Tennis LIfe

Thanks to Granger Huntress for the mention he gave to the league tennis blogs in Houston, Austin and Dallas in the latest issue of Tennis Life magazine.

  1. That's how I found this site. It doesn't seem to be too active... I guess it picks up in the spring?

    ReplyDelete
  2. It's not too active, because this is the worst of the three blogs.

    ReplyDelete
  3. No, its not active because nobody cares about the HTA doubles season because there is nothing on the line. It will be very active once we get closer to the USTA season.

That being said, the Austin blog is the better overall site.

  4. if you want an active blog, you can check out the Houston tennis tournament blog (look the site up on google)

beware though. some of the chat in that blog gets pretty offensive sometimes.

  5. I rate them:

    DAllas blog: Most active commenting

Houston blog: Hurt by the inactive offseason

Austin blog: Broadest coverage but not very interactive

Houston tourney blog: Lively but out of control at times.

They're all worth checking out though.

  6. OK, let's get some relevant talk going.

With so many of the top players getting bumped to 5.0, who are the 4.5 teams most likely to contend for the Houston title this year in USTA play?

    ReplyDelete
  7. Could someone summarize some of the top players that got bumped up or down in the different divisions?

    ReplyDelete
  8. NOBODY got bumped down, with a few minor exceptions.

As for 4.5 next year, there's little reason to think things will be different. Kingwood will be the team to beat, but don't be surprised if another team materializes. A lot of the talent from the NOHO Teague/Bobo team was bumped up, but those that remain 4.5 may end up dispersed. Will Jason Freeman's team return with his absence? The word on the street is that Alain Tran is assembling an improved team. The chances of the Mob Squad returning are small...will any of their significant players push any teams over the edge? Still a lot of questions to be answered.

  9. Who does Kingwood have left that would make them the team to beat?

    ReplyDelete
  10. rumor has it that Rice might sponsor anymore leagues. there's plenty of good players that might need a new team.

  11. I've only read a little on this blog but it seems to be only about men's tennis in Houston. Is that the intent? What about women's tennis?

    ReplyDelete
  12. Well if more women would join the blog then there might be more topics on women's tennis. The latest women's discussion was under the tri-level thread but you'd be right that this is mostly about men's tennis.

    ReplyDelete
  13. I would love for there to be more of a women's element to the blog, but unfortunately I know little about women. LOL Seriously, if Betsie or anyone else would like to contribute a weekly section on the women's league during the season and occasional blurbs in the off-season I'd be all in favor of it.

  14. Now that made me laugh out loud.

    ReplyDelete
  15. People forget that copperfield and westside were semi-finalists in city last year and other that Kudrick, nobody got bumped up to 5.0. Surely kingwood will be good as usual but I think there will be plenty of competition this year from the other teams.

  16. the stronger singles players for the 2009 4.5 summer league will have to be:
    - h. vu
    - c. hunckler
    - a. hasker
    - a. bergmann
    - q. bui
    - s. lacy
    - m. fonseca
    - h. alzate
    - m. morales
    - s. phan

    ReplyDelete
  17. Looks like the two top singles player going into the summer league might have to be hasker and bui. hasker went to a tie-breaker against texas's top open player, brian wooten. bui won the fall fest. and also went undefeated in the fall singles league. as for the rest of guys on the list, some are playing only doubles and the rest might be taking a break from usta action.

    ReplyDelete
  18. the list above is a good start. while bui and hasker are very good, you can't really go on fall leagues and tourney results in predicting summer league b/c many of the good player don't participate in those.

I know the players on the list above had good records but has anyone seen them all play? some of them were new last year. I assume they are all baseline grinders in their 20's since that is the trend. it's getting to where us old guys can't compete in singles anymore

    ReplyDelete
  19. I have seen most of them play.

vu: 3.5 serve, good volleys, can not come over backhand, can hit good forehand

hunkler: good backhand, average serve hugs baseline to make up for lack of mobility.

hasker: best game on the list if his head does not get in the way. decent lefty serve and solid on ground

bergmann: decent lefty baseline basher. can be frustrated.

bui: all those muscles don't mean he's got power. consistent steady player with no weapons.

lacy: great serve and volley game. seems like he'd be better in doubles with lake of groundies and fitness

alzate: ugly looking game that is surprisingly effective

morales: improved from years ago. very loopy strokes.

phan: nice baseline game with dangerous forehand. if the rust comes off he could be the best on the list.

james bui might be better than quack. tim green probably as good as anyone on this list.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Some names left off: Dibua, Dibua

    ReplyDelete
  21. the Dibua brothers. they seem to be injured most of the time and playing more dubs.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Odion is back to 4.5. he's going to be a force to deal with.

    ReplyDelete
  23. hunckler and hasker are the top dawgs on that list. who thinks james is better then quack. james lost to knutson 6-4,6-4, while quack beat him 6-2,6-0. green and odion being bumped down to 4.5 will keep the summer league very interesting.

    ReplyDelete
  24. HELLO Did Someone Leave out Tim Green??? He only won a couple of Major Zones but he would beat Bui and give Hasker a run for his money.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Green is a top 4.5, but i just looked at his results and he only beats mid-level 4.5 players. not too impressive. Hasker usually plays open level and have beaten some good players.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Agreed. What about Green vs. Bui ??

    ReplyDelete
  27. Quack was losing matches in the 4.0 league 2 or 3 years ago. Please.

    ReplyDelete
  28. that was 2-3 years ago, he would definitely lose to green. but now i don't see that happening. look at green's current match against morton. green went to the 3rd set, while bui beat morton easily. i agree that green has better looking strokes, but bui has a better game. also bui does not have any weapons, but he does not have any weaknesses either. bui over green 6-4, 6-2.

    ReplyDelete
  29. green does not play alot of league and bui does play alot of tourneys. i doubt they'll get to play each other. but it will be interesting to see who wins.

    ReplyDelete
  30. quach is not good enough to play singles for a decent league team. tim is.

    ReplyDelete
  31. someone needs set up a match between the two. the underdog would be bui.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Bui wouldn't be able to pass Green with his backhand.

    ReplyDelete
  33. oops, change my mind. looks like tim has been beating the same 4 people over and over. not impressive.

    ReplyDelete
  34. I thought Tim Green only plays doubles when he plays league? He may be good at singles but is much better than that in doubles. I have played him in doubles and he took over the match everytime a set got close. If he ever gets a good doubles partner they will take the place of a team like Hurlbert/Armstrong.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Tim is one of if not the best doubles player in the Houston area with a 4.5 rating. He is attacked in the blog because he is so competitive, but you have to also respect that. He would be the first to admit that he is no sure win in singles league play. That is why he almost always plays doubles in league. Those who have played against him will give him respect in singles but realize he is a much better doubles player.

    ReplyDelete
  36. true to that. his doubles record looks very good.

    ReplyDelete
  37. What about that Snapper Head called Reader????

    ReplyDelete
  38. what's going to happen with last year's met hurricanes team? With Freeman gone, does Hunkler carry it on as captain or does the team break up and spread around? Are there any teams in 4.5 this year that will enter the season stacked like Met and Kingwood did last year? Sleeper teams?

Lots of questions but the blog has been boring so maybe this will give us something to talk about.

    ReplyDelete
  39. hunckler will probably take over the met. kingwood will always be stacked. i don't see anyone beating kingwood this year.

    ReplyDelete
  40. I don't understand how you can say that nobody will beat Kingwood this year when you don't even know who the other teams are going to be.

A couple teams were close last year and they may be adding talent. There may be new teams as well. I'm sure Kingwood will have a good team as usual but maybe we should see who the others are before we declare the winner. Just a thought.

    ReplyDelete
  41. That is true. With Bobo moving to Kingwood, maybe he can get bumped back down to 4.5 for next year and then what will happen to the Kingwood team. We have seen how clutch he can be. Maybe BoBo can replace Steve Valentine on the Kingwood team the way he did at the Athletic Club.

    ReplyDelete
  42. As a member of Kingwood I do not want to see Bobo added to the team if he ran off Valentine. Kingwood is about loyalty. And why does Bobo seem to move from club to club so much?

    ReplyDelete
  43. Bobo's always on Red's team. No one wants any part of that slime ball Red

    ReplyDelete
  44. Kingwood Crush is not going to be as strong as they used to. And Bobo is not a 4.5 anymore to the last poster. San Antonio is the 4.5 team to Beat this Year.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Does anyone have any comments or predictions about the spring HTA league? In the 4.5 flights, the Lost Forest Fires, WSTC - No Way Out, and the MPTC - Deucebags are the only undefeated teams so far. Kingwood seems to have started slow having won only 1 of 3 matches thus far.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Not sure about division 1. Lost Forest probably won't finish first though. I figure Kingwood and Westside will get over the slow starts and compete with Copperfield for the "title." Division II is pretty weak overall. Anyone else ready to get this stuff over with and move on to USTA play?

Greg- I understand that you aren't into HTA stuff (can't blame you)but you do run the Houston League Blog. Come up with something to stir things up every once in a while. We're all getting bored.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Neither of us have posted anything on this blog. All of the posers who are posting as Trey or Derrick need to get a life.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Does anyone know of a good tennis retreat? I was going to go to John Newcomb, but for 2 people it will end up costing $800 for 2 days!

    Any other locations worth trying?

    ReplyDelete
  49. HTA Spring League is boring because nothing's at stake. They need to give the winner of the Spring HTA league a wild card into summer playoffs like they do in Dallas. That IMO opinion would make teams play harder.

  51. T Bar M in New Braunfels is pretty nice, and it's not too far to drive. I'm not sure how expensive it is. I stayed at a friend of mine's condo for the weekend for free.
