I just took a look at the summer league rosters for the first time in a week or so, and there's been a flurry of activity.
Some have pooh-poohed Lakeside Country Club's chances, but I like the recent additions they've made. My old teammates Eddie Perdomo, Hai Vu and Phi Huynh have joined the squad. More intriguing is the addition of Ed Hess, who was a high quality 30's player (and 5.0 league player) back in 2003. If there's not too much rust on him, he'll be a factor. Their team has potential.
We'll see if this weekend produces any other names to keep an eye on.

Not TOO much of interest on the first day of the HTA Houston Open. Ryan Cooper doing well. Bruce Inting with some nice wins. Kris Knutson stretched to three sets. Perhaps the biggest story was the upset of the top seeds in the 4.5 doubles by Bharat Gururaj and former 4.0 Sebastien Chambert. Fellow 4.0 bumpup Brandon Myers knocked off number two seed Phillip Griggs in the 4.5 singles.
ReplyDelete4.5 graduate Hasker is in the quarters in open level.
ReplyDeleteCooper ain't playing on Sunday. Enough said.
ReplyDeleteCooper tried his best and someone has to point out he isn't playing on Sunday. Man, what a douche.
ReplyDeleteI promise whoever said that wasnt playing sunday either!
ReplyDeleteMaking the round of 16 was a pretty good result for Cooper. I suspect that he's going to do very well in league and make the Jedi Knights a force to be reckoned with this summer.
ReplyDeleteThe "Coke" was a fun tournament. I played a lot of really nice players. Sean Lacy was really fun to play and seemed like a nice guy. I had a close match with Scott and he was a little too much for me in the end. It wouldn't have mattered because the tall guy (Arringdale?) looked really tough. I hope I can get in a little better tennis shape next year and make a run to the semi's.
ReplyDeleteI keep hearing about playoffs for the divisions and flights? What do you guys think? Does it ad some excitement to the Spring and Winter seasons?
ReplyDeleteAnd yes I realize I misspelled "add".
ReplyDeleteyo cooper, looks like your game improved since last summer league. glad to see that you stepped it up.
ReplyDeletemcmullen and morton looked like they stepped it up also. should be interesting in two weeks.
RCooper are you by chance from the Dallas Area? (ROCC/FMJH)
ReplyDeleteI am.
ReplyDeleteEveryone make sure to get there players signed up fast or else David Hall will try to get your team diqualified.
ReplyDeleteHerb,
ReplyDeletewhat happened? why did you not sign up for the better hurricane team. looks like you got stuck with the B team. you made it to semis in both events and deserve the promotion
Lakesides team looks average. Seems like they are allowing non members to play out of their club. Hess will be a NON factor.
ReplyDeleteLakeside will be a good team. Although Hess will be a NON factor for them.
ReplyDelete3 player rule. Can only keep 3 players together from the 2009 team.
ReplyDeleteI'd like to do how Bill Morris made it on the Canes A team.
ReplyDeleteFrom what I hear there won't be a Hurricane B team this year. I wouldn't overlook either team.
ReplyDeleteOf course not since Canes A had to split up. You move Canes A #4-6 over to Canes B team and both teams are going to be strong. Canes A will have 3 studs but then drop off whereas Canes B will have more depth since they are building off of last year's team.
ReplyDeleteThanks to whomever said I should be on the A team!!!
ReplyDeleteJason F asked me to sign up for this team and I did. I like playing on his teams and I trust him. Signups aren't finished yet so it is hard to see what the final team will look like. I am sure it will be fun regardless.
Be interesting to see how Freeman builds team A & B. The 3 person rule limits who can join each team, but who else will fill out the rest of the roster. I'm sure we will see some of his 4.0 bump-ups but will they be strong enough to compete in the playoffs and Sectionals if they get there?
ReplyDeletefoster, chambert, narajos, martinez, ahmed were ex- freeman players that have not joined yet. all of these guys have the talent to beat most 4.5 vets
ReplyDeleteLet's face it. The roster of the team Herb is on right now is awful. Maybe it will get stronger but right now it's really bad.
ReplyDeleteAll rosters are awful right now.
ReplyDeleteI don't see any 4.5 teams with a stud singles player on their roster yet. There are some good singles players, but not a stud that would almost be a guarantee win in any match like Omon and Hasker last year.
ReplyDeleteIs Zachary going to play for Lakeside? They would have a clear advantage IF he is in shape.
ReplyDeleteThe D'bags will be the team to beat. Tran has been recruiting like crazy for many months. If he can keep his roster nice and tight then they should be playing at sectionals.
ReplyDeleteLOL. They got no talent without Hasker and Bui. Who going to play singles? Ward? HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!
ReplyDeleteHerb must be on the A team he is playing with Brian Goldberg. They finishes second in best of Texas.
ReplyDeleteD-Bags added Hung Nguyen and that guy is the quiet sleeping giant. Good job Alain keeping him under the radar.
ReplyDeleteHess and Zachary should be locks at singles for Lakeside. Strongest two 4.5s in Houston.
ReplyDeleteAre you taking about Greg Zachary? According to his record, I don't think he would rank among the best 4.5s in Houston.
ReplyDeleteAnyone recruiting for a lefty? Richard P.
ReplyDeleteDepends what day you get Zachary on. Guy is so streaky. I have seen him play like a 5.5 and seen him look like a 3.5!
ReplyDeleteIf Zachary does well it will just confirm that the league is weak as shit this year.
ReplyDeleteZachary's 4.5 league record is 17-6 in regular season matches but 1-8 in playoffs, he got bumped to 5.0 and tanked his way back, In the fall season in Dallas he played on a weak team who let him intentionally lose all of him singles matches...allegedly.
ReplyDeleteWhy so much hatred for Greg? He is a nice guy who like to compete who is just battling age like the rest of us! I, for one, am happy to have him in Houston.
ReplyDeleteTo the guy that makes the all the crazy prostations and then ends with "nough said", can you come up with something a little fresher? I have been reading that stupid closing thought, if you can call it that, for long enough. You are stuck in a rut. It's like Troy Aikman with his "no question" nonsense to begin every thought.
ReplyDeleteI fully agree with the last comment. Enough said!
ReplyDeleteNo offense to GZ but if he is one of the two best 4.5s in Houston (especially singles), you guys shouldn't even bother sending a team to sectionals ;)
ReplyDeleteAnon 2:55 is just making stuff up.
Anon 5:21 is very much correct.
Good Luck to all the Houston teams headed to the WTT National Qualifier in Las Vegas this weekend.
ReplyDeleteI hope Greg reads this crap!
ReplyDeleteAround the state rosters are filling out. Amongst the Top 4 Austin has re vamped their roster with 2 self rates Swords and Ruedy. Both of whom are Top 5 players in the 30's division. In San Antonio Team Torres is once again stacked and leading Team Miller in a close race. In Dallas Team Branch has enough depth to have 2 teams represent Dallas but, they have to find a way to figure out who the Top 8 are.
ReplyDelete- inquiring minds want to know why these players haven't signed up yet.
ReplyDeletefoster, chambert, narajos, ahmed, benzon, dibua, sumrall, martinez, bergman, hansen, trevino, costillo, rios, phan
-looks like duecebags picked up ballesteros; that's a great pick up and big lost for the canes
Brackets are out in 4.0 league
ReplyDeleteBrackets are out for 4.5. Looks like there will be a 9 team division and two 5 team divisions. I predict GTAC-Ball Busters will provide some interesting upsets. They have 2 recent college players as well as a good teaching pro from River Oaks C.C. They also have Moser who's playing some good tennis right now.
ReplyDeleteDeucebags will lack singles players which will put them in the middle of the pack. Ballesteros is a good add for them if he can bring some depth to their roster they could even be better.
I think the guys who are getting excited about tennis in this blog site are bush players, have something to prove and really the GOOD players stay quite and not get involve and the BUSH players are all over this site...guess you guys feel like talking about other players makes you feel good since you were probably picked on by other dominant figure all the time..
