Gypsies/Shwings results are interesting. I was surprised to see Rothe/Hall and Kim/Kim taken to the woodshed like that...
Where was Callaway???
The Hurricane 4.0 team is overrated. If Soda Heng doesn't cramp up, we might be talking about a huge "upset" last night...
I am curious to see just HOW MUCH tanking goes on in the remainder of the 5.0 season with nothing on the line. Will there be roster additions simply for tanking purposes???
Looks like Copperfield 4.5 swept out and took the division crown. Not surprising...
What IS surprising is that nobody told Shaan Patel about "score managing". Two double bagels? Yikes...
Lakeside 4.0 may find the playoffs just a BIT tougher than regular season matches in their easy division. Good job pulling out a win last night...
Minh Hoang was in the singles lineup last night. Glad his knee has healed. His presence in singles makes a huge difference for them...
Kevin Lotz played singles for Unicorns last night, shoring up what looked to be a weakness. Unicorns have emerged as the favorites to win their pool...
Anyone have any news on Clambakes-Big Bangers? I haven't done the math...are the Bangers still in the hunt???
Black Sheep won about 64 pct. of games last night. Will that sew up a spot???

We knew playoffs would be toughter, but didn't know Sienna would be that tough. Whoever keeps writing "Sienne suck" (sic) has got it way wrong. They have some great talent that I expect to see on some college teams soon.
ReplyDeleteOff topic, I suppose, but I was a bit of an asshole last night. Our match was tied at two and the opposing player was on the ground cramping, being tended to by his captain and players. I walked out there and tried to hurry them along, as I thought they were taking too long.
ReplyDeleteThe opposing captain commented "Come on, he's dying out there!", to which I responded "He should retire, then."
Anyway, it makes me wonder what the proper protocol is in such a situation. Obviously I am (sometimes overly?) competitive, but to be honest I don't really know the rules/protocol in such a situation and would love to hear peoples' thoughts/opinions.
BTW, the cramper (Soda Heng) recovered and despite being in discomfort showed great heart/guts and nearly pulled out his match.
I believe the applicable rule can be found in Friend at Court, article 29c. Once medical treatment has arrived and the condition been diagnosed, he has three minutes to be treated and then has to continue or retire. Also see section III.E. and the FAQs within, and the big table at the end of the section. You were probably correct. Whether you were "nice" to do that and whether being "nice" is expected behavior in the playoffs, I'll leave to others to comment on.
ReplyDeleteNG
Yeah HTown, you were an ass!!! You might compliment your opponent now, but your character showed.
ReplyDeleteGreg - you always throw your team under the bus.
ReplyDeleteWe were tied 2-2 last night with one singles line still going against the BigBangers.
Greg is known for giving his team no credit. Rather than support his team he says they are " overrated" and that the Unicorns are the favorite. Maybe he should carry their cooler of beer and be their cheerleader too. It's okay though, as much as an asshole as he was last night I hope that if and when he steps on the court he can come to realization that he's just not that good himself.
ReplyDeleteI came to that conclusion years ago.
ReplyDeleteGreg is also very positive.
ReplyDeleteAnyone done the math on the 4.5 wildcards?
ReplyDeleteGive the guy a break. It's his job as head blogger/mediator to be objective and if he were to pump up his team everyone would ride his ass for that too.
ReplyDeleteI gave up a long long long long long time ago signing my posts. This blog is one of the most heartless ruthless blogs I've ever seen. I've looked at the Austin and Dallas blogs and they dont put up with the personal attacks that we see on this one. We're just a bunch of red neck asshole hypocrites is what we are.
ReplyDeleteSeinna sucks, they wont win line agianst chancellors.
ReplyDeleteThe Bangers won 3-2 last night. And for you to walk out there on the other side of the court while he's down is bush league.
ReplyDeleteAppreciate the opinions...no hard feelings here. Maybe it WAS bush league...???
ReplyDeleteI was with a team in 1999 (I think?) that made it to the 4.5 Sectional finals. Kevin Lemke started cramping in a match against our player and he was overly tended to by his captain and teammates and our captain did nothing about it. The Austin team got an edge as a result, and ended up beating us to go to Nationals. That has always stuck with me.
I care (too much) about what people think of me sometimes, but despite that, I would probably be a bush league asshole if I were in that situation again, despite people seeing my "true colors".
Somewhat in my defense, the opposing team had a player show up more than 15 minutes late last night. We allowed him to play (and they won their line). Obviously it's a different situation...
The Medical time out should not be taken for cramps. They left Baghdatis out there to cramp, They can leave the Soda pop out there to fizzle out.
ReplyDeleteGreg, don't sweat it. We are all bushes but hate to admit it and it's much easier to poke holes and attack those then to admit that we ourselves can bush with the best of them.
ReplyDeletewhen will the 4.5 playoffs be?
ReplyDeletehaterz gonna hate.
ReplyDeleteAre all of the scores posted? Do we know what the seeds will be for the 4.5 playoffs?
ReplyDeleteYou did right Greg...You have to protect and take care of your team...not the opponent's. Forget these bush league anonymous commenters.
ReplyDeleteJoe
I think your cramping situation comes down to: Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.
ReplyDeleteIf you were cramping up how would you want to be treated? You guys preach about having Houston putting the best team forward, well winning because you hurry along someone with cramps isn't going to help put the best team forward. Help the other guy up, get him some fluids and play your best. Then let the chips fall where they will.
that all sounds ideal 10:25, but that open up to false cramping and fake injuries to ice someone. No special treatment and keep it consistent.
ReplyDeleteI don't know about Htown but my feeling is that if you cramp you didn't train hard enough. It is no add and third set tie breaker! Being in shape is part of the game. There is a three minute rule for a reason.
ReplyDeleteReally? Playoff time and we're spending the day discussing Greg's manners???
ReplyDelete10:31 not to mention it was at NIGHT. What are you going to do during the day, 2 matches. If you can make it at night you have no business playing in Dallas in August anyways.
ReplyDeleteAre you serious? Cfield won 4 1st sets and lost all 4 in a 3rd set TB. Ouch
ReplyDeleteAnyone else scared of the Good Guys and Unicorns after last night? The 2nd place teams in each of their division looked pretty strong against division winners last night.
ReplyDeleteThere's a long way to go, but they may be emerging as the teams to beat!
Perhaps Copperfield got cramps
ReplyDeleteBy my math (very unofficial - Diana's is the only math that counts), 4.5 shapes up this way. Best 2nd-place team Deucebags with 65.1% games won, next is Black Sheep with 58.3%, third best Titans with 58.1%. Katy Coaches at 56.4% and Big Bangers at 55.5% look to be out. Two matches are unreported, Fires vs. Jedi Knights and Ball Busters vs. Jedi Knights. Those should have no playoff implications even if one or both were turned in as team defaults (in which case all of that team's matches are null and void in that round, but still Deucebags I think would make the playoffs). We'll see if my math matches Diana's or not.
ReplyDeleteNG
Once the wild teams are selected, then the numbers/math should be published or sent to the captains. That would help with the transparancy that we have been asking of HTA.
ReplyDeleteAll I know is Renish played a great match to get the "W" for his team. He lost the first set and was down a break in the 2nd and managed to come back and win in a 3rd set TB. Kudos to him for keeping his nerves when Soda was cramping and took his injury time out. It's not easy to play under those conditions. Good Job Renish!!
ReplyDeleteDid someone say bush league? How do I sign up?
ReplyDeleteSienna player
Hurricanes def are not overrated. they just took RPM a little too lightly and did not put out a strong lineup out.
ReplyDeleteI love bush! i wanna sign up too! cant decide between bush league or beer pong league
ReplyDeleteIf you looked at the numbers going into last night, Ssswwwing was pretty much out of it before the night started. They had to win at least 4-1 just to force a second place tie and that probable wouldn't have been enough to make the playoffs. So there was not a lot of energy by some memebers of the team. Just went through the motions.
ReplyDeleteI disagree with Numbers Guy that the remaining matches are unimportant. Team defaults affect wild card eligibility from other divisions.
ReplyDeleteAccording to the rule below. Any team that gives a team default has ALL of its match eliminate in round robin. If the Fires and Jedi Knights team default, all of the those big juicy wins that the Deucebags wrapped up are gone and their percentage of games won craters. BTW, this is a National rule so it cannot be waived by HTA.
2.03L Scoring of Team Defaults. If a team defaults an entire team match for any reason during round robin play, then all matches of that team played or to be played, shall be null and void. If all teams in contention for the Championships have already played the defaulting team in good faith, the matches stand as played. The section may impose further sanctions or penalties on said team.
Ok, given that the Ball Busters have already team defaulted against the Deucebags, are the Ball Busters results against Copperfield also null and void for seeding purposes? Is that match going to count for percentage of games won for Copperfield? Copperfield racked up an incredible 60-5 win against the Ball Busters in their last match. (Way to roll over, Denny.)
ReplyDeleteI want to play bush.
ReplyDeleteBabu
The whole handling of team defaults is inconsistent. It appears that team defaults are used on Tennislink to determine if you win the division, but are not counted by HTA to determine wildcards. A little consistency would be nice.
ReplyDelete12:31 you're an idiot!
ReplyDeleteGood luck to everybody in the playoffs!!!
ReplyDeleteAnd farewell to Phong Regent who is moving away.
Phong is definitely one of the good guys in tennis in Houston. We will miss you.
Take care Phong...hope you're not moving to Dallas, Austin or San Antonio.
ReplyDeleteHouston just lost another great player in Phong
ReplyDeleteI agree heartily. Phong is a cool guy who will be missed in Houston league tennis.
ReplyDeleteNew Orleans is where he is going.
ReplyDeleteGood luck to Phong and Thy. They've been fixtures on the Houston Tennis Scene for more than a decade.
ReplyDeleteRegent is a wannabe white boy
ReplyDeleteSo I wasn't sure what POS stands for but when I saw that the post was removed it made me start thinking. Piece of Sh_t? really? Phong and Thy are both the nicest most stand up people you will ever meet. On and off the court.
ReplyDeleteMurray, you suck
ReplyDeletePower to the Twinkies!
ReplyDeleteWhat was Unicorns score?
ReplyDeletewhat makes unicorn the favorite? just wondering
ReplyDeleteCouple of reasons: Hurricanes looked vulnerable last night, while Unicorns (from what I could tell) looked strong.
ReplyDeleteSecondly, the Unicorns and Hurricanes scrimmaged last week and frankly, the Unicorns dominated.
Thirdly, I AM historically negative about the teams I play on.
Unicorns are favorites because they're just a likable bunch of guys (go watch a match, they'll probably offer you a beer). Hurricanes have been known to kick opponents a little when they are injured no one likes them as much. When it comes to tennis skills, well smart money's still on the Hurricanes.
ReplyDeleteHurricanes' second and third string looked vulnerable last night. So what.
ReplyDeleteBeinart is such a likable guy
ReplyDeletePeople keep saying it was their second stringers but who was really missing? Rios is playing 4.5 I assume. So they can't use him anyways. What is their starting lineup?
ReplyDeleteBeinart is a dick.
ReplyDeleteH town you are a bushy vagina.
ReplyDeleteAlejandro montes and Brian mandell is who they are hiding
ReplyDeleteAny idea on when HTA will announce the 4.5 playoff schedule, or will they wait till Monday?
ReplyDeleteLet's be honest. Greg and Towles are basically the only guys to post under their names on this blog. They have the gonads to respond to sometimes nasty comments from anonymous posters.
ReplyDeleteI've been tempted to post under my real name, but I'd rather not have the hassle of everyone taking that opportunity to bitch about me or one of my players.
After trying to follow that lame-ass Austin tennis blog, I now really appreciate the sense of community this blog generates for Houston league tennis. So, props to you, Greg!
@Greg: There are fun matches, there is practice, and there are tournament matches (league play falls into this category, especially during the play-offs). Nobody should call you anything, when you're trying to enforce the official rules made for tennis. After a player gets injured (or cramps up) he has 3 minutes. Then he must go on or retire.
ReplyDeleteI remember a very important match 9 years ago, when my opponent cramped up at the end of the 2nd set. I let him rest for 15 minutes, and he came back running faster than lightning. He cramped up again, but that was right after he took the 2nd and 3rd set from me. Everyone on my team said I should have called a default after 3 minutes... our team lost by one line, because I didn't say anything after 3 minutes.
I'm not 100% but cramps are not eligible for a medical time out anymore right?
ReplyDeletemedical is medical .. does it matter what type of medical condition it is?
ReplyDeletecramping is not medical, it's conditioning.
ReplyDeleteOn the pro tour you can't call a medical time out for cramping anymore. Not sure if that is the case with USTA as well. I can't find anything on it.
ReplyDeleteWhy didn't Babu play last night? He would have provided the upset of Lakeside last night.
ReplyDeletestill avoiding the fact that hurricanes did not put out their best lineup, not even close
ReplyDeletewhy wasn't musa salihu or danny vu playing singles last night?
ReplyDeleteyear after year its the same thing... they will not reveal their top players until they truly have to... i'm sure last night did give them quite a scare. they probably did not think they would have lost one of the singles and goto a 3rd set w/renish playing... gotta give that 19 yo kid some credit for not choking under pressure even at 9-9 tie breaker.
ReplyDeleteim sure the captain knew they were going to lose singles line 2, and probably doubles line 3, ill bet you his guaranteed wins were vu/jones yamaguchi/phan and renish, while the others being a toss up, that speaks volume of how good their players actually are
ReplyDeletedidn't freeman's team get Dqed with ellingston last year? and this year he is still risking another dq?
ReplyDeleteFrom what I saw out there Yamaguchi and Phan were very good and we know Renish is good. If you add Rios to their lineup and Vu to singles they have some very solid lines.
ReplyDeleteThis year Hurricanes team will win easy. With Danny Vu on this years team, it is clearly better than last years team and they won last year.
ReplyDeleteAnonymous you are a bushy vagina. It's the playoffs. If you don't know by know who the best players are by now you've already lost. Hurricanes play the best lineup they can every night. Third string my Fucking ass. By the way Freeman likes to lick sweaty ballsacks.
ReplyDeleteFuck the Dallas and Austin blogs! The Houston blog has character, humor and bushy vaginas.
ReplyDeleteRenish probably gave freeman a nice scare last night, I don't think it was the best idea to put him in singles line 1 considering the condition I saw his right arm in last night. I have seen the kid play before and last night wasn't even 30% of the game he has got. But bravo for pulling out and winning the match.
ReplyDeleteThe only cramps on this blog are of the PMS kind from all the bitching and moaning. I will gladly put up with my girlfriends monthly cycle to only deal with you assholes once a week. P.S. great fucking blog!
ReplyDeleteSandbagging builds character. Meowwwww!!!
ReplyDelete3:18 if Canes are banking on Montes to make it to Sectionals they are in trouble!!!!
ReplyDeleteTook a look at the 5.0 schedule. Since they have 7 teams and can only play one full round robin in 10 matches, they should have treated the first four match as "preseason" and the last 6 matches as the round robin for the league championship.
ReplyDeleteUsing the first six matches to determine the champion makes the last four meaningless (and great for sandbagging).
4.5 playoff pools up on web
ReplyDeleteFlight #1 - Lakeside, Blast, Taylor, Deucebags
Flight #2 - Copperfield, Hurricanes, Blacksheep, Sugarcreek
Lakeside, Blast, Copperfield and Hurricanes get home matches on the 7th.
Greg,
ReplyDeleteCramps are part of the game. If you cramp you have to deal with it. If you can't you lose. Period.
You did the right thing
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ALHObkStAt0
Horrible to watch. Wozniacki got very little attention for her cramps, even a delay of game warning.
I'm not positive but I could have sworn after that pro match when the player was in pain on the court, stretched out, and no one would help they changed it so that conditioning would be included in injury timeouts. However, just like an injury you're only allowed one time out per like injury so you're only allowed 1 timeout for cramps.
ReplyDelete@9:08 and others confused about the injury time out. The ITF (Grand Slams & Davis Cup), ATP (men pros), and WTA (women pros) all have different rules including injury time outs. The USTA (the league that we play in) also has different rules from the above mentioned organizations. Remember the different tie break rules by each of the above. Numbers Guy cited the correct rule from the Friend at Court.
ReplyDeleteThanks Mike
ReplyDeleteLOL, the Babu comments are getting deleted. Excellent!
ReplyDeleteWhen I meet Babu, I am going to kick his @#$%.
ReplyDeleteThis isn't Babu's fault, he is a nice guy.
ReplyDeleteBabu is my friend
ReplyDeleteMy name is Babu Zachariah. If anyone else uses my name on this blog - I am going to kick your ASS!!!!!!!!!!! LEAVE ME ALONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteI am a tenth dan black belt and received my training in Okinawa. I will kick everyone's ass.
ReplyDeleteBabu is my pet gorilla
ReplyDeleteYo mann, my Momma's name is Babu
ReplyDeleteWill you guys leave Babu alone, He is one of the nicest tennis players in houston and also the best looking one, and by the way he beat the brian bro in doubles. I think
ReplyDeleteI think babu was at the Titans team party last year dancing with douds wife or maybe wife dancing for him.
ReplyDeleteBabu danced with Simon on the kitchen table after the jello shots.
ReplyDeleteBabu does table dances at La Bare on ladies night.
ReplyDeleteOMFG, could we get back to the playoffs? BTW, will Babu be playing?
ReplyDeleteBabu just won wimbledon and he will be back for the city playoffs
ReplyDeletedidn't rios play for TSU? i dont understand how he can be a 4.0....
ReplyDeleteHe's an "A" rating which technically he could be protested but he's not playing for the 4.0 team anyways. And yeah, he shouldn't have been able to even self-rate 4.5 but that's a different issue. There are always going to be snakes like Rios who lie and cheat.
ReplyDeleteOk so I've been somewhat of a Rios supporter thinking he had a computer rating and why rag on the guy but really an "a". That means he appealed to rate below where he should be. What an F'ing loser.
ReplyDeleteits all a waste of time talking about him because has been playing 4.5 all season anyway
ReplyDeleteI look forward to a blog without Rios and Babu
ReplyDeleteHow did Renish play 5.5 last year, and now he plays 4.0. How is that possible?
ReplyDeleteSandwich Blaster... is there practice for the competitive group on Monday, July 4 at LLTC with you and coach John?
ReplyDeletewho is renish and what team is he on?
ReplyDelete11:12 - It's just means that he played in the spring 2010 4.5-5.0 singles league, a common occurrence for good 4.0 singles players.
ReplyDelete10:18 Did you hear about Rios and babus match, it was like Nadal and jokovic, the best of the best
ReplyDelete@2:07: Renish Barkat Halani plays for the 4.0 Hurricanes
ReplyDelete@2:18: He played 5.5 doubles last year, and he played 5.5 SINGLES this year (and he won 2 matches). 5.5 - is that a "common occurrence" that you drop 1.5 ratings in 3 months??? Are you kidding me?
6:07 - Please learn to use Tennislink and avoid embarrassing yourself more. I usually don't bother to educate fools, but I'll make an exception for you.
ReplyDeleteHalani played in the HTA Spring 2011 4.5 doubles league. That league had 3 division: 4.5i, 4.5ii, 4.5+. HTA allowed two 5.0 players in the 4.5i and 4.5ii division. In the 4.5+ divisions, 2 5.0s and 5.5s were allowed. That is why the league has 5.5 max rating on TennisLink.
If you'd take the time to actually look at the team Halani was on, it was composed mainly of 4.0s and 4.5s, but also include one 3.5 and 5.0. Halani was a 4.0.
@6:26: Thank you for the education of a fool.
ReplyDelete4.0 & 4.5 Playoff Predictions? Who want to start?
ReplyDelete@6:50 You're welcome. I apologize for being an ass.
ReplyDeleteOk. 4.5 playoffs
ReplyDeleteLakeside over Duecebags - 3-2 (2 singles + Connell/Wright_)
Blast over Taylor - 3-2 (Pete T. + 2 doubles)
Hurricanes over Sugarcreek - 4-1 (Canes sweep doubles)
Blacksheep over Copperfield 3-2 (No Adam Kent)
I will agree with 2 of those but after being in blast's division I say they sweep gypsies 5-0. Copperfield beats blacksheep 3-2 because they will sweep singles.
ReplyDeletei saw babu and he plays like sht. the only person that can play is rios and blaster.
ReplyDeleteHere's my shot at 4.5:
ReplyDeletePool 1 - Other than the Duecebags, there's relatively no playoff experience in this division. There's 1 really good team in Lakeside with 3 decent and very capable teams behind them.
Lakeside 3-0
Duecebags 1-2
JCC 1-2
Gypsies 1-2
Pool 2 - This division is loaded with playoff experience and 3 very even teams that will all beat each other up.
Hurricanes 2-1
Copperfield 2-1
Westside 2-1
Sugar Creek 0-3
Both Hurricanes and Lakeside advance to sectionals, so a non-eventful final.
Don't know 4.0 as well (but I do know some of the supposed better players on most teams) so I'll try:
Pool 1:
Chancellors 4-0
Lakeside 2-2
Good Guys 2-2
Copperfield 1-3
Sienna 1-3
Pool 2:
Hurricanes 4-0
Horses & Ponies 2-2
Cincho Ranch 2-2
RPM 2-2
GTAC 0-4
Chancellors & Hurricanes both to sectionals, a non-eventful final.
@1:09
ReplyDeleteNo there will be no practice Mr.Q, thank god.
There is just no way Unicorns go 2-2, there doubles team are strong, and they have tightened up their singles selection, I am predicting a 4-1 win over canes, sweeping doubles and losing a singles line.
ReplyDeleteWho are top 4.5 singles players in playoffs
ReplyDeleteKudrick, Taylor, Day, Bui, Borkop, Hess?
Who were the most impressive 4.5 to 5.0 bumpups this season and who should be coming back down?
ReplyDeleteThe bumped players from the Hurricanes 2009 Nationals team are coming back down to 4.5, so watch out. Next year everyone is playing for 2nd place again.
ReplyDeletetope 4.5 singles are
ReplyDeletekudrick, hess, kent, bui, taylor, puma
flight1- no one but the exception of taylor will win a singles match against lakeside.
flight2- copperfield will need both kudrick and kent to play singles to against hurricanes. they will beat hurricanes if they do this.
10:35 I think Babu and Rios took your lunch in doubles + a little spanking
ReplyDeleteSimon Jim for president
ReplyDelete@ 2:19 AM
ReplyDeleteany team will sweep the hurricanes for sure.
except RPM
It will be interesting once Sectional flights come out if there will be some strategy for going as the winner or the wild card
ReplyDeleteDoes anyone here think the Deucebags can beat Lakeside first round? The Deucebags have some experienced singles players on the team like Bishop, Goldberg and Schmucker so it could be an interesting singles lineup between the two teams.
ReplyDeleteROTFLMAO
ReplyDeleteThe Duecebags
ReplyDeleteBui could lose to Schumaker if he is playing well and makes Bui hit a lot of balls. Just dont see anyone beating Hess other than potentially Taylor later on.
ReplyDeleteTop 3 singles in order are
1. Hess
2. Taylor
3.Kudrick
Muhala and elligsen for Gypsies have pretty good records so far. How good are these guys?
ReplyDeletegreg is a damn good player. we tried to recruit him on the 4.5 canes team...
ReplyDeleteI tried to recruit him for my 3.5 team.
ReplyDeleteI like men! ~Ben Dover
ReplyDeletePaging Mike Hunt...paging Mike Hunt.
ReplyDeleteHow good is this Shaan Patel @ Copperfield? Where would he rank? There is not much record on him other than he won both his singles 6-0, 6-0.
ReplyDeleteIs he in the same league as Kudrick, Hess and Taylor?
if copperfield plays it right, they will beat canes. kudrick, kent or patel for singles. or put kent in doubles. that's three lines right there.
ReplyDeleteno one on dbags team are in the same singles level as hess and bui. dbag's only chance is tryting to sweep doubles.
Please beat these young guys who are obviously new to the blog, delete delete delete enough already. Have some respect as other cities read this blog to find out about Houston tennis.
ReplyDelete10:55
ReplyDeleteseriously. show some respect...
i was out at lee leclear today and watched the hurricanes 4.5 team and boy are they strong.
the unicorns so so and RPM so so
anyone hear from Minh Hoang?
ReplyDeletei hope he is alright
what happened to minh?
ReplyDeleteLets just get this straight, Renish Barkat Halani is TOO GOOD to be PLAYING 4.0!
ReplyDeleteRenish Barkat Halani he played 18s champs, not super champs. He is an above average 4.0 nothing else. Danny Vu would beat him 6-0, 6-0, if he does not tank.
ReplyDeleteBabu would beat Renish and has at the Sugarland Middle School courts.
ReplyDeletewhat team is danny vu on? 4.0 or 4.5? our captain wants to check out his history
ReplyDelete
