Someone was nice enough to pass along the Sectionals brackets to me. Perhaps the most interesting thing is that Houston managed to get only one team in the 3.5 bracket. There are 20 teams in the 3.5 bracket, but it appears Houston was unlucky in the Wild Card hunt this year. Even Lubbock got a wild card spot in 3.5. I've forgotten the exact procedure, but the number of entries each city gets "in the hat" is dependent on the number of teams it has at that level. I believe you get one chance for each four teams a city has above the total of four. In other words, a city with 8 teams gets one entry in the hat. Twelve teams get you two, etc. Names are drawn until all wild card slots are filled. Someone please correct me if things have changed or I've misremembered.
The good news is that Houston has two teams in the 4.5 and 4.0 draws this year. There are a few wrinkles to iron out in the 4.5 draw as it hasn't been decided which slot will contain the Houston city champ and which will have the runner up. Regardless, it will take the pressure off of the Sunday afternoon matchups in 4.5 and 4.0 and make that 3.5 city final very pressure-packed.

very insightful Chris...
ReplyDeletescouting reports anyone?
Where can we see the draws for 4.5?
ReplyDeleteI just do it to subscribe to the thread.
ReplyDeleteHard to type a meaningful message and drive down the tollway on the crackberry with all that traffic.
You know how it is.
Safety first!
How about letting us know those draws or where to find them. Best I could do was find the schedule for the QT.
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure they're official yet. I probably shouldn't post them yet. If you have a question about them email me at houstonleaguetennis@gmail.com
ReplyDeleteWow Houston with only one 3.5 team that can go? The pressure is on.
ReplyDeleteSeveral captains with players in multiple leagues have not made their "declarations" to the HTA. The deadline was June 30th. This is an HTA rule and is no different than any other rule which means it is subject to a grievance if not followed.
ReplyDeleteCaptains better make their declarations if they intend to keep their players qualified for the playoffs (this applies to NOHO as well).
I'm sure the declarations are not posted publicly, so how would anyone know other than HTA if players have not declared?
ReplyDeleteDoes that date to declare go for mixed leagues as well? I figured that date would be extended since mixed league started after the men's and women's.
ReplyDeleteMixed League has its own date and it is not June 30th.
ReplyDeleteAlain Tran, I heard you are getting married. are u sure that you are ready for 60 years of bad luck? a few months after marriage, you'll probably have no more sex. you'll have less freedom then Iranians.
ReplyDeleteManlaw
Declaration is not public. You should contact Diane to find out.
ReplyDeleteHa, no doubt! Not sure what I'm getting into, but if the Halls can keep their marriage going then so can we! Just kidding David!

How about some predictions on the 4.0 city play-off. Who's good/bad? And who is going to 4.5 next year?
ReplyDeleteWas Westside BlackSheep 4.5 #1 and Copperfield #2 ?
ReplyDeleteIt looks like Copperfield swept Rice without losing a set last night, moving into first place. Jonathan Magid didn't play for Rice.
ReplyDeleteAlso, Kingwood lost its somewhat meaningless makeup with the Met. Sarosh Ahmed took down Phi Huynh in three sets.
In 4.0 both pools will be decided in Sunday morning matches when Sienna and Met play and Chancellors and Coperfield play. All matches leading into Sunday will be blowouts unless the captains use their scrubs which will turn an otherwise 5-0 win into a 3-2 win.
ReplyDeleteCopperfield will surprise everyone and have a 4.0 and 4.5 team representing them at sectionals.
what were the scores between MET and Kingwood? Did MET actually win?
ReplyDeleteThe Crush used one of the Stevens brothers in singles. Nuf said.
ReplyDeleteI'm sure westside is thrilled that rice mailed it in for the last match and cost them first place. now they have to go through the kingwood side of the city draw. good luck with that.
ReplyDeletekingwood and copperfield are probably the favorites to go to sectionals in 4.5. That met/mob/copperfield section will be interesting
Way to go Rice 4.5 for rolling over, it actually decided the season for your division. It makes the season/playoffs interesting but WS deserved better.
ReplyDeletePredictions:
ReplyDeleteMob Squad 4-1 over Hurricanes
Kingwood 4-1 over Swing
Copperfield 3-2 over Hurricanes
Kingwood 5-0 over Westside
Mob Squad 3-2 over Copperfield
Swing 3-2 over Westside
Kingwood 3-2 over Mob Squad
Predictions:
ReplyDeleteHurricanes 3-2 over Mob Squad
Kingwood 5-0 over Swing
Hurricanes 3-2 over Copperfield
Kingwood 5-0 over Westside
Mob Squad 3-2 over Copperfield
Westside 3-2 over Swing
Kingwood 3-2 over Hurricanes
I just noticed they have the overall schedules on the USTA website.

NOHO players technically don't have to declare. Once it is confirmed that a team is advancing to sectionals, any player on that roster cannot participate in city wide playoffs. They are tied to the NOHO team.
ReplyDelete4.5 group of death:
ReplyDeleteSan Antonio, NOHO, Valley, Austin
nice to see schedule, but find it interesting they do not say which Flight will have Wild Dallas and Wild Houston, maybe done on purpose I assume, would have to assume it will be 1st Houston and 2nd Dallas and vice versa but could be interesting. Group 3 is killer though with Valley, SA, Austin, and NOHO --- Ouch!!!
ReplyDeleteOf course it is done on purpose, especially after those bozos in Austin (women 4.5) tanked a match to end up in a different group two years ago. They had a hearing and all for it. Better safe than sorry.
