Look at all these rumors...
Lots of stuff flying around. I'm sure Diana is very busy. There are numerous rules questions and possibly even some protests to sort through...

News and information about Houston's USTA Men's Tennis league
What rumors?
ReplyDeleteWhy spread rumors around when they could turn out to be just that, only rumors?
ReplyDeleteCome on, what is the purpose of this blog other than to spread rumors that both entertain and infuriate?
ReplyDeleteHere's the latest one that I heard: Red has started hormone treatments in preparation for an off-season sex change operation so he can put together a nationally competitive 9.0 mixed team. Of course, he'll still need a 5.0 guy to partner with.
Does anyone know anything about the Qualifying Tournament in Abilene this weekend? Who's the favorite? Also can the Beaumont players (Vernon/Mills) play for the Hurricanes during the Playoffs?
ReplyDeleteThere is alot of speculation to the players who are not HTA members being ineligible for the playoffs this weekend. I guess we will find out very soon if the HTA will enforce these rules.
ReplyDeleteAbilene has got to be the QT favorite.
ReplyDeleteWhy does abilene have to be QT favorite? Leach will bring a Solid Team. Seems like Abilene QT has some current Mcmurry College players. HMM
ReplyDeleteHTA should enforce membership from day one.
ReplyDeleteDo not overlook the NETX team, would take experience over a bunch of DIII players at an unranked school.
ReplyDeleteWhy is it that prior to his "death" you never saw Elvis and Red in the same room?
ReplyDeleteperfect, Red's new nickname
ReplyDeleteFat Elvis
Anybody have any Early predictions on the Westside vs. Schwinng Match-up. What about the Hurricanes vs Copperfield Match-up.
ReplyDeleteThe Hurricanes will probably win if they can steal a singles line. I think they have the edge in doubles but I am not sure they can beat the Mob Squad unless they win a singles match.
ReplyDeleteschwing vs westside??
ReplyDeletewestide will win both singles and all the doubles will be competitive. westside wins 4-1.
ReplyDeletehurricanes will get killed in singles. might have a chance in doubles, but copperfield's doubles team is also strong. copperfield wins 3-2
ReplyDeleteMob singles are not that strong, and they are beatable.
ReplyDeleteCopperfield's strength will be in singles with Kudrick, Bergmann and or Kent. Doubles are average at best, with the exception of Robins.
ReplyDeleteWho will Mob use in singles? There singles doesn't look that good to me.
ReplyDeleteTime for what people think the line ups are going to be for each of the 4.5 match ups
ReplyDeleteHas the Mob Squad ever NOT won Houston? The only times I can remember them not advancing to sectionals are years when they didn't play.
ReplyDeleteDIV I playoffs
ReplyDeleteRios, Mills, the great Sarosh will probably play singles for the hurricanes.
Phan, Phommarath, Hasker will probably play singles for the Mob.
Bergman, Kent, Kudrick will probably play singles for copperfield.
The weakest singles will have to go to the Hurricanes.
Even if the Mob wins their bracket, they are no where near the quality of the Kingwood team.
ReplyDeleteThey will get CRUSHED!!!!
ReplyDeletecopperfield beats hurricanes 3-2
ReplyDeletemob beats hurricanes 3-2
copperfield beats mob 3-2
crush beats westside 4-1
westside beats swhings 3-2
crush beats swhings 4-1
Is Red playing for Mob squad? Not that he will help much.
ReplyDeleteRed joins every team that is in first place in every division. Oh also did I mention he is a complete loser.
ReplyDeleteI don't think anyone on the 1st place NOHO team can play for their Thursday evening teams in city.
ReplyDeleteThat means Adam Kent is out for Copperfield. Copperfield is still the team to beat in that pool.
ReplyDeleteIs Copperfield the team to beat without Kent? I think it depends on how good Bergmann is.
ReplyDeleteTo me, that whole division is a toss-up. With Kent: edge to Copperfield. Otherwise, edge to Mob Squad. Their doubles are better than people think.
I'm usually wrong more often than not.
Bergmann is very good, but he barely squeaked by Rice's Bui the other night. Heck Bui was playing 4.0 a couple of years ago. Copperfield's only chance is to sweep the singles because I only see them winning one doubles line. If Kent is really out, then I don't see them pulling it off.
ReplyDeleteSolinas was pushing Bergmann to do a better job of managing his scores.
ReplyDelete4.5
ReplyDeleteSo did Rice and Copperfield actually play the match that knocked Westside into 2nd place? It seams that it was the perfect score and everything was just right, too right in my opinion.
Cheaters never win and winners never cheat....of wait!
oh wait....
ReplyDeleteBeing that the Rice/Copperfield match is fictious, what emphasis would you put on the scores?
ReplyDelete4.0 news: Chancellor's loses 5 players from playoffs for not being HTA members (including Jonathan Hao Nguyen and Bryan Lam plus 3 others). Copperfield loses 2 (Kirk Mann and Roberto ??)
ReplyDeletePlayers DQd from Playoffs:
ReplyDeleteCHANCELLORS PLAYERS:
Jonathon Hao Nguyen
Kiet S. Nhan
Bryan Lam
Dennis Shiau
Edward Wong
COPPERFIELD:
Kirk Mann
Roberto Vazquez
It's beyond me how Captains don't make sure their guys are signed up with HTA. Shame shame shame.
ReplyDeleteYes. That is bad of the captain.
ReplyDeleteLooks like from the records those guys may not have played too frequently and may not have known as individuals, but the captain should have walked them through the requirements.
What a shame. Does anyone know if those guys were part of the core strength or just guys on the periphery?
I think mostly every team had players who weren't signed up, at least for some portion of the season. The difference is that in this case someone decided to file a formal protest.
ReplyDeleteActually, a captain should not have to file a protest for that. HTA should administratively do this since it is a requirement by the HTA for us to be members.
ReplyDeleteHTA has always sent out warnings to captains when they have people with no membership. There are a few captains and others (David Hall is exhibit A) who would prefer to win with a protest instead of on the court.
ReplyDeleteI think Red will be rooting hard for Copperfield to lose this weekend. He did all the work to get his ringer Kent to play for his team, and then he got stolen from him!
ReplyDeleteDoes that mean that Adam Kent has declared to play for Copperfield and not NOHO?
ReplyDeleteCaptains are well aware their players need to be members, and so are the players. If someone is not willing to sign up, then they leave themselves wide open for a team to protest them. And we all know how cutthroat summer league is, and what people will do to win.
ReplyDeleteWhat has David Hall protested to get a win?
ReplyDeleteA captain who would protest for not paying some fee is pond scum. Maybe even lower than Red Benzon.
ReplyDeleteCaptains usually suck at tennis and have to use the rule book to try to build up there ego.
HTA is a racist organization that pick on asians.
ReplyDeleteHere is what is going to happen:
ReplyDeleteThe captain that filed the protest will be vilified on the blog and everyone will call him names and bag on him (Similar to David Hall last fall).
In reality two things should have happened:
- The captain of the teams should have confirmed that his players were members PRIOR to putting them in the lineup. Being a captain is like herding cats. This especially applies to the more talented ringers.
Secondly, HTA should have an automated tool that cross-references USTA league to HTA league and auto-notifies the player, the team captain and the league coordinator.
Currently I think all of this is a manual process done by Diana/Cheryl. Time for HTA to get on the information superhighway and using smoke signals for communication.
All of this could have been avoided had the two above things happened.
IMHO, the people that should really be pissed are JCC and Bear Creek because HTA is not going back to league play and forfeiting all of the lines these guys played and this could potentially change the results of the flight standings enough to alter first, second or third place!
Why are we paying a $20 HTA "tax" anyways?
ReplyDeleteThe people in Waco don't have to join the "WTA" to play in a USTA league or NOHO for that matter.
Why is that HTA can levy a tax on their org and create situations like this?
HTA is not a racist organization. Just so happens, the guys from the 4.0 team that got disqualified were Asian, and should have paid their dues like everyone else prior to playing any matches.
ReplyDeleteFyi, Adam Kent is playing for Copperfield this weekend and HTA has verified his eligibility.
ReplyDeletethe copperfield and rice match was not fictionous. copperfield brought their guns to sweep us and that's what they did. most of the players in our team are there for one reason only, and that's to have FUN. 3 of my last 4 losts, i was ahead in either the sets or match, but failed to "put the nail on the coffin". it's my failure for taking my foot off the gas pedal too early or just ran out of gas. yes, i was playing 4.0 last year, and no, i am not the same player last year, last month, nor last week. however, i think i am doing pretty well for someone that only gets to play once a week.
ReplyDeleteas for the playoffs, i am going for copperfield and westside, because they are a cool group of guys. i also have friends on the other teams and hope them the best also.
good luck to all!
wow so it is bad enough that the USTA rapes you with high fees, but HTA forces themselves on you after USTA is done abusing you. That is just plain sad. Dallas and Fort Worth do not force you to be a member of their organization. If I was part of the team with DQ'ed players I might be looking at another District to play in rather than having to pay additional fees. What a crock.
ReplyDeleteTo the blogg above concerning HTA getting on the "superhighway", yes there certainly could be some benefit if from a technology perspective HTA could upgrade but sometimes people easily forget there is a cost for everything and this cost would certainly be passed through to you and me because let's face it, nothing is for free.
ReplyDeleteThat said, it does not change or fix the problem of players being registered properly in order to parcitipate in league play. HTA cannot "make" players register that is why it is incumbant upon the captains to do so. HTA's only "big stick" is to say that if they are not you risk forfieture of any match played if you are not.
Players are ultimately responsible for taking 10 minutes to get signed up and captains are responsible for communicating this to their team players.
All of you should consider yourself lucky that boty Cheryl and Diana even take the time to warn you that you yourself or your players are not registered. This is a courtesy not a requirement of them.
Allen
Thanks Allen for chiming in. Some teams (no names mentioned) feel they are superior to everyone else and above all rules. It is unfortunate to the Chancellors team, but their players being ineligible for the playoffs will set a precedent for future league seasons to come.
ReplyDeletethe HTA fee to play a USTA league is the biggest rip off and should be never a requirement
ReplyDeleteWell, the fee is a requirement so get over it. If you do not like it, you have 3 choices: do not participate, play NOHO, or move out of Houston.
ReplyDeleteAllen, you are right nothing is free but the lookup tool can be done in a perl script behind some HTML in about 3 hours by a confident person.
ReplyDeleteWhoever maintains there dB is severely lacking in capability.
They should really reach out to the community and ask for help or a technology advisory board to guide the IT focus. Shit, people may do it for free out of sympathy or a trade deal for free memberships.
Here is a perfect example of crappy programming:
Has anyone else figured out that whoever wrote the HTA membership software does not have any data validation scheme in place?
Although I am registering as myself (Adult male), I can choose the "junior" box and register as a female and only pay $10 to register on HTA. WTF is that about?
I realize that I may have just cost myself $10 next year, but as a software engineer that really erks me that people write such sloppy code.
Allen, the last poster just volunteered to re write HTA's software. SIGN HIM UP!!!
ReplyDeleteI need to address several points made on here.
ReplyDelete1. Those are not rumors. Red HAS started hormone treatments and will be officially playing on a women's 4.5 team next season.
2. HTA is NOT racist. That has to be the dumbest thing I have ever heard. Go back through recent years and see all of the 'asian' teams that have represented Houston at sectionals. I can think of several mixed team especially.
3. If you don't like the fees, just STFU and go play with yourself. You don't have to play league tennis. If you don't like it, go away. The fees are there to pay for the salaries of the workers and make sure the league is viable. Cheryl and the gang do a heck of a job. Is it a perfect job? No, but its just a freakin game you cheap-ass babies.
If my tennis game was as bad as David Hall's, I would need therapy to boost my ego, filing a protest would not be enough.
ReplyDeleteI just heard that MobSquad had players kicked out too. Maybe it is something against orientals.
ReplyDeleteFor some reason this blog has turned into a B&W session where only the negative aspects are highlighted.
ReplyDeleteHTA does do a good job overall and the events and communication to the captains and players are where it needs to be.
With the playoffs this weekend, let's start talking about tennis again, instead of the idiotic lies about players and the ridiculous comments about the fees HTA charge.
ReplyDeleteAllen's comments are right on. It is the player's responsibility. Don't blame someone at HTA or some captain for pointing it out. The rules are in place. If you don't like the rules, volunteer your time and set about in changing them.
ReplyDeleteyou guys do realize that HTA gets money already from the USTA league fees, so they are double-dipping by charging an additional fee for the HTA. If they want to charge the additional fee then only have HTA tournaments/leagues. Should not be a requirement for those that only want to play USTA. Would the same as if in Atlanta they forced their players to also pay a fee for ALTA membership.
ReplyDeleteJust heard the Hurricanes had some players DQ'd as well.
ReplyDeleteRules are rules. Players all know they are supposed to be members and thats the end of it.
ReplyDeleteWhat about match ups this weekend?
Guys,
ReplyDeleteRegarding HTA fees, trust me when I tell you that HTA nor anyone on the board is getting rich here. All of us VOLUNTEER our time in trying to provide a viable and competitive league. Yes some of those fees are used to pay some people for the day to day work that is involved but HTA is a non-profit organization and other than to cover overhead the remainder goes to scholarships for very deserving kids and NJTL programs to promote tennis within the community and children.
HTA works endlessly to obtain sponsors throughout the year in order to reduce costs for league fees that you and I pay.
I will personally investigate the issue regarding better ways to continue to enforce/inform registration but in the end it is up to each of us to pull the trigger and register.
And for the record I am Asian.
Allen
Predicted finish:
ReplyDeleteGrp1:
1) Kingwood
2) Black Sheep
3) Sssscccwwwwiinnnnnggggg
Grp2
1) Met
2) Copperfield
3) Mobsquad
Finals- Kingwood over Met
Here's who else is DQd. Shame on the Chancellor's captain who spent the countless hours (out of spite) to bring it to the HTA's attention.
ReplyDeleteHurricanes - Jon Evans
Mob Squad - Danny Vu, Paul Nguyen, Tuan Tran
Yeah, Allen is a stealth asian. Why do you think we had him on the Mob Squad last year...it sure wasn't for his backhand! J/K Allen.
ReplyDeleteSeriously, I don't think race had anything to do with our (or Chancellor's) disqualifications. Certainly the blame lies with the players and the captain (I plead guilty).
The Chancellors captain is a spiteful, small man.
ReplyDeleteGreat breakdown of HTA Allen.
ReplyDeleteKARMA is a bad thing.
ReplyDeleteKingwood sucks as does chancelors and that bitch of a capitan they have!
ReplyDeleteHTA president
ReplyDeleteWilliam Mao... hmmm, asian?
The captain who started this whole mess is rumored to be from SAP.
ReplyDeleteThere is nothing new about any of this. Look at this Blog's posting at the beginning of the 2007 season (well over a year ago) when Kingwood had to default several lines against Copperfield at the start of the season. The HTA has been consistent and clear with this rule. Women have players DQ'd all the time using this rule, I'm surprised you genious guys have not figured that out yet.
ReplyDeleteFollow the rules!
I could see that. SAP needs all the help it can get.
ReplyDeleteYea they are an 8-2 team in the weakest flight there is. Good luck in city SAP.
ReplyDeleteThanks for all of your support.
ReplyDeleteSAP is filled with a bunch a great guys as is Chancellors. Just because Chancellor's captains are cry babies doesn't make the rest of the folks on their level.
ReplyDeleteGood luck to SAP and Chancellors.
Greg,
ReplyDeleteFilter the comments.
blogs are a form of freedom of speech. if you start filtering, you are just promoting censorship. there are a few people that get out of hand, but that does not equate to censorship. to the last poster, go live in iran if you want to be censored.
ReplyDeleteThe true nature of Chancellors is coming out. You are lucky the HTA didn't ban your team earlier in the year when you LIED and reported people playing, WHO WERE NEVER THERE!!!
ReplyDeleteI would be embarrased to be part of this team.
I guess I see this blog as about adult recreational league tennis, but not about singling out people and calling them the c-word.
ReplyDeletePretty bad stuff. I personally think that Greg should make people register and post under a username.
Any 4.0 Hurricaines DQ'ed?
ReplyDeleteFreedom of speech does not apply to personal blogs. Anyone who runs a blog can run it in any manner they want. If Greg wants to delete these low life comments then he has the "freedom" to do so.
ReplyDeleteDQ is an unfortunate part of the game, but as it has been said it is in the rules prior to the season.
ReplyDeleteWhile we had players DQ'd, I do not feel it was unjust as it was done unilaterally instead of selectively. It is unfortunate as we could really use Kirk and Roberto, but responsibility lays on us to register.
While I am disappointed, the personal attacks on Cheryl and Diane are unwarranted.
Let's play some tennis.
Hung
Copperfield 4.0
i agree that this is greg's blog and he can run it anyway he wants it. however, you seem to forget what a blog is meant for. there's going to be some yahoo who thinks it's cool to use bad words and make personally attacks. but that's the beauty of a blog is the ability to express your opinions and staying anonymous. the truth is, if this blog gets censored, then it will lose 90% of it's audience.
ReplyDeleteAs the captain of a crappy team that never seems to make the playoffs (but follows all the rules) I'm excited to see these superteams (Chancellors, Hurricanes, Mob Squad) be punished for not following the same rules that my teams have to follow.
ReplyDeleteCongrats the HTA for doing the right thing.
P.S. I must admit, the Chancellors captain filing greivances on people not even in his own NTRP level is sad and pathetic (but it was done against teams I don't like, so great job!)
$20 for HTA fee's is nothing, it pays for the help they provide in HTA leagues that 95% of us play in and if you can't afford it, go play checkers. The HTA is good for Houston and good for tennis. The HTA hardly gets paid as it is, stop being such babies and kicking the people that work hard for our good time. You just might wake up and they will tell us to kiss off. Then everyone loses out. Respect them please.
ReplyDeleteI agree. The personal attacks on Diana and Cheryl are totally uncalled for and pathetic on the part of whoever is doing it. They do a great job and spend a lot of long hours keeping our leagues going.
ReplyDeletePathetic is an understatement. He even filed against the women's teams.
ReplyDeletePoetic Justice if you ask me. Guess Chancellor's couldn't get away with blaming the secretary this time LOL!!
ReplyDeleteA captain filing unjustified protests and or grievances should be banned from league play. He nor his team pays their $20 fees, so it is no big loss to HTA anyway.
ReplyDeleteWow! I just joined this blog for scouting purposes, and I got much more than I was counting on. Way to go H-town tennis.
ReplyDeleteAre you saying Chancellors captain got a lady DQ'd? Why?
ReplyDeleteYes they did, it was my grandmother. She DQ'd from her 3.0 ladies team.
ReplyDeleteNice work Chancellors - way to prove your point.
Isn't Alex Chang the captain of Chancellors, and also a member of the Mob Squad?
ReplyDeleteHow do you find out who has been DQ'ed?
ReplyDeleteLMAO - people posting under "anonymous" are saying the blog should require registration to comment!
ReplyDeletePractice what you preach!
Ask the HTA and they will tell you or read the posts above.
ReplyDeleteI don't know the 4.0 guys but Alex is Known for being Shady in the 4.5s.
ReplyDeleteSorry to hear about your grandma, hope see enjoys talking to her cats this weekend.
ReplyDeleteNot Alex Chang.....surely you jest :)
ReplyDeleteMy Asian grandma got disqualified too. Is that discrimination against Asian old people?
ReplyDeleteSo when a hillbilly (whitey) doesnt sign up for HTA it's cool but when an asian person doesnt they should get disqualified? Look if you guys are more comfortable playing with white sheets over your head, have at it. We would respect you more if you were just open and honest instead of smiling to our faces and filing complaints every other day bc we consistently beat you. Hung shut the fuck up, you don't know shit you moron. FREE MICHAEL VICK!!! ALEX CHANG RULES!!! Lock up ROGER CLEMENS!!!!
ReplyDeleteHoly ...... Wow that was some screed. I hope that poster was being sarcastic? Racism in league play is a new one on me. I guess Alex has replaced Red as the new punching bag on this blog.
ReplyDeleteGlad I don't live in Houston. Go Spurs!
ReplyDeleteIgnorance is bliss...
ReplyDeleteBut please just stop the racist hatred. remember the previous post, HTA president = William Mao.
I had lunch with the man once and if I recall correctly, he was asian... hell, the man was actually born in China, I believe.
The guy who said hillbilly... he prob doesn't win any matches.
ReplyDeletewhat team do you play for HTOWN HACKER ?
ReplyDeleteWell written article.
ReplyDelete
