Ratings

The ratings for 2009 should be out either today or tomorrow. Will post an update when I hear something.

  1. Thanks for the note Greg.

Should be interesting to see who gets bumped after tanking all Fall...

  2. Those players who tanked in the fall league hoping it would help them with these ratings are in for a rude awakening. Those results are considered part of the 2009 season.

  3. Then how does it work?

I thought Fall league and tournament results following the mid-year rankings being published are what are used to determine EOY rankings?

What is the purpose of mid-year then?

  4. Yeah, HH - who did you hear that from? That is something new. And at what point do the fall results apply towards 2009?

  5. If you go on tennis link and look at the results from the fall league you'll notice that they're included in the 2009 season. That has always been the case in Houston, perhaps because the season ends too late to be included in the 2008 calculations. Doing it this way has prevented some shady captains from putting ringers into the fall league to get computer ratings for the following season.

The midyear ratings are fairly useless for houstonians. Dallas uses them for their fall league, which is much more competitive and allows teams to qualify for the playoffs in the "summer league" of the following year.

  6. so fall tournaments still count towards 2008 ratings, but HTA Fall league results do not.

  7. The real question in this subjective system is I wonder since Tosha is leaving this function that she will pardon a bunch of offenders and let them stay where they are.

Kind of like when the outgoing president pardons all kinds of criminals in the midnight hour on his way out the door.

That would be awesome. Imagine having Red, Bobo and company playing 4.0 or 3.5 even....

For all of you all who want to make a difference and you have the right skill set, you can apply for the position and influence Texas based USTA leagues for the next few years....

  8. I heard Red is taking that position over.

    ReplyDelete
  9. I would be interested in that position but I believe it requires you to work in Austin.

    ReplyDelete
  10. Why would you have to work in Austin?

We have high speed internet now. Most of that job seems to be email, web and con-call based.

  11. Problem with the Asst. position is you can't play League and have to be very impartial towards your decision making in certain situations. When the Ratings come out it will be to many a surprise that you are now not allowed to Appeal your rating down if you become a Benchmark rated player. So for those of you who participated at Sectionals/Nationals be prepared for a rude awakening.

  12. Interesting Reading on Dallas Tennis Blog.

    ReplyDelete
  13. I thought it was always that way. Benchmark players cannot appeal except for injury.

  14. actually a "B" will come in to platy for those who played a match at the City Level Championships as as well. Just FYI

  15. Yup - looks like the ratings are trickling in. For those of you with nothing better to do at work today. You can watch it like the stock market. Sometimes good news some times not so good.

  18. Copperfield has lost there 4.5 Ringer Kudrick he is now a 5.0 BENCHMARK.

  19. How funny.

That guys was toying with people at 4.5.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Congrats to Chris Towle on being a Benchmark 4.5 now.

Now is there really that much difference between Chris and John K. No, I didn't so.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Towle promptly appealed and is back where he belongs.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Tim Green back to 4.5 with a Tournament Rating. Throw him a bone that's worse than getting a Mxd Rating. Let the 4.5 Competition begin once again.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Where/How do you appeal?

Chris: Everyone knows you are every bit as good as Kudrick so suck it up and play. :)

  24. I hear Towle is making some noise on the Dallas Blog. He must be taking over one of Freeman's Teams. He learned from the Best I'd have to say.

  25. I was just asking a question on the DAL blog.

Don't get the cart in front of the horse. I was mainly asking for personal reasons.

My wife was kind of pissed I got bumped.

Freeman needs to bequeath his dynasty to someone. I think the quality 4.5 guys will get snatched up by some of the other teams and I don't know how many are left at 4.0.

What is going to be funny is when you see the Mid-Atlantic Hurricanes at nationals in 2010.....

  26. Interestingly enough its nice to see how MRS.Hollis has once again managed to get 3 5.5 players bumped down in a matter of 1 year.Rudich,Ruedalflores,Mccdougall. All these players now have 4.5 computer ratings. Better hang it up 4.5 ladies. Hollis will be at Nationals with her newly acquired ringers. Way to go Betsie!!

  27. Henry Li back to 4.5.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Gary Armstrong and Glenn Wright are now 5.0

    ReplyDelete
  29. how come not all the ratings have 12/31/2008 next to them. What does that mean.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Not all of the new ratings are "out" yet.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Red Benzon has FINALLY been bumped up to a 5.0 rating and he CAN'T appeal it!!! Justice has been served.

    ReplyDelete
  32. He'll be down on his knees with his mouth wide open, and he will be back at 4.5 in a week.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Funny how the computer has generated its calculations. Nonetheless Houston should fair very well in League this upcoming summer.

    ReplyDelete
  34. The word coming out of Austin is that our favorite player, Chad Case, is back at 4.5 along with Bo Bowman. Add in Steve Creel and they will be pretty strong again. The wild card team that had Marcos Valdez lost him to 5.0.

    ReplyDelete
  35. With Kingwood and Bobo/Teague's 4.5 teams doing so well this year, their high ratings have filtered down to the rest of the Houston 4.5 players. I quickly glanced at the list of 4.0 players and found only ONE bump-down (J.J. Deleon). I must have missed several (please point them out if you see any). With so few former 4.5's dropping to 4.0 in Houston combined with the absence of Jason Freeman, I suspect 2009 will be a very down year for the 4.0 level in Houston.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Chad Case isn't just Houston's favorite player, he's everyone's favorite player. He'll be back next year with Bo Bowman for Austin Wild, but I don't think Steve Creel will join them, but the jury's still out on that one. Mike Davis did lose his rock in Eric Strawbridge and I suspect he'll lose a couple of others for various reasons, but he's still the favorite to carry Austin, but he won't have the dominant team he had in 2006. With Red gone and Rusty losing a couple of guys it'll be interesting next year.

  37. Does anyone know if the San Antonio Team will be as strong as everyone says they are supposedly? Looking at the ratings Reid Strand got a 4.5 Computer Rating. He was a topic in a previous post last year but now to see him as a 4.5 makes things interesting for this upcoming year in league tennis.

    ReplyDelete
  38. wow so TTA basically said FU to the rating system and are going to let a young D1 player as well as former top junior player play at 4.5.
I guess cheating and tanking do pay.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Yeah, Alan Torres makes a mockery of the rating system. Tosha Smith just turns a blind eye. How she got promoted is anybody's guess. Strand played big time college tennis a few years ago and tanked his way into the 4.5 division.
