The schedule is jam-packed with good match-ups this week in both 4.0 and 4.5.
In 4.0, there is a bit of intrigue in Division I after Kevin Lim Cunningham's disqualification this week. His four matches were defaulted, which managed to vault Gleannloch Farms into the second place spot ahead of Cunningham's Ace Makers. Lakeside will be favored over Gleannloch Farms this week, and we could see GF and the Ace Makers battling it out for that second place spot until the final week.
In Division II, top team WSTC-Phoenix plays upstart Double Trouble, who have a surprising 3-0 record despite losing Rafah Ahmad and Ed Galvez from last year's mediocre team. In Division III, two Cinco Ranch Teams are filled with unknowns, but have dominated the division thus far. Lance Loken is hoping his Copperfield squad can remain in the hunt until their match next week with top-ranked Cinco Ranch Westside Comets.
In 4.5 Division I, the top four teams will be tested in crucial match-ups this week. Lakeside faces a desperate GTAC team fresh off its first loss last week. A potential line one singles match between Moser and Hess will be worth watching. Quack Bui would be a favorite over Sandblom at the other singles spot, but could have trouble with Benton if he's used there. Lakeside would seem to have the edge in doubles. The Deucebags have a talented roster, and on paper would seem to be the favorite. They're in a precarious position in my opinion, however. Peter Borkop has been destroying people. TOO EASILY. Should he fall victim to the "three strikes" rule, as did Austin Wild's John Swords and the aforementioned Kevin Cunningham, the Deucebags' season would be over. Luckily for Borkop, his opponents have not been very strong and he has been spared from disqualification.
In Division II the Hurricanes II take on the Black Sheep in a battle of unbeatens. Recently added Murray Fonseca and the dominant Pio Davila give the Black Sheep an intriguing one-two punch (Humberto Alzate gives them a nice third singles option). Sean Lacy and Wayne Morgan look to rebound from a puzzling loss last week to Metoyer and Champlin.
In Division III, top dawg Copperfield plays Westheimer Indoor, who is tied with the Hurricanes in second place. With the Hurricanes having a bye (aka Lost Forest, who has yet to pick up a line this season), the Titans will be behind the eight ball with a loss. Copperfield looks to have the stronger roster. Simon Jim has yet to be seen for Ken Douds' crew. They may need him this week.

possible singles matchup
ReplyDelete- borkop vs callaway
- nguyen vs patterson
- davila vs guy
- fonseca vs mccool
- ford vs kent
- jim vs martinez
- moser vs hess
- bui vs sandblom
How does someone get DQ'd without much of a record? Cunningham won a few matches but it didn't look like anything that jumps out at you as anything out of the ordinary.
ReplyDeleteLock, they are coming for you!!!
ReplyDeleteso is borkop protestable?
ReplyDeleteThe three strikes rule has nothing to do with protesting. Borkop is legal.
ReplyDeleteHacker makes an interesting point about Borkop crushing his opposition (some of which are 4.0 bump ups). I wonder if the computer is using the true NTRP of the 4.0 bump ups in computing strikes (making strikes unlikely even in a blowout) or if it is using some artificially inflated NTRP created to cause lots of 4.0s to be bump (generating bogus strikes).
ReplyDeleteAnways, way to screw up the competitive balance at 4.5, USTA.
sandblom was a formiable opponent but got crushed by borkop
ReplyDeleteWhat is the 3 strike rule?
ReplyDeleteOk, a quick primer on NTRPs. USTA discloses a rating for everyone that goes up by halves, 3.5, 4.0, 4.5, etc. However, the computer that generates these rating keeps a finer rating (up to two extra digits). For example, I am 4.5, therefore my actual computer rating is between 4.0 and 4.5. My guess is that I'm a 4.1 or so.
ReplyDeleteThe key to the computer ratings methodology that USTA uses is that it expects each difference of .1 in exact rating to correspond to 1 service break (a 2 game difference in total game score). For example, if you win a match 6-4, 6-4, the computer expects you to have a .2 higher NTRP. If you lose 6-1, 6-1, the computer expects your rating to be .5 less than your opponents.
After each match, the computer slightly adjusts your rating to bring it in line with your most recent match results. If your last match results was closer than expected, the computer adjusts your rating down (even if you won). Or vice versa.
For self-rated players, the computer uses this formula along with the established rating of your opponents to create a dynamic rating for you. If this rating exceeds your self-rate level for a given match, you receive a "strike".
For example, let's say I self-rate 4.0 and beat a player with an established rating of 3.8 by 6-2,6-2. The computer thinks that I should be .4 higher in rating and therefore a 4.2. Since this dynamic rating is higher than 4.0, I receive a strike.
If this happens three times in a season for a self-rated player, the player is disqualified and his match results are reversed.
So how come Lock doesn't get bumped?
ReplyDeleteNo worries - Lock matches will be reversed very soon!!!!!
ReplyDeleteI would destroy all of the mentioned players including Lock...but I won't try til playoffs hahahahaha!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteplus one more surprise...that no one sees coming!
ReplyDeleteLocke doesn't get bumped because he wins, but keeps it closed. However, he played Division 1 and Davis Cup so he'll be DQed for not following the self-rating guidelines (aka lying).
ReplyDeleteso why when you do "find a rating" on Peter Borkop, there is no rating type next to his name. Is he an S, B, or C???
ReplyDeletePeter is totally legitimate. I was only trying to point out that his lopsided scores may put him in jeopardy of getting three strikes.
ReplyDeleteSay what you will about the Wooten/Larrazolo/Spoor situation, (and admittedly it may have been a bit blatant) but it is standard operating procedure for top captains to, at the very least, have their players "manage" their scores, if not having them tank outright. There are occasionally players who refuse to do so. It's possible that Peter is one of these guys (I don't know him) or that Alain doesn't believe in playing those games. But Alain is not naive, he does know that it's done (he was at the very least affiliated with the Mob Squad when we did it, in fact). I hope Peter gets to play the entire season. The league needs the fresh new blood. And, he does have some mediocre doubles results which may offset some of the singles blowouts he's been dealing out, which may help his cause.
As a captain of a top-flight team, Mike Spoor has a lot of considerations to make. His goal is to put out a team that makes it to Nationals, and he has a team that has a shot. Encouraging a player to "ease up" may give his team a better chance to do so. The downsides? It shows a lack of respect for the game. It totally skews the NTRP's of the entire league, as players like Wooten and Larrazolo will have "artificial" ratings and will be benchmark players. The rating of every player they play will be based in part on their ratings. Wong and Yao, their opponents, will be greatly affected and may end up 4.0's next year as a result.
Despite playing league for about 15 years, I don't know the exact rules on effort, or even on tanking for that matter. It's virtually impossible to prove. We've all beaten or lost to players we "shouldn't have" and have all had amazing and/or awful days where nothing or everything worked.
Anyway, that's my two cents worth on things. Feel free to discuss.
i still don't get it. can you explain again. so if borkop blows away his next opponent in singles, he should be dq'd right? that will be 4 strikes
ReplyDeleteNot necessarily. The previous poster explained things pretty well. One thing he didn't mention was that there is a tolerance level. In other words, you only get a strike if your rating exceeds tolerance. So, if you're a 4.5, you may need to have a 4.6 dntrp to receive a strike.
ReplyDeleteYour DNTRP is NOT based on just one match. So, just because Borkop blew out Ismael Dutchover it doesn't mean he got a strike for it. Don't forget, other matches are averaged in to calculate his rating. Just because you get a 100 on a test doesn't mean you have an A average. Ismael probably had a low rating. Perhaps a 4.1. So, even though Peter blew him out, he may not have gotten an extremely high rating "averaged in". There's no way of knowing how many strikes, if any, that he has received.
Good summary Greg. Yes, we have all seen it done but just make it a bit closer and less obvious IMHO.
ReplyDeleteHow the hell is Wong and Yao suppposed to feel now?
ReplyDeleteThey must feel like shit now and be really pissed off at Oscar the Grouch and Young Wooten!
If someone is intentionally throwing a match against me I would kick their ass!
So basically, if I'm a 4.0 player, then I need to tank worse than Wooten when I play him. Because if I win, then I could be bumped to 4.5 at year's end. Great to know ahead of time, and who wants to watch this match?
ReplyDeleteso what rating status is Borkop, S, C, or B?????? it makes a difference
ReplyDeleteYou can look up any player's rating and their status at Usta.com "S" = Self Rate, "C" Computer, & "B" = Benchmark. Craig
ReplyDeleteI know, for whatever reason there is no rating status for Bokorp when you look him up under find a rating. have never seen it like that before except on players who have no match records and arent rated????
ReplyDeleteGreg & Chris, Just looked up Borkop... What does it mean when there is nothing next to a person's rating and there are all 0.00? Does this mean that they have no rating published yet or they are about to be DQ'd?
ReplyDeleteHuffman signed up for D-bags. How does that change the line-up for Tran's team? Any new predictions?
ReplyDeleteLock will be DQ'd by Texas Section Monday.
ReplyDeleteone down, borkop next
ReplyDeleteI just happen to have a copy of the year end ratings and here is what Peter Borkop's rating stated at year end:
ReplyDeleteBorkop, Peter M Houston TX 4.5 5/18/2009 S
Ash has done a good job putting the Lakeside 4.5 Team together. They have a solid roster but not sure they can make it to Sectionals without a little more depth. They'll handle GTAC tonight no problem. 4-1 with their best line-up. We'll see if they pass the test next week and the week after and come Citywide Playoffs. Good luck fellas.
ReplyDeletewow, how about Lance Armstrong people?
ReplyDeleteKobe Bryant is a Mad Man! Where's Lebron now?
ReplyDeleteI think the Astros should trade Roy Oswalt and everyone else that's 30 and over. Just start all over...
ReplyDeleteLakeside 4.5 hasn't shown all their cards yet!
ReplyDeleteHow's that for diverting the topic away from Borkop? Enough of the haters out there! Come play him yourself and find out if he should be considered a ringer....Hasker didn't even get this much love last year!! ENUFF!!
ReplyDeleteeveryone knew how good hasker was last year. his scores did not warrant a protest. however, he's improved since last year and is taking down some tough players in 5.0.
ReplyDeleteborkop's score doesn't look competitive, that's why he's getting attention
Who was the top player in 4.5 last year in Htown? Hasker or Dibua Top 5? Hasker, Dibua, Dibua, Carpenter, Sumrall? How does Borkop compare to them... or Lock? Is Lock the best in year's at 4.5? How did Wanja & Heim compare on the NOHO 08 Nationals Team?
ReplyDeleteHave any of you idiots even seen Borkop play? He is beating up on absolute scrubs. He is not even close to being the best player on his own team.
ReplyDeleteBorkop is technically still a self-rate.
ReplyDeleteHasker, Wanja, Heim, Carpenter, Lock ,Dibua, Dibua, and now A. Kent are all 4.5 RINGERS!!! Even at the National Level. Case one of a only a few guy's in Texas to compete with them.
ReplyDeleteI have to admit I wish I'd never written anything this week. Anyway, I'm looking into why Borkop has changed from an "S" to a 0.0, Craig. I feel guilty for pestering the USTA about it, but did it anyway. I don't think I'm making too many friends this week.
ReplyDeleteI think it may say 0.00 just because it's been over a year since he originally self-rated.
ReplyDeletewe all want to know why he's changed from "S" to a 0.0. if he is illegal, that means bye bye duecebags
ReplyDeleteHe's not illegal. A year after the self-rate date, the computer will reset the "S" to a 0.0. Lance noted that his self-rate date was 5/18/2009, which is over a year ago. That has been confirmed. He is legal. That too has been confirmed. Let's play tennis.
ReplyDeleteTop player last year? Omon beat Hasker. Hasker lost to Omon and Phoummarath, but destroyed people at Sectionals. Got to go with Omon despite a surprising loss to Jerry Pham at Sectionals.
I would imagine Lock would crush them all.
I just bought Lance Armstrong's book and now I lost a lot of respect for him. Wondering how many tennis players are using PEDs.
ReplyDeleteAny news from Betsie on the Ladies side?
ReplyDeleteThis is her year off due to nationals rule. The houston team that goes to DAL will be ho-hum and will probably be eliminated in pool play. She seems to gear up in the odd years and consolidate all of the talent and makes the run to nats.
ReplyDeleteAny predictions on the "big" 4.5 matchups tonight?
ReplyDeleteD'bags beat Swing 3-2
ReplyDeleteLakeside beats GTAC 3-2
Black Sheep beat Hurricanes 3-2
Copperfield beats Titans 3-2
peter borkop plays smart steady tennis from the baseline, its notlike he has beaten the likes of teddy p.this season.peter has beaten 4.0 bumpups thanks to the u.s.t.a.next time teddy sign your name. ward p. jannuzzi
ReplyDeleteShouldn't you be on the court Ward?
ReplyDeleteInteresting 4.0 DQ of cunningham. I am curious to see any others in our state. I was not shocked by the one on our team in Dallas since my guy was playing up and happened to hit some solid players and play well. I do think the bumpups are going to skew some strikes to players which is why having a self rated player this year is tricky. I signed up only one and he is gone.
ReplyDeleteWho is porkchop?
ReplyDelete4.5 Results tonight
ReplyDeleteDeucebags beat Shwwing
Lakeside beats GTAC
Westside BS beat Hurricanes
Westheimer Indoors beat Copperfield
Scores???
ReplyDeletehad a feelin that westheimer would win. that's a 3 way rat race in flight 3
ReplyDeleteThrowing out two other names that should be in the protest chatter: Lester Callaway and Blake Martin. These guys took a line each from the Mighty Deucebags. Should definitely be looked into.
ReplyDeleteWOW! The wives and girlfriends of the Deucers look pretty HOT!!! And the Lindloffs are a pretty close second as well...MUY CALIENTE!!!
ReplyDeleteWOW.... all you lakeside lovers check it... 4.0 team lost last night to Glenlake something... lakesides team is so large it could fire all last nights players and still have more players than any other team.... hope this result is not from mike and phil trying to play all the players twice on the huge roster
ReplyDeletedeucebags win another close one, will tran stop playing his buddies or will he try to win the league?
ReplyDeletewow, the schwings almost pulled it off. a third set tie-breaker determined the winner.
ReplyDeleteWhy didn't Copperfield bring out their A-team? McMullin and Ricardo? I heard 4 out of 5 matches went to a 3rd set even without 2 of their top players. Can anyone confirm?
ReplyDeleteto 9:08, the Schwings were down 3-0 before the last two matches were even finished with their first sets. the Deucebags win had already been secured.
ReplyDeleteAll scores posted yet? Any surprising results for teams or individuals??
ReplyDeleteRolido Girlz continued their downward spiral.
ReplyDeleteHess losing to Moser is surprising
ReplyDeleteWhat was so puzzling about Metoyer and Champlin winning?!
ReplyDelete
