It's early, so there are not many results in yet. I have been incommunicado so I haven't heard much news, but here's a quick update:
None of the "interesting" matches in 4.0 have reported yet. As expected, the Hurricanes blew out the Acers and SAP crushed Sugar Creek.
In 4.5 two of the heavyweights have reported their scores. WestSide continued to roll on, beating the Ball Busters 4-1. The most intersting score, to me, was Sean Lacy absolutely destroying Garret Pittenger. Lacy is now 3-0 in singles and 2-0 in doubles and has not surrendured a set. His best win was 7-6, 6-3 over David McMullan. Opposing captains who've not seen Lacy play have got to be wondering just how good he is.
The Mob Squad had a surprising shutout win over Ssshhhwing. Herb Morton made his first appearance, but was not tested as Peter Rothe came down with an injury. Aadrian Hasker won his first match at #1 singles and Minh Phan and Tam Pham spoiled the Giordanelli brothers Houston USTA league debut.

I noticed Tam Pham and Dwyer both won again in 4.5. Those two should not be allowed to play 4.0. How does that 3 strike rule work?
ReplyDeleteI hope Rothe has Aflac.
ReplyDeleteMaybe he can sell some to himself.
Hater.
Who is the bigger league snake, Dwyer or Benzon?
ReplyDeleteBenzon for sure-he's about a much of a snake as it gets. trust me.
ReplyDeleteAnyone know how Royal Oaks 4.0 did last night?
ReplyDeleteWell, i guess its not that bad. He still manages to get people to play on his teams and they still ask him to play on their team. Not doubting what anyone is saying, but I guess some tolerate his ways more than others.
ReplyDeleteDoes Red have a product website.
ReplyDeleteThanks in advance from all the players at Rice.
Just saw Yutts lost to sugarcreek 3-2.
ReplyDeleteWTH does red do? just seems like he does nothing but play tennis... does he even have a job??
ReplyDeleteBenzon's noho team beat knutson team 3-2. The noho teams would get slaughtered by the Mob/kingwood Crush and Westside if they were thursday evening.
ReplyDeletedoes anyone have any insight as to which city will be the toughest at Sectionals in 4.0 or 4.5?
ReplyDeleteI think those NOHO teams are pretty good. It is doubtful that yesterday's lineups were the absolute best with it being a holiday weekend and all.
ReplyDeleteRed's NOHO team did all they needed to do, win 3 lines. I'm sure Red would not be wasting his time with convincing people to drive all the way down to Bay Area if he did not expect to have a competitive team at sectionals. His team will only get better.
ReplyDeleteAntonio Ford a former open player was needed for Red's team to win. Plus Ted P. did not play for Cypresswood that match.
ReplyDeleteMost cities look better than Houston this year at both 4.0 and 4.5. This is a down year for Htown.
ReplyDeleteI seriously doubt the NOHO Benzon and Knutson team would get slaughtered by the Mob Squad, Crush or Westside.
ReplyDeletehave not seen this Lacey guy play but give me a break. Just look at his last years USTA record. .500 at best in the tennis hot bed of N Carolina. Just shows you how weak D2 4.5 is in singles. Pittenger is a push and while McMullan is good, he's still like fitty yrs old. Lacey will get mowed down by any of the good singles players on Mob, Met or Kingwood
ReplyDelete^^^^
ReplyDeleteIf you have not seen Lacey play then your words are completly meaningless and with out merit.
How Good is Ted Phoummarath? All he plays is Open tournaments so is he considered to be a Open player?
ReplyDeletePhoumarath is one of those guys who plays at a higher level then he should because there's no pressure to lose when you play up. He's above average 4.5. He's a notch below the Dibuas.
ReplyDeletehelp me understand something. Hunckler is rankled #3 in 5.0 singles in the state but is playing 4.5 league for Met???
ReplyDeleteGoing back to the May 25th question of best 4.5 teams for 2008 sectionals. Always look out for Austin. Ft. Worth is going to be really, really strong. They actually have 2 good teams. The Valley seems to put together a team every 4 or 5 years that makes it to Nationals. I have a feeling this might be their year to put a really strong team together.
ReplyDeleteHunckler is not a ringer in 4.5 league. He is a welcome addition to any team but not a ringer.
ReplyDeleteRingers: Odion, Ted, Antonio Ford, John Kudrick, Blessing. All of these players could easily beat Hunckler.
Anyone know the scoop on Copperfield self-rating one of their teaching pro's as a 3.5 player. There is a rule that all SuperChamps MUST self-rate no lower than 4.5.
ReplyDeleteStephen Coyle
Tennis Professional
Stephen Coyle was a Junior SuperChampionship Scholarship athlete throughout High School. He played college tennis for 1 year before joining the United States Army. During his time with the Army he competed for the All Army Team. When he returned to America he was a tennis professional for King Daddy Sports and Northgate Country Club. Here at Copperfield he enjoys working with our Adult competitors and our young and upcoming players.
I believe that teaching profesionals are required to self-rate at a minimum of 4.0. Coyle is listed as having a rating generated from mixed league last year, however, and is not a self-rate. The mixed generated ratings are often a joke. (I think David and Blessing B. got their ratings from mixed leagues, for instance)
ReplyDeleteI just noticed Coyle is actually playing 4.0 matches for Copperfield. What a JOKE! Everyone on that team should be embarassed. The club itself should step in and ask him to stop embarrasing the club by playing so far below his ability.
ReplyDeleteTournament play and summer league play can be very different. By no means is anyone ranked in the top 5 in 4.5 or 5.0 a ringer in 4.5 summer league. I doubt Ted P or Odion would easily beat Hunkler, but i am sure it would be a good match. Blessing or Ford might, but look how they get their ratings. People like Benzon are the ones who are behind some of these guys getting their ratings just to feel that "high" of doing well in Sectionals and or Nationals.
ReplyDeleteNeither Blessing or Antoine have a self rating they generated there rating through mixed and past league play.
ReplyDeleteDoes anyone think that Austin Wild will repeat and be Victorious again this Year?
I'm sure the Team out of Dallas (Rusty Branch's Team) will definitely be a Top Contender.
Was that score of Flad and Aro against Teague and Barerra a mis-print or was it really 6-0 6-0?
ReplyDeleteTeague and Barrera got bageled. It is correct.
ReplyDeleteI play at Copperfield and agree Coyle is not a 3.5 player. Having played against him a few times and having watched him play multiple times I'd have to agree with a 4.0 ranking. He is an above average 4.0 player but wouldn't make it yet at the 4.5 level.
ReplyDeleteIn B18S, Coyle was not super champ... he was a ZAT player, then qualified for champs, then played 4 champ major zones winning one match at each. Anyone can dig that up with a few mouse clicks on tennisinformation.com. Also, he told me that he had an accident a few years ago, and has metal pins in his knee, and doesn't move well. So a 4.0 rating would probably be more accurate. But maybe he received a 3.5 rating because of the permanent injury?
ReplyDeleteWhat is the tennis history of Lacy?
ReplyDeleteUnless the Copperfield Racquet club web site is inflating Stephen Coyle's credentials then there is no way he's a 4.0 (a 3.5 rated tennis pro!!! are you kidding me?). I think we might have a new Sarosh on our hand!
ReplyDeleteCopperfieold is not exactly famous for the playing level of their teaching pros. Didn't Montzny and Montes work there?
ReplyDeleteMontzny is 4.5 w/o a doubt.
ReplyDeleteI haven't read what the Copperfield website says about Coyle but I've played him a few times and he's not better than a good 4.0. He has the "kids" syndrome where every ball has to be hit as hard as possible. His strokes are decent but when you only hit 50% in the court you can't play 4.5. Once he plays a bit more and gets a rally stroke he would have 4.5 potential.
ReplyDeleteLacy will have the opportunity to play one of the two top singles in the 4.5 div II this week. who will he take on, Magid or Bui from Rice? Magid is definitely the stronger player then Bui. and Bui will give you a tough match.
ReplyDeleteAnyone know anything about Lacy? Not many true 4.5 players would stand a chance against Magid, being he is probably more of a good solid 5.0 player.
ReplyDeleteAlex Montes plays for the Met at 4.0.
ReplyDeleteI would rank the following players above Stephen Coyle in the 4.0 division.
ReplyDeleteRicardo Martinez - Advanced to Round of 16 at 4.5 singles at Coke and won the 4.5 Consolation @ Copperfield Open. Also beat Stephen Coyle at the Copperfield Open
Roberto Narajos - Won the Coke without dropping a set; and won the Copperfield Open without droppng more 3 games in a match
Eddie Pomodoro would likely be too much for Stephen Coyle.
Alex Montes would give him a good run.
Ratings aside, which are suspect among many players, there are several players in the 4.0 league that will best Stephen Coyle.
Here are just a few examples.
Why doesn't Tim Green play 5.0 league? Is it because he cannot hang?
ReplyDeleteI am sure he is trying to get back down to 4.5, so if he has any decent wins over 5.0 rated guys, that will not happen. Remember: he knows how the system works.
ReplyDeleteThats because Freeman recruited ringers that shouldn't be playing 4.0. Most of his 4.0 team seems to be made of up teaching pros and some has college experience as well... of course Coyle or any other regular 4.0 can't "hang" with Freeman's team.
ReplyDeleteAny team that goes to Nationals has "ringers" on it. Unfortunately, that is the only way a team can be competitive at its respective level. Most other states do the same thing. If you do not like it, then dont play summer league.
ReplyDeleteWhy isn't Schmucker playing for any 4.5 team this summer? Surprised Freeman did not recruit him especially since he has a winning record against Hunckler and is better than some of guys on that team. I think two teams asked him to play on their league team, but for some reason is not playing.
ReplyDeleteJust wondering.
I'm sure Red and Tim are going to have Tim back down to 4.5 next year. Red has also done a good job of losing plenty of matches himself this year to ensures he stays down as well.
ReplyDeleteAccording to the HTA website the Houston 4.0 men have already won a wild card spot to sectionals. This is good news since there are so many 4.0 teams in Houston.
ReplyDeleteA winning record over Hunkler: they have played one time and that was 2005 or 2006. I doubt he would beat Rios, Ahmed, Yang, Schornick or Hunkler these days. And being that he is not a doubles player, where would Freeman put him?
ReplyDeleteI doubt Red losing on purpose. Only one score looks fishy. He just isn't that good. Greg is good but not good enough for an elite team. He could help a team like the Jedis or Copperfield or the Schwings.
ReplyDeletePeople like Red will lose matches on purpose if his team has already clinched the overall win, and to protect his rating. And honestly, he is not an elite 4.5 player either, he just knows how to put a team together and surround himself with good players.
ReplyDeleteRed's rating is closer to 4.0 then 5.0. In men's league matches this year he is 3-6. Men's tournaments 1-2. Combined 4-8. Imagine the ringers he will get when he is 4.0.
ReplyDeleteOn the Mob Squad Red has played line one doubles each time and has played with different partners each week and hasn't complained. I'm sure his record would be better if he played easier opponents or with a steady partner.
ReplyDeleteHow does it feel Red? All of your snake-like ways coming to bite you now.
ReplyDeleteWhat is coming to bite him? People are just making conversation about Red. And Red is not a 4.0 player, he is a 4.5 player and competes very well.
ReplyDeleteIf your a good doubles player you can almost play with anyone. So stop making excuses for him HTown. Playing line 1 doesn't represent your the #1 player. Everyone sandbags lines.
ReplyDeleteHere are the facts: Red is fat. He is a 4.0-4.5 singles player and a 4.5-5.0 doubles player. He is a snake. He cheats according to many sources.
ReplyDeleteHe doesn't cheat while playing tennis, but its obvious he cheats at the buffet line.
ReplyDeleteIf Coyle is such a great 4.0 player how come he has not played at the coke or any other tournament, or 3.5 for that matter. Can someone please explain to the copperfield team that RINGER is not just a sound in our phones!!
ReplyDeleteCoyle played OPEN at the Copperfield tournament and barely lost two matches to 16s and 18s superchamp kids. Superchamps are considered 4.5 players. He is a good player, probably one of the higher rated 4.0s in Houston but not a top 4.5.
ReplyDeleteThis week in League:
ReplyDelete4.0:
Division I - no important matches
Division II:
Village Place (4-1) at
Chancellors (6-0)
Westside (4-2) at
Willowfork (4-2)
Division III:
SAP (5-1) at
Sienns (5-0)
Division IV - no important matches, looks like 1st and 2nd have already been established.
4.5
Division I - same boring matches, 1st and 2nd have already been established.
Division II:
Westside (5-0) at
Rice (0-3)
Copperfiled (3-1) at
Jedi Knights (2-2)
Division III:
Mob Squad (4-0) at
Sugar Creek (1-3)
Chancellors 4
ReplyDeleteVillage Place 1
Westside 3
Willowfork 2
Sienna 3
SAP 2
Westside 3
Rice 2
Jedi Knights 3
Copperfield 2
Sugar Creek 3
Mob Squad 2
I like the Sugar creek pick. Ballsy.
ReplyDeleteSugar added a new singles stud to compliment Cooney. Also, Day/Burmann are a lock against any of the Mob Squad doubles lines.
ReplyDeleteSugar Creek splits the singles and wins 2 out of 3 doubles.
While Red is many things.... CHEATER is not something he is if you are talking about line calls. I think he is very fair when it comes to line calls. And, he is still a solid doubles player for thos of you who say he sucks. He has some league losses this year, but most were against legit #1 doubles teams.

ReplyDeleteI know for a fact that Alex Montes is not a 4.0 player...
ReplyDeletehttp://youtube.com/watch?v=0Z7018_DT_A
stephen coyle likes cock, and loves andy (leonidas) and know his size too... always talks about it...
ReplyDeleteScrew you
ReplyDeleteCoyle is a joke... As a player and coach. Guy does not know how to get any junior player to be successful past the champ level. He can not coach high performance players. Warning, take your kid elsewhere for success.
ReplyDeleteSo you're saying he's never coached any Super Champs?
DeleteBecause he has.
ReplyDeleteTaking credit for coaching high level players, and actually getting them there is a difference. He has stalled out many players careers. Those who move elsewhere improve quickly.
ReplyDeleteNothing special from much of anyone in that neck of the woods over the past few years. Certainly not in 18 Supers. Seems like one win in the main draw is pretty much all anyone can manage. That can't be attributed to just one coach
ReplyDeleteYeah, he is such a joke that 3 of his students (2 of whom went on to get scholarships) played in the final of the women's open section in the HTA tournament this weekend with one team taking out the no. 1 seed and the other taking out the no. 2 seed. So much for stalled out careers.
