly to hasker last week.
    2. Pumma vs. Costilla- Costilla should win, cuz he's more talented and Pumma can't handle serve and volleys.
    3. Sienna will win one doubles match.

    overall, hurricanes win 3-2

    ReplyDelete
  49. -any early perdictions for blacksheeps vs crush?
    ball busters vs. lobsters?

    ReplyDelete
  50. Costilla? Are you guys joking? He is one of Bobo's ex juniors. He is to young still to be a threat in singles. The Hurricanes will be hoping he plays singles.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Donn has reached puberty, he has kids.

    ReplyDelete
  52. Thanks for the update Ronnie. Yes,I saw... -and I am glad Andre is playing for you guys. He needs more match play and tough match experience. He is playing at USTA Jr. Team Tennis Sectionals this weekend in New Braunfels on our Supers 18 Team. Tell Andrew and Nick, and all of the others down in SW H-town that I miss them. Good luck and I'll see you soon. Shoot the way 5.0 is shaping up to this year with all of the 5.5's who got bumped down, I'll be re-assembling a 4.5 Team again this time next year. All the Best... Craig Bobo

    ReplyDelete
  53. Hey guys... I started Andre at the age of 12 at Quail Valley. I am very proud of how far he has come. He has become a nice player and has some big shots, but most juniors mental toughness is not quite there yet. Andre is still a few years away from his greatest potential. Ted Pumma... is extremely match tough. If Andre can stay focused the whole match and he stays aggressive he might have a shot... Otherwise, Ted is too tough. It will be like the Nadal-Djokovic match. The big shots will earn some points, but mental toughness usually wins out. Craig Bobo

    ReplyDelete
  54. Bobo, why are you insulting a long time league player like Ted? You say Andre is not ready as a player, then say Andre has a chance to beat Ted. Ted is one of the better league singles players in Houston. It is funny how you say Andre is playing for Sectionals on a Super 18 team, yet he is playing 4.5 adult league. Following in his coach's footsteps I guess! If you are not cheating, You are not trying.

    ReplyDelete
  55. I don't think Craig was insulting Ted at all. If I were writing up a list of cheaters in Houston League tennis Craig Bobo's name would not be on the list. In general I think the cheating is way down in recent years...perhaps the league blogs in Dallas, Houston and Austin have helped curtail some stuff due to fear of public notice/comments. I don't see how Costilla playing for Sienna constitutes cheating, but perhaps I'm misinformed on the rules????

  57. There is nothing illegal about a superchamp self-rating at 4.5. Unless Andre has committed to playing college tennis at DI (or DII or DIII top ranked team), was ranked top 150 nationally or top 20 in Texas then he accurately self-rated.
