4.5 Nationals

Sorry for the prolonged absence.  To be honest, I lose all interest in league tennis after the season is over.  I rarely play HTA stuff any more.  I would prefer that Houston did things like Dallas does: the Dallas fall league winner gains an automatic berth in the summer league playoffs, making the fall league matches meaningful.   I personally can get good matches playing with friends and prefer the flexibility of playing when my schedule allows since the HTA matches are really no more meaningful or intense than my "friendly" matches.

Anyway, Craig Bobo's Noho team has arrived in Tuscon and has what looks to be a favorable bracket, being placed with the champions from the Caribbean, Pacific Northwest and Midwest sections.  From what I understand, nearly everyone of importance (other than Antoine Ford) has made the trip to Arizona.   I will post updates when possible if I can get to a computer this weekend at Combo Sectionals.

  1. Team BOBO lost to Caribbean San Juan this afternoon 3-2. Heim and Wanja won the singles at #1 and #2.While the doubles teams of Teague/Deluca Bobo/Whitsett and Huffman/Ballesteros got swept without any team winning a set. They play Pacific Northwest in the evening match.

  2. Team Bobo won its 2nd match 4-1 against Pacific Northwest but Caribbean looks like they will win the bracket. Tough luck for NOHO. Good Luck to the Houston Combo Teams Tomorrow.

  3. Team Bobo wonits last match against Midwest 3-2 but Caribbean had already clinched birth to Semis before they had finished.

Congrats to 8.5 combo team for advancing in its 1st round match 3-0 at combo sectionals. They are currently playing there 2nd match.

  4. Congrats to Freemans 8.5 Combo Team for placing 2nd in combo sectionals this past weekend. Great job guys.

As far as Bobo's 4.5 Team what a disappointing year after having 2 powerhouses wanja/heim going undefeated in Sectionals and Nationals in singles they somehow still managed to drop the ball. bobo/whitsett managed to be beatable after all not being able to close out there 1st match against Caribbean team being up 5-2 in both 1st and 2nd sets and managing to lose both in Tieabreakers. It will definitely leave a bad taste in Team NOHO's thoughts. At Least the Southern guys next door won.

  5. Red must be mad that LA was able to keep their ringers and run through Nationals on their 2 Singles Horses.

  6. This blog is not as fun without Green and Hollis. Where have those two long time captains been?

Has Bobo pushed Green out and taken over his old team? Several players from Bobo's team were on Green's Nationals team a few years ago.

Do Red and Green no longer get along?

    ReplyDelete
  7. They are playing doubles together next weekend in Austin so I think they get along just fine. Green will be back in the 4.5 picture in 2009 and there is no doubt he and Red will have the team to beat in 4.5.

The big question will be whether or not Red jumps on board the San Antonio team next summer and how that team affects Houston 4.5 league tennis.

  8. Just want to let everyone know that I am going to KICK some ass. You guys have seen nothing yet. I'm basicallly undefeated, and the only times I've lost were due to cheaters. Any everyone knows this. I am a TENNIS GOD, and everyone will bow down before me!!!!!!! Just a warning,, so go by some knee pads, as you will be on your knees alot this year. You know this to be true!

    God of Tennis Out!

  9. Everyone knows Benzon and Torres are attached at the hip. Benzon's address has probably already changed to his summer home in San Antonio.

  10. Don't under estimate the team of Sarosh and Saroach.

He is probably the best doubles team around. He just doesn't get enough credit.

  11. benson and torres are 2 overweight pumpkins. they are at the buffet table putting Cici's out of business. they will not be a factor in league this coming year especially if mean green comes back to the 4.5 mix. Plus hasn't anybody heard sar oach is back and will be carrying freemans hurricanes to the promise land of 4.5 nationals. e nuff said

  12. I saw Betsie at WTT last weekend and she will definitely have her 4.5 team back next summer. Looking at who is still 4.5 rated from her 2007 team she'll be a favorite to go to Nationals for the 3rd consecutive time(not counting off years). She'll also add Emma McDougal from SHSU.

  13. Interesting News about Hollis putting another Nationals Bound team together. Does that surprise anybody? She is up to her tricks again of recruiting. I mean come on Emma MCdougall played # 1 for Sam Houston State University which is a Division 1 school. Somehow under the guidance of Hollis and some HTA matchplay she has gotten a 4.5 mid year rating.

I know Sam Houston is no top ranked D1 college but for Mcdougall to be a 4.5 Hollis is making a mockery of the USTA League. Hopefully the Texas Section looks into this.

    ReplyDelete
  14. ck out Mcdougall on collegetennisonline.com I guess hollis doesnt believe that a D1 should abide by the rules.

    ReplyDelete
  15. League is for losers. i am a 2.5 rated college player.

    ReplyDelete
  16. can you blame her for taking the Midland Approach on going to Nationals by using current and recent D1 College grads.
Until TTA and the USTA grows a set and enforces their own rules, including giving retroactive DQ's nothing will change.
You will con't to get your Morgan, Broach, Wanja, Gonzales, Bui, etc... playing because they lie on self-rates and play a mixed doubles league or what not to get a rating then decide to play only when the chips are down.

    ReplyDelete
  17. you cant blame her for taking the midland approach. I'm sure that Hollis will be at Nationals in 09 with her team and we will be cking out how illegal her team really is come summer league. I was just merely pointing out that she knows how to work the system as well as anybody in the league.

    ReplyDelete
  18. what's the difference between Emma playing 4.5 than Phil Palmer at 4.5this summer? She was a Fed Cup player. Just because that team didn't make it to Nationals, no one says anything.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Agree with previous post: Allison Lui, Kim Schroeder, Carol St Claire, Mindy Voyles, Tiffany Burris, Adria Conklin

To name a few - all of these players (and probably are more) played 4.5 league last summer. All of these players played Div 1 college tennis. None of these players are or will be on Holli's 4.5 team next summer. Why doesn't anyone complain about them?

    ReplyDelete
  20. So, what 4.5 captain out there would not add Emma to their team if she wasn't on a team?

    ReplyDelete
  21. The point that I'm trying to make is Hollis knows how to work the NTRP system. Yes Mcdougall self rated correctly as a 5.5 but she then played HTA league on Hollis's team and played some close matches with some 4.5's women then in turn generated a Mid Year 4.5 computer rating. Everyone knows that the computer rating system can be manipulated to get players a rating they want. Mcdougall is not at fault it is Hollis setting her team up for Nationals. She will have a unbeatable team this year GUARANTEED !!

    ReplyDelete
  22. Sounds like sour grapes more than anything. So you fault Hollis for getting good players on her team. So what. All the other captains out there are just jeolous because they didn't get her first.

So, what, you're suggesting that somehow Hollis is able to manipulate the scores of matches, the opponents, partners, and opposing captains so that Emma would have a 4.5 mid-year rating. To imply that would mean that everyone listed above is in collusion to cheat the system. To say that would mean that Emma, and/or all of her opponents, and/or al her partners, and/or all opposing captains are cheaters. That, or Hollis hacks the USTA computer system.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Emma joins a 5.0 HTA Tennis Team - legitimate. Emma self rates a 5.5 player - legitimate. Plays an entire season and sits out the summer because she's a 5.5 player - legitimate. The mid-year ratings come out and because she loses and has competitive matches with players such as Emily Schaefer, Allison Lui, Maria Taylor, Jan Mauldin... she gets mid-year rated 4.5. What's the crime in that? She didn't blow anyone off the court. This blog thinks that anyone who is "perceived" to be out of level are cheaters because, after all, it can't just be the captains that are crooked. The players would have to agree to tanking matches and/or games.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Okay so what the previous poster is saying is Mcdougall is a legitimate 4.5 player after recently graduating in 2006 playing #1 at a D1 school Sam Houston State . The previous poster is also saying that Mcdougall has somehow become a 4.5 player all of a sudden. Come on so Mcdougall has got her 4.5 rating because she played some doubles HTA matches BUT I don't buy it at all. Mcdougall could wipe the floor with any women in the 4.5 single ranks in Houston easily. Mcdougall may be a 4.5 doubles player but at very Least a 5.0 singles player. So what if she self rated correctly and played some competitive HTA matches those HTA matches are social tennis matches which are meaningless other than you can get a towel or a mug to take home at the end of the season. It won't matter though because regardless of what is said Hollis will have a STACKED TEAM that will DOMINATE the upcoming Summer League with Mcdougall playing singles if she gets her way. Although she may be in for a surprise in a couple of weeks when the year end ratings come out. She'll be losing some players!!

    ReplyDelete
  25. wow some of you guys are just funny off the rocker, if Emma is such a bad doubles player, then how the hell did she make all-conference in 2006 in doubles???
The teams in the Southland are no slouches.
I guess it does help her case since Tosha Smith did beat her in doubles.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Hey AR Hacker what are your thoughts on this position? Should Mcdougall be an eligible 4.5 player or do you think the computer has been worked over a little?

    H Town Tennis

    ReplyDelete
  27. Computer worked over? What are you F'ing stupid. Who do you think is working over the computer?

    ReplyDelete
  28. Must have hit a nerve to the last poster. What I meant to say is that the computer has allowed another recent D-1 Grad player do drop from 5.5 to the 4.5 Ranks because of some close doubles matches. To the last poster you must be a rookie league player sorry. If you don't know the computer can be manipulated you don't know squat!!

    ReplyDelete
  29. So you're suggesting that Emma tanked matches or games to make her scores competitive. You're pathetic. You must be a cheater and a liar yourself to suggest that anytime the computer underrates a player it's always because the player is being deceitful. Anyone can have a bad day and anyone can play against players who have good days. There's also the possibility that your partner is not playing well that day. You're a purist. Quit thinking the worse of people.

    ReplyDelete
  30. No, I'm not a rookie poster. I'm just tired of seeing all of the character assasination on this board. So much insecurity out there. I don't know Emma for squat but unless you know her or anyone else on this board that has been unfairly accused of cheating the system - shut the F up.

    ReplyDelete
  31. You may be right a player can have a bad day or a player just got outplayed. I'm just stating the mere facts that a Mcdougall type player cannot and should not be eligible to be bumped down 1 full point from 5.5 to 4.5 based on some social HTA tennis matches. Looking at a couple of her tournament results Mcdougall beat Lindloff/Cook 6-1 6-0 in the semis then Hollis/McCurtain 6-1 6-1 in the finals. All of the players listed above are 4.5 players and the matches weren't even competitive. I'm sure that the scores will be the same if Mcdougall plays summer 4.5 USTA League Tennis. But, Kudos for Hollis for a Good Pick up. If she cant beat them Recruit them.

  32. Shut the F-up your Great. Keep on saying that to yourself.

  33. So who will be the dominant Team of H Town next yr. in the 4.0's or 4.5's. Freeman? Kilshaw? Dwyer? Bobo? Ristau? Salinas? Interestingly enough I think League will be stronger than ever this upcoming League Season. I think Hollis's womens team could beat the 4.0 Teams and some 4.5 teams if they wanted to.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Kilshaw and Bobo will put together good teams as usual. Interesting to see how the trip to nationals changes things up for that core group of NOHO guys. Ristau and Salinas have great foundations but are at the mercy of who is available at their clubs to choose from and don't have as much depth as a result. It must drive them crazy to not be able to recruit. Freeman will put a great 4.0 team together but his powerhouse 4.5 team dissolved before city this year. We'll see if he can assemble a loyal group for '09. Dwyer is a good guy w/ good players but it really sucked to see that team take a sectional spot that a lot of teams would have jumped at and just piss it away. Hopefully next years squad can commit to finishing what they start.

    Should be another great year.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Kilshaw most likely will not have either Dibua brother as well as Armstrong/Hurlbert. They were the front line for the Crush but looks like he has some recruiting to do. Juan Lopez could still be a factor for them if he's healthy. As far as Bobo making another run at Captaining its highly unlikely due to he will most likely be a 5.0. Surely Freeman will make a run at 4.5's considering last year was a learning experience for him but Its almost Certain he will be representing Houston in the 4.0's.

  36. Regarding the two pumpkins, I heard that at the Masters Tournament Allen Torres dumped his match to Red in the Mixed Doubles as a favor for Red dumping a match to him at 5.0 Texas Sectionals tournament. Also they did not look very chummy, apparently allen beats Red to the buffet line. I hope they do not play as one because Red would surely make another nationals run.
    Austin's Real 4.5 tennis

    ReplyDelete
  37. To the above poster. Torres DID NOT tank his match to Red. Red is a better Mxd player than Allen hands down period. If Torres would have beaten Red at the Masters then he would have ended # 1 year end so why would or should he have tanked? As for this upcoming year Torres will have another All Star San Antonio Squad. I'm sure that San Antonio will be the Team to beat but let's just see what the ratings will bring come December 1st.

Next Years League Predictions.. #1 San Antonio #2 Austin #3 Houston #4 Dallas.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Red plays mixed so he can pick on the girls. His tricky serve works against the femails but not against guys who seen it before. It's pathetic that some people need to pump up there egos playing against girls.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Red has a GREAT serve against every one boy girl man women GAY or straight SO I HOPE RED & Allen do not get together again for another NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP .. AGAIN AS I HAVE SAID BEFORE ALLEN TORRES IS THE BEST / RULE BENDER COACH / CAPTAIN in the STATE maybe even the whole darn COUNTRY. Add Red's cheating lieing WAYS then they are a tough COMBO even at the buffet LINE

    ReplyDelete
  40. Allen Torres did finish number one in the STATE in the mix.
