AWOL

I have been missing in action for a while now.  Just started looking at some of the results from HTA season and tournaments...nothing earth shattering, but some interesting results for sure.  This weekend will start to shed some light on the upcoming season with a major zone and the tri-level sectionals taking place.

I just heard a rumor that Jimmy Kilshaw will be stepping down as the Kingwood captain this year. I'm not sure how true it is, but Jimmy will be missed.  Hai Vu and Chantz Chanthanalay are rumored to be his replacement.  I'm sure they will do a great job, but it will surely be tough to match the success that Jimmy's teams have had over the last few years.

  1. I'm sure if it is true that Jimmy is stepping down then that will shake things up in Houston. With Jimmy losing Wright/Valentine and Armstrong/Hurlbert its hard to find replacements for such strong doubles talent. They have been fortunate to do as well as they have but its always tough to keep rebuilding teams year after year. Nontheless Kilshaw has always maintained a way of getting both a 4.5 and 4.5 senior team to Sectionals which is alot to be said for him.

Hai Vu has had experience being a Captain but can he really lead the Crush to Sectionals Sunday? Unlikely IMO.

San Antonio has started there league and Torres has reassembled his All Star Squad. I guess all the losing in tournaments and League Play has paid off for them. Can Anyone Beat them?

  2. Cheaters like Torres, Benzon and Freemen always prosper.

  3. So who will be the dominant league team in Houston in 4.5 this year. Can anyone stop Team Torres this year?

  4. It will be a down year for Houston this year at all levels accept maybe 5.0. Branch and Davis will challenge Torres. NObody in Houston capable of being at that level.

  5. Wow, again with these absolute statements. "Nobody in Houston is capable of being at that level." You don't even know who the teams are going to be in Houston this year, let alone the players (including new ones) on those teams. It's just hilarious to hear such firm predictions without ANY of the facts.

All we know for sure at this point is the San Antonio will send a contender to Dallas. We'll see about the rest.

  6. A 4.5 All-Star team from Houston could not hang with the top team from SA, Austin and Dallas.

  7. Of course not. That must be why North Houston faced Houston in the finals in Dallas just last year. Again with the absolutes with no idea what Houston teams are putting out there yet. Thanks for the insight.

  8. I will say that Austin's Davis will most likely have a very competitive team as always. Dallas's Branch may too be a strong contender but when is the last time Dallas has got to a Sectionals Final in 4.5? Maybe this will be there year.
San Antonio will most likely wait til the very end to add there RINGERS Morgan/Strand. If they do add these players it is highly unlikely anyone can stop them. As much as Torres cheats he knows how to work the system in his favor.

As for Houston it is very likely they will have a strong contention. The only thing in question is who will lead the Team.Houston has been in the Final Four the last 4 years and its hard to assume things will change this year.

  9. All the good players in Houston were bumped up. I don't see a strong captain out there if Benzon, Kilshaw, Dwyer and Freeman are all not having teams. The others are just amateurs.

  10. Deucebags are going to be the team to Beat. Alain Tran is recruiting like crazy and the Dugas Brothers will show true domination in 4.5 Doubles in Summer League.

  11. As opposed to pros? We are talking about USTA league here, right?

Just because Kilshaw steps down as captain doesn't mean Kingwood doesn't put out a strong team this year. Also, teams like Copperfield and Westside from last year had good teams. Since they can't recruit outside their clubs, it makes it more difficult but they may be strong again this year. With a lot of good players bumped up, we'll have to see if any new players arrive on the Houston scene.

  12. I was just looking at that San Antonio team roster, and most of them appear to be ghosts as far as a USTA record is concerned. Avila, Torres, Vasquez, and Cambon are known but the rest have almost no record to see.
You had better bring all your sticks and a killer attitude when you line up against them.

  13. Deucebags even being mentioned as a contender proves my point. Houston has no talent left. Copperfield lost their only good player and Westside has benifited from playing against zero competition in the regular season. They lose in playoffs every year even though every one takes them lightly.

  14. Funny thing about San Antonio is that there Ghosts are former 5.5 players being told to control outcome of matches. They know when to turn it on and come summer time at Sectionals believe me they will bring an All Star Squad. Torres,Vasquez,Cambon,Deleon,Deleon all were on 2006 National Championship Team. They plan on repeating.

  15. GAY & HAPPY in Austin Texas,

I have played against Alan Torrez severeal times. He always plays with a good to great partner. How does he do it being such a cheat?!?!? I have read and heard lots of things about Alan Torrez and all have been from people I like or have also played against. I have nothing bad to say about Alan only this when I saw him play the tournament in San Antonio a few weeks back the MABRY that he won. It was like a totally different person !!!!! He was so intense & was just hitting the ball SO FEAKING GOOD .... I mean how is he a 4.5 player. I know he used to play 5.0 & Open doubles with a real good player named Otis Sadler (who is a FREAKING GREAT PLAYER & sexy too)butmy gosh it was like watching an open player He served great he was returning great he was just great ... So maybe all the sand bagging story are true ... HOW CAN ALAN possible have fun playing with people who are not as good as he is ?!?!?!

Gay & Happy in Austin Texas :p

  16. "A man of his word", I remember hearing a rumor that Vincent G. from Allan torreses 4.5 team in san antonio was done playing league. So back here at home I spoke to Mike, Vincents brother and he said "Vince was hurting phisically and was not enjoying league play in San Antonio, when I heard that I figured the rumors where true, that Vincent G. was not going to play league. Then to my surprise I glanced at the San Antonio 4.5 league and saw that Vincent G. was indeed playing league and as a surprise was not playing with his old Torrez team. So I guess Allans 4.5 team loaded with ringers no longer could use a dominant doubles player like Vincent. I guess Vincent G. and his word mean nothing and are worthless!!

  17. Tim Green and Red benzon are playing on the san antonio team this year. Got this from a reliable source....

    ReplyDelete
  18. Neither one of those 2 could make that San Antonio Squad. So tell your reliable source to keep on being UNRELIABLE with his information.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Sure they could. Red and Tim are as good as the Deleons and also as good as Torres/Vazquez. The problem though is that Red was bumped to 5.0.

  20. Lets just face the Facts that San Antonio is making a run at yet another tainted National Championship. Kudos to Torrez for putting once again a illegal team testing the USTA's system.

  21. If Jimmy is indeed dteping down from the Captain spot he will be missed greatly. He is always a competitor and always enjoyed the tennis and his team. I hope it is a temporary step down.

To the talk about me playing for San Antonio...you are crazy. I never even thought about that. I did however think of playing here in Houston again. We will see.

  22. It will be a loss for Houston with Jimmy K and Tim G no longer as active captains. They made sure that Houston competed at Sectionals for so long. To bad they never joined teams together.

    ReplyDelete
  23. I wouldn't be surprised to see both Kilshaw and Green captain 4.5 teams this year.

  25. Keep an eye on the Ausin league. You may see something you did not or would not expect.

  26. After reviewing the people that have signed up for the Austin 4.5 league thus far, I believe your "true 4.5" National bound team is being created.

  27. We see Juan and Dobbs and some other pretty good players. What are we missing.?????
