Copperfield!

Add Copperfield to the list of teams that can make some noise in the 4.5 city playoffs. The playoff divisions may not be as imbalanced as I had originally thought. Copperfield blanked the mighty Westside Black Sheep last night, and put out a lineup that could raise the eyebrows of playoff teams' captains. New member Alex Bergmann arrived on the scene at Copperfield a week or so ago, and had captains whipping out their pens to sign up the unrated foreign import. League captains have to wonder how good this guy is. John Kudrick played number two singles yesterday and waxed Murray Fonseca. Kudrick must be back in good health, and I guarantee that nobody wants to see him on the other side of the net in the playoffs. Add Bryan Robins back into the mix...Michael Letan has made great improvements over the last several years and is now a very tough out as well. His doubles record this year is impressive. David McMullan has been better in doubles than singles...Copperfield could be tough!

Other 4.5 news is scarce at this time. The Mob Squad beat Lost Forest 4-1. John Wilkerson and Greg Bowen won for Lost Forest while Thang Pham dominated Daniel Kallus on the singles court. The Hurricanes 4.5 team had no trouble with Westside's other team, sweeping the match 5-0. Only Hal Hale managed a set as he extended Don Rios to three.

In 4.0, the big matchup was between JCC Dudes and Chancellor's. No official score has been reported, but rumor has it that Chancellor's swept. Impressive. In other news on the Chancellor's front, I've heard a rumor that the protest against them will be denied. Several people have assured me that Lewis, who runs the Chancellor's team, is a standup guy and would never do what has been alleged. In the absence of any proof, it's difficult to sanction anyone. I agree with many posters who say that something needs to be done to keep league tennis on the level.

In other 4.0 news, Copperfield has quietly dominated its competition this year, winning 36 of the 40 lines it has played. Nobody is paying them any attention, but it definitely looks like the 4.0 playoffs will have some depth and few breathers, unlike in some past years. Also, the Hurricanes 4.0 team defaulted a line but still managed a 4-1 win over the second place Smokers.

In 5.0, Lost Forest kept rolling on. Robert Bickmore took down Tor Krosby and the number one doubles tandem of Taylor and Bello took down Ballesteros and Sombito.

  2. Mike Letan has definitely improved his game.

He has been doing quite abit of cross-training, which has helped. Most of you are unaware that Mike Letan also does ballet. Unfortunately pics cannot be attached.

    Good win Copperfield.

  3. Thanks for the compliment! I had great partners that carried me. Check out who I've played with: Robins, McMullan, Kudrick, Kent, Salinas. Need I say more?

  5. No pics please, but good job Copperfield.

And to the comment about Westside taking it easy, give me a break. Give Copperfield some credit on their win. Takin it easy is not getting blanked 5-0.

  6. Just Looked at Kudrick's single record from last Year and he beat Antonio Garza a legitimate 5.0 and also beat Hunter Emmott who is rated a 6.0 according to tennis link. He was formerly a 5.5 then to get bumped down a whole level is ridiculous and this is what Usta promotes. What a JOKE for him to be eligible to play 4.5. Director of Tennis at Copperfield formerly 5.5 National Player playing 4.5. We should let Stephen Coyle and Hunter Emmott play too so they can be really stacked. Letan will not be a Factor.

  7. I'll take Hunter as my partner. Let me know how I can get him in.

  8. Coyle wouldn't make the Copperfield 4.5 team. He'd be a solid line 5 doubles player on that team.

  9. Blah Blah Blah! Is this PMS Time of the Month League? Man, you cry like a little beeeoootttccchhhhh. If you're going to gripe, at least state something that is relevant. You sound like a broken record! If you post something like that, put a signature to it! Anyone who has played in this league knows what kind of different competition we get. You sound like a virgin to this playing field. Quit whining or go play with the 3.0 league. They can sympathize with you easier.

  12. Copperfield can still easily win the division and avoid playing Kingwood in their pool. They need to bring out the big boys for their remaining matches. Then things will be very interesting.

  13. copperfield will play LLTC next week and should win 5-0. after that, they will play Rice. should be interesting, since most of the Rice players only play home games. Rice 3-2.

  14. Anyone heard of what happened with Chancellor's 4.0 team? Did they get DQed?

    ReplyDelete
  15. They should be DQ'ed...

  16. Chancellor's blamed it on the Secretary.

    ReplyDelete
  17. What? Secretary? Is USTA/HTA taking any action?

    1) Defaulting the lines in question?

    2) DQing the disputed match?

    3) DQ from League?

    4) Ban from playoffs?

Item 2 makes the most sense as the should forfeit the entire match as 5-0 loss. This deception allowed them play everyone at different lines.

  18. If this thing with Chancellors indeed happened, it is wrong, and should not be happening. However, you captains out there know GOOD and WELL, that you have not always played by the rules. You have done things like this, similar to this, or far WORSE than this to benefit your team before, so stop being such hypocrites with this one particular incident.

IF this happened, I certainly do not condone these practices, BUT, there are so many hypocritical comments on here coming from people who KNOW they have not always done things by the book for the sole reason of benefiting your team, and it is THOSE people who are doing the most complaining. AMAZING how it works!

So, get off your pedestal, stop your whining and complaining, and let the HTA/USTA do what they have to do. Especially the EXTREMELY hypocritical posters on here. You are a JOKE!
