Early Updates.

It sure was boring out at LLTC tonight. The most interesting match out there may have been the practice match being played by Hiep Chung, who will probably make it to Sectionals on the Austin 5.0 team.

The Sugar Creek-Hurricane match was a dud. Sean Straley again missed the Hurricanes match, instead playing 5.0. I didn't hang around 'til the end but I believe the 'Canes swept. The only decent matchup was between Omon and Antoine Ford, which went to Omon in a third set breaker. Matt Sumrall and Soong Hay Tam were almost flawless in their doubles matchup. I think the Hurricanes may have another tough doubles team that they can count on come playoff time. It was nice to see the Aggies dominating on the tennis court. If only the football team were as talented. :)

The Hurricane 4.0 team had a yawner as well, and SAP also looked to be in control of their matchup.

As of right now the Deucebags are ahead 3-0 with the other two matches looking pretty tight. Aadrian Hasker won a tight two setter over Juan Trevino.

The Lakeside 4.0 team breezed to a 5-0 win, putting the pressure on its two rivals. It appears now that they will make city playoffs and the Smokers/Chancellor's battle will decide the other spot.

My last report was that NWO was trailing in its matchup with the Hurricane junior varsity. I heard that Roberto Narajos had easily handled Corbin Cooke and that singles specialists Eddie Janek and Ismael Dutchover had pulled out line three doubles in the third set.

Edit: Hurricanes JV ended up winning 4-1 and Kingwood beat the Black Sheep 3-2. I believe Bradley and Lacy swept the singles, beating Quack Bui and Steve Phan, respectively. If that's true, it's Steve's first ever singles loss in 4.5.

  1. Hurricane JV won 4-1

  2. Lost forest also beat rolido boys tonight. That all but solidifies 3/4 divisons in 4.0 with div1 the only one still undefined.

In an outside shot, Willowfork can tie CuField , but needs lots of help in game differential to close the gap.

  3. Thi won his doubles match in his Sienna debut. He played like a Zen Master. Word on the street is that Sienna is planning to recruit his brother, Thi Thi.

  4. Knutson and Wood should get moved down to 3.5.

  5. They still wouldn't win.

  6. Division II is still unsettled as well

  7. doesn't this put ws blacksheep ahead in the standings? It all comes down to next week. definitely didn't think Lacy could beat Phan.

can't believe sugar creek was such a dud this week.

playoffs will be VERY interesting this year.

  8. Early Predictions for 4.5

    1. Hurricanes
    2. Kingwood Crush
    3. Copperfield Lobsters
    4. Duecbags
    5. Westside Black Sheep
    6. Schwinng

Should be a competitive city playoff round robin.

  9. What round robin, it's the old format.

  10. lacy beat phan? wow, that's a big statement for blacksheeps. what was the score? how about the other singles bradley vs bui? score?

  11. the Deucebags ended up sweeping Sienna last night.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Holmes gave Moser another ass whooping last night. Copperfield could be a factor.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Why didn't Bobo and Whitsett play together last night? Have they split up?

    ReplyDelete
  14. One similar thread can be said for the 4.0, 4.5, & 5.0 playoff teams....Copperfield.

Let's hope one or two of them get past the city playoffs.

  15. So if my math is right does that mean that deucebags only need to win 1 line out of the next 6 they have?

They are currently 3-4 and tied at 20 ind wins with the 5 they got last night plus the 2 they currently have from the unfinished match.

So IF miguel beats Sarosh OR he loses and they dont' get swept by the hurricanes in the last match they are in right?

I'm asian but I suck at math so someone confirm please.

  16. No Michael!! Deucebags need to win team match against Hurricanes to solidify spot into playoffs. They will be 4-5 record and up in lines which is next tiebreaker.

    ReplyDelete
  17. If Miguel loses, they'll be 3-5 with just the Hurricanes remaining. Sugar Creek ended up 4-5, so the Deucebags will need a win over the Hurricanes.

If Miguel wins the Deucebags will be 4-4 with 21 individual wins (I think), so they'll have things sewn up.

Basically, it is BY FAR, the biggest match/tiebreaker of the year in Houston league tennis. I hope there are a lotta' people there when it takes place. I'd like to watch myself.

    Someone check my calculations...

  18. Michael,
you are a disgrace to asians with the math. miguel would have to beat sarosh. if he doesn't, then the duecebags would have to beat the hurricanes in the last meeting. if they lose both meeting with the hurricanes, then they have more loses then sugar creek.

  19. anyone know the reason why wstc nwo did not take their match against hurricanes jv seriously. looks like two of their top singles players did not play. this pretty much takes them out of the playoffs.

    ReplyDelete
  20. That is funny... disgrace to math and Asians. This is a rough crowd.

    ReplyDelete
  21. michael - be a good Asian like me and get yourself a good abacus

    ReplyDelete
  22. I did say I sucked at math =P. I'm more along the lines of Kobayashi. Unlike normal asians I CAN EAT....A LOT!! OH yeah and I'm a Uh.... a doubles specialist?? =P

  23. Since the season is winding down, does anyone have any thoughts on the most interesting team or individual matches this year?

    Best team match?

    Best individual match?

    Biggest upset or surprise?

    ReplyDelete
  24. You don't have Kobayashi's abs.

  25. Best comeback:
    Copperfield Lobsters.
For a small racquet club and a handful of 4.5 members, losing John Kudrick and Dave Mcmullan might have posed disaster. After regrouping and signing on Samuel Holmes and Chris Lubrano, David Mazaltov, the players have banded together a team in contention for USTA Sectionals.

  26. Copperfield will get hammered at city playoffs. They are in the weakest division.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Yes, but their captain is a tool.

    ReplyDelete
  28. biggest upset....

    1. puma over hasker
    2. lacy over phan

however, they were both 3rd set tie-breakers

    ReplyDelete
  29. lacy over phan is not that big of an upset if at all... i don't think phan is that great..

    ReplyDelete
  30. Hey Salinas,

thanks for the post at 2:32

    ReplyDelete
  31. Phan may not be "that great" but the guy was 18-0 before last night so he must have been doing something right.

Did anyone see the match last night? How did Lacy beat him?

Agree that Puma over Hasker was definitely an upset.

    ReplyDelete
  32. of course phan is a good player, but he's not nearly as good as hasker or omon or the top tier guys in my mind.

    ReplyDelete
  33. At one time he was better than all of those guys. Now, he's just average. There are at least ten guys in the 4.5 league who can beat him. He's on Lacey's level, and that's middle of the pack.

    ReplyDelete
  34. "how did lacy beat phan?"

people seem to forget that lacy's a tough serve and volleyer, and he's also a top 4.5 player.
at any moment anyone can get beat. especially when your match is decided on a third set tie-breaker.
