Props to Tosha

Some of the obvious tankers received the ratings they deserved.

  1. Wanted to give the blogging world an update on my status for 2008. My appeal to be bumped back to 4.5 was declined since I am not within the .05 range for instant approval.

I find it odd that this is the year I get bumped up. My league record this year was 3-2 in singles with two of the wins over 4.0 players and 3-4 in doubles. Not stats that would scare anyone. I also had a 1-2 record at Sectionals each of the last two years. It seems odd that a Gary Armstrong who goes undefeated at Sectionals wins an appeal to go back to 4.5 and I lose the appeal.

On another note, I have always played to win and will do the same if I stay as a 5.0 player.

  2. The irony is that Green's old ringer Chance Morgan, who is easily 5.5 got moved to 4.5. I am sure nobody on this board feels sorry for Green as he is just as bad as Torres and Cambon with cheating, but thats got to hurt for him seeing his ringer rated lower than him. But honestly who here really thinks Green wont find a way to get moved back down to 4.5. Also if he stays at 5.0, i am willing to bet money he tanks every match 6-0 6-0.

  3. I believe Green should be moved to 5.0 just based on his cheating in league, but he does have a point with Armstrong. No way that guy should be rated 4.5.

  4. I will take that bet from Anonymous that says I will tank. I will not tank a match.

I will send a post card to anonymous from 5.0 sectionals.

I still do not understand this cheating talk. Going in to this year only two players have been bumped up from my past teams. Andrew Bourne and Chance Morgan. I have always tried to use rated players with the the few self rates from time to time. Most of my team has remained the same. This year we had three bump ups. Phong (back at 4.5), Henry, Grant and myself. If these names scare you at 4.5 then you probably need to improve your game.

I would like to give congrats to the following for the 2008 4.5 All-Star Team:
    Blessing Bvunzawabaya
    David Bvunzawabaya
    John Kudrick
    Marlon Mazique
    Omon Dibua
    Gary Armstrong
    Red Benzon
    David McMullan
    Craig Bobo

Any opinions for the tenth spot on my All-Star team?

  5. The tenth spot goes to Woody Roger a 5.5 2002 National Player, who will be playing 4.5 this year.

  6. Mazique and Benzon are overrated. Benzon especially how the hell is he considered a 4.5 all star? Also thanks dinker for telling all us 4.5's if we can't beat world ranked juniors like Murphy or former D2 college players like yourself we don't belong in 4.5. I'm still waiting for the official Tim Green NTRP guidelines to come out. Should be great comedy.

  7. Tim Hurlbert has won his appeal and I think he is definitely an ALL STAR PLAYER.
I will Predict that according to Year End Ratings that
AUSTIN,DALLAS,HOUSTON and SAN ANTONIO will all have powerhouse teams.

  8. Can Someone Please explain how Timothy Hurlbert wins an Apppeal after going 4-0 in Local League(Had a Good Win Over Craig Bobo) then 3-0 in Playoffs then 5-0 at Sectionals including Beating the Austin Team that made it to Nationals. This Really puzzles me.

    Blogger Please Help me understand.

  9. I'm as surprised by some of these ratings as anyone else. The nature of doublees (with its rarer service breaks and generally closer scores) makes it less likely that people who play only doubles will get ratings significantly higher than the cutoff point. A lot of doubles players end up "within tolerance" and end up winning their appeals.

  10. Grant Murphy was never a world ranked junior. That is an incorrect fact caused by the KAC website where he works.

  11. John Burman and John Day from Sugar Creek should definately be on the allstar team ... they have been undefeated in the City playoffs for the last 2 years and rarely ever lose a match.

  12. Paul Simon will be an excellent pick up for a 4.5 team. I understand he played in the pro circuit.

  13. He and Garfunkel make a good doubles team.

  14. Who would make up an allstar 4.0 team after the new ratings?

  15. Just appealed Grant Murphy and he is back at 4.5 .

  16. Is Henry back at 4.5? Are the Hangovers going to be back in action but without Tim?

  17. Blessing B. getting rated 4.5 has to be a mistake. He beat 5.5 level Devillier in straights at the Copperfield Open, and beat John Day 6-0 6-2 at the same tournament. He was also a top ranked junior colelge player not long ago. He is a strong 5.5.

  20. Vote for Robert Kane for the 4.0 All-Star team!

  21. The 4.5 All-Star team lists three Copperfield players so they should be able to field their own team next summer. If the ratings hold, after all these years CRC finally has a chance to compete against the rest of the ringers out there. MAS

  22. Somebody start something, I'm bored and can't play right now. Or is everyone reading about Reader on the Tourney blog?

  23. When does the Spring season start in Houston. I look forward seeing what 4.0 and 4.5 teams start to form down there. Our Spring sign ups have already started and some interesting combinations have already started. Our initial roster deadline is March 5th so you will be able to see at least 8 on each team by then.

Also wondering if there is any good players left at 3.5, our area was wiped out but there should be a couple of good teams that could contend at Sectionals.

  24. The Kingwood Crush have added ringer Danny Hanley to their HTA doubles team. Look for him to dominate in summer league for them. Hes just as good as Hurlbert.

  25. Bazan,

There are a couple of 3.5s left in Houston but I'm not sure if they will consolidate into 1 team. NOHO has some really good 3.5s as well (who probably will consolidate). Watch for Columbia Lakes (play out of LLTC) to have a decent team and more than likely represent Houston at Sectionals.

Just my guess at this point.
