The HEB Major Zone will be played this weekend in San Antonio. Local players are top-seeded in the 4.0 division (Matt Drake) and 5.0 division (Tim Green). There seems to be a dearth of 4.5 Houstonians playing tournaments this year. Jon Griffin is seeded third, but there are few other locals of note in the draw.
Also this weekend is the Tri-Level Sectionals being held in Kingwood. Jason Freeman again has a powerful team which will face tough competition with San Antonio, SETX and Dallas in their flight.
Discuss.

Just realized I deleted the old thread in making this new one. I guess I'm still a rookie.
ReplyDeletePLAYER ALERT!!!
ReplyDeletewho is bobby fox of the ballhawks? his rating is 4.0, but why is he playing #1 singles on a team with all 4.5 players and smoked his opponent last night. my conclusion is he's probably their best player on that team. if that's the case, 4.0 summer league might have a new king.
Self rated player. Won't last long if he keeps it up.
ReplyDeleteYou mean this Bobby Fox

Looks like a bona fide locked line if you ask me. And yes, he's legit. Virginia Wesleyan class of 94 makes him older than 35, Div 3 school means he can self-rate as a 4.0.

Dude was an all american and played #1 singles, think you are reading the grid wrong. he should have self rated at 5.0 if he is between 31 and 45 years of age
ReplyDeletePete Rios 4.0 for tri-level team and playing number 1 singles for JCC???
ReplyDeleteWhat teams and players will be at the top for the HTA Spring season for 4.5+ ?
ReplyDeletePete Rios is a 4.0. At a distance he appears to be a 4.5 with nice strokes and aggressive style but he needs to work on his consistency and shot selection.
ReplyDeleteFor Bobby Fox it depends on what his national ranking is. Wesleyan is not a nationally ranked school. I think outside of top 25 and he's ok.
ReplyDeletepete rios is no stranger to houston tennis. judging from his record, you can tell by his abilities. definitely a non-factor in 4.5, but an impact in 4.0. fox, is a newcomer and still a mystery. i have a good feeling that he will be talked about on the 4.0 blog during summer league.
ReplyDeletedon't see how you could be an All American and not be top 25 in nation
ReplyDeletePete's results last year were definitely 4.0 grade. (No, he wasn't tanking.)
ReplyDeleteHis game has improved to where he is a respectable 4.5, but he still needs a lot of work (as 2:02 noted) on shot selection and consistency before he is a top 4.5.
Expect a couple of stunning wins by Pete and a couple of head scratching losses by him at 4.5.
I don't see Ballhawks in 4.5 Singles. Which team are you talking about?
ReplyDeleteWho is better as a 4.0? Pete Rios or Alex Montes. I see both these players as very similar. On the edge of 4.0/4.5 but will never break the barrier until they realize Ws are about style/finesse and not flash.
ReplyDeleteIf Pete Rios is similar to Alex Montes then he is no 4.5.
ReplyDeleteWho said Rios is a 4.5? A lot of 4.0's can hang with a 4.5 and even occasionally beat them but that doesn't make them a 4.5. Both Rios and Montes have 4.0 computer ratings. Wondering how much of an impact they will be this summer. Looks to me like if this Bobby Cox can avoid a DQ he's the top dog in 4.0.
ReplyDeleteRios is much better than Montes. There is no comparison. Rios summer results are no reflection of his game now. He is playing at another level. He is probably the best 4.0 in the city
ReplyDeletejust looking from rios latest results, he seemed to turn his game around. he's signed up with ten teams, which probably breaks a record. he has a decisive win over Michael J. Giordanelli, who is not a slouch. looks like his game has raise up a level. i think he will benefit being a top 4.0 player, but don't eat more then you can chew by playing 4.5 summer.
ReplyDeletelooks like the big bangers will be playing mptc masters next monday. the masters have some veteran 4.5 players. let's see how bobby fox will handle them. this blog will be smoking if he pulls off a win
ReplyDeleteRios better than Vu?
ReplyDeleterios better than vu? are you kidding? there's no comparison. rios has not beaten any top 4.5 players. vu was a top 4.5 player and still is. look at his record. still scatching my head how he got bumped down to 4.0.
ReplyDeleteI was just tagging on 8:47 who made the comment that Rios is probably the best 4.0 in the city.
ReplyDeleteVu is a 5.0 now, sb no comparison to Rios
ReplyDeleteOops, found Bobby Fox, in 1994 ranked #13 in NCAA Div. 3. He can't self-rate as a 4.0 until age 56. USTA doesn't care where he was ranked, just that he was ranked (qualifies him as "Div. 2 & 3 top ranked college team or player" on the General and Experienced Playe Guidelines chart. Bye bye, Bobby, a 5.0 at the stroke of a captain's pen.
ReplyDeleteYep - too bad. Bobby Fox is O-U-T. That makes Rios and Vu the top dogs in 4.0 and I'm fairly confident Freeman has nabbed both of them.
ReplyDeleteSo what's the scoop on 4.5? Will Kudrick play 4.5? If Hernan from LF chooses to play 4.5 they would be great for any 4.5 team but not likely they would leave their respective clubs.
Suspect Kudrick and Hernan will turn up on a certain NOHO team, in addition to playing for their clubs in Houston league.
ReplyDeleteCheck out the new tennis link website! Pretty interesting.
ReplyDeleteHow do you think 5.0 Danny Vu got down to 4.0, it is called tanking. Even though I am not sure why he did it. He can still win most 4.5 tournaments.
ReplyDeleteVu hasn't been rated 5.0 in about fifteen years. Let's not exaggerate. He's still way too good for 4.0 though unless he got a lot worse in the last 3 years.
ReplyDeleteThey did cancel the playoffs. I wonder if we are getting a refund for our league fees?
ReplyDeleteGet a life if you really care about HTA playoffs.
ReplyDeleteI care about the playoffs along with about 75% of the HTA membership according to that survey from a couple of years ago...Don't be a hater just because your team sucks...
ReplyDeletethe difference with vu, is he's coming from dominating 4.5 to moving down to 4.0. this is a huge skill level difference. as for the other freeman's 4.0 bump up to 4.5 alumni, (sarosh, chambert, foster, martinez, etc...) they were dominating in 4.0 and some success in 4.5. if vu was playing 4.5, i would rank him as top 6. he still would beat players like sarosh, chambert, foster, martinez. he's definitely a far margin from any other 4.0 player
ReplyDeleteHey Idiot from 3:33. Wow talk about selective journalism. While, yes, there was a lot of support (don't know if it was 75% or not) in favor of a playoff system I don't think I'm going too far out on a limb to say that most of those supporters would still be in favor if it meant compromising scheduling for the summer league. We're not haters we're just also not purists. The HTA is under the discretion of the USTA and the TTA for scheduling the USTA season and a hard requirement for when City Playoffs needs to be played for determining who advances to Sectionals. Yeah, well sorry to say but most people don't care of HTA Playoffs in comparison to USTA Sectionals/Nationals.
ReplyDelete@ 4:10 I'm appreciating your ad hominem attack, intrigued by your assumption of profession, but not your false dilemma. The HTA playoffs shouldn't have any impact on the next league. Simply set a deadline for the end of the Spring league prior to the USTA season and use TennisLink to determine the playoff participants at that time. Teams who have made up more matches will have an advantage as they should. Men's dubs 4.0 is probably the largest flight and with 4 sub-flights could determine a city champ with 2 matches. Seems achievable to me without causing an issue for the USTA or Texas Section...though I am not sure about the TTA!
ReplyDeleteYou are accurate on Vu he would be a number 2 singles 4.5 league player for almost every team. Him playing 4.0 is sick.
ReplyDeleteAs already stated. Nobody REALLY cares about HTA playoffs. And if you do it's only because you and/or your team sucks and this is your only chance to get a T-shirt or tennis towel.
ReplyDelete@ 4:36 You are still an idiot. Nobody really cares about HTA playoffs. Are you so insecure that you have to prove your bragging right by trying to win in the meaningless playoff?
ReplyDeleteLast season, you can't even get into the 4.0 Men's doubles playoff with the help of your 4.5 players. Why do you think it will be different this season?
Hey, lighten up on those HTA towels. They are great for cleaning up nasty spills in the garage!
ReplyDeleteAll I know those boys for h town are gonna own San Antonio.look for great results
ReplyDelete@ 5:50 So far we are 3-0 so I think we have a shot...we like playing tennis, and when we are misled about our opportunities to play we are unhappy.
ReplyDelete4:57
ReplyDeletei think vu would be #1 singles for almost any 4.5 team for an exception of 3 or 4 teams. as well as doubles
How does anyone know who anyone else is and what players they have when all the posts are anonymous? The playoffs are a good thing for the leagues and honestly I don't understand all the incessant bitching about them. Spring, summer or fall you play to win. The HTA doesn't not care about the growth of tennis in Houston and they sure as hell don't care or worry about the players. @5:50 put your record up and we'll compare you to other players.
ReplyDeletei heard vu has had 3 wrist surgeries. has anyone seen him play singles lately?
ReplyDelete8:57 - Vu was not a #1 singles on any of the teams he played on when he was in top form, so why would he be #1 singles now? He should be the #1 Houston singles player in 4.0 this summer if in shape and not injured.
ReplyDeleteHow did Old School lose to Taylor last night? Is this a tank job?
ReplyDelete10:35> You weren't misled. The HTA had every intention of having the playoffs however they could not predict that several weeks would be cancelled due to inclement weather. Come on guys. Use your heads. It's really not that difficult to understand and seems no matter what the HTA does people bitch. If they extend the Spring league 2 weeks in order to allow for the make ups to be played and the playoffs that reduces the number of weeks for USTA to be played and could inhibit those extra weeks for make-ups at the end of Summer league. If that happens you all would say, Wow, how ignorant of the HTA to not plan enough weeks for make-ups or, gee we only have 7 weeks of league and my players don't like getting so few matches or how stupid the HTA didn't schedule enough matches so that my team of 26 players can get enough matches to qualify. DUH DUH DUH. Sorry, but you're still an idiot. Try to think past your nose.
ReplyDeleteHouston League Bitch Blog, I like it!
ReplyDelete#8:58# Again just another idiot who opened his mouth and removed all doubt about his brain-power. You made statements up even though you are not even privy to the conversation the HTA's powers that be were discussing about the playoff cancellation. I hope the HTA is smart enough not to include you to participate in their discussion.
ReplyDeleteAs far as asking @5.50 about his record, why does it matter? So, if he is a better tennis player would you admit that you are an idiot who only think with your oversize ego? I doubt it. More than likely you will again hide behind Anon the magnificent.
Yes, I am Anon too, because that's only what you can compute.
@3:58 You must be new to Houston. It is REALLY easy to predict that there will be bad weather and cancellations in January & February.
ReplyDelete6:05> You must be a fortune teller.
ReplyDeleteFor all these complainers about cancelling the playoff. Can any of you show where exactly has the HTA League guaranteed of a playoff? Perhaps you can enlightened us (the bloggers) about the exact wording that the HTA said about a playoff in the Spring or the Fall league?
ReplyDeleteI wouldn't expect any stunning results from Rios at the 4.5 level. He recently lost to Donny Bishop who is a middle of the road 4.5 at best.
ReplyDelete6:05. Hmmmm maybe because in the 18 years I've been playing HTA League this is the first year they have had to cancel matches due to cold. Maybe it just means the players are a bunch of pussies now and can't handle it.
ReplyDeleteHouston advanced to the finals of the Tri-Level tomorrow against Fort Worth.
ReplyDelete@10:31 Wow another insecure guy who can't handle logic and reasonable polite conversation without resorting to name-calling.
ReplyDeleteDon't worry man, your claim as the obnoxious anonymous rex in the Houston League Tennis Blog would not be challenged. In fact, you should be proud to be recognized as the Houston Tennis scourge for 18 years running.
We should all thank you for serving as a role model. Somebody we do not want to be when we get to be as OLD as you are. LOL!
It looks like Freeman's run at Tri-Level Nationals came to a halt this morning. Even ringers lose sometimes
ReplyDeleteMore accurate than ringers losing is scrubs thinking that some of these guys are actual ringers.
ReplyDeleteWTF - is everyone else having trouble viewing match results? You can see the team standings but when you click to view the match results you get an error.
ReplyDeleteridiculous that they went live with the new tennislink with this many bugs.
ReplyDeleteHouston ended up forfeiting their 3.5 line due to a player being late. That totally sucks.
ReplyDeleteWhy were they late? I believe the ice on the roads were a couple of weeks ago. Which team lost the 4.5s or 4.0s? I believe this ends the streak of winning tri level three years in a row
ReplyDeleteYeah, I can't view the finals scores on tennislink either. Also, sectional results don't even show up on the player records!?
ReplyDelete3.5's got defaulted for being late. :(
ReplyDeleteBoth the 4.0s and 4.5s went to 3rd set tie-breakers with 4.5s winning and the 4.0s losing.
Sad way to lose.
Here's a question one of you guys may be able to answer or at least give your view on. Why does the Texas section continue to show players who have been bumped up on their previous ranking's list? Seems pointless to keep them listed since all of their points are going to do nothing but fall off as the year goes on. Just curious as to why & pose the possibility to the Texas section to take them off the list.
