We have arrived in sunny Tuscon and play our first match this morning against the Intermountain team from Idaho, followed by a match against the Northern Section winner from Minnesota. Tomorrow we will face Florida and New England. There's really no way to tell at this point which of those teams will be the strongest, though I would guess Florida would be your best bet.
Some of us went out and scrimmaged with some of the guys from the Pacific Northwest team today, and I think we would do well against them in a real match. There's quite a big difference in the way the ball carries in the thin air here compared to the humid air of Houston.
I will try to update as much as possible.

Hurricane 4.0 win their 1st match 5-0. Keep it going guys!!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the update. Win it all, guys!
ReplyDeleteThere are a lot of bad players out there at Nationals. I'm sure there will be some really good teams, but so far I must say I'm not that impressed overall.
ReplyDeleteArata and Alex Pham had a tough match, winning 14-12 in the third set breaker.
We play Northern next...it will be their first match, so we didn't get a chance to scout them. No idea what to expect.
We won the second match 5-0 as well. It may change, but so far the competition is not as stiff as City Playoffs.
ReplyDeleteThe late match with New England tomorrow will probably be a winner-take-all with the winner making the semis.
I don't know what is going on with the food in tuscon. I've already pooped like 6 times and my roommate like 5. Our toilet doesn't have a vent.....
ReplyDeleteOur toilet doesn't flush!
ReplyDeleteAnother 5-0 win for the canes. Winner take all match against new england at 5:30 our time.
ReplyDeleteIn three matches Canes have used 6 different singles players. Talk about depth. Two of New England's singles players have played 2 of their 3 matches. Fatigue could make a difference.
ReplyDeleteNG
Oops one has played twice and the other has played all three times. That coukd really make a difference.
ReplyDeleteNG
Evidently not, Canes lost both singles - but won all three doubles! Onward to Sunday.

let's go hurricanes!!! on to poo #9....
ReplyDeleteToo much Mescan food in Tuscon.
ReplyDeleteJoe Graham and Carlos Quijano again provided the clutch, clinching win in our 3-2 win over New England. I've been guilty of underselling our team in the past (I try my best to keep our guys from getting overconfident), but I really thought we were gonna' waltz past New England today. It was tougher than I thought it would be.
ReplyDeleteOn to the semis. I was trying to remember the last time a Houston team had made it to Sunday at Nationals. Nothing is coming to mind....
Houston! Clutch City!
ReplyDeletePete was really mean to me today.....
ReplyDeleteDid Babu play?
ReplyDeleteFreeman u da man!!
ReplyDeleteCanes in the finals, beat Hawaii 4-1. Play Pacific NW, coincidentally the guys they scrimmaged Thursday.
ReplyDeleteNG
We won the first three lines and then tried to pull off the other two. The people at the desk claimed it was bad sportsmanship, even though it's been standard operating procedure in these situations for decades.
ReplyDeleteDanny Vu was totally dominant in the semis against a quality opponent. Pacific NW had a battle with the team from Puerto Rico. Hopefully they won't be as fresh as we are.
We were told at Nats last year that all matches must be finished. Maybe the USTA changed their viewpoint.
ReplyDeleteGo get 'em!
Texas 5.0 team playing in the finals of Nationals too. Good showing for Texas teams.
ReplyDeleteOuch, just saw Pacific Northwest won, taking 2 out of 3 third set tiebreakers to win it 3-2. Tough loss guys, but great season. You guys represented Houston well.
ReplyDeleteGood run Hurricanes!
