Sorry y'all. I have limited computer access this week and next. I was glad to see that no controversy had erupted while I was away. Hahaha
There were just a few matches of any importance whose scores have been reported. In 4.0's largest division, the two main contenders for the second (behind Lakeside) playoff spot went at it in a makeup match as Lost Forest Hackers slipped past the Copperfield Copperheads 3-2. Copperfield's strategy of putting Jack Maxwell in singles and Sam Ahn in doubles backfired, as they lost both lines. Lost Forest has just one loss but still has to play Lakeside. They are ahead of the Copperheads by two lines won, with Bear Creek still in the picture.
Not much of interest in 4.5 yesterday. Rich Ryu gave Omon Dibua a battle but the rest of the Yutts went down meekly in a 5-0 loss to Kingwood. Tor Krosby was did not playfor the Yutts. West Side's No Way Out had almost no chance to beat Ssshhhwing as they had to default two lines. Michael Chec made his first singles appearance for Ssshhhwing, easily handling captain Richards.
Rice's 5.0 team did not handle the absence of Arun Nanjappa very well, getting shut out by Lost Forest. Amit Garg tried the singles role and dropped a tough three setter to Dustin Phillips. I haven't heard the results of the Met-Teague matchup, but it's fairly safe to assume that the Met is in the driver's seat for a trip to Sectionals. Hernan and Lost Forest could still make things interesting, but that's a story for another day...

Garg cramped a bit against Philips and the rest definitely fought it out though the scores have the wrong names entered. I really don't think we would be totally damned without Arun as I'm sure everyone thinks, but I don't mind. It's nice incentive to improve.
ReplyDeletePhilips is good, and it'd be interesting to see who'd come out on top against Magid or Nanjappa. Those would be good matches.
Honest match overall with no drama. A few points here and there and the matches could have gone either way. It's just too bad it went the other way for us three times.
We'd have taken them in straight sets had we moved the matches indoor @ Lost Forest to the new ping pong table like I suggested. DY
so who wins when the "5.5" nanjappa plays the "4.5" magid?
ReplyDeleteYeah the new ping pong table at Lost Forest is cool.
ReplyDeleteNanjappa beat Magid last season in league.
Back up - what do you mean the wrong names are entered in the scores. For which team and which players? You need to get that changed. The scores that are entered are all very close and could potentially keep someone (the winner) from getting bumped up for 2008 if it's not the correct opponent. In other words, an easier opponent or someone who has a lower 5.0 or possibly a 4.5 player - as opposed to a high 5.0/borderline 5.5 player.
ReplyDeleteOk Cheryl's been contacted about the match. It was actually Fukunaga that played with Cuesta and Li that played with Kudva...
ReplyDeleteYou know, Magid was actually sort of complacent in that match (obviously since nobody's really come close to beating him all these years in league). So he was surprised in that first set 1-6. Then he pulled his groin. Then he lost the second set 5-7. I think it would be much closer the next time they played. DY
Maybe I'm giving him to much credit, but I think the blogger is being clever. I think he's saying that Lost forest could protest John Guererro from Reds team and turn a lose into a win. Guererro played Division one tennis and is self rated so he should be 5.5. How else do you think Red won those matches against 5.0 people. He played with Guererro.
ReplyDeleteJohn Guererro is solid but don't think he is a 5.5 player. I have seen him play and know that he and Red have lost to the likes of Teague and DeLuca several times.
ReplyDeleteIt doesn't matter where someone "Should" play. If he's self rated, played D1 College tennis, and is under 30 - he needs to self-rate at 5.5. Depending on where he played in college he might even have to play as a 6.0. That's the way the system works. He should play in the 5.5 league at a minimum and let the computer bump him down if he's not competitive there.
ReplyDeleteYeah Guerrero is a slad dunk DQ for anyone wanting to protest him.
ReplyDeleteAlthough the same thing could be said for Daniel Bello of lost forest, self rated as a 5.0 but currently on the UT-arlington team. He isnt in the same league as guerrero though who played for both University of new orleans and lamar and had very good results.
ReplyDeleteWell Teague provided no love for Rice as they put out one of their typical mind boggling lineups including the obligatory default. Its down now most likely to lost forest and Met. Lost forest will pick up a win from their likely protest of guerrero and will be right back in the action.
ReplyDeleteRice though still is in the hunt provided they can beat the MET team in the makeup match. Its going to be a logjam atop the standings when everything plays out.
ReplyDeleteIt's doubtful that any win will be picked up from a DQ of Guerrero since the league is only suspending further play (as is the case with Arun) so I wouldn't bet on it. That said it should be noted that Teague himself has been managing the team himself these last few weeks and although has struggled to field a full team is doing it with his core team and not any of the "hired guns" as they have so often been referred to. Give the guy credit for at least trying to finish this thing out with some dignity vs. just defaulting all lines!
ReplyDeleteGuerrero is a much more cut and dried case than Arun was. Guerrero just finished up a 4 year stint in D1 with some good results against top teams. But it is true that he might only be suspended. We will just have to wait on see on that outcome but my guess is that his matches will be forfeited.
ReplyDeleteIf Guerrero is DQd for self-rating he will lose all his wins. Same for Bello.
ReplyDeleteRemember, Arun was given a medical waiver. That is why he didn't lose his wins.
Agreed!
ReplyDeleteAnyone playing out of level based on self-rating inaccuracies will lose all their matches won during the season....however, better protest in a hurry because there is a 48-hour rule that applies to "local" league play. Better look at the NATIONAL protest procedures on this one or at least get it in quickly.
Can you elaborate on that 48 hour rule? Does that mean that a captain may not protest an illegal player if he/she doesn't discover his illegality until later in the season?
ReplyDeleteActually, a captain can file a complaint against a player based on self-rate violations at any time. If that player is in violation they will lose all of their matches.
ReplyDelete2.02C(3) A complaint regarding failure to meet eligibility requirements (e.g. under age, not a USTA member, misrepresentation of identity) may be filed by a team captain or league coordinator at any time. For eligibility complaints, a USTA League coordinator may declare a player ineligible and disqualify that player without filing a grievance prior to the disqualification.
As long as the league has not concluded and within 24 hrs from the end of the season. After 24 hrs, the player does not lose their matches, but they will not advance with the team.
ReplyDeleteFor the sorry soles that didn't make it to city playoffs, you can always try your luck in a major zone tourney in San Antonio that same weekend:

Has anyone actually worked out the whole deal yet as far as the Rice/Met/Lost Forest matches won thing goes? Does Lost Forest need to beat Met to win and vice versa? Does Rice need to beat Met to win? It's confusing but I'm sure someone's looked at it...
ReplyDeleteWith the Protests that have been turned in By Lost Forest about Guererro they could still be in the running, but looks like the Met Team will be at Sectionals most likely. Don't think Rice has anyone who can beat John Sullivan and the Duo of Weingeist,Putterman and Hiddelston have loads of experience behind them. Anyone of these players could compete at the 5.5 level.
ReplyDeleteI think you give Hiddleston, Weingeist & Putterman too much credit. They didn't seam to impress much against Teague's team last week (Hiddleston notwithstanding since he didn't play but Sullivan did). They are a good 5.0 team.
ReplyDeleteYeah according to the scores at least, it seems like some of the 4.5 guys are doing reasonably well against those three, as in they're not getting blown out of the water. But speaking of playing 5.5, Benzon is playing that too?!? That guy is trying to get to sectionals on like thirty different levels. Who's he going to play with at 5.5? Maybe Newport...
ReplyDeleteNewport won't be good enough to win with Benzon. Phillipousis seems to be for sale these days look for him to sign up and get a nice bonus.
ReplyDeleteHe could be the new poster boy for that team. They might rake in millions in illegal endorsements! But I'm sure it'll all go to charity though.
ReplyDeleteWeingeist, Putterman, and Hiddleston seem more like a trio than a duo :-)
ReplyDeleteRed still lives with his parents
ReplyDeleteDoes anyone have any Early Predictions on to who will win the 4.0 and 4.5 playoffs? I'm sure many people would think Kingwood and the Hangovers are 1 and 2 in the 4.5's but could one of the other teams pull out an upset?
ReplyDeleteWhat about in the 4.0's ? i know that Freemans Hurricane team is stacked but can anyone stop them?
Who determines who will get the Wildcard in Sectionals?I know in the past Houston has got the Wildcards,1 in 4.0's last year and 1 in 4.5 last year. Does anyone try and get a better Bracket going into sectionals?
Schwwing Baby all the way !! Maybe even Star Wars Oops I Mean Jedi Knights... Hmmm
ReplyDeleteHurricanes are going to Nationals Baby !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteWildcards are literally drawn from a hat. Each city gets a ticket for every 4 teams they have. So, of course Houston and Dallas have an advantage. With the expanded draw, Houston and Dallas actually get 2 teams in the Men's 3.5, 4.0, and 4.5 I believe but not 100% sure on that.
ReplyDeleteIs there already a way to see which teams will be in what Bracket in Sectionals? When does that get posted ?
ReplyDeleteWho cares, it's all fixed.
ReplyDeleteHey Guys... I appreciate your thoughts & prayers for my wife. She survived a scare, and is at home now. She had more tests and CT Scans taken in med center yesterday and has to see another specialist in a few days; -so we are hoping and praying for good news. Keep us in your prayers. Thanks. Craig
ReplyDeleteIt is my understanding that there are 16 sections that automatically get participants into Sectionals (if they meet the local league requirements) and then the top 3 cities with the most players (not teams) get an additional automatic team and then the others (to make it 20 teams) are literally pulled out of a hat lottery-style, for every 4 teams in your local league to get 1 chance. There is also a qualifying tournament held in Abiline (I believe) for another spot.
ReplyDeleteI believe the drawing will be on Monday, July 2nd and the pools should come out shortly after.
Hopefully they won't release the sectionals bracket early this year. Last year they had a problem when one of the women's team in Austin purposely lost a match so they could get the wildcard draw instead of the 1st place draw, which was pretty lame. On a related note, it really sucks when you're a first place team is paired with one of the other big cities right off the bat while the WC team gets an easier draw, but I don't think there is any way to seed the teams. -AT
ReplyDeleteCraig, that's great news!
