Has anyone heard if the Houston Open will assign M4.5S to MPTC again? Or is it back to HFTC?
ReplyDeleteAny idea if those prices are for 1 day or 3 day passes.
ReplyDeleteThe prices are for one seat, three days. Hope some of you guys make it to Austin for the Tie, it's going to be fun. We are putting together a big party for Thursday night for all tennis players as well.

here's your top 4.5 doubles team
ReplyDeletewright/connell- lakeside
norkus/weaver- coaches
baer/a.jones- canes
medford/rios- blast
lan/chung- ace kings
top doubles player that can win with anyone
g.jones, foster, morris- canes
canes have the strongest doubles lineup. they will rely on winning two doubles and one singles.
Rios can't win at 4.0 what puts him in the top doubs for 4.5?
ReplyDeleteCanes have the best two singles players
ReplyDeleteJones and Ted they can win just one of the doubles.
Looking forward to the league. Lots of very good teams. More parity than ever before. In my opinion, it's between Canes, LSide, CField, JCC
ReplyDeleteKudrick bet Ted by like 6-0, 6-1 two or three years ago. Ted is nowhere near the top two.
ReplyDeletei think rios' doubles record with medford earned him the spot. big serve and heavy hitting are more effecive
ReplyDelete4.0 is less exciting as it appears Canes will be the landslide winner.
ReplyDeletetop 6 singles
ReplyDeletelakeside
canes
copperfield
ace-kings
blast
big bangers
top 6 doubles
canes
ace kings
coaches
blacksheep
duecebags
copperfield
top 6 teams favored to make playoffs
canes
lakeside
ace-kings
copperfield
blacksheep
coaches or duecebags or blast
Why on earth would anyone think the Canes will win 4.0 with what they have so far? Chancellors is much better right now. Things can change I know.
ReplyDeleteJust watch....
ReplyDeleterios is terrible. he can't hang at 4.5. look at his record. Canes are by far the strongest team in city
ReplyDeleteAs a member of the Canes and a friend of Petes id like for anonymous to come out and play Pete. If all you can do is hide behind a post then your just as terrible. His racquet will do the talking this summer.
ReplyDeleteMP
mp? who's initials are that? rios might be an outstanding 4.0, and a pretty good 4.5, but guess what. dont think he is can take down freeman's old 4.0 alumni like, sarosh, martinez, chambert, foster.
ReplyDeleteWhen does summer league start?
ReplyDeleteWhy who has sarosh, martinez, chambert, and foster beat? They are average 4.5 players.
ReplyDeleteTrue Dat... average 4.5 = sarosh, martinez, chambert, and foster
ReplyDeleteaverage? dont think so. pass year results in singles.
ReplyDelete- sarosh has wins over ford, jim, martinez
- chambert has wins over morales, giordanelli, orozco, griffin
- martinez has wins over morton, salinas, narajos
rio's only decent win is over giordanelli, who is an average 4.5 player
rio's recent lost to sanblom, callaway, morales, lagarde, cooper, boone (4.0), bishop, carpenter, allahverdian
noticed rios signed up for 4.5 coke. i bet he wont even get pass the 2nd rd
ReplyDeleteThere seem to be a lot of Rios bashers. Seems like a nice guy to me, not sure why all the hate. We'll see how the season plays out.
ReplyDeleteYes stop the hate. Sarosh's win were all bad line calls.
ReplyDeleteIf Rios signed up for 4.0 everyone would be hating on him for playing 4.0. Give the guy a break.
ReplyDeleterios has been overhyped, but when the truth comes out from his results, then everyone has sympathy. the truth hurts sometimes, and this only motivates his opponents to not just beat him, but to crush him
ReplyDeleteIt looks like there are two possible formats for 4.5. There are 25 teams, and there will be 5 divisions of five teams playing a double round robin.
ReplyDeleteThe question is, should the playoffs include one wild card team for a total of six teams, making the city playoffs in a round robin format? Or should there be three wild card teams, making city playoffs have two pools of four teams, with the winners of the two pools meeting for a berth to Sectionals.
I don't have a strong opinion, but have always felt the round robin format was better and produced a "true" champion, so if I had a vote, it would be with option one.
Why even have a Wildcard if option 1 is used? Have a 5 team round robin. There's no rule that Wildcards are mandatory for playoffs. A lot of the levels don't have a WC.
ReplyDeleteI would say if you're gonna have a WC then have 6 teams and 2 flights of 3 teams each.
But, my vote is option 1 with no WC.
how about 3 divisions. two with 8 teams and one with 9 teams. each division winner and runner-up goes to city playoffs. round robin format just like last year.
ReplyDeleteWord on the street is that there will be five divisions. I guess it is down to choice A or B.
ReplyDeleteI choose A but would not mind B. They are both fine.
i hope it's not 5 divisions with 5 teams. that's just too boring with one dominate team on each division. the 3 division 8/9 teams is much better. this allows the teams to play more variety of teams and the two best will qualify.
ReplyDelete4:15 why would people be hating on Rios for playing in the division he's rated to play in?? They way to prove your a 4.5 is to throw all of the 4.0's a beat down. I think Pete didn't enter the 4.0 division because he's afraid he can't win it. Alex Ellingson was bumped down to 4.0, dominated all competition at that level and was moved back to 4.5. if you have class and want respect that's how you do it. Pete thinks he's to good to play 4.0......He's NOT!!!
ReplyDeleteAgreed. 99 per cent of the time people who play above there ratings have big egos and are not as good as they think.
ReplyDeletea good example is the coke. do these players really think they have a good chance.
ReplyDelete4.5 playing open- j.bui, chavarria, s.jim, majed, mills, c.nguyen, t.nguyen, phoummarath, p.taylor
4.5 playing 5.0- r.black
4.0 playing 4.5- p.rios
all of these players are a joke, but the biggest one has to be tuyen nguyen playing open.
- lets keep a note of these players and i bet none them will get pass the second rd. play in your respectful rating and maybe you're good enough make the semis
Of course. There is no pressure when you play up. But if your Rios and you play 4.0 and lose in the second round then it is really humbling and an eye openere and you can't fool yourself any more.
ReplyDeleteThe current scheme of 5 division with 5 teams in 4.5 is crazy. Looking at the current rosters, 1 team (Lost Forest) has one 4.5 player and another LLTC Gossip Men has two 4.5 players.
ReplyDeleteJust disband one of these teams (or merge them) and go with 4 divisions of 6 teams. 10 match season, take top two in each division and have two pools of 4 teams in cities.
Everyone is going to lose two matches this summer so one 4.5 guy (one!) can have his own team!
So far with the roster, I don't see any team that will win in Dallas... but again its still early and more people can sign up. The stronger teams look like the Hurricanes and the sleeper team of Gypsies. Lakeside need additional doubles player while the Deucebags need singles players.
ReplyDeletei dont see why it's so hard to split the 4.5 division. look at last year's 4.5 div 1. they had 9 teams and the top 2 made the playoffs. they should use this format and have 3 divisions with 8 or 9 teams on each. top two from each makes playoffs and 6 team rd robin for playoffs.
ReplyDeleteAssuming a balanced schedule (everyone plays everyone else once or everyone else twice), the division sizes in order decreasing crappiness
ReplyDelete1. 8 team division == 7 match season, YUK!
2. 5 team division == 8 match season, play twice
3. 9 team division == 8 match season
4. 10 team division == 9 match season
5. 6 team division == 10 match season,play twice
Any other division sizes are unworkable. Just kill Lost Forest, they've got 3 players total signed up and no captain.
24 divided by 6 equals four divisions, problem solved.
I don't see it. What's the hype with the Gypsies? Also, does anyone know who Guy is going to sign up with?
ReplyDeleteLost Forest 4.5 is a joke every year. Why do they bother. Its all 4.0 guys anyway.
ReplyDeleteGuy is a 5.0.
ReplyDeleteYou cannot count John Kudrick as a 4.5. He is clearly 5.5 and he knows it. I doubt he will play singles due to this fact.
ReplyDeleteTrue Dat... average 4.5 = sarosh, martinez, chambert, and foster
ReplyDeleteCanes Danny Vu 4.0 player can beat all the players mentioned above.
John Kudrick will be Copperfields Ace in the hole in every match he plays. To 3:38 poster, He will play singles and Yes, he will DOMIMATE everyone.
ReplyDeletekudrick may be an ace in the hole, but the other teams can easily win the other singles and two doubles. this is team tennis and it takes more then one man to take you the playoffs. kudrick is probably in his late 40s, so he's definitely not able to handle back to back matches in the heat.
ReplyDelete4.5 format is out and very disappointing. lakeside and canes will have no resistance
ReplyDeletediv1- lakeside cruises
div2- blacksheep, gypsies, schwings all even b
div3- canes cruises
div4- copperfield, duecebags to battle
div5- titans, blast, chancellors, this will be the most exciting division.
I like the 4.5 divisions. Should be very competitive for 6 of 8 playoff spots or 4 of 6 if 6 teams. My predictions:
ReplyDelete1 - Lakeside, Katy Coaches, No Way Out
2 - Black Sheep, Sswing, Gypsies
3 - Canes, GTAC
4 - Duecebags, Copperfield
5 - Sugar Creek, Chancellors, JCC
Divisions 4 and 5 will be the most exciting. Playoff teams:
Top 6 teams as it should be + a battle for other WC spots.
1 - Lakeside
2 - Black Sheep
3 - Canes
4 - Copperfield
5 - Sugar Creek
WC - Duecebags
Last 2 WC - up for grabs
Gotta agree with 11:18am. Disappointing divisions and draw. The HTA made a big deal about having written rules in the spring and then promptly ignored them to allow several 4.0 teams to play 4.5. Four divisions with six teams and top two advancing would have be so much better.
ReplyDeleteAlso, how did the Hurricanes score getting placed in a division with 4 pathetic teams? Seems kind of obvious that one of the three top teams in Division 5 should have been in division 3 for more balance.
Who are the 4.5 Dark Horses that aren't seeded at the Coke tournament? Patch is seeded #1 but surely can't be the true favorite.
ReplyDeleteQuack Bui. Donny Bishop is playing really well right now as well.
ReplyDeleteyear after year, quack bui's has to be the most improved player again. he should win the coke
ReplyDeletethe canes got a straight ticket to playoffs, but this could backfire by not playing competitive matches.
ReplyDeletepatch has won two majors this year, so he should be a favor for the coke. it would be an interesting match if patch vs quack. i give quack the advantage if they meet early, but it's a coin toss if they meet late in the draw
There are a LOT of weak 4.5 teams this year, and the Hurricanes certainly did get their fair share of them in their division. If I were a Hurricane 4.5 player I would not be that happy...the regular season will be a snoozer.
ReplyDeleteHelp me out here...who is the best player in the Hurricanes' division NOT on their roster?
Overall I think the divisions are good, and I also think that the 'Canes history and roster strength DOES merit them having a somewhat easy road to the playoffs.
The problem with division 3 is not that the Hurricanes get an easy ride to the playoffs. They are good enough to win almost any division.
ReplyDeleteIt's that one of the remaining four crappy teams have will probably get a wildcard. None of those teams deserve even a whiff of the playoffs.
I'm sure the remaining four teams are just happy to be on court with the mighty 'Canes. Why even play that flight? Strong words 9:56.
ReplyDeleteOk, name a line on one of the remaining four teams in division 3 that would be a favorite over one of the lines on the Hurricanes. It's like Snow White and the four dwarfs.
ReplyDeleteBut one of those teams is gonna get a wildcard while a much better team in one of the other divisions sits out. Stupid division structure and seeding by HTA.
That's the M.O. of HTA, we all deal with it. If you put all of the strong teams in one division someone will bitch about that.
ReplyDeletethe titans got screwed. they should have gotten the easiest division, because they won city last year. they are put into the toughest division against blast and chancellors. all matches in that division will be important.
ReplyDeletediv2- blacksheep, gypsies, schwings should be as interesting as well
The Titans lost Ford and will not be contenders this year with their depleted roster, if it remains the same. The Canes have an almost completely new roster with some holdovers from previous teams, but should easily advance to city playoffs.
ReplyDeleteMy early picks based on today's roster:
Flight I: Lakeside
Flight II: Blacksheep
Flight III: Hurricanes
Flight IV: Copperfield
Flight V: Chancellors
For all the Pete Rios haters, he may not be the top 4.5 player in the league, but he is among the stronger ones.
ReplyDeleteI don't know Pete, but have watched him play against my teams several times. He would be top 8 on any of the teams out there. He might not be top dog, but he would be a starter on any of the playoff bound teams.
Can Pete beat Quack, Borkop, Hess, James Bui... I don't think so. He would not start for some of the teams. I don't think he would start for his own team in singles unless one of the 2 are playing doubles.
ReplyDeleteAre you telling me that Pete couldn't start on some stacked team @ line 3 doubles?
ReplyDeleteI don't buy that.
here we go again with the rios crap. let the record speak for itself.
ReplyDeleterio's recent lost to sanblom, callaway, morales, lagarde, cooper, boone (4.0), bishop, carpenter, allahverdian
No, I mean a started in singles not doubles. Yes he probably could start in doubles.
ReplyDeleteAgreed...he may not be one of the top single players in 4.5 League, but he is amongst the stronger players, and would crack into anyone's top 8.
ReplyDeleteThe 2 most stacked teams in the league right now are the Hurricanes and Chacellors. He probably would not crack their singles lines there. But even on the most stacked team, he at worst would be playing doubles at line 2 or 3 on those teams.
Ummmm I don't think so. Rios is a flash in the pan. All flash no substance. When the pressure is on he folds like a cheap umbrella. But only time will tell..... I think he lost like 3 matches at Tri-Level Secitonals playing with Danny Vu and that was at 4.0
ReplyDeleteI think Lakeside Estates and Sienna will be better than expected this year in 4.5
ReplyDeleteAre you sure it wasn't Danny Vu that choked?
ReplyDeleteif you're going to blame your partner for losing, then dont play doubles.
ReplyDeleteLooking at the rosters of the 4.5 teams, it looks like the Big Bangers lost a couple of regulars and added Michael Martinez and Robert Kane. Good luck with that.
ReplyDeleteI was looking at the Coke entry. What player do you think has the potential to upset the top seeds, but not necessarily win in 4.5 and open? I guess this will be a good question once the draw is out.
ReplyDeleteThat being true, the Bangers will probably come in second in division 3 and get a wildcard. Blah.
ReplyDeleteKeep in mind guys, there are 5 division, but potentially only 3 wild cards and maybe as few as 1. Not every runnerup will get a WC
ReplyDeleteJedi Knights looks like a dark horse to challenge for contention in Division 4. Do you think they take on Tran's Deucebags for the wildcard?
ReplyDeleteThe Jedi Knights have no singles players unless they can find another D1 player to self-rate at 4.5 like they did last summer.
ReplyDeleteYou mean Dugas's Deucebags?
ReplyDeleteThere seems to be a lot of whining pussies in the league this year, hope you leave your Tampon's at home on Thursday nights. I'm personally looking forward to a fun season. Some of the teams you think are good will be bad and some of the teams you think are bad will be good, it happens that way every year.
ReplyDeleteOh sorry the Dugasbags.
ReplyDeleteMy new 4.5 team
ReplyDeleteLLTC Whining pussies
Hacker: Time for a new thread. Any analysis from you on the upcoming season? Also, since the tourney blog is gone, maybe a post for the Coke after the draws come out?
ReplyDeletecan the duecebags win their division? What about their roster of singles and doubles players?
ReplyDeleteIf the comments on this blog are any indication, it seems that no one believes we have any guys that can play singles, but we'll go out there and give it our best anyway. See you guys in the playoffs!
ReplyDeleteDD
Miguel, Trey or Donnie Bishop can play singles for Deucebags. That will be strong enough to carry them into the playoffs
ReplyDeleteSomebody has been smoking some wacky tobacky.
ReplyDeletegoldberg can play singles as well
ReplyDeletegoldberg has wins against Herb Morton and several other top players
ReplyDeleteDeucebags will make the playoffs. It is a 3 team race in that division: Deucebags, Copperfield, Jedi.
ReplyDeleteJedi only has 8 players registered now, so unless they add players I can't see them challenging for the 2 playoff spots.
Goldberg has improved a lot.
ReplyDeleteDeucebags can make the playoffs, but with those singles players they cannot make it out of Houston.
ReplyDeletethe is the strongest duecebag team with goldberg in the line up
ReplyDeleteLooks like Chad Henagan found a home with the Dugasbags.
ReplyDeleteWhy who has sarosh, martinez, chambert, and foster beat? They are average 4.5 players
ReplyDeleteGoldberg can beat all of these guys.
Henagan makes the Deucebags the favorite for Sectionals.
ReplyDeletegoldberg line #1 singles and henagan line #2 singles. all they have to do is only win one doubles.
ReplyDeleteWait a second. We're talking about 4.5? how do you figure Goldberg wins line 1 singles?
ReplyDeleteIf only Odion and Omon were still 4.5. They would want on the Goldberg and Henagan team. Could you imagine. Singles goldberg and henagan and doubles Odion and Omon. Can you say nationals.
ReplyDeletePlease use the comments to demonstrate your own ignorance, unfamiliarity with empirical data, ability to repeat discredited memes, and lack of respect for knowledge. Also, be sure to create straw men and argue against things no one has said nor even implied. Any irrelevancies you can mention will also be appreciated. Lastly, kindly forgo all civility in your discourse . . . you are, after all, anonymous.
ReplyDeleteMan talking about dream teams. You should add Kris Knutson too. Then they can swap out Goldberg, Henagan, and Knutson. Those would be guaranteed lines. Can you money!!!
ReplyDeleteHas anybody heard if there are any local rules for the USTA season? The mess Katherine spewed out for rules specifically was only for HTA leagues according to her and the League Committee. It might get messy if they have not thought about the local rules for USTA play.
ReplyDeleteAccuracy the hallmark of HTA staff: The correct date for Sectionals for 4.0 and up is Aug. 12- 14th in Richardson. Thanks Diana for upholding the tradition...
ReplyDeleteLOL. Message from Diana about league schedules includes:
ReplyDeleteAll teams must have 4 players registered at the team's level. DOH! Isn't it kind of late to try and enforce this rule after divisions and schedules are set?
One 4.5 summer team that shall remain nameless played HTA 4.0 in the spring and went 3-5. Out of their 10 players currently registered, exactly two are 4.5.
So, nice work, HTA! We get to play an 8 match summer season instead of a 10 match summer season and must adopt a crappy wildcard system because you are too lazy to enforce your own rules.
Come on guys, give the HTA folks a break. How would you like it if you were constantly called out in a public forum at work. You wouldn't!
ReplyDeleteHTA should know Houston's tennis community better than it does. HTA can allow a team with 80% 4.0 players to play 4.5 in the spring and fall leagues, but should enforce their policy in the more compitetive summer league.
ReplyDeleteWasn't it HTA's stated policy more than 50% of a team must be rated at certain in order for a team to be allowed to sign up for that level?
Yeah lay off. You sound like a bunch of ladies bitching during brunch!
ReplyDeleteThe HTA staff is doing a great job. HTA membership is down. HTA tournament participation is down (barely 500 in the Spring tournament formerly known as the Coke). HTA league participation is down. The city of Houston is growing, and tennis participation in the US is greater than any time since the '70s according to TIA. They should be applying for jobs at Enron or the Titanic.
ReplyDeleteNah, I won't lay off. Summer league is the one time during the year that league actually counts for something. I and most of the readers of this blog look forward to it.
ReplyDeleteBecause HTA ignored their own rules (1.06b) and let a team that didn't even have a winning record at 4.0 play 4.5 this summer, we have this lame 5 teams in five divisions and stupid wild card system. They should have just made them play 4.0 and we'd have had a 4 six team divisions, a 10 match season with no byes, and a sane method of determining playoff participants (top two).
Dude get off it. First of all the team isn't completely signed up yet. Only 5 have signed up and 3 are 4.5's. So far, the team is legit.
ReplyDeleteDude, wrong team. Learn to read.
ReplyDeleteNah, I won't lay off...
ReplyDeleteThis guy is a bitch if that's all he's looking forward to. Like another poster said people can sign up throughout the season. Are you even that good at 4.5?
LOL. Everyone is getting their panties in wad.
ReplyDeleteCalm down, girls!
Ward is that you whining again?
ReplyDeleteWard is 5.0, or is it 50s?
ReplyDeleteYes please ladies, dont get your panties in a Ward. That would be an ugly.
ReplyDeleteI'd go Kobe and say what Ward really is but am afraid I might get fined $100K
ReplyDeleteSo can someone sign up for a team AFTER the league starts on 4-21-11?
ReplyDeleteYes, in the past you can still sign up.
ReplyDelete
