Quick questions.

Was John Kudrick playing possum in HTA league?

Who is Samuel Holmes and how did the Jedi Knights sweep the singles and still lose?

Can the Mob Squad survive without new doubles talent?

Are Burrmann/Day (28-5 in 4.5) or Armstrong/Hurlbert (8-0 in 4.5) king of the doubles hill?

Is it possible that the 4.5 Sectional finalist from last year, returning virtually everyone, is the second best team in its own division?

Are the Black Sheep for real? Who are Murray Fonseca, Stale Berge and Sean Lacy????

  1. Nice questions. I got no answers, I got a question though. How does the Met 4.5 team get away with so many out of town people? I thought there was a new rule.

  2. All I know is that the Black Sheep/Copperfield matchup next week will be very interesting. Copperfield has a very strong lineup (Kudrick and his partner shouldn't lose this year) and the Black Sheep have absolutely destroyed their first 2 opponents. Should be a great match.

  3. The answer to: "Are the Black Sheep for real? Who are Murray Fonseca, Stale Berge and Sean Lacy????"

The black sheep looked impressive. I met all three guys last night during my match against Murray and they are all class acts. Unfortunately, i was up both sets 5-4 and he's serving 0-30. only two points away from taking both sets, but he did a great job mentally, like always i didn't. very nice guy on and off the courts. looking forward to our next encounter and it's going to be another marathon.

  4. Kingwood will crush Met next week. Bring out the brooms - can you say 5-0 "sweep".

    Copperfield over Black Sheep 3-2.

Mob Squad beats Lost Forest 3-2 because they only take 4 players up there and default 2 doubles lines.

    Ssshhhwing over Sugar Creek 4-1.

    Rice over Ball Busters 4-1.

  5. The Black Sheep will surprise everyone this year. They looked very solid, but i think they have yet to display their full potential. Watch out DIV II

  6. Who do you think would win in a match between Burrmann/Day and Armstrong/Hurlbert?

  7. Do we know the schedule for city playoffs? Is it going to be the top 2 teams from each division, or the winner of each, and the 4th place finish?

  8. Probably the top 2 teams from each division. However, my understanding is all the final decisions are made based on court space for the weekend. While the 4.5 mens teams are up by 1 team this year (Lakeside + Met - Hangovers) I think the womens side might be up significantly, which may shrink the mens playoff spots.

  9. With 14 total teams in the 3.5s and 4.5s, 4 playoff spots are more than enough. That is almost 30% of the teams making the playoffs.

In the 4.0s there are 28 teams so 8 playoff spots is reasonable. Still 30%.

It would be nice to have more spots available but I'm not sure it would be reasonable to have 50%+ of the teams in Houston make the playoffs. What do the other big cities do?

  10. What is going on with Royal Oaks? Adding the Lakeside players should make them a powerhouse, but 0-2?

  11. If 4.5 only takes 4 teams to the city playoffs, then they should have only had 2 divisions. Its really an unfair advantage to have teams fight over a 4th spot, because there are some obvious rollover teams in all 3 divisions.

  12. I Don't trust the score from Red & Steve match. Burrman and Day are a very good doubles team but Mob protected 2 of their players by this loss. I am not saying that Burrman/Day cannot beat RE/Steve, but the score is suspicious. This is something a smart captain would do.

I posted something similar to this earlier today but Htown Hacker deleted it.

    WHY?

  13. Of course, having 4 playoff teams makes the regular season actually meaningful. And interesting and exciting. Next week's matchups will be pressure packed. And nothing will prepare teams for playoffs and Sectionals like a little pressure.

  14. Sorry to say, but the match between Burrmann/Day and Red/Steve was blowout city. They started over a half an hour late and finished at the same time as my match. I asked the score, and was told that it was two and one. Ask John or John the score or whether it was a tank job. It wasn't. No posts were deleted today.

  15. Red could use a few tank jobs to protect his rating again this year (got bumped to 5.0 but appealed and won), but i doubt tanking (not saying that is what happened) to Burrmann/Day would do it. He needs to tank to a team of newbies that have no record, or a record that is not quality.

  16. Then THAT would be too obvious...

  17. Yeah, that would be. But getting killed by Burrmann/Day is not going to doing anything to Red's rating. However, being that Red is a benchmark player, it might affect their rating.

  18. It never hurts to get a lopsided loss, and even better if it can potentially give your opponent a "red strike".

  19. Red & Steve are both benchmark and 5.0 bump downs, so anyone who beats them would be looked at closely I think. The same could be said for Armstrong and Hurlbert.

  20. Hurlbert is probably cruising on thin ice staying in 4.5. From what i understand, he has appealled a couple of times to keep his 4.5 rating.

  21. Anyone know the results of the 5.0 match between Old School & LF?

  22. To answer the question re: what other big cities do for playoffs- The short answer for 4.5 Dallas City Playoffs is that 4-5 teams make the actual city playoffs. Usually just 4 teams but if the Fall City Champ does not finish in the top spot in its division (there are 2 divisions of 4.5- A & B) then they are added as the 5th team. Essentially the City Playoff works like this- the winner of 4.5A and the winner of 4.5B automatically make city. The 2nd, 3rd, and 4th place teams in each division play the pre-qualifying tournament the week before the real City Playoffs. 3rd place plays 4th place with the winner playing the 2nd place team. The winner of each division in the pre-qualifying tournament joins the 1st place teams to make up the usually 4 team city tournament. Make sense. The Dallas league has 17 4.5 teams and 4 (most likely) will make the city playoffs.

  23. Tom Ristau and Scott Carr have built a nice team at westside. They showed a great team in 2007 and look to have created a deeper team for 08. Carr has 10 years in the league and appears to have figured it out with Ristaus help. Carr is out after a spinal operation but is still pulling some of the strings. Be ready, they are for real.
