The Texas Adult Masters tournament is approaching, with play set to begin on November 5th.
Several Houston area men's players have qualified in singles.
In the 4.0 division, the Houston area will be represented by Matt Drake and Kris Knutson, who have been placed in the same grouping. There are four players in each of two groups ("red" and "white") and the winner of each group advances to the finals.
In 4.5, half of the field comes from the Houston area. John Griffin and David Guy are in one bracket, and Herb Morton and Chris Sandblom are in the other.
In 5.0 play, Tim Green, Omon Dibua and Reggie Black all qualified, with Dibua and Black set to play in the round robin portion.
Doubles qualifiers in 4.0: John Shivers and Brian Dennis.
Doubles qualifiers in 4.5: David Hall, Peter Rothe, Red Benzon, David Guy, Brian Goldberg, Herb Morton and Robert Wood.
There is no 5.0 doubles event.

4.0 Kris Knutson will take it.
ReplyDelete4.5 David Guy will take it.
5.0 Another epic battle between Omon/Tim.
Isn't the Master's kind of a joke now. So few of the "Top 8" ever sign up that just about anyone can get in now.
ReplyDeleteDunno about anyone being able to get in, but in 4.0 Singles the players that got in were in the top 11. #8 - Miles Marks decided to play Men's and Mixed doubles instead. #9 and #10 decided not to play. Knutson definitely has the easier draw. He should have no trouble with Gomez, Drake and McNeil. The other half has tougher draw for sure. As for Mens 4.0 doubles, the top 8 teams qualified with 5 different teams winning a major zone....should be a great tournament.
ReplyDeleteHope Knutson plays better than he does against the 4.0 bump-umps in the Fall singles league.
ReplyDeleteWill the Master's be applied toward YER? And are ratings coming out first week of December like usual?
ReplyDeleteI don't think tournaments count towards your rating. Even if they did, I would think all results would be cut off after nationals. Are these things spelled out anywhere. I've heard several different versions.
ReplyDeleteI think tourneys are like mixed and you can only generate a tournament rating if it's all you've done but i'm probably wrong about that. otherwise it would be too easy to sandbang league and keep your rating down through tournaments.
ReplyDeletemy two cents;
ReplyDelete- 4.0 is a joke if knutson is the top subject. dont get me wrong, knutson can play some tennis, but where's the competition?
- 4.5 griffin, sandblom, morton are all above average 4.5 players but none have broke away from that when it comes to summer league. guy is the only one on this list that has success in tourneys and summer league
- 5.0 are u kidding me? black? only reason he's mentioned here is no one signs up for 5.0 tourneys. he couldnt even win a 4.5 tourney and compete with 4.5 summer league. omon has developed his game to beat some big name players. green some good results according to the scores with omon, but a lost is a lost, get over the hump.
Once again the USTA f's up in their handling of situations (re. Tournaments). There is no consistency throughout the country and they leave it up to each Section to decide. I'm not sure what Texas does.
ReplyDeleteAn excerpt from the USTA website PDF regarding DNTRP:
http://assets.usta.com/assets/1/USTA_Import/dps/usta_master/sitecore_usta/USTA/Document%20Assets/2008/11/11/2007%20FAQ%20NTRP%20All%20Self%20rate%20%20DQ%209%2018%2006.pdf
14. Do USTA sanctioned tournaments count in the dynamic rating system?
If so, can a tournament win be used as one of the three “strikes”?
Each section has the option of including tournament results for year-end
calculations. If your section includes sanctioned tournament match scores, they
will not be calculated into the system until after the national championships.
Sanctioned tournament results do not generate strikes; however, they will impact
your year-end rating. Open/Age Division national tournament results are entered
into the NTRP system after league national championships.
Matt Drake has been playing well, He will take the 4.0 Masters.
ReplyDeleteMatt works as hard on his tennis as anyone in the city. But I don't think he has the experience to handle Knutson's junkballs.
ReplyDeleteI agree, Drake is good at getting the ball back, but has struggled with players that play the same type of game. He went 3 sets at sections with Daryn Watson (a 3.5 bump up). I would be very surprised if he wins his bracket.
ReplyDeleteWow tournaments are weak now.
ReplyDeleteBlack could not start for any 4.5 playoff teams. Griffin and Sandblom are roll players at best on a playoff team. Drake couldn't start for a 4.0 playoff team.
Tournament is weak because you are not playing.
ReplyDeleteThe whole problem I have with the Masters is that it should be a free event. The USTA charges almost twice as much for this event, which was supposed to be to reward the top players who have worked hard all year to be in the top 8. I don't care if they raised the entry fee of every other USTA tournament throughout they year to pay for the event, it is unacceptable that it is $55. And yes I understand that there is a dinner/party or whatever else but you can't really promote that as something you are doing for the players when you are essentially charging 25 extra bucks for it.
ReplyDeleteComplete bs in my opinion!!
@Corey, an interesting perspective, but from the HTA's side tournaments are all financial losers. Even without attributing any employee costs to tournaments, they are a bit under "break even." Theoretically Harriet is paid to run tournaments and half of Cheryl's salary should head to that cost center. I think the HTA has had to underwrite the LeMaster cost overruns also.
ReplyDeleteI think Knutson should win, I saw that Drake and Watston match and I agree, I would be shocked if Matt finishes strong, no offense but the other guys are just better.
ReplyDeleteHTA Open: $33
ReplyDeleteCopperfield: $21
Lost Forest: $26
HTA sucks.
I know it is the lesser and never talked about division but any thoughts on the 3.5 men? it looks like H-town is represented well.
ReplyDeleteHow do you see the teams for the 4.5 doubles at the Masters?
ReplyDeleteDel campo and Ludke.....old timers but good....tough team!!
ReplyDeleteHow about Benzon/Guy and Morton/Goldberg?
ReplyDeleteWhat about them?
ReplyDeleteThis just in from Tennis Link:
ReplyDeleteThe 2010 year end rating calculation process is currently underway. It will include matches played from Nov 2nd 2009 thru Oct 31st 2010. The expected date of publication is November 29th 2010.
I heard that Kris Knutson and Matt Drake both won their first round matches. Knutson won in like 38 minutes.
ReplyDeleteGD
Thanks for the update Kris
ReplyDeleteHouston Masters Results:
ReplyDeleteIn 5.0 singles, Omon Dibua beat Tim Green in the finals.
David Guy won the 4.5 singles, and Kris Knutson lost in the finals of 4.0.
H-town representing!!!
ReplyDeleteChris Alexander from Pearland was the finalist in 3.5 singles. H-town did well.
