Barriers to Entry

Man, this league stuff is getting quite pricey. I've recently met a few guys and girls who are interested in getting back into tennis. I told them how much fun it is to play in the USTA leagues. My mixed doubles partner hasn't played since juniors. She asked me how much it would cost her to play in the mixed league with me. I noticed last night that the signup fee for tennis link has gone from $8 to $20 (a 150 percent increase!!!). Of course, in addition to that, there's the $40 usta membership and the $20 HTA membership. Eighty dollars in upfront fees is too much (this doesn't even include court fees, balls, etc) when you consider that most people play maybe 5 or 6 matches in a season. I can't, in good conscience, ask my mixed partner to sign up for league.

I understand that USTA-Texas is behind the 150 percent increase. I can't imagine that their costs have gone up that dramatically????

  1. Amen to the cost of playing league being ridiculous.

  2. Wait a minute $20 for a team. It is $33 up in Dallas. Please explain.

If I am signing up a brand new player I am asking him to join USTA $20, registration fee $33 and court/ball fee $20 so yep $73 and we had 7 regular season matches and one "scrimmage" match. How do we sell new players and $73 to play a few matches oh and by the way you won't be playing a full 3rd set. I like the competition of USTA but I wonder if the league can continue to grow with these costs.

I know the money goes to grow tennis in the younger generation but what about our generation that is fighting a recession and looking for a stress outlet. Can we at least get a tax write off for our donation or something?

If the USTA is truly in trouble maybe there needs to be a radical change so that costs are not passed onto the members so strongly. I seem to remember prize money at the US Open climbing to a record amount. God forbid Roger and the gang take a paycut.

  9. Yes, everything is getting more pricey with USTA.

I still do not understand the $2 fee that I have to pay that makes the processing easier for USTA/HTA?

I feel the same empty "just been raped" feeling I get when I buy something through ticketmaster and pay those fees.

The internet signup has enabled USTA to collect their revenue in a more streamlined fashion versus old days where we all sent checks in and then USTA had to collect from HTA.

  11. I hate to say it, but anyone who charges fees to run credit cards in the amount the USTA does, is paying someones salary with the amounts we pay. It takes cents to run our transactions, not dollars.

  12. I feel like the fees are just about right, $20 is reasonable.

  13. If you play 5 matches and don't play any other leagues, it costs you about 20 bucks per match. Outlandish

  14. In Arkansas it is $23 initial fee for league, lucky to play 4 team matches, then there is Mid-Season Tournament, which was $175 a team, then State Tournament is $25 a person (team of 12 = $300) to play 3 matches, then if team advances to Sectionals it $20 a person more.
I loved playing DFW Leagues as it was $30 per league, play 7-10 Team Matches and you did not pay another entry fee for City or Sectionals.

  15. Yikes I did know about those fees but we are lucky in TX that we don't have to pay extra when we do well in our city. They day a winning team has to pony up hundreds of dollars to play in a tourney might be the downturn in league tennis.

  16. Seems like this year's league is not as competitive as last year, I did see much interests shown on this blog anymore.

  17. It's almost impossible to know how competetive the league is going to be at this point because so many teams have yet to signup their players.
