There are some great people in our league and we need to get to know and support one another as well as compete against each other. Regardless of the outcome of matches; captains need to encourage their players to the highest level of sportmanship, respect, and attitude on the courts; here in Houston and subsequently throughout the state.

I believe that anyone watching the final match between Houston and Austin in the 4.5 final would agree that it was a lot closer than the score shows. The singles could have easily split, and I recently found out that one of the Houston players (that lost their doubles match) was injured during the match and continued playing injured; he subsequently has undergone surgery. This could have made the match even closer (not to say the outcome would have changed) but that was news to me and did shed some light on the lopsided score for their match.

Additionally the behavior of the Austin team during the latter part of the match was uncalled for. This is exactly what the HTA teams do not want to be. Our captains have to maintain their heads and I am glad that the incident did not escalate beyond the court. The scary part is that it almost did and that would have been a very dark moment for our league. I don't want to see our captains on the courts after matches unless they are with other captains shaking hands and congratulating players. I don't want to see our players involved in anything but competitive tennis. This is not what we are here for, and there is nothing wrong with loosing a match competitively; but fighting it out during or after a match will not do anything but bring us collectively down.

The bigger problem is that if this continues (and it is an issue that is being looked at) then we are setting the conditions for the USTA to increase the monitoring of our matches and players (which they cannot afford to fund) which essentially puts us in a position of having to work with more volunteer league officials and I don't think any of us want any part of that. Not to say that everything needs to be sugar coated; but I belive the attitude and tone of our actions, attitudes, and comments (on the court/blogs/ect) are becoming mindsets and topics reflective of the HTA teams in our league. I would call on the captains to take the lead and let's take our 4.5 HTA teams to a new level on and off the court this upcoming season.

The HTA is a great tennis community and as individuals we can call on ourselves to make it better. Overall we need to be very proud of our representation and again my congratulations to both Houston 4.5 teams in representing the HTA so well this year.

Just my thoughts and my best to all our tennis community. Looking forward to 2008.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6625710123724017027.post-50895328169523724392007-08-29T16:47:00.000-05:002007-08-29T16:47:00.000-05:00Chad,I called but Napolean's midget son answered a...Chad,

I called but Napolean's midget son answered and said you were practicing with the women's 3.5 team in preparation for Nationals. I say we are all 5.0 players. Also, Chunckler and Odi were hands down the best tennis player at this tournament, and also the nicest. I wish the best to them and everybody else. However, the person who wrote that Chad Case was a "prick" and needs to get his ass kicked, please call 512.709.9876, maybe we can talk, meet, and/or do lunch sometime if you are ever in the ATX. Noone on my team dominated and I promise none of them were trying to protect their rating either. I think it was more a case of playing down to the level of your opponent. We've all been there when we play lower level players - your game naturally lowers to the level of your opponent. But, I also think we were fortunate in that none of my edge players ever had to play against another edge player.

I think after Nationals we could lose 1-2 players. They will elevate their game to where it needs to be to win their lines.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6625710123724017027.post-63314989925539764672007-08-24T21:52:00.000-05:002007-08-24T21:52:00.000-05:00Betsie, how many of your women do you think will g...Betsie, how many of your women do you think will get bumped after this year?Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6625710123724017027.post-82304608945954439282007-08-24T21:44:00.000-05:002007-08-24T21:44:00.000-05:00I don't see a 4-peat happening in 2008. The 2006 ...I don't see a 4-peat happening in 2008. The 2006 team was lucky to get to Nationals in that they relied completely on 3 players who were all bumped to 5.0 (Maria Taylor, Carol St Clair, So Youn Youn). I don't think the rest of the team is strong enough and there are not enough other strong day-leaguers out there to make that team a contender. None of those players (except for maybe Maria - but she won't benefit from forfeits like she did in 06 and can't play day league) should get bumped back to 4.5 either.

I predict that Dallas will take it next year. Austin had 3 mid-year 5.0's and they dominated at Sectionals. Unfortunately for them our only losses vs Austin were to their 5.0 players at line 1 singles and 1 doubles, and they did not match up against our best players.

2009 could definitely bring another crown.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6625710123724017027.post-66799931550899165942007-08-24T21:11:00.000-05:002007-08-24T21:11:00.000-05:00What about all the Houston Dominance in Womens 4.5...What about all the Houston Dominance in Womens 4.5? 3 yrs in a row Houston womens 4.5 have made it to Nationals. Because of the automatic berth to the City Championships in the Spring it makes us start planning for next year almost immediately. We have to keep 70% of the same roster to get that automatic berth.
