The HTA Houston Open (I think that's what it's called nowadays) draws have been released. I quickly glanced at the early round match ups. Those I will be keeping my eye on:
In 4.0 men's singles the second round match between Tuyen Nguyen and Cuong Truong.
In 4.5 men's singles these first round matches: Coyle-Miles, Schmucker-Abshire, and Guy-McMullen.
Discuss.
There's a guy named Ty Cobb in the Open Men's singles.

Why isn't Ted Puma seeded?
ReplyDeleteIf Coyle is serving well he could take down J.D. but unfortunately he's the kind of player that gets in his own way. Miles wins in 3. Abshire vs. Schmucker is a complete toss up. Truly 50/50 on that one. Guaranteed 3 setter. Lastly David Guy will take down McMullen in straight sets.
ReplyDeleteI assume the winner of Tuyen and Cuong will be knocking Kallus out of the 4.0 draw. Both league veterans likely too strong for mentally-frail DK. Who will Salinas be needing to worry about?
ReplyDelete4.5 - Coyle will not beat a decent 4.5 player in non-shortend sets.. He hits good, but cannot put it together mentally.. After seeing the draw, Schmucker will probably drive straight to Galveston to go fishing instead of taking the Scott St. exit off I-45 South - then will ask for his money back from Cheryl because she should have been seeded in the top 4.. Guy should prevail and be able to cost to the semis.. Morales and Bui should also be a good match.. All houston 4.5's should do well this year.. And thanks hta for scheduling 8am matches on Friday, then not play until 8am saturday.. then having finals at 8:30 on monday morning..
ReplyDeleteMens Open - Adrian valdez will beat Ronnie Johnson 0 and 0.. Golden set possibility?? Patch vs. Reginald Black.. Patch might finally get more than 2 games in a set in an open draw.. Ted will win first round, but have a tough 2nd match.. Not many big names in open the last few years..
Kallus will be the winner of Tuyen Cuong. He's playing well and winning Bucaneer Days proves he's mentally tough enough.
ReplyDeleteCoyle has some really good tournament wins already this year. He beat David McMullen at lost forest and Keith Briscoe from Austin at San Antonio. his serve is huge. Not sure why one would think he can't beat a decent 4.5 since he's proven he can.
ReplyDeleteI cannot see Kallus winning two majors in a row, even at 4.0. Had the guy ever won any tournament that mattered prior to Corpus? Either that was a fluke or 4.0 must be incredibly weak this year.
ReplyDeleteI think Schmucker will actually play this one. He has had success against Abshire in the past, though the match will likely be a 4 hour moon ball fest. Guy should do well. 4.0s - Kallus just maybe, otherwise I would have to say the field is open as no one really stands out. Question will be whether Kallus can keep his head together and not get distracted bitching about the courts at Mem park. Will there ever be a 5.0 draw again or has the level been officially retired out of respect for Tim Green not having the time to play any more?
ReplyDeleteI would watch out for a few sleepers in the Men's 4.5 draw. Both singles and doubles. Don't go betting on a sure thing.
ReplyDeleteIs there any standout player who could make an impact in league this season? Looking at the 4.0 draw the level has dropped a substantial amount in my opinion.
ReplyDeleteThe Houston Open has some nice 4.0 tournament players in it but I don't think there is really anyone that would be considered a standout in league. Houston 4.0 league should be down this year but 4.5 league will be fantastic and up for grabs.
ReplyDeleteAny chance of Houston 4.0 team getting back to Nationals?
ReplyDeleteThere are some big sleepers in 4.5 draw
ReplyDeleteWho are the top 4.0 guys in this "weaker" year's crop? I assume they are 4.5 drop-downs from last year. Any of these guys still available for league?
ReplyDeletePaul Wittorf will be a asset to any team at 4.0.
ReplyDeleteNever heard of him. Singles, doubles? Older guy, younger?
ReplyDeleteThere are two former 5.0 players in the 4.0 draw. Neither are seeded. Sleepeers for sure!
ReplyDeleteThere are a few sleepers in the 4.5 draw that could certainly do some damage. May not be usual contenders this year in singles or doubles.
ReplyDeletedel campo may win it again, unless JD pulls off an upset....
ReplyDeleteLacy and Davidson won the dubs last year. They will be a tough out again this year.
ReplyDeleteWu and Truong won the Fall Fest 4.0 dubs last year and should win 4.0 dubs easily this weekend.
ReplyDeleteFreeman will recruit Wu and Truong for the Summer 4.0 team if they win.
ReplyDeleteYou are hearing it here first, Kallus will lose 1st round to Tomas Huynh. Huynh has already beaten him once before in 2008 league. Expect a repeat.
ReplyDeleteFreeman will never recruit trash like Wu and Trung. He has told several people Santiago and Dornbos will win with relative ease (if nobody kills Adrian for his horrible line calls).
ReplyDeleteI just noticed Tuan Tran is playing 4.0 doubles in the tournament. He (and Bao) will easily win the whole thing and they will embarrass Santiago and Dornbos along the way. Tuan and Bao woul do well in the 4.5 draw.
ReplyDeleteKallus will crush Huynh.
ReplyDeleteWinners:
ReplyDelete4.0S - Kallus or Salinas
4.0D -Tran/Hangoc
4.5S - Guy
4.5D - Lacy/Davidson
Tran and Hangoc lost to Wu last year in the playoffs. Tran is out of shape and his partner can't play outdoors. That combined with the shady line calls from Team Freeman will be enough to set off the big boy.
ReplyDeleteLacy and Davidson won't win it this year. The top half of the draw is loaded. They have a very tough 2nd round match against Ed Brady and Greg Rychlick. Johnson and Swanson should breeze thru the bottom of the draw but whoever comes out of the top will be battle tested for sure.
ReplyDeleteWho's the favorites in mix?
ReplyDeleteWe were both wrong. Hunyh did not win and Kallus definitely did not crush. Not an impressive and definitely not a favorite to win this one, regardless of how he did in Corpus. Salinas much more impressive in his match. Kallus will be unlikely to make it past his 8am match tomorrow. Salinas will keep coasting.
ReplyDeleteLacy and Davidson out in 1st round and a $200 racket in the garbage can!
ReplyDeleteOf the seeds in 4.0, Kallus had the toughest time getting through today. Most others coasted, based on the lack of blowouts there did not appear to be any unknowns that look to pose big problems, except Strickland.
ReplyDeleteKallus has a tougher draw but I still think he can win. All 3 of Kallus possible oppenents could beat Salinas he has the easier draw.
ReplyDeleteKallus does not help himself by tanking points and trying to stretch out games as long as possible. I know he could win point and games a lot quicker by going for a winner earlier instead of trying to win by attrition. To each his own. Definitely has the hardest draw of any of the seeds. His first round opponent could have done some real damage in a different section of the draw.
ReplyDeleteDwyer is a Nazi
ReplyDeleteWhere are all the David Guy dick suckers today? Can you say over rated?
ReplyDeleteSo much for Zachary and Coyle as the no. 1 seeds. They got knocked out by Paul and Nilekani.
ReplyDeleteSo which teams will now ask mcmullan, coyle, and schmucker on their teams since they are the last from Houston left in the main draw? What happened to David guy?
ReplyDeleteMcmullan always plays on Copperfield. He is having a great tournament and is showing the young guys he's still got the goods. Coyle is actually playing how he has always played. He gives 110% and it has paid off. Schmucker has a way of smashing that little yellow ball and right now has found a zone. Guy had an off tournament and that happens to all of us.
ReplyDeletewho's in the semifinals MOS? Site's not updated. TD don't answer their phone.
ReplyDeleteCongrats to Salinas for taking Kallus down easily in straights. Up 2-1 now head to head and no problem with Kallus when he is not worn out from playing both singles and doubles.
ReplyDeleteHahah come on kallus tanked to salinas. It obvious if you watch their match.
ReplyDeleteThere's a difference between tanked and meltdown.
ReplyDeleteLooked to me more like a tank job that segwayed into a meltdown as I assume they were arguing at the end based on the fact that I saw 2 officials standing by the net as they finished. Kallus is hard to figure when he actually trying or not. One point real good, next shot something really stupid. No matter what happened, good job to Salinas and good luck in finals.
ReplyDeleteDon't think they were arguing. Loud and distracting, yes, but it looked more like joking around to me. Glad they were done before we went on court.
ReplyDeleteCongrats to Schmucker for a good return to tourney play and to JD Miles for his smoking hot lady friend.
ReplyDeleteThe way he has been running through everyone at the HTA MZ, did anyone ever stop to think that maybe Salinas let Kallus have the match in Corpus? Just saying, Mike seems to have pretty consistently pasted his opponents this year while Kallus has struggled in some of his match wins. Maybe Salinas knew he was too tired from singles and doubles in Corpus and tanked it to give Kallus a false sense of confidence when they met in the much more important Houston tournament, which he obviously shattered with with a sound semifinal beatdown yesterday.
ReplyDeleteGuess you didn't watch the match between Kallus and Salinas yesterday then. Kallus got screwed on two bad calls from Salinas which caused the arguing. Kallus was also telling other players during the Lost Forest Tournament that he was going to TANK his match in the final against Salinas BEFORE the match was even going to be played. So don't kid yourself Kallus makes the decision if he will let Mike win or lose. Kallus does not want to get bumped up to 4.5 next year.......why do you think he is not playing summer USTA league it's because he does not want to get bumped up.
ReplyDeleteMike and I were not arguing. At least I don't think we were. Every thing is fine. He won the match and I hope he does well today in the finals. And I agree with the post below this one...I am not good, and I am ok with that.
DeleteDK
People are talking like Kallus is actually good or something. He's not.
ReplyDeleteWhy do people talk about 4.0? Give me a break.......what a boring division.
ReplyDeleteI heard Red took his talent to La Bare in Austin.
ReplyDeleteOther then Red's talent, which team is the favorite due to their talented roster?
ReplyDeleteI agree - bunch of drama queens in 4.0. Talk of tanking is so tired. Play your matches, report your scores and shut the f up.
ReplyDeleteI saw a lot of retirements in scores this weekend. Was everyone cramping?
ReplyDeleteRobert Collins is a strong player to consistently win tournaments the way he does.
Chancellors did very well with Tran/Hangoc winning 4.0 doubles and Le getting deep in singles. That's 2 lines already for summer league for them.
ReplyDeleteWhat about Copperfield with Salinas?
ReplyDeleteCopperfield will have a good team but dont know if they will have the depth needed.
ReplyDeleteWhat if they had both Salinas and Kallus for singles and maybe one more new strong doubles player?
ReplyDeleteThen its a good thing to have Salinas to make up for having Kallus!
ReplyDeleteThe 4.0 doubles was horrible, it was a match laced with unforced errors. I don’t recall 4.0 doubles being so bad.
ReplyDeleteWasn't Kallus the Journeyman who had the tennis tourney blog awhile back? He needs to bring it back since everyone likes him.
ReplyDelete4.0 doubles was terrible. One of the guys was screaming like a little bitch after each of his miserable shots. In spite of how bad he sucked, his team still won. I guess that means that the other team sucked even more!
ReplyDeleteI agree if the fat guy at 4.0 doubles was the best player on the court, that is horrible tennis.
ReplyDeleteWhy all the talk about 4.0 tennis. It puts me to sleep so boring
ReplyDeleteIt looks like the league divisions are out. Nothing very exiting.
ReplyDeleteIf you don't like 4.0, talk about something else. No one is stopping you. If I play 4.0, then I will probably talk about 4.0 because it is not boring to me. 4.5 is boring to me since I do not know who any of the players are.
ReplyDeleteA good 4.0 can beat half the 4.5 guys.
ReplyDeleteA 4.5 who is playing 4.0 because he is scared to play at 4.5 can probably beat half the 4.5 guys.
ReplyDeleteHow about a new topic about the upcoming summer league and your analysis of the team to beat HTown.
ReplyDeleteI will try to get on that soon. I have not played a single set of tennis in the last 8 months, so my knowledge is even more limited than usual this year as I've not come into contact with many people. So forgive any ignorant statements I may make.
ReplyDeleteBabu and Sienna will rock this Summer!
ReplyDelete4.5
ReplyDeletediv1
ssshhwings and copperfield
div2
canes and blast
div3
lakeside and titans
div4
blacksheep and nwo
It is tough to make predictions when we all know that many of these teams are still signing up yet to be known players. There could be some surprises.
DeleteDeucebags and Chancellors are not on that list?!?! Are you kidding me?!? Blacksheep got a cake walk division.
ReplyDeletewho's playing singles for dbag? chancellors have the same guys from last year. only standout is hung
ReplyDeletei don't see lakeside being good unless they replace ed hess. tommy and glen should win, but who else. titan and chancellor are prob the favorite in that division. i see david hall switch teams this year. he's no longer playing for swinggg?
ReplyDeleteThere are two David Hall's in the Houston area. The older one that plays doubles, still, for Swingg, and the younger one that plays singles that plays for deutchbags.
Deletechancellors didnt make it to city playoffs last year. they were all hype and j.bui got destroyed by taylor twice. the doubles team are all at the same level. bunch of 4.0 bump ups and mid-level 4.5 doubles players. i do agree that titans will make play-offs only if sydney plays for them
ReplyDeleteWhat about 3.5 predictions?
ReplyDeleteif the young david hall is playing for d-bags, then i would put dbags and copperfield in div1.
ReplyDeletehow did sydney get from 5.5 in the fall then bumped down to 4.5, without tanking a match? can someone explain that?
ReplyDeleteWhy don't you ask the computer? Many people got bumped down who shouldn't have. Many people didn't get bumped up who should have. It is amazing to me that the computer isn't regulated by TTA better.
ReplyDeleteHow would you recommend that TTA "regulate" the computer better? Shouldn't the computer be neutral, and let the tankers regulate their ratings?
ReplyDeleteHonestly, we complain about TTA, then ask that they regulate the computer/system. How does that scenario work?
first week is going to interesting
ReplyDeletediv1
copperfield vs dbags ---dbags win 3-2
div2
canes vs big bangers ---canes win 4-1
div3
chancellors vs titans ----titans win 3-2

zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
Oh geez, Sydney used to brag on tennis warehouse talk tennis about his pro career, and now he's playing 4.5 USTA ?
ReplyDeleteHe will be 4.0 in 2013
ReplyDeleteif sydney and simon plays for titans, which they mostlikely will. i think the only way chancellors will win is having hung play sydney and james play simon. as for doubles, i'm sure they can at least pull off one win, otherwise it's going to be a long season for chancellors.
ReplyDeleteThe team to beat is Black Sheep this season. Everyone else is playing for 2nd place. Including the Hurricanes.
ReplyDeleteHurricaines 4.0 and 4.5 both suck this year. Team Twilight and Ace Kings all the way to nationals.
ReplyDeleteTwilight??? Why don't they just call themself team fairy.
ReplyDeleteWho is gonna pick up Kallus in 4.0's?
ReplyDeletelotz has already signed up with titans. i'm assuming sydney, simon, and day will probably sign next. that's a strong 4 already. ace kings will have their season end early. vu signed up for ace kings, but he got spanked by lotz 2,2 last year. vu will be more affective playing line 2 dubs.
ReplyDeleteHung P, James Bui,Huy Nguyen,Charles Nguyen can match up with anyone in the 4.5 league. Ace Kings will win 4-1 or an easy 3-2. I hear they turn the heat up in those indoor courts come match time.
ReplyDeleteLooks like Baer signed up with titans also. He probably wont do damage in singles but he's a great doubles player. If they get a few more top notch 4.5s ace kings and lakeside will be in trouble.
ReplyDeleteBest doubles team in the league is still Wright/Connell. No competiton for them. Who is the Ed Hess of the league this year?
ReplyDeleteHurricanes have the open doubles finalist from HTA tournament Mussenden on their roster. Some stiff competiton this year boys.
ReplyDeleteBlack Sheep have all their 5.0 bump downs from last year in tact. They've also added Juan Muhala.
ReplyDeleteRistau will still find a way to lose with a good roster.
ReplyDeleteBlack Sheep need a new captain or Ristau need to sit in key matches.
DeleteRistau couldn't even captain his team into Sectionals a few years ago in a rubber match against Alain Tran's team. All they had to do is win and they couldn't do that against a sorry Dushbag team.
DeleteMussenden prefers to be called "The Moose".
ReplyDeletethe marquis doubles matchup will be lotz/baer vs connell/wright.
ReplyDeleteHung P, James Bui,Huy Nguyen,Charles Nguyen is their top guns? That doesnt compare to:
Day, Sydney, Simon, Lotz.
It looks like Sugar Creek is the favorite this year. Black Sheep has a good team, but again they don't seem to make it to Dallas. It doesn't look good for Swing, Lakeside, and Chancellor. I'm going to pick Hurricane and Sugar Creek going to Dallas this year.
ReplyDeleteWho are the Top 4.0 teams?
ReplyDeleteHurricanes,Chancellors,Lakeside..
ReplyDeleteRosters are still yet to be filled on many teams. Way too early to make assumptions.
ReplyDeletehurricanes, chancellors, lakeside have been recruite all year. so pretty much all the good players are taken. so it's a good assumption
ReplyDeleteLOL. The best 4.0 guys haven't signed up yet. J/k about the best, but I do agree rosters are still filling up.
ReplyDeleteWord on the street is that Freddie is at River Oaks recruiting.
ReplyDeletelakeside just picked up frank edwards. impressive singles record, not much for doubles. div3 is going to be wild
ReplyDeleteso do the top 2 from each division go to playoffs?
ReplyDeleteHas Babu committed to play anywhere?
ReplyDeleteIsn't Babu a 4.0? He dominated 3.5 last year.
ReplyDeleteYes, Babu is 4.0 with 5.0 quickness.
ReplyDeleteBabette plays better.
ReplyDeletebabu has a bigger dick
ReplyDeleteHas anyone seen Babu play?
ReplyDeleteHe plays out of Sienna Plantation. Nice guy. Really a 3.5 though.
ReplyDeletecoyle signed up for titans. that's another solid singles or doubles line. initally i was picking titans 3-2 over chancellors, but it's looking more like 5-0 sweep.
ReplyDeleteGood Guys 4.0 don't look bad. Brandon Mei, "SandwichBlaster", Ed Kiss, Andrew Martin, and a few other solid players, I expect to see them at least make the playoffs.
ReplyDeleteSo how many teams get into City Playoffs in 4.0/4.5?
ReplyDeleteDoes sandwichblaster have a real name?
ReplyDeleteHas anyone tried to use the updated HTA website? Can't figure out if it is trying to replicate a bad drug experience or was done on a bad drug experience...
ReplyDeleteHTA website isn't the best. You would figure with all the dues they collect it could be better.
ReplyDeleteThey keep all the web design, t-shirt design, money in house. The CTA of the year is one big conflict of interest.
ReplyDeleteZZZZ... Borrriiinnnggg. ZZZZ...
ReplyDeletethis blog is falling way behind.
ReplyDeletewho's the creator of this blog?
is he asleep?
why are we still talking about the draw?
