2010 Houston City Masters event POSTPONED

Due to several scheduling conflicts the Masters event has been postponed until between the City Playoffs and Sectionals. As soon as the date is confirmed, I will release more information.

  1. As crappy as the 4.0 ratings look, I would bet on some 3.5 bumpups to be some of the top teams.

    ReplyDelete
  2. we should do a poll of the top teams.

    ReplyDelete
  3. are players that were DQ'd eligible? Example: Bruce Inting and Scott Foster?

    ReplyDelete
  4. Foster was not DQ'd. I think only people with YE 2009 4.0 ratings can play 4.0.

    ReplyDelete
  5. Bruce and Scott are now 4.5 players (as of the 12.31.09 ratings) so they would be eligible at the 4.5 level.
No self rated players will be invited.

    ReplyDelete
  6. Too bad we can't get a Green/Morton vs. Ballesteros/Huffman match.

    ReplyDelete
  7. Green/Morton are playing WTT this weekend. Someone add Ballesteros/Huffman.

    ReplyDelete
  8. Why do it on EOY 2009 ratings?

Why not do it on last year's ratings?

    ReplyDelete
  9. Chris - it wouldn't matter which year, you still don't make it.

Although, I agree with you. Masters should be based on past year not in anticipation of the coming year.

I challenge you to a match. Let's see who is better at tanking to get back down to 4.0.

    ReplyDelete
  10. @1252p - Shoot me an email and we can go play.

I am on vaca this week and in Dallas next week for work but should be open after that.

    ReplyDelete
  11. It does seem a little odd. There is really no way to know top 3.5 or 4.0 doubles teams based on YE ratings. Might want to re-think this one Lance.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Since all the 4.0's got bumped up do we still have a group to make Top 8?

    Top 4.5's

    Odion
    Matt S.
    John B.
    John Day
    Ballesteros
    Huffman
    Lombardi
    Morgan
    Alain Tran
    Hung P. Nguyen
    Ward J.
    T. Dugas
    D. Dugas
    Rothe
    Judson
    Bradley
    Lacy
    Robins
    Letan
    Morton
    Goldberg

  13. You're forgetting Red

    ReplyDelete
  14. So basically, you're saying the remaining top 4.5s are from the Hurricanes & Deucebags, with 2 players each from Westside, Swhings and Copperfield.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Here's a thought - how about we ask everyone on the list + 3 Hurricanes to play on the same team next year.

    ReplyDelete
  16. top 8 4.5 singles player for 2010 summer league

    odion
    sumrall
    q.bui
    s.phan
    moser
    trevino
    ford
    h.nguyen

-no singles players from schwings, carpenter is bumped up
-copperfield, only if bergmann is healthy
-no singles player from duecebags, bui and hasker got bumped
    - no singles from westside bs, bradley got bumped, however alzate can carry #2 singles

    ReplyDelete
  17. Yeah, I guess I'm leaving out Crush teams like phan/phan and Vu/Huynh. Who am I leaving out?? Sorry

    ReplyDelete
  18. You forgot Ward and Sarosh from the singles list.

    ReplyDelete
  19. did not include ward, bc he plays 50's singles, not league singles.
as for sarosh, he lost to morales and diep who are pretty good, but not top 4.5

    ReplyDelete
  20. Can you rank those singles guys in order? You forgot Don Rios on that list.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Is this anything more than a Red/Freeman love fest?

They are using this to slim the choices for next year.

Lance is helping put this together only to get snubbed as he won't get picked. The top guys will get pulled aside and talked to in prep for 2010.

    Don't kid yourself.

    ReplyDelete
  22. rios lost to najaros and alzate last year. why would he belong on any list?

    ReplyDelete
  23. Rios beat Moser and just recently won Lost Forest tournament. If you want to make that argument then what has Moser done in league tennis? He hasn't even been to the playoffs.

    ReplyDelete
  24. rios must be back on track. as for moser, he just beat carpenter a few weeks ago. also went 3rd set breaker with juan dekruyff, the same guy that whipped t.green, 6-0,6-0

    ReplyDelete
  25. I wonder why Alain Tran doesn't let Ward play in their singles line up?

    ReplyDelete
  26. Brian and Herb got second in the Masters they should be invited.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Rios has trouble winning while teamates are watching. He is a 500 hundred league player at best.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Masters event must have been pretty damn weak then.

    ReplyDelete
  29. brian and herb???? are you kidding me. don't worry hurricanes, no other team will try to steal them from you.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Holy crap. I just saw how well Goldberg and Herb did at Masters. Congrats guys, that's awesome! Herb must have been playing out of his mind to carry Goldberg that far!

    ReplyDelete
  31. Actually Goldberg carried Herb. 2nd place at Masters. Not bad at all.

    ReplyDelete
  32. The "Masters" included players like 4.0 Jimmy Fenn and the Dugas brothers. 'Nuf said.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Master's is dying by the wayside, much like Combo. No interest. The 4.5 women couldn't field more than 6 teams and singles.

    ReplyDelete
  34. reginald black got 2nd in 5.0, so that tells you alot about the masters.

    ReplyDelete
  35. the only two tourneys in houston that matters is the coke and fall fest. the other two is the lost forest winter. however, this is the league blog, so as far as i know, herb and goldberg are line #2 and #3 doubles

    ReplyDelete
  36. R. Black beat Reader to get the finals. I'd say that's an impressive win. Don't be mad you weren't invited Mr. 9:05.

Also, how is it that Fall Fest and Lost Forest winter are notable tournaments. Who played ?

    ReplyDelete
  37. black would have a losing record if he played 4.5 league matches. he will not even win a single 5.0 league match. that's the difference between the caliber of league vs tourney.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Any combination of Omon, Odion,Wanja or Green will be a force in 5.0 league.

    ReplyDelete
  39. 5.0 leagues is not won in doubles its who has the best singles player. All those names listed above aren't 5.0 league singles players.

    ReplyDelete
  40. omon is the only one on that list that can hang with the 5.0

    ReplyDelete
  41. Wanja has beaten Omon and lost only 1 match last year in league so, I think your wrong about that comment.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Omon, Odion,Wanja or Green of these four, green is the only one that can't hang

    ReplyDelete
  43. Green has lost twice to Omon in League. Both times in a close third set breaker. He also went three sets with Wanja with match points. He is underrated in singles.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Green lost 6-0,6-0 to Dekryuff in the finals of Sectionals.
From what I heard he also Choked at Nationals, and that's why Hurricanes didn't advance out of pool play. Green is way overrated !!

    ReplyDelete
  45. also got spanked by bradley, 6-4, 6-1

    ReplyDelete
  46. Is Bradley a top singles player? He was a lot of hype then he got crushed at City Playoffs.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Bradley is a top singles player, but did not do well because he's from wisconsin. the summer heat got to him, plus he had his bachelor party on the same weekend at the playoffs. hell, i lived in houston for over 20 years and i still can't handle the heat.

    ReplyDelete
  48. lance, when are you going to announce the team rosters for WTT. Would be nice if you posted on the blog.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Ted Bradley also crushed Don Rios in league.

    ReplyDelete
  50. You can't take any Tim Green results seriously, he is a notorious tanker.

    ReplyDelete
  51. If there is one thing Tim does NOT do it's tank. If he loses a match it's b/c his opponent or opponents beat him. He is a Dinker though.

    ReplyDelete
  52. I agree, Tim does not tank. That is why he is 5.0 again.

    ReplyDelete
  53. I was not involved but apparently the captains from Pac NW (finalist), Southern and MidWest all filed a grievance against Minka and her partner for their court behavior. The USTA suspended them both for 2010. Both players were bumped to 5.0 so I'm not sure that it makes a difference but hopefully they will behave with a little more class in the future.

    ReplyDelete
  54. Now that's funny. I wonder if she will argue that suspension. It was a sight to see Minka and her partner use every gamesmenship trick in the book to get the Victory. I like how she posts on her website that she is now the best amateur tennis player in the US. LOL.

    ReplyDelete
  55. Is it a known fact that anyone ever really tanks? My opinion - lots of speculation, assumptions, and false accusations. It's probably part of the new trend in the USTA ratings. The realization that anyone can have a bad day or play out of their minds. ie. redefining what defines a competitive match and recalculation of what it takes to get bumped up or down.

    ReplyDelete
  56. I have tanked many times and will probably do it again this year.

    ReplyDelete
  57. Goldberg and Morton had a great tournament and played good together. They are both good players. Rios is an underrated player so don't take him lightly.
    Quit the hatin'!!

    ReplyDelete
  58. goldberg and morton are pretty good, but need to work on improving their game during off season. rios just needs a little more time to back into the swing of things.

    ReplyDelete
  59. Will someone please teach Tim how to tank. Tanking means to go down, not up.

    ReplyDelete
  60. tim doesn't tank. it's just an excuse for losing

    ReplyDelete
  61. I don't make excuses for losing. I'm losing on purpose...

    ReplyDelete
  62. Any predictions on WTT? Rosters just out. Guess it's hard to tell without complete rosters but here's my guess:

    4.0 Supersmash
4.5 Hook 'em (like the name)

    ReplyDelete
  63. Rosters and Schedules have been released for WTT. Hopefully you will come out and watch an exciting event!

    ReplyDelete
  64. BTW
    Saturday schedule:
    3.0 8am; 12 pm; 4 pm
    4.0 10am; 2 pm; 6 pm

    Sunday schedule:
    3.5 8am; 12 pm; 4 pm
    4.5 10am; 2 pm; 5 pm

    ReplyDelete
  65. There will be 3 winners in the 4.0 draw and 2 winners in the 4.5 draw so gotta predict who will win each pool.

    ReplyDelete
  66. What did Minka do that was worth suspending her over ? I just recall Betsie saying she had no class, but no details...

    ReplyDelete
  67. It's hard to describe or explain. Besides the kissing and grabbing each other's butts. Her over-celebration after EVERY point they won was extreme and excessive. I don't know that I agree with suspension. If it was that bad, why didn't the umpire do something about it. Maybe there will be a directive next year for umpires to keep unsportsmanlike conduct at a minimum. It was really bad though. The worse I have ever seen - even in a men's match. Put it this way, there was probably around 20-30 players from other Sections watching the match in the finals, and they were all openly and vocally cheering against Minka's team.

    ReplyDelete
  68. i hate women being jealous of other women. minka looks and play better then you, so let it go. hey why won't we take a vote. who would you rather take on a date? minka or betsie

    ReplyDelete
  69. Hey, I wasn't the one who filed the grievance. The other captains asked me to but I declined. It's part of the game. I was just answering the post asking what it was she did that was so offensive. If you read my post closely you'll see that I said, I don't know that I agree with the suspension.

I guess what took it to the extreme level is she would yell and scream on everything, even unforced errors. The other teams would dump a return and she'd start yelling and screaming.

And as far as dating, you may as well be a snowball in hell cuz I'm not interested in any guys these days, not even Tiger Woods.

    ReplyDelete
  70. Awkward silence as we wonder if Betsie is coming out as a lesbian...???

    ReplyDelete
  71. Please leave the personal attacks of the blog. We all can say what we want about league tennis but, it really gets out of hand when you start making accusations that don't relate to tennis.

    ReplyDelete
  72. I've heard through the grapevine Betsie's been going through a very lengthy and acrimonious divorce (married 20 years). It's partially why she hasn't played much and didn't play any post-season matches.

    You should be embarrased...

    ReplyDelete
  73. It's ok. Guess I had that coming given my post... Just wish in what is now almost 2010 such inappropriate posts could be avoided.

2009 was a hard year for me but life certainly could be a lot worse. My experience has been that for every negative life-altering event, at least one thing good comes from it. I can't wait for tomorrow.

    ReplyDelete
  74. It was not a personal attack. I truly thought that is what she was saying and did not know about the divorce. Hang in there Betsie.

    ReplyDelete
  75. Don't sweat it. It's really ok. It's been going on so long I assumed everyone knew. If I ever did decide to switch sides I still wouldn't have a problem with it. And the Bloggers would be the first to know!

    ReplyDelete
  76. WTT was fun today. Lot's of talk about end of year rating bump ups. It's too bad all those 4.0's got bumped up.

    ReplyDelete
  77. Lots of talk this weekend at WTT about 4.0 bump ups. Looks like the draws will be bigger in 4.5 all around the state. Congrats to the 4.0 teams that won.

    ReplyDelete
  78. Sounded to me like a lot of the 4.5 bumps aren't going to play.

    ReplyDelete
  79. People keep saying that HTA leauge does not count in the ratings calculations (Greg even posted it at the beginning of the fall season). Are we sure that is the case? Has HTA confirmed that fall league does not count toward year end ratings??

    ReplyDelete
  80. 2009 HTA Fall League does not count towards 2009 YE Ratings. The way to know what does apply is do a search on the player name for 2009 and all of the match results that appear for that player and year are what counts. 2009 Fall results do not appear unless you go to 2010 results.

    ReplyDelete
  81. So HTA Spring league would count? I thought NONE of the HTA league results factored in to ratings. Lots of conflicting info. Has anyone heard directly form HTA or USTA TX on this matter?

    ReplyDelete
  82. HTA League is not a USTA sanctioned event and is not supposed to count towards ratings. It is not and never has been clear whether or not HTA results count towards ratings. There are some players out there who don't play USTA League or Tournaments (just HTA League) who somehow have computer ratings so they must factor in somehow.

    ReplyDelete
  83. I just spoke with the USTA Texas Section director and here are the facts.
The USTA rating is comprised of the SPRING HTA season, the summer USTA season and USTA sanctioned tournaments. The FALL HTA season has no bearing on USTA ratings at all.

    ReplyDelete
  84. I wonder what makes the Spring season so special over the Fall season.

Lance do you have the list of winners from the last WTT event?

    ReplyDelete
  85. Is everyone getting double hit on the USTA surveys from Stratagem Research Inc. or I am the lucky winner?

    How annoying is that shizzle?

I wonder if they really listen anywho.

    ReplyDelete
  86. They said they do. One of the questions on a survey in the past was if we wanted better t-shirts. This year at nationals they gave dri-fit shirts instead of cotton shirts. I guess that's a start.

    ReplyDelete
  87. Dri-Fit shirts but no water at the secondary courts. We had to get a family member to go buy a case of water for the team.

    ReplyDelete
  88. Anyone playing Tri Level event? When does the Spring league start?

    ReplyDelete
  89. Who are the top tri-level teams? What players?

    Top 4.5 guys already listed?
    Top 4.0 guys?
    Top 3.5 guys?

    What about the girls?

    ReplyDelete
  90. Why is there not consistency in how the Section does Tri-Level. I noticed that San Antonio has already played their tournament and they allowed 2009 mid-year ratings. It doesn't seem right if all the cities are not going by the same rating point,

    ReplyDelete
  91. Fort Worth had some folks sign up before the ratings and others still signing up after the ratings. They are using both systems.

Dallas and Houston are using YE 2009 ratings.

    ReplyDelete
  92. That's ridiculous. The TTA needs to make a set rule on what is used and all the cities do it that way. I know last year Houston used Mid-Year and other cities didn't.

    ReplyDelete
  93. It's especially unfair this year as the "stricter" formula was not used for mid-year so cities using mid-year definitely have an advantage.

    ReplyDelete
  94. Looks like Shock and Awe and Hurricanes are the only teams with players signed up. Tri Levels should get more exposure but, I guess everyone is still trying to ease into the New Year.

    ReplyDelete
  95. Should Houston do tri-level at a different time of year? I hate playing in the cold and wind.

    ReplyDelete
  96. It's dictatated by Sectionals and Nationals. Sectionals is Feb 19-21 and Nationals is March 19-21.

    ReplyDelete
  97. There will probably be multiple Houston teams advance to Tri-Level sectionals. This should encourage more teams to form. The women had a lot of teams last year. I think the new ratings really crippled this league.

    ReplyDelete
  98. Last year the women only had 1 team advance which is a shame because Betsie's team beat the winner and only lost by 2 games.

    ReplyDelete
  99. Just found out that tri level nationals is in Palm Springs during Pacific life Open. That would be fun. Too bad I'm only going to see the local event only. Competition is tough in Houston.

    ReplyDelete
  100. It's been there the last 3 years. Great event. Everyone who has gone has said it's the best event of the year (including USTA Adult League). You get a great FILA gift bag and free ticket to the Pac Life Open. Plus I believe you play at the same courts the pro tourney is being played and the pros are playing at the same time you are.

    ReplyDelete
  101. If anyone is interested here is a video my cousin edited from the footage I took from last year's tri-level.

    ReplyDelete
  102. Jason may be dethroned this year. Houston teams have a huge disadvantage against teams such as Ft Worth and San Antonio. Those teams were able to use MY Ratings that were not scaled in the same way YE Ratings were.

    ReplyDelete
  103. Looks like Austin also used MY Ratings

    ReplyDelete
  104. Nice to know we still have some clueless posters on here. Since San Antonio is already finished it would be good to take a look at their roster before you post. San Antonio doesn't even have a 4.5 on their roster competing at sectionals. And to the last poster about Austin using Mid year ratings, well let's see they didn't even have a Tri Level league.

    ReplyDelete
  105. Way to do your research.

    ReplyDelete
  106. Actually, if you count it as tennis the SA women's Tri-Level team is very stacked this year with more than half the team MY drops who were then bumped back up for YE. Same for the Austin team.

    ReplyDelete
  107. Don't forget, a lot of women actually follow the Blog!

    ReplyDelete
  108. My apologies to the women. I was responding to the attack on Jason being dethroned.

    ReplyDelete
  109. NP - Different Posters...

    ReplyDelete
  110. I think Houston will do just fine at Tri-Level and summer sectionals at all levels.

    ReplyDelete
  111. Houston has gotten the shaft as far as ratings go for the last two years for Tri-level. It hasn't stopped Houston from fielding quality teams though.

Houston men's has reached the final and gone to nationals in the last two years while the women have gone to Nationals and lost to the Dallas team that eventually advanced to Nationals.

Last year's women's local league was as close as it could get with Betsie's team being edged out by 2 games.

Betsie's team probably would have faired better at Sectionals than last year's Heat team with the 4.5 line being so strong and Emily Jacobs anchoring that 4.0 line. They probably would have had to win 2-1 the entire way but they had the talent to do it.

The Heat almost had a chance to repeat back to back trips to Nationals. I wonder if they are going to have a team this year again.

    ReplyDelete
  112. Mike,

Houston got the benefit of the ratings last year - YOU played as a 3.5 with a YE 2008 rating of 4.0 so be careful screaming bloody murder :)

    ReplyDelete
  113. Hmmm...you're right about last year. I was probably thinking about 2008 when we weren't allowed to use mid-year ratings and had to use EOY. That year Patton didn't get the early season bump and we had him penciled in for 4.0 and then at the end of the year he got bumped to 4.5. That really hurt our 4.0 line. Teams like Austin that year were able to use mid-year though. 2009 was fair though. Thanks for correcting me.

    ReplyDelete
  114. Bottom line it is clear that due to the timing of Tri-Level some teams will always get the short end of the stick where ratings are concerned and the Section needs to make it more consistent in fairness to all cities. I just looked at the women's San Antonio roster (as per someone else's post) and it is loaded. It will be hard for any Houston team to beat them this year. Evonne Allerkamp and Rachel Kensing playing 4.5 and Becki Pollock playing 4.0 and 3 of their 3.5s YE rated 4.0. That's a loaded team.

    ReplyDelete
  115. Actually the Heat didn't make it out of their flight in TL last year.

    ReplyDelete
  116. The playing field is even where the Tri-Level Men are concerned as the record has been set straight for Austin and San Antonio and we know Dallas is using YE ratings. But how about Ft Worth. That may be a little hurdle that Jason's team has at Sectionals since they used MYR. Other than that I don't imagine Jaons will have any problem winning Sectionals again this year.

The womens side is a different story. I agree, that San Antonio team will be hard to beat.

    ReplyDelete
  117. Heat didn't make it out of their flight in sectionals last year but they did lose to Dallas who eventually won the whole thing. They did however go to Nationals the year before last. I'm rooting for a Houston men's and women's trip to nationals this year since they've swapped years the last two.

    ReplyDelete
  118. when is tri level? any one need a solid 4.5?

    GZ

    ReplyDelete
  119. Hernan at Lost Forest may be looking for some players.

    ReplyDelete
