The year's most important tournament is being held this weekend in San Antonio as players vie for the top eight and inclusion in the Masters Championship.
Numerous Houstonians are seeded, including the top two seeds in the 5.0 division: Tim Green and Omon Dibua. Jason Gound and Greg Medford are two intriguing floaters in the draw.
In 4.5, Ed McCool is the top seed, with David Guy #4, Herb Morton at #6, Brian Goldberg #11 and Greg Schmucker coming in as the twelfth seed. Mario Gloria and Daniel Cambon are two of the more dangerous floaters in the draw.
Matt Drake heads the list of Houston area players seeded in the 4.0 draw, coming in at #4. Kris Knutson, fresh off another tournament victory in Beaumont this past weekend, is #5 and considered the favorite by many. Israel Bacon got the ninth seed, Carlos Quijano is tenth and Gregory Brown is number 13. Former Cy-Ridge Ram standout Tommy Do makes his 4.0 debut as well.

Predictions
ReplyDelete5.0s Odion (95% chance)
4.5s David Guy (50%)
4.0s Knutson (75%)
who posses the biggest threats for these guys? Who is Guy's and Knutson's toughest competition?
ReplyDeleteOdion has Zero chance of winning, since he's not playing the tournament. His twin Omon has a 95% chance of winning though.
ReplyDeleteGuy will be seeking a rematch with Mario Gloria, who beat him earlier this year.
Knutson's toughest competition is himself. If he can slice his forehand for the whole weekend he should be fine.
BREAKING NEWS!!!
ReplyDeleteThis just in...the HTA just informed me that the 2010 fall season results DO count towards your USTA rating. Not sure how they were able to accomplish this since I spoke directly with the USTA office and they told me that the results did not count.
Anyhow, just thought everyone should know!

ReplyDeleteLet's hope you are correct. If it is the case then I just want to apologize to my future doubles partners and opponents for this coming season as I wil be playing the season left handed with my shoe laces tied together after shotgunning a few beers before each match as an attempt to get bumped down.
Let the tanking begin.
Can somebody post the link for the tournament?
ReplyDeleteWow, Derrick Dugas and Richard Boehck beat Craig Bobo and Allen Teague 6-0, 6-0 last night. Looks like Christopher was correct.
ReplyDeleteToo bad 6-0, 6-0 matches don't count into your rating :)
ReplyDeleteOk, now for the important question before you all begin the tanking. Do the Fall 2010 results count towards your year end 2010 NTRP or 2011 NTRP?
ReplyDeleteNote that the Fall 2010 league is listed under the year 2011 on TennisLink. I have a feeling that all of this fall tanking will be to no good use.
LOL. Teague and Bobo are noobs. Any good tanker knows that the best score is 6-1, 6-0. :)
ReplyDeleteThe apply to the 2010 YER Ratings. It is confusing because the calendar year for TennisLink os Sept to Aug. But the 2010 HTA Fall League reaults WILL factor into 2010 YER
ReplyDeleteIs it true or is 1136 being a smart ass?
ReplyDeleteI know for a fact that 6-0, 6-0 results count toward your rating.
ReplyDeleteOk, the following link states the 6-0,6-0 results are not used (at least in Atlanta).

Please show us something concrete to the contrary for Texas.
I won a singles match at Sectionals 6-0, 6-0 a couple of years ago and didn't get bumped up (and that was the only match I played at Sectionals that year). I inferred that they didn't count it, but who knows.
ReplyDeleteHtownHacker
C. Bobo and A. Teague did not lose 0 and 0 on Thursday. It was a score reporting error on my part. This being my first season as a captain, i've never entered scores before, and could not figure out what to do for a default. I've contacted HTA to fix the error, and have since learned how to record a default. Rookie mistakes.

Just confirmed with the USTA Texas Section office that the fall season results DOES count towards the 2010 Year end season rankings. Let the tanking begin!
ReplyDeleteAll the mid year bump ups will be back to their previous level after the fall season. I still propose if you go to nationals for any team you are bumped to the next level for at least two years. If not expect to see Lubbock 4.0s team win every other year or any team like them.
ReplyDeleteHouston wins 4.5 and 5.0 singles titles at sectionals.
ReplyDeleteLOLOLOLOLOL. Fall result count towards this year's ratings. Things are gonna be ugly!
ReplyDeleteWe should have a poll at the end of the season for which player did the best job of tanking their way back to the next lower level.
Who are the obvious tankers?? Will there be more bump downs from 4.5 to 4.0 this year?
ReplyDeleteNo obvious tankers? Hmmm. I guess we will have to see some fall league scores before we can determine the bump downs.
ReplyDeleteCombo participation from mens was a blank. What's up with that???
I tried the whole tanking thing tonight --
ReplyDeleteDrank a beer during warmup and first set.
Lost the first set due to stupid errors...then the pride factor kicked in.
Won the second set in strong fashion.
Then I realized what the goal was this season and had to dump the breaker after being up by 3 with the ball in hand to serve for the match.
This tanking shit is tough mentally.
Dumbass. The tiebreaker is only worth one game in the NTRP system. Might as well win it if you get there.
ReplyDeleteI will do better next time!
ReplyDeleteAhhh yes, pride. I does suck to lose to fools who you could beat 2 and 2.
ReplyDelete7:27 is right. Winning a 3rd set tiebreaker is basically meaningless to the computer.
If you want to tank and win, shoot for 7-6, 0-6 1-0. Given a -4 game differently, the computer will place you as being approximately .2 of a point WORSE than your opponents.
Also, if you can arrange it, try make sure that you play the crappiest players on the other team.
I haven't seen any obvious tanking in the fall 4.5 league yet, did anyone spot something suspicious yet? What about in 4.0?
ReplyDeleteWhat the heck, how is it that the team from Taylor HS leading the league? They didn't even make it into the playoffs in the summer.
I saw in the Dallas blog where tankers were being called out, and found that very funny.
LOL. 11:27 was Towle. We're in your division and I just saw your match score.
ReplyDeleteI'll make sure and schedule our worst guys at line #4 for you to tank against when we play SAP. They need their egos pumped up anyways after the ass-kicking they took this summer.
Sorry- not me, but the lights did cause havoc on my ability to see the ball last week.
ReplyDeleteMake sure you LMK when we are playing you guys so I can be there, I am travelling a lot this fall.
Biggest tanker so far in Houston is our very own Christopher Towle. If you don't believe take a look at his scores.
ReplyDeleteFunny. I have played one men's match and two mixed matches.
ReplyDeleteHow am I tanking exactly again?
For those that don't know my mixed partner/wife is coming back from birth of our third kiddo and we played some tough teams.
The men's match was close, we played on crappy court 4 at LLTC and for those who know me, know that I struggle right at dusk.
Thanks for calling me out though!
I'll come to Chris's defense any day of the week. I have played against him several times and he does whatever it takes to win. Before you accuse people of tanking, you better know the person instead of just looking at scores alone.
ReplyDeleteLOL. Chris, I would have appreciated it if you could have tanked that 3rd set tiebreaker last night against my guys. Coming back from 8-5 down to win 10-8 and clinch the whole match is gonna knock us out of first place in the division.
ReplyDeleteNo hard feelings though, I'm still feeling good about personally beating the tar out of your guys at line #2. Pete Rios is going to wreck havok at 4.0 if the computer keeps him there.
uh, I was in Dallas last night playing with some guys in Allen as I do when I go up there for work.
ReplyDeleteI know a lot of us chubby white dudes look alike but I wasn't playing last night.
Chris we are trying to help you. We are making up match scores for you. This way nobody will no your tanking.
ReplyDeleteLOL, wrong Chris, my bad.
ReplyDeleteThere are a couple of 4.0 rated players that look pretty strong in addition to Rios.
ReplyDeletei'd be interested to see what the computer puts Rios at. did he tank in the summer league or something?
ReplyDeleteNo, Pete didn't tank. First, he self-rated at 4.5 which would make no sense if he wanted to be 4.0. Instead, he just got his ass kicked a lot because he had plantar fascitis, hadn't played competitively in a long time and was basically a walking unforced error.
ReplyDeleteAs additional evidence, he lost the decisive line in at least two of the JCC's summer 4.5 matches.
Given the way he's now tearing things up in the fall 4.5 leagues, I suspect that he will be 4.5 come spring.
