I made my first-ever trip to the HTA Christmas Party last night, which was held at Cheryl's lovely home and was a lot of fun.
I ran into league veteran (and now 5.0) Allen Teague as he elbowed me away from the buffet table. Anyway, he told me about a new league he is trying to put together which may be of interest to many of you. As you may know, there is a senior (50+) league which is held late in the summer and consists of three lines of doubles. Last year Jimmy Kilshaw's 4.5 team and Mike Spoor's 4.0 team both qualified for Nationals.
Allen has proposed a similar league for 40+ year old players and has been working out the details with the higher-ups in Austin. While there is currently no national championship held in this event, the hope is that it will take hold in Texas and perhaps eventually grow to that level. Right now the plan is for this to be a pilot program, and will probably initially start at the men's 4.5 and perhaps 4.0 levels.
Allen would like to know how much interest there is and would love for potential captains to contact him. I may have had a few too many egg nogs last night, so some of the details may have eluded me. Please contact Allen if you're interested in captaining. Unfortunately I neglected to get his phone number and/or email address, so hopefully he or someone else will provide it, or you can consult the membership directory at http://www.houstontennis.org

ReplyDeleteI'm in the target audience (4.5 in my 40's) but don't care for age groups - prefer levels across all ages.
ReplyDeleteBy the way Greg. Congratulations on being selected for the HTA Advisory Board. Guess that indirectly means the entire blog is now on the Board.
ReplyDeleteThanks. Yeah, I feel like I can be a voice for y'all if you have concerns or ideas. So by all means let me know of your suggestions, etc.
ReplyDeleteYeah then the HTA can tell you to screw off directly.
ReplyDeleteGuys the men's 4.0 & 4.5 40's event will be similar to the currently men's 50's event. The plan is to roll it out at the same time (after the levels events are done). This would give several players another "bite at the apple" to get to a sectional event then eventually a national team event.
ReplyDeleteDetails are to come and there is already a very positive response across the section to this so need to call but the word will get out and we look forward to participation.
Thanks Greg for helping to get the word out.
Allen
I think it's a great idea. I'm looking forward to more info.
ReplyDeleteI will be interested also when it becomes available
ReplyDeletefinals of 4.5 singles leage tonight. Katy vs. Sienna.
ReplyDeleteI'm in. Now I must really working on tanking back to 4.5. I'm too old to be 5.0. Those kids hit the ball too hard and call the lines way too tight.
ReplyDeleteAllen, will the league results apply to year end ratings?
ReplyDeleteyes, sure they will!
ReplyDeleteGreg:
ReplyDeleteCan you help provide the HTA staff a calendar? I got a note from her that set the deadline for registering for league the week between Christmas and New Years. Seems like pushing that back a week or so might decrease customer discontent.
I will do my best... I'm not actually involved yet. I assume that will start after the beginning of the year.

ReplyDeleteIf you are interested in playing league and avoiding the HTA bumbling, you might want to check out the Missouri City CTA offering at mccta123@comcast.net.
ReplyDeleteI talked to Gloria Dial about that two weeks ago, She sounded interested but said she had to discuss w/ the other two board members, one of which was her daughter and some other pro which I believe was named Miguel but not very sure. Gloria knows that is the best way to grow the Mo City CTA but don't think she has the time. I will post back when she gets back to me
ReplyDeleteFrom the HTA website, here is the link to the HTA Google Calendar:

I believe this is updated live.
Well, that sounds really good. I remember one Christmas party that took place in an event space San Francisco and each one of them made a delicious item for everybody. We got to taste so many different cuisines that day. Also, we exchanged gifts. It was good reading this post.
