There are four matches in 4.0 tonight and a pair of matches in 4.5.
In 4.0 Division I, Copperfield faces SAP and their controversial captain. Interestingly, Captain Goodwin protested the Chancellor's players but didn't complain about the Copperfield team he plays tonight. Copperfield was victimized by Louis Lu from Chancellor's, whose team will face another Asian team, the Smokers, at 7 PM tonight. Cheryl and Diana will have a tough time picking a team to discriminate against in that one! JUST KIDDING! :)
In Division I of 4.0 Lost Forest takes on a Sienna Plantation team that quietly dominated its division in as resounding a fashion as the Huricanes and Chancellor's. Freeman's Hurricane team opens its playoff season against Willow Fork tonight as well.
In 4.5 there are two matchups. Ssshhhwings will try to take one of the singles lines and then count on its reliable doubles teams to try and topple a West Side team that got nosed out of first place in its division and has not gotten much respect by many of the posters here.
Also, there's an intriguing matchup between the 4.5 Hurricanes and a Mob Squad team that is trying to keep its Sectionals streak alive. Most people would give the edge in singles to the Mob and in doubles to the Hurricanes. Both teams wil be trying to prove they're more well-rounded than people think.
P.S. Our readership here is at an all-time high. Controversy is good for business. Please patronize the sponsors. If you've seen (or heard) the car I'm driving, you know I can use a few extra shekels. :)

Should be fun. Let's hope the weather holds out for some tennis.
ReplyDeleteGreg did you not post earlier this year that you had some doubts about losing a match to put your team in the best position to win. So I am not sure why people are dogging Godwin about what he did. He did what he thought was best for his team to win. We all know we would have done the same thing in the past. The question is would a captain have done this last year against Freeman's Hurricanes. I think they would have. Maybe Freeman had some non HTA members, not sure but if they did someone else would have gone to nationals. Just my opinion on a subject that could have been no big deal if people just follow the rules.
ReplyDeleteEvery captain has things he will and won't do. I know that my own moral code is quite twisted and inconsistent. I will admit that I may have tanked many matches, for instance. I don't know if this is technically cheating (Do the USTA rules mandate maximum effort? I don't know.) but most people would say it violates at least the spirit of fair play.
ReplyDeleteBut I personally would not protest another team or player for not paying a fee. I feel it's like being thrown in jail for not paying a fine for an overdue library book. But that's just my own twisted perspective. Daniel Goodwin felt it was the right thing to do (not sure why he didn't do the same to Copperfield though). Louis Lu felt that pointing out all of the noncomplying players on other teams would somehow aid his cause. Maybe he felt it would help get the ruling against him reversed. Who knows?
I think I was mistaken in thinking that the Copperfield guys were nabbed by Louis. Captain Goodwin protested them and I apologize for implying that he was inconsistent.
ReplyDeleteAdd another twist to what is said above: if a captain had not protested the non paying HTA players (unfortunately out of spite to some), should HTA administratively done it the day of the City Playoffs? If HTA did not enforce it, why is it fair to the other paying HTA members that these guys/gals are able to participate?
ReplyDeleteI think enough has been said about the paying/non paying members of HTA. Unfortunate for the teams that had players DQed, but the guys that were DQed are long time league players.
They do it at sectionals.
ReplyDeleteSue (or representative) sits down and clarifies which players are ineligible and why.
This still goes back to the captain and lack of leadership and responsibility.
There is a major difference between what Goodwin did and what Lu did. Goodwin protested players he was directly competing against (i.e., 4.0 players in his own pool) while Lu protested people he had no possibility of competing against (i.e., men and women at other NTRP levels). Goodwin was being a good captain while Lu was being a baby.
ReplyDeleteI am now a SAP fan.
I'm going to eat Bon Bons in preparation for my match this evening.
ReplyDeleteIt must be discrimination or maybe because those guys are cheap asses and they should of paid.
ReplyDeleteWhy would Sue have any responsibility for rather or not the Houston team players are HTA members? That should be done locally, and players should not be allowed to participate at the local level (ex. Godwin and Lu protesting this year)
ReplyDeleteI guess I was not clear about my Sue comment.
ReplyDeleteSue simply goes over eligibility b/c of red flag DQ's and not played enough times, etc.
She does not get involved with local league stuff like the HTA membership.
I think a better question is: If Chancellor's (for example) DOES manage to advance to Sectionals (it's definitely possible with the talent they still have remaining), does the HTA membership requirement still hold? Can Jonathan Hao Nguyen and others rejoin the team up there?
ReplyDeleteBeing that every participant in local league play is required to pay the HTA fee, it is not discriminatory. It just so happens, all the guys that were disqualified from the Chancellors team were Asian. However, some of the others were not. They were just cheap asses and didn't feel it was important. Honestly, it is really assinine to hear people say that HTA is being racist.
ReplyDeletePersonal opinion in regards to Chancellors: no, they should not be allowed to participate at Sectionals because they did not meet the local league requirements that allows them to get there.
ReplyDeletePeople make excuses and throw in the race card when they can't play and win.
ReplyDelete4.5 Tonight
ReplyDelete3-2 Met over Mob
3-2 Westside over Swinggg
If you check the stats all the Asian teams win the majority of their matches. And we haven't been playing most of our lives like you country club trust fund inbreeding bastards. We beat whiteboys for fun!!
ReplyDeletei'm asian and i grew up with white people. and never had real asian friends until after high school. from my experience between the two groups, asians take care of each other, and whites look after their own interest first. as for the HTA, i don't think it's racially motivated, but more favortism
ReplyDeleteI do my best to dispel the previous posters racist stereotypes, of anglo country club tennis players, by breeding with as many hot Asian chicks as I can.
ReplyDeleteGreg, can you ban stupid people like the poster who said "inbreeding bastards" or is he on your team?
ReplyDeleteReading all these idiotic comments about race, obscenities, and overall derogatory comments is an embarrassment and is a horrible reflection of the moral character of many of the players or better players in our league. Do you kick your dog for fun too? Grow up and show your integrity by making constructive or positive statements. Tennis is supposed to be a sport filled with class, not crass.
ReplyDeleteis crass a word?
ReplyDeleteRacism? Favoritism? All the commentors posting those things are a horrible reflection of what Houston league tennis has become and just how childish adult men and women can be. Rules are rules, they apply to all people: white, asian, black, latin etc.
ReplyDeleteSo the rules don't apply to the great Sarosh?
ReplyDeleteWhy you hatin' in the Indian players?
the great sarosh invented the sport of tennis. he is exempt.
ReplyDeleteGreg - a friendly word of advice. Remove the reference to Google in your post. They monitor "ad-pimping" and will suspend your account. It happened to me and I had to go back and remove all "pleas" I made on my site which was a pain in the ass.
ReplyDeleteThanks. Btw, I don't have the ability to ban anyone. I can sometimes figure out the IP address of a commenter, but that's about it. I try to only delete personal attacks. I'm sure I delete things I shouldn't, and vice versa.
ReplyDeleteWho will win in 4.5 tonight?
ReplyDeleteMob (Fat Asian Guys) vs. Met (Inbreeding Bastards)?
what would be the probable line ups for MOB Squad and MET tonite? Any guesses?
ReplyDeleteMOB - Singles
ReplyDeletevs
MET - Singles
lets keep our focus on tennis and bashing each others tennis prowess, otherwise I am forced to call Quanell X
ReplyDeleteSingles:
ReplyDeleteMOB - Hasker, Steve Phan, Puma
vs
MET - Ahmed, Mills, Rios
Chang(MOB) vs Freeman (MET)
ReplyDeleteDefinately a heavyweight battle
ReplyDeleteWhat is the rain plan?
ReplyDeleteSeems like the singles matches would be really interesting!
ReplyDeleteMET vs MOB....WOW!!!
Copperfield was smart to win their division bc Kingwood already beat the Met and Mob is not as good as it once was.
ReplyDeleteThe HTA fee issue comes up every year. It just shouldn't be a surprise to the veteran captains and players.
ReplyDeleteIt's laziness to not pay the fee, it takes just a few minutes.
And yes, it's the captain's job to make sure his team is in compliance.
Period, end of story.
Singles:
ReplyDeleteMOB - Hasker, Steve Phan, Puma
vs
MET - Ahmed, Mills, Rios, Yang
My guess is Phan & Hasker for MOB, and Yang and Mills for MET.
What are the doubles lines?
Mob Squad people are not used to presure matches any more. They haven't played leagues or tournaments for two or three years not even HTA leagues. They will not handle this level of competition.
ReplyDeleteI reckon I should pay those god dumb fees but I've never paid no dang HTA fees in my life and I ain't never been disqualifiied. But my wife/sister(same person) said I ain't have to and she works for HTA. We can talk about this later after tonight's weekly KLAN meeting. See yall at the Waffle House
ReplyDeleteDoubs:
ReplyDeleteMet - Vernon, Yang, Yannuzzi, Chec, Regent, Hunckler, and Stanich
Mob - Chang, Steve Phan, Puma, Minh Phan, Vu, Pham, Lieu, Tran
What are the probable line ups for Westside vs. Ssshhhwing?
ReplyDeleteBilly Bob, can the Asian's join your KLAN meeting bc they want to know how to get by without paying their HTA dues.
ReplyDeleteI'm eating Bon Bons while comtemplating my match this evening.
ReplyDeleteThe White/Asian thing is getting out of hand. Let your racquet do the talking this evening. Still eating Bon Bons.
ReplyDeleteI agree that we should probably drop all this craziness about race.
ReplyDeletePS If you want to see a nice Asian/Caucasian mix check out Sienna Plantation. We even have a stellar mixed race doubles team in Ronnie Kwan/Scott Boarman playing on our team (eating bon-bons each change over).
If we win tonight, expect it to come through the doubles (has anyone seen this Chris Trevino guys record 8-0 at #1 singles?).
I looked up Trevino a while back. If memory serves, he was a superchamp when he was 14 or so. I believe he's only about 19 now. His results are impressive.
ReplyDeleteHow does Mob Squad losing Danny Vu, Paul Nguyen, and Tuan Tran affect their chances?
ReplyDeleteNoticed the above Mob doubs line up would include Vu and Tran
ReplyDeleteWhy did Mob Squad lose the above listed players?
ReplyDeleteNot paying HTA dues
ReplyDeleteI tried paying my HTA dues this year and the website was jacked up for 2 weeks. it's just a poor site with bad navigation.
ReplyDeletethat is so wrong
ReplyDeleteGreg, PLEASE delete this crap
The racial comments need to stop.
ReplyDeletepeople dont make fun of sarosh cuz he's indian you idiot, they make fun of him because he brings it on himself. understand the difference.
ReplyDeletethank you
ReplyDeleteJustin dont worry about Trevino. Ben will win and you guys will carry the doubles.
ReplyDeleteScott is Caucasian?
ReplyDeleteTo get more off topic is anyone planning on leaving LLTC tonight and head over to the Apple store to camp out to get a phone?
ReplyDeleteJustin Smith, you are my hero. You will win this evening.
ReplyDeletesarosh is indian? i thought he was hispanic.
ReplyDeleteI think Freeman will throw a curve ball and put Mills in doubles with Vernon. It looks like those guys play together a lot. That would put Rios and singles and Sarosh in singles.
ReplyDeleteGreg, make registration mandatory and install a comment filter - it's pretty simple to do. If you have a repeat violator, delete their account or restrict their IP.
ReplyDeletewho are u, the president of iran?
ReplyDeleteLets get ready to rumble!
ReplyDeleteLooks like MOB will be short-handed tonight.
ReplyDeleteRed - commited to NOHO
Herb - commited to NOHO
Danny - DQed
Paul - DQed
Tuan - DQed
Tam & Greg - may not be available if they declared to play on the 4.0 team.
Greg, have you declared for which team you will play in the playoffs - 4.0 or 4.5?
I declared for 4.0. I'm hoping Freeman's recruiting skills will finally carry me to Nationals.
ReplyDeleteSmitty, whoever you are, you are MY HERO. Scott is Caucasian? I hope to see Glenn play on Saturday even though he suffers from chronic priapism. Uncle Ben, great effort out there tonight. Director Miss C, nice outfit, close match. Way to swing your thunderstick! Dean, nice rash. T. Dang, nice girth on your lens. I am looking forward to Sat for the Clash of the Titans.
ReplyDeleteWho is Glenn?
ReplyDeleteAnna Kournikova
Who is Smitty?
ReplyDeleteMartina Navratilova
Who is Dean, rash?
ReplyDeleteRenee Richards
Who is Miss C?
