Ratings Junkie

Ok, I admit it. I'm a numbers guy, a statistics guy, the type of guy who could tell you how many homers Harmon Killebrew or Carl Yastrzemski had. So I was kind of excited when I came across a thread on the tennis warehouse message boards that explained a "trick" to finding out your exact rating.

As you may or may not know, a 4.5 player has a rating that is anywhere from 4.01 to 4.50. Hopefully you can do the math to figure out where a 3.5, 4.0 or a 5.0 player's rating falls. Anyway, somebody was able to hack a way to find out your correct rating. It involves protesting your rating online and having the USTA email you the results. If you open the email via Outlook, you can then "View Source" on the email contents and embedded in the code is a line that says "ntrp-rating=" followed by your exact numerical rating. This kind of information could be useful to someone like Tim Green or any other player who has been "bumped down" via tournament results, as it would be useful to know how close he is to the 5.0 division and whether he should be careful with his results to avoid "three striking". (The word on the street is that players who recieved a rating via league play (except for mixed exclusive ratings) will not be in danger of "three striking" this year)

Anyway, I'm sure this loophole will be corrected posthaste, but those of you who are curious about your rating may want to try it. By the way, mine came back as a 3.95.

  1. How do you get the email? When I attempt to appeal my rating online it doesn't send me one. This is very interesting information though. I'm surprised I didn't see it myself on the TW forums.

  2. I got the email now but i'm looking at the source and don't see where my exact NTRP is. Are you a benchmark by any chance?

  3. Greg--will this work in Lotus Notes as well?

  4. I think they fixed it because i sent it through 3 email addresses and the ntrp_rating= is not there in the source code.

  5. Dwyer will be tanking quite a few matches this year guaranteed. he admitted as much by saying how close he is to being 4.5. Turpen is a former ranked junior player who was beating up on old men in 3.5. What a tool.

  6. Michael...did you have the email sent to an email account which uses outlook (e.g. a work email account)? I was unable to see the information via hotmail, though others on the message board reported being able to do so.

And no, I will not be tanking any matches this season. You may notice that I won my match at Sectionals last year 6-0, 6-0. If I were trying to protect my rating, surely I would have dropped some games in that match, no??? I'd like to be rated 4.5 again, unfortunately my tennis skills are not currently at that level.

Turpen: not sure about Lotus Notes. I didn't do any experimenting, just followed the directions of the tennis warehouse thread.

  7. I receive my email through outlook but it looks like others on the board after a certain are unable to view the rating. Can you try it again to see if you can still view it through a new email?

  8. it is fixed now apparently. I just tried and the phrase is no longer in the code. So USTA finally fixed the problem.

  9. HTownHacker so when you protest you will be moved up to 4.5. You are within the .05 range.
